New York governor Kathy Hochul will today (Monday) launch an 88-person exploratory committee to report on the feasibility and challenges of a formal bid to host the Winter Olympic Games, according to people with knowledge of the announcement who spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to do so publicly.
The potential bid would see New York City and Lake Placid partner to host the 2042 edition.
Earlier this year, Gov. Hochul told The Athletic that "significant" meetings had taken place as she seeks to return the Winter Olympics to New York state for the first time since 1980, which is best remembered for the Miracle on Ice when the U.S. hockey team defeated the Soviet Union. Gov. Hochul, while announcing the committee today, will also announce a $2.5 million funding commitment to create a monument in Lake Placid in honor of the Miracle on Ice team.
The Lake Placid-New York City Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games Exploratory Committee will have an eight-strong leadership group, which will include Ashley Walden, the president and CEO of the Olympic Regional Development Authority, as well as representation from the offices of Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand (both Democrats), sources said. It will also include Julie Su, appointed deputy mayor for economic justice of New York City by mayor Zohran Mamdani, as well as Hope Knight, the president of Empire State Development, the New York state economic development arm.
There is a 16-member sub-committee on finance, which includes John Collins, co-owner and operating partner of the New York Islanders, and Josh Cohen, the son of New York Mets owner Steve Cohen, who works as the team's vice president of business development. Randy Levine, the owner of the New York Yankees, is one of 12 members of a legal sub-committee, which also includes Robert Landau, the executive vice-president of NBC Universal, the long-time broadcaster of the Olympics in the United States.

MIAMI — Exhale. Because at some point during seasons, that's what Klay Thompson does. And then he becomes Klay Thompson again.
For all the metrics compiled by the Miami Heat during their now-completed 3-2 preseason schedule, one stands particularly stark:
In his four preseason appearances, Thompson shot 7 of 26 from the field, but even more starkly, only 3 of 20 on 3-pointers.
And yet history says not only isn't the sky falling for the four-time NBA champion and five-time All-Star, but he only is getting warmed up.
With a body of work lengthy enough where it offers ample context, the player who stands No. 4 on the NBA's all-time list of 3-pointers made stands in somewhat familiar territory.

Sevilla players Juan Iglesias and Kike Salas have criticised the refereeing following their side's 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid, with both questioning why the officials did not intervene over an alleged elbow by Arda Guler on Peque during the first half.
The incident became a major talking point after Real Madrid took control of the contest through goals from Guler and Kylian Mbappe.
The Sevilla players believe the contact on Peque should have been reviewed and potentially resulted in a red card, while Iglesias also highlighted a separate challenge involving Robbie Ure during Mbappe's goal.
Iglesias argued that the incident involving Guler and Peque deserved closer scrutiny, explaining that Sevilla's players had discussed the contact during half-time.
While stopping short of declaring the decision definitively incorrect, the defender made clear that he believed a foul had occurred.

Niclas Füllkrug has been a big success at Werder Bremen since returning on loan from West Ham in the summer, with a brace against SC Paderborn at the weekend taking his tally to seven goals in as many games for the Green-Whites this season.
Given Füllkrug's impressive form, questions are already being asked about Werder's chances of keeping the 33-year-old beyond this season, with sporting managing director Clemens Fritz addressing the topic on the Sky programme "Sky90 – die Fußballdebatte" on Sunday.
"Ultimately, there are three parties involved: West Ham, Niclas and Werder Bremen. And that is, of course, what makes it challenging. With two parties, things are sometimes a little easier," Fritz said.
One positive for Werder is that Füllkrug is happy at the club.
"Niclas feels comfortable in Bremen. He does us an enormous amount of good. Of course, I would be delighted if he stayed with us beyond this season, and I'm sure the whole of Bremen would feel the same. At the moment, however, it's still too early," Fritz added.

