California has officially banned child marriage, with Governor Gavin Newsom signing legislation to end the practice that is still legal in 32 US states.
The new law, which will come into effect on 1 January, states people must be 18 to get married in the Golden State.
Newsom called it a "long overdue measure to protect young Californians and minors". He signed the bill into law with Courtney Stodden, whose parents allowed her to marry a 50-year-old Hollywood actor when she was just 16.
Stodden, who has been advocating to end the practice, called the change a "victory" and said survivors of child marriage should "never have been expected to carry this burden".

Lauryn Hill defended her former partner Rohan Marley on Instagram after a social media influencer dubbed the businessman a "tyrant."
Last week, influencer Mayowa posted an Instagram reel breaking down the past relationship between the eight-time Grammy winner and Marley, with whom she shares five children. The exes dated from the mid-90s until roughly 2009. In Mayowa's reel, she referenced Marley marrying his second wife, Barbara Fialho. Marley, who's the son of late reggae icon Bob Marley, was previously married to Geraldine Khawly and divorced Fialho in 2020 after one year of marriage.
"I've always felt like Lauryn Hill's music felt so incredibly sad," Mayowa said, adding that it seemed like the vocalist was "trying to make up for something."
"Her music sometimes seemed self-flagellating, like she was trying to hurt herself to be deserving of love," she continued, adding that Marley "destroyed" Hill.

The 33-year-old singer sparked fresh marriage speculation during the final concert of her Eternal Sunshine Tour at London's O2 Arena on September 1, 2026, after making a surprise change to the lyrics of her 2018 hit "Thank U, Next."
Grande has been rewriting the famous line about Alvarez throughout the tour, but her final version was easily the most suggestive yet. Instead of the original lyric about looking back and laughing at the songs she wrote about her former boyfriend, Grande sang, "I'm tryna make him my last."
