Michael Wright, an actor known for his roles in the films The Five Heartbeats and Sugar Hill, has died at age 70.
Wright died on Wednesday, August 19, after suffering heart failure and complications of Marchiafava-Bignami disease, his family told TMZ.
Marchiafava-Bignami disease, or MBD, is a rare condition involving the erosion of the corpus callosum, the area that facilitates communication between the brain's two hemispheres, according to Verywell Health. Symptoms include paranoia, psychosis, seizures, dementia, difficulty speaking, and difficulty moving limbs, the site adds.
Born in New York City on April 30, 1956, Wright played Eddie, the troubled lead singer of a fictional R&B group, in the 1991 musical drama The Five Heartbeats, written by Robert Townsend and Keenen Ivory Wayans and directed by Townsend. Entertainment Weekly critic Owen Gleiberman said Wright gave a "a stunning performance" in the film and "makes [Eddie] sleek, with undercurrents of hostility and danger."
Three years later, Wright starred opposite Wesley Snipes in the crime drama Sugar Hill, written by Barry Michael Cooper and directed by Leon Ichaso. Wright and Snipes played Raynathan and Roemello Skuggs, respectively, two brothers working in the drug trade for the mob boss who ruined their family. Los Angeles Times reviewer Kenneth Turan said the film "at various moments … gets fine work from Michael Wright."

Brian Hickerson's second attempt to clear felony domestic violence convictions involving Hayden Panettiere was denied three days before the actress died, after prosecutors challenged representations that he was now sober.
At an Aug. 13 hearing in Los Angeles, the prosecution cited a May interview Hickerson gave about his past relationship with Panettiere and alleged that he appeared to be under the influence of a stimulant. Court records obtained by PEOPLE show prosecutors also pointed to his 2025 encounters with law enforcement while opposing the petition.
Hickerson had asked the court to dismiss two felony convictions for corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant from a domestic violence case in which Panettiere was a victim. Judge Olivia Rosales rejected the request, saying Hickerson had not remained free of new offenses.
The hearing took place three days before Panettiere died at age 36 in Greenville, South Carolina. Her death remains under investigation, and authorities have not established any connection between the allegations raised during Hickerson's court hearing and the circumstances of her death.
The interview cited in court was conducted by TMZ's Charlie Neff in May, ahead of the publication of Panettiere's memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. In the original TMZ interview, Hickerson discussed Panettiere's account of their abusive relationship and acknowledged conduct described in the book, including an incident in which he threatened her with a phone. "I did it. I did it," Hickerson said while discussing that episode.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN — AJ Peña and Justin Carcel are practicing for a 2026 college football season in which they might not play.
Jim Fleming isn't certain whether or not his All-American edge rusher and veteran defensive back will be available.
Players and coaches alike are still attempting to pick their way through an ever more complicated landscape involving the NCAA, the legal system, additional years of eligibility and much more. What's definite is this — the University of Rhode Island will visit Merrimack for a Friday night kickoff, the No. 7 team in the nation looking for a third straight Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth.
"I'm in the middle of it, but I'm trying not to think about it too much," Peña said after Friday morning's practice at Meade Stadium. "I've got Aug. 28 — that's really what I'm focused on. It's Week 1."
Truthfully, that everyday preparation is all Peña can control. State courts, circuit courts, a governing body in college sports that keeps getting put on the deck through temporary injunctions and restraining orders — it's a dizzying current state of affairs. Fleming has been in coaching for more than four decades and couldn't imagine such changes when he started out in the 1980s.

Brian Hickerson was accused of appearing to be under the influence of drugs just three days before the death of his on-and-off girlfriend, Hayden Panettiere.
The allegation came up during an August 13 court hearing in Los Angeles, where prosecutors opposed Hickerson's request to have his 2021 felony domestic violence convictions involving Panettiere expunged, according to People.
During the hearing, a prosecutor reportedly pointed to a recent interview Hickerson gave to TMZ and argued that he appeared to be "visibly high." The prosecutor also questioned whether Hickerson had actually maintained sobriety as he claimed.
Hickerson had sought to have the convictions removed after completing requirements ***** ociated with his sentence. However, prosecutors cited additional legal trouble involving drugs, including two arrests in August 2025. One of those arrests involved an allegation that he was under the influence of a controlled substance.
The judge ultimately denied Hickerson's petition.

UConn legend Geno Auriemma believes WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert can't control what players say, but there is one thing she can do.
Look, the WNBA is practically suffocating under its own growth right now. Every single week, actual basketball gets shoved to the backseat so the internet can fight another exhausting culture war.
That frustration finally blew wide open when Sophie Cunningham took a sledgehammer to Cathy Engelbert's leadership. Cunningham didn't hold back, basically suggesting Engelbert is out of her depth and could halt the future progress and development of the WNBA.
When players are openly talking about replacing the commissioner, you know there's an issue.
However, her job hasn't been made easy by all the outside noise involving the transgender situation, and former NBA players like Enes Kanter and Royce White.