Real Madrid rediscovered their sparkle with an emphatic rout of Sevilla in a match that saw Arda Güler take charge, while Madrid fans celebrated Kylian Mbappé's clinical finishing and Yan Diomandé's emergence. However, the victory was not without controversy, as Sevilla were left furious with the officiating.
Rounding out the football action are a domestic transfer market stirred by Getafe's interest in Sergio Ramos, a struggling ***** nal's resilience in the Premier League, and Nico Paz's unstoppable form under Cesc Fàbregas in Italy.
Real Madrid delivered a commanding performance with a 4-1 victory over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu, inspired by a stellar display from Arda Güler. José Mourinho's side showed a dramatic improvement in their fluidity to set up a comfortable win, sealed by a brilliant Kylian Mbappé brace and another standout goal from youngster Yan Diomandé, establishing the Turkish midfielder as a cornerstone of Madrid's midfield for the immediate future.
The defeat left the Sevilla camp deeply aggrieved, with outrage spreading from the dressing room to the press room and the club's official channels as they left Madrid's ground. Coach Luis García Plaza and players including Kike Salas and Juan Iglesias openly argued that Güler should have been sent off for a heavy challenge on Peque, directing their criticism squarely at the handling of VAR.
On the transfer front, Getafe once again grabbed the headlines after president Ángel Torres surprisingly confirmed in public that Sergio Ramos is among the club's potential signings. Having already secured Dani Carvajal—who is ready to make his debut immediately—the Coliseum club's board is seeking another historic, headline-grabbing coup in Spanish football by bolstering its defence with the veteran former Real Madrid centre-back.

Bengaluru: When batters are scoring at 11.46 runs an over, even quality bowling attacks can be made to look ordinary. India's T20I series against the West Indies has exposed the vulnerability of the hosts' pace unit, with flat pitches, dew and short boundaries proving a punishing combination for bowlers.
West Indies' stunning 250-run chase in Ranchi, completed with nine **** to spare, prompted a stern **** sment from India head coach Gautam Gambhir.
"These bowlers are our bowlers, not someone else's bowlers. Their careers are at stake," he had said, underlining the scrutiny facing the attack.
With the exception of Indore, where India successfully defended 223, the bowlers struggled to contain a fearless West Indies batting line-up. While the absence of Jasprit **** rah and, to an extent, Hardik Pandya has been felt, the bigger concern for the team management is the inconsistency shown by Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav.
The two young quicks, Mayank and Prince, have alternated between brilliance and waywardness during the series, highlighting the challenges of adjusting to different match situations. The fourth T20I in Hyderabad offered a clear example. India conceded 18 extras, including 13 wides. Arshdeep accounted for six, while Mayank and Prince leaked two and one, respectively. Their attempts to execute wide yorkers and fuller deliveries repeatedly missed the mark, allowing the West Indies batters to maintain the pressure.
India's lack of proven T20 pace-bowling depth has consequently become a talking point. That has put renewed focus on the return of Bhuvneshwar **** ar, whose recall after nearly four years away from the national side could prove timely.
The experienced swing bowler has enjoyed a productive run in the IPL, taking 45 wickets across the last two seasons. More importantly, his success has been built on control and execution rather than sheer pace, qualities that India's younger quicks have often lacked in this series.
Conditions, however, have offered little respite to bowlers. High-scoring surfaces and heavy dew have meant that even small lapses have come at a significant cost.
As India prepare for a demanding tour of New Zealand, they know the challenges ahead will be very different. The pitches may offer more **** istance, but the key question remains whether the bowling group can quickly adapt and improve its consistency.
On the eve of the rain-affected series finale in Bengaluru, fast-bowling coach Morne Morkel urged observers to consider the physical and mental demands placed on modern cricketers.
"We sometimes forget that mental fatigue plays a big part. We have to manage that and be smart with it. Some of the players went for the Asian Games and then straight into a full series against the West Indies. These guys are also human," Morkel said.

Bengaluru: For Tilak Varma, the number next to his name on the team sheet matters far less than the one on the scoreboard at the end of the match.
The India T20I vice-captain has seen his role evolve considerably in recent months, moving from the top order to the finisher's role as the team continues to fine-tune its combinations. While adapting to different batting positions is rarely straightforward, the 23-year-old has embraced the challenge and put the team's needs ahead of personal preference.
Having begun his T20I career near the top of the order, Tilak now often finds himself walking in at No. 5 or 6. With Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opening, Ishan Kishan firmly established at No. 3 and skipper Shreyas Iyer occupying the next slot, opportunities higher up the order have become limited.
Rather than viewing it as a setback, Tilak sees it as another responsibility to master.
"Ishan is batting brilliantly at No. 3. So, for me, there is no option but to bat at 5 and 6 and do the job for the team. I am mentally prepared for that role and in the last few games, I have won matches from there. So, I am pretty confident," Tilak said after the rain-hit series decider against the West Indies in Bengaluru on Saturday.
The left-hander admitted that the transition from a top-order batter to a finisher has not been without its challenges.
"It's not easy to change from No. 3 to No. 5 or 6. It is slightly challenging. But I have been working on how I can finish games, and I love finishing games for the country," he said.
The demands of batting in the lower middle order are vastly different from those of a top-order role. There is little time to settle in, and the emphasis is on making an immediate impact rather than constructing an innings. Tilak said he has consciously altered his preparation to meet those demands.
"I have been working on it in the nets. Otherwise, it becomes tough. When you go in as a finisher and a slower ball comes into your arc, you need to be ready to hit it for six. In T20 cricket, if you bat at No. 5 or 6, you generally get only five or six overs, so I have had to change my approach."
Fortunately for Tilak, batting down the order is not entirely new territory.
"I batted lower down the order in my childhood as well. I have shots all around the ground and I am confident in my ability to adapt. Whether it is No. 3 or No. 5, I believe I have the technique to fit into any role for the team if I prepare well," he said.

