The Rams were among the favorites for Super Bowl LXIII before they traded for Myles Garrett in June and acquiring the defensive player of the year has only pushed expectations for the coming season higher in Los Angeles.
Head coach Sean McVay acknowledged those expectations at the start of training camp while noting that "there's a lot of stuff in the midst of the journey that we don't control." McVay wants the Rams to prioritize the things they do control when it comes to preparing for the season and quarterback Matthew Stafford was in a similar frame of mind when he spoke to reporters on Monday.
Stafford said he wants the team to focus on improving their baseline level of play rather than thinking about how high they can climb if everything falls into place.
"We can't help but make each other better, [but] pieces of paper and names on a roster, those don't win football games," Stafford said, via Greg Beacham of the ******* ociated Press. "Teams and players and groups do. . . . Sean said it the other night, we've got potentially a high ceiling, right? We've got great players that have done a lot in this league. What can we do to continue to raise our floor, so if I'm off a little bit, we can still go find a way to win a football game? If our defense is off a little bit, we can still find a way to go win a football game. Continuing to raise that floor is something that's going to be a huge part of our journey this season."
There are a number of ways that a talented team can get thrown off track over the course of an NFL season. The work that Stafford and the Rams do now can't eliminate all of them, but anything they can do to pare that number down will help them weather the inevitable curveballs that come their way over the next few months.

Several local sports celebrities will play alongside PGA Tour golfers at Detroit Golf Club during Wednesday's annual pro-am tournament, which is open to the public and free for fans.
Among the celebs scheduled to play are Lions legends Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson, new Michigan head football coach Kyle Whittingham, former Michigan State basketball greats-turned-broadcasters Greg Kelser and Steve Smith, current Red Wing Alex DeBrincat, former Lion Joique Bell and Oakland head men's basketball coach Greg Kampe.
There might be more celebs participating, but those are the ones Rocket officials have publicized. Notably, Red Wings captain (for now) Dylan Larkin's name isn't on the list. Jersey's Filip Nowacki qualified second-fastest in the 200m ******* troke as he aims for a second medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The 18-year-old world junior champion, who won 100m ******* troke silver on Saturday, came into the event as the top-ranked swimmer in the Commonwealth.
He won his heat in a time of 2:10.46, 0.27 ahead of England's Gregory Butler who he overtook after 50m of their race.
Canada's Oliver Dawson qualified fastest in 2.10.05 with Australia's Zac Stubblety-Cook, who has won gold and silver at the last two Olympic Games, in fourth place.

Blackstone does not expect growing competition to drive down returns on its new investments in AI infrastructure, at least not anytime soon, said COO Jon Gray.
Speaking during the firm's Q2 earnings call, Gray said demand for data centers, chips and the power to supply them is so great that the risk of oversupply and a subsequent collapse in valuations is minimal.
"It's very hard to get the chips today, it's very hard to get the power, it's very hard to get the entitlements [to build data centers]," he added. "That means the supply is not matching [demand]."
Data centers are sufficiently large and complicated to build that you don't see what Gray described as a "Miami condo effect," where developers speculatively build capacity in the hope of finding a buyer.

According to a report from The Spokesman Review's Greg Woods, the Washington Huskies and Washington State Cougars will not play their annual Apple Cup rivalry on the hardwood.
It's the first time since 1917 that the two teams won't meet in the regular season after the Huskies moved from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten following the end of the 2023-24 season; instead, the in-state rivals will play an exhibition game in Seattle at some point this fall.
The Huskies currently lead the series 189-111, and have won the last three matchups against the Cougars, most recently an 81-69 victory in Pullman.
In that contest, the Huskies were led by freshman forward Hannes Steinbach, who posted 14 points and 13 rebounds as part of a stellar season that saw him selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the No. 14 overall pick in June's NBA draft, while sophomore guard Wesley Yates added 26 points and 7 rebounds in the win.

Major recruiting news broke on Thursday afternoon as Texas announced that Five-Star Plus+ cornerback commit John Meredith, the No. 2 overall prospect in the 2027 cycle, had reclassified into the 2026 cycle and will join the Longhorns this fall.
With Meredith departing the class of 2027, that led to a slight shift in the Rivals Industry Ranking. Long Beach Poly (Calif.) five-star Donte Wright is now the nation's No. 1 CB in the cycle.
The Miami commit has continued to see his stock rise ahead of a big senior campaign this fall. Last week, he was named the No. 4 overall prospect and top-ranked CB in the new Rivals300. He's now the No. 9 recruit in the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all major recruiting media companies.