The Investec Champions Cup campaign is underway with an intriguing opening round of action whetting the appetite for the season ahead.
This one-off weekend of fixtures serves only as an hors d'ouevres with the competition not resuming until after the Nations Championship in November, and the eight English clubs will have plenty to do when it picks up again.
While Gloucester secured an excellent draw against defending champions Bordeaux-Begles, only Northampton were successful in their opening outing of the Prem contingent as the United Rugby Championship and Top 14 sides showed their strength.
Here are five things we learned:
So much for the Prem being a league on the up with a clutch of sides ready to challenge for the first time in a while. Even in victory, Northampton were not at their best against Cardiff in the wet, with the English performance of the round undoubtedly that of Gloucester at a bouncing Kingsholm on Friday evening.

After a challenging 6-11 season last year in which he suffered a season-ending knee injury, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are back to their dominant selves. They improved to 5-0 on the season with a 22-6 win over the winless Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6.
After the game, Mahomes shared some insight into how he thinks about football now after going from playing in so many Super Bowls to struggling and suffering a serious injury last season.
"Last year, to me, football in perspective. We played in so many Super Bowls, and especially those last few, it was like we, I don't want to say coasted, but we didn't play our best football in the regular season and we just turned it on in the playoffs. Even last year when stuff wasn't going right, I was like, 'We're going to figure it out. It's just gonna happen.'"

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, and his wife Bianca Censori are used to wearing things that don't quite fit the vibe, and this week was no different. In the middle of an LA heat wave, the couple decided that a nearly 100-degree day was the perfect time to break out their winter wardrobes.
They had a low-key movie date in Westwood (@ The Grosby Group)
The couple stepped out together Sunday after a low-key movie date in Westwood, just one day after making a much more public appearance at ComplexCon. While the rest of Los Angeles was probably looking for the nearest air conditioner, Bianca was bundled up in a floor-length leather coat while Ye opted for a fur-trimmed jacket.
It does sometimes get chilly in a movie theater (@ The Grosby Group)
Censori went for an all-black look, wearing a shiny leather trench coat that fell all the way to the floor. The dramatic piece had structured shoulders, wide lapels, long sleeves, and a belted waist. Underneath, she wore a black hooded top with fitted black leggings.

Sophia Bush
The dichotomous trap of women needing to achieve absolute, contradictory perfectionism rang loud and clear in America Ferrera's now iconic speech in the 2023 Barbie movie and it certainly continues to resonate with Sophia Bush, who has never shied from speaking about mental health challenges.
"I think there's a lot of reasons we're still having this conversation," says Bush, who currently stars in Hulu psychological thriller Count My Lies and Grey's Anatomy (ABC), and is attached to reprise her role as Brooke Davis in Netflix's One Tree Hill sequel series.
"First and foremost, society only functions at the level it does because of women's unrecognized and unpaid labor. So the world is not exactly motivated to shift things in our favor because people feel like it'll come at a cost," she says. "But now we understand because of the data around those things… that if you could snap your fingers and create pay equity across gender lines—everyone would be doing better if women were doing better."
Bush cites a litany of women's rights that have been or are being rolled back. "They overturned Roe. Christian nationalism is on the rise and they don't think women should vote," she says. She points to the SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) Act and the tens of millions of married women in the U.S. the legislation would block from voting.

Olivia Colman joined her Wicker co-star Alexander Skarsgård on the red carpet for the film's screening at the 2026 BFI London Film Festival this evening, returning to the festival after attending opening night yesterday.
Courtesy of Celine
Wearing her hair down this time, Olivia opted for a black Celine gown with asymmetrical draping that gives the otherwise simple design an interesting twist. The contrast between the matte upper half and the sheen of the skirt is another detail I appreciate, preventing the look from falling flat.
But I just can't ignore the length.
There's far too much fabric gathering at the bottom. The structured hemline only adds to the heaviness, making the skirt look unnecessarily bulky when the rest of the gown has such a beautiful flow.

Kids today might know Matthew Modine best for his role as Dr Brenner in Stranger Things but the star got his start back in the '80s with hits like Full Metal Jacket (1987). The actor has appeared in not one but two Christopher Nolan classics, The Dark Knight Rises and Oppenheimer, so we'd recommend digging back into his filmography.
Before you swap over to your TV screen, catch up on what the actor has been doing since he worked with Nicolas Cage and the successful lives of his wife and two kids below.
Caridad met while Matthew was working as a chef in New York
Matthew's long-term wife Caridad Rivera was born in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and is of Puerto Rican descent. She works as a makeup and wardrobe artist. Caridad and husband Matthew are still going strong four decades in.
The actor told Closer Weekly: "I'd been in a few relationships and wanted someone to be friends with. What's most important is to have a partner you share interests with, who challenges you, who is smarter than you." He added: "Then the physical side is a bonus. I hit the jackpot and got both!

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's plans for a more private Ohio retreat have run into some very public objections. Neighbors of the $5.35 million Lake Erie estate are challenging proposed landscaping and fencing, raising concerns about a shared sewer line, wildlife, and how the changes could affect their longtime homes.
A six-foot fence has already received approval, but parts of the landscaping remain unresolved. The property's representatives, meanwhile, say they have adjusted the plans, paid for sewer repairs and added gates to accommodate residents.
ZUMAPRESS.com / MEGA
According to the Daily Mail, the dispute centers on an estate in Bratenahl, a village outside Cleveland. Property records cited by the outlet show that an LLC linked to Kelce purchased the mansion in March. The 21,000-square-foot property features eight bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, and a two-bedroom guest cottage. Built in 1895, it also has a former ballroom converted into a game room and home theater.
But proposed changes to the grounds have become a sticking point with nearby residents. Katherine Bolton, who has lived next door for 35 years, described news of the new owners as a "tremendous blow" to "the peace and quiet in Bratenahl."

Ex-Prince Andrew reportedly does not have that much of a miserable life while in exile. The former Duke of York lost all his royal ******* les after the news of his scandalous past in relation to the Jeffrey Epstein case. The former Prince also had to leave his long-time residence, the Royal Lodge, within Windsor Great Park, and move to the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. The new report came amid news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor challenging the British police warrants used to search two of his properties.
Ex-Prince Andrew has reportedly been "having a very nice time" while in exile in the middle of his ongoing scandal. As reported by The Royal Observer, a source made this claim about the former Duke of York to The Times.
The former Prince has been staying at the Marsh Farm on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk after he had to leave his long-time residence, the Royal Lodge. According to the report, while moving away from a mansion with thirty rooms to a house with five bedrooms might appear to be a big loss, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has not completely lost his "charmed lifestyle."
Furthermore, per the news outlet, the insider told The Times that Ex-Prince Andrew "goes out, he goes off shooting with friends, he sees his old chums who are very loyal to him." According to the insider, the former Duke of York had not been "sitting around feeling sorry for himself any more." In the meantime, the former Prince's recent decision to take legal action against Thames Valley Police has caused quite the buzz among royal watchers.
Meanwhile, the publication further reported that the source also said to The Times that "There appears to have been a 'something must be done' moment where his lawyers, to appease him, will have said 'Don't worry, sir, we will handle it.'" This legal move came after the former Duke of York's arrest in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Halle Berry's fiancé Van Hunt is doing his best to support her amid her ongoing custody battle with ex-husband Olivier Martinez, a source tells Star.
"He loves her and wants to be there for her," says the source. "But it's incredibly tough for him to know what to do or what to say because she's so on edge all the time."
On Thursday, October 1, People reported that Martinez, 60, is requesting sole custody of his and Berry's 13-year-old son Maceo, alleging that the Oscar-winning actress "physically abused" the teenager in late September and that there have been "other instances of abuse" in the past.
"There's no doubt he's finding it very challenging to be with her right now," the source says of Hunt, 56, who was said to be present during the alleged altercation. "This is not an easy road at the moment, that's for sure."