Paul Felder isn't confident Conor McGregor comes back better after UFC 329.
McGregor (22-7 MMA, 10-5 UFC) tore his right ACL and meniscus in the first kick he threw against Max Holloway two weeks ago at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was waved off after just 69 seconds as McGregor was unable to continue.
McGregor attempted to come back after breaking his left leg in July 2021. He was first scheduled to face Michael Chandler at UFC 303, but a broken pinky toe forced him out. Despite the slew of injuries and unfortunate events, McGregor insists on fighting again. He thinks with "today's regenerative medicine advancements and improved training methods," he can return as soon as summer of 2027.
"I do agree that with the advancements in medicine and things that you can do to support ligaments, and your knee, you can be back quick, but you're also way older than you were the first time you went through this surgery," Felder said on the "Believe You Me" podcast. "You didn't have a broken shin that you had already recovered from in the other leg.
"So I think yeah, he'll be back relatively quick, but I just don't know what your legs are going to be like after yet another big setback. I know he's trying to keep mentally strong. He keeps posting that he's not putting any substances in his body and I'm glad to hear that – good for him. But I just don't know if that's enough to get you back within a year, ready to go when you've had five years to get ready for this one, and your body still didn't seem to hold up to it."

Recently, Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano went on the Y-Option podcast, a podcast all about college football hosted by Yogi Roth, to talk about the state of the program, Schiano's optimism going forward, and how much the program has benefited from a change in leadership in the athletic department.
The podcast started with a conversational feel, with Roth asking Schiano about his personal life, his path to coaching, and how he sees his role as not just coaching the team but also helping prepare young men for life. One interesting thing they talked about during this segment was how Schiano addressed new defensive coordinator Travis Johansen's concerns about being there for his family, so he would feel comfortable making the move to Rutgers.
Schiano was also allowed to speak about the positive changes that have occurred because of the hiring of Keli Zinn and the new alignment at the university.
"We have never had vertical alignment from the president down through the athletic director to the football coach. For the first time we do, and that certainly means a lot when it comes to fundraising and NIL and all of that. But it is so much more than that. It's an attitude of excellence. It's winning is important, and the commitment to win," said Schiano. "I think Keli Zinn is going to do a great job here, and I think that President Tate understands what it takes to compete in this league."

The MLB trade deadline is less than two weeks away. As teams look to fortify their rosters for the stretch run, fantasy managers can help their squads by scouring the waiver wire for reinforcements. Let’s highlight five players to consider adding who are still available in the majority of Yahoo leagues.
Torres has been limited to 46 games this season because of injury. He recently missed over a month with an oblique ailment. Across three games since making his return, he is 3-for-11 with two walks and a run scored. He continues to show a good eye at the plate, recording a 15.3% walk rate and a 19.2% strikeout rate for the season. That has enabled him to record a .351 wOBA. The Tigers will play six games next, including three at the Athletics’ hitter-friendly park. Don’t hesitate to add Torres if you need help at second base.
Sasaki is coming off a good start against the Yankees in which he gave up one unearned run over 5 2/3 innings. Brown, the Volcano Vista High School boys basketball coach, attracted a standing-room only crowd of coaches as a featured speaker as the annual summer conference for the New Mexico High School Coaches ******* ociation, the New Mexico Officials ******* ociation, the New Mexico Activities ******* ociation and the New Mexico Athletic Directors ******* ociation got underway at the Crowne Plaza hotel near the Big-I.
As always, a large number of the state's head coaches, in every sport, have convened for the multi-day conference.
Brown, who has led the Hawks to five straight Class 5A state ******* les and six overall, offered an hour-long, detailed glimpse into the particulars of how Volcano Vista's program functions throughout a calendar year. Among the big crowd jammed into this room Thursday was even retired Cliff Hall of Fame coach Pete Shock.

VICE Studios on Thursday announced a new seven-episode season of the show with a premiere set for Sept. 1 at 9 p.m. ET on VICE TV. The season premiere episode features UFC Hall of Famer Don Frye, "whose willingness to absorb brutality in the cage led to the fight of his life against pain and addiction."
Of particular interest to many, most likely, later in the season will be an episode featuring longtime fighter Phil Baroni, who remains in prison in Mexico on a charge of murder. A teaser video for the season shows a clip of a phone interview with Baroni and him saying his lawyers won't be happy he did the interview.
"From house-fire heroism to SWAT stand-offs to full-blown arena riots, season two of Dark Side of the Cage pulls back the curtain on MMA's most extreme highs and devastating lows," the official show pitch says. "'Dark Side of the Cage' cuts through the glamour and glory of the MMA spectacle to reveal the never-before-told stories behind the sport's most iconic competitors, told by the fighters themselves."

It is tough to sweep a four-game series, unless you are the impossibly hot Boston Red Sox. Perhaps Shane Bieber took it upon himself to make Kyle Snyder, Kevin Cash, and the front office beliebers and effort to acquire him before the August 3rd deadline. Bieber had his second consecutive fantastic outing since the break with seven innings of one-run baseball allowing just three baserunners before handing it over to the A-pen to finish the game.
This was the type of game Toronto envisioned this winter, but has rarely been able to put together throguhout this frustrating season. The three runs scored today was the most runs the team has scored in their last six games, but it was the pitching that was story of the game and why the Rays offense was mostly lifeless today.
Bieber himself had just 8 swings and misses on 39 pitches, but he did a fantastic job working an extremely liberal strike zone to his advantage for seven innings:
The zone was questionable all day, but it was not until the 7th inning that any Rays batter challenged a pitch. Jonny DeLuca challenged a first pitch cutter that was well off the plate and had it overturned:
There were not many pitches more aggregiously wrong than this one, but Bieber certainly enjoyed a fair number of favorable strike calls in this contest yet the Rays were stubborn in using their challenges until DeLuca apparently had enough in the 7th inning:

Former Spurs ***** istant Chip Engelland is leaving Oklahoma City to join the Houston Rockets, according to a report from ESPN's Shams Charania.
Engelland, long known as one of the league's best shooting coaches, built his reputation over nearly two decades on Spurs coaching staffs under Gregg Popovich from 2005-22. While in San Antonio, he built a relationship with Rockets coach Ime Udoka, who had two stints with the Spurs as a player (2007-09 and 2010-11) and served as an ***** istant coach from 2012-19.
After leaving the Spurs four years ago, Engelland helped build a championship team in Oklahoma City along with head coach Mark Daigneault and general manager Sam Presti, another former Spurs staffer. The Thunder went from the fourth-worst record in the league the season before Engelland arrived to having the best record in the Western Conference for three straight seasons and an NBA ***** le in 2025.

This time last year the young and talented Motherwell youngster Lennon Miller was a reported Celtic target, only for the highly regarded midfielder to go and crush any hopes the Celtic supporters had of seeing him in the hoops when he signed for Serie A side Udinese in a £4.5 million plus deal.
Miller who just missed out on a place in the Scotland World Cup squad has impressed at the Italian side, making 26 appearances, and scoring one goal in all competitions in his debut campaign.
In my opinion, he's a player Celtic should still be interested in, as we look to bolster our midfield, an area which will be ever so weaker come the start of the new Scottish Premiership campaign, due to the impending departures of Arne Engels, and Reo Hatate.

Renewable energy developer Avantus said its Aratina 1 solar-plus-storage project has entered commercial operation in California. The 200-MW/500-MWh installation in Kern County has long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Central Coast Community Energy (3CE) and Silicon Valley Clean Energy (SVCE), a pair of community choice aggregators.Avantus on July 20 said the company will have a controlling stake in Aratina 1 and will operate the facility. The company said the project is among several **** ets it will oversee as it expands from a clean energy developer to an independent power producer (IPP)."Aratina 1 coming online marks a major milestone for Avantus as an independent power producer, providing reliable clean power to California communities for decades to come," said Cliff Graham, CEO of Avantus. "I'm incredibly proud of what Team Avantus built here. Their expertise across development, construction, financing and operations, and the trust our financing and CCA partners have placed in us, are the foundation we're building our long-term IPP model on.""The Aratina project is a powerful example of how community choice energy turns climate goals into real projects on the ground," said Robert Shaw, CEO of 3CE. The Phoenix Suns formally introduced forward Miles Bridges on Wednesday, July 22, and between general manager Brian Gregory and Bridges himself, they openly discussed and answered every question put forth to them during their media availability at the team’s performance center.
In the spirit of the Suns’ boastful motto about “alignment,” “accountability,” “culture” and making their fan base always feel like “family,” it was essentially a slam dunk.
Bridges and Gregory were brutally honest regarding the trade that brought Bridges to Phoenix from the Charlotte Hornets, and addressed the positives as well as the negatives — namely the serious felony domestic violence charge leveled against Bridges in 2022.

Plymouth football coach Greg Souldourian told his players on Monday, July 20, that he is stepping down after six seasons leading the program.
Defensive coordinator Matt Penn was named interim head coach by athletic director Chaka Johnson.
Souldourian spent more than 20 years as a physical education and health teacher for Plymouth-Canton Community Schools. He was on staff for all but one of Plymouth's 23 seasons since starting its football program in 2004.

Not even a week after former Texas offensive lineman Cole Hutson filed for an age-based request for an additional season of eligibility after he was thought to have used up his four seasons at the conclusion of 2025, the NCAA has announced its decision to side with Hutson, who played in 48 games during his time at Texas, including 23 starts; throughout his era on the Forty Acres, Hutson spent time at guard and center. Prior to Hutson’s legal time filing the lawsuit requesting a temporary injunction last Friday, the former Texas starter was set to attend the Dallas Cowboys rookie minicamp after he wasn’t chosen earlier this year during the NFL Draft.

"We feel very comfortable with the overall, all the different aspects of the trade, getting another first-round pick back. I remember multiple years ago, the question was we have no first-round picks, but that pick that we are acquired, we're now gonna have seven straight years of first-round picks. Who would have thought it? And an additional second-round pick in that as well. I think the one thing you have to look at when you're talking about an unprotected versus these favorable among two teams and different things like that, we're always gonna be good. So where are our draft picks gonna be? Especially with the new rules and all those different things? That pick value down the road was not the same as it was a year ago because of the changes in the draft lottery and different things like that. So we felt very comfortable. We thought it was a fair deal, but most importantly, we got Miles Bridges. So that, in my opinion, tipped the scales for us."

Former Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold has an arraignment hearing before a judge in Tampa scheduled for Aug. 13, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports. He faces eight felony charges of kidnapping and robbery from his arrest last month.
The Lions released Arnold a day before he posted a $1 million bond and left the Hillsborough County (Florida) jail.
He was arrested on four counts each of kidnapping and armed robbery, which could bring a life sentence if he is convicted.