Will the Dodgers be heading toward new ownership? Will Mark Walter sell the World Series champions? These rumors have circulated among baseball fans since Walter sold the LA Lakers for $12.5 billion, just months after acquiring a controlling stake in the NBA franchise from the Buss family.
According to reports, the DOJ is investigating the CEO of Guggenheim Partners over alleged loan fraud, which allegedly prompted Walter to sell his majority stake in the Lakers.
As speculation intensifies, team president and part-owner Stan Kasten was asked by the media to explain the developments involving Walter and the federal investigation.
"I'm not contemplating anything about the investigation. If you are prepared to already conclude the investigation before anyone else is, you can do that. But that's what you're trying to do. I'm not going to do that," Kasten told the media.
When a reporter drew comparisons between Walter and the way the previous owner, Frank McCourt, ran the ballclub into bankruptcy, Kasten said such an "inappropriate" comparison should not be made.

The Baltimore Ravens receiver was arrested in June for the incident after turning himself in to the Walton County (Ga.) Sheriff the same day.
Bateman allegedly broke the window of a car with his three month old child inside. The car belonged to the mother of his child.
"We are aware of the situation involving Rashod and have been in direct communication with him," the Ravens said in a statement. "We notified the league office and have been cooperating throughout the process. As this is a pending legal matter, we will not have further comment."

Daveigh Chase's parents are at odds over who should manage the late actress' six-figure estate. Her father, John Schwallier, has filed court documents opposing a request from her mother, Cathy Chase, to serve as administrator.
Schwallier instead wants the court to appoint an independent fiduciary. The filing also cited Daveigh's relationships with both parents before her death in June.
According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, Schwallier objected to Cathy's petition and nominated Megan Boling for the role. Boling identified herself as a neutral licensed professional fiduciary.
The filing asks the court to appoint a public administrator if it does not select Boling.
Schwallier's objection also addressed Daveigh's history with her mother. The documents state that The Ring star became emancipated from Cathy while she was still a minor following "allegations of financial irregularities" involving her mother. According to the filing, the two remained separated afterward.

The Detroit Tigers spent the trade deadline loading up on young pitching.
Less than three weeks later, a frustrating pattern has developed.
Right-hander Brady Smith, one of the three prospects Detroit acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers for Tarik Skubal, was placed on the seven-day injured list by High-A West Michigan on Thursday. Minor League Baseball's official transaction log confirmed the move after Smith left his Aug. 15 start with an apparent issue involving his throwing arm.
The Tigers have not announced the specific nature or severity of Smith's injury.
That distinction matters. An IL placement is concerning. It is not an invitation to diagnose an arm injury from the couch.

Juventus confirm Arthur Melo's contract termination, 'an operation that generates a negative economic impact of approximately €6m.'
Juventus confirmed Arthur's contract termination on Friday.
The Brazilian midfielder had returned to the club after a one-season loan spell at Gremio but had not played a competitive game for the Bianconeri since the 2021-22 campaign.
Juventus confirmed the midfielder's contract termination on X, formerly Twitter, adding more details through an official statement, as quoted by Sport Mediaset: "This operation generates a negative economic impact of approximately €6m as a result of adjusting the net book value of the player's right to sporting services," the Bianconeri said.
Arthur moved to Juventus from Barcelona in the summer of 2020 in a player-plus-cash swap deal involving Miralem Pjanic.

Layoffs and facility closures are mounting across U.S. freight, distribution and manufacturing networks, with more than 7,000 jobs affected by recently announced workforce reductions involving companies ranging from Tyson Foods and FedEx to Ryder, CJ Logistics America and Daimler Truck.
The largest reduction comes from Tyson Foods, which is reportedly eliminating more than 3,000 jobs as it closes facilities in Joslin, Illinois, and Eagle Mountain, Utah. The food giant said it is shifting beef operations toward Nebraska, Kansas and Texas amid what it described as a historic cattle shortage.
Wholesale distributor Essendant also warned of sweeping cuts affecting more than 1,200 employees across six states as the company attempts to secure additional capital or find a buyer.
WARN notices show approximately 644 jobs affected in Illinois, 192 in Georgia, 150 in Pennsylvania, 136 in Texas, 103 in California and 53 in Arizona. The reductions are scheduled to begin Oct. 3. The company has warned that it could cease operations and liquidate if financing or a sale cannot be secured.
The announcements are part of a broader wave of restructuring hitting transportation, warehousing, fulfillment and manufacturing operations.

CHICAGO, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Merck and Moderna's success with a personalized cancer vaccine designed to keep melanoma at bay opens a new avenue of treatment that doctors hope will work against many types of tumors.
Unlike chemotherapy, which kills both healthy and cancerous cells, or immunotherapy, which revs up the immune system, personalized cancer ‌vaccines train the immune system to specifically target mutations found only on a person's tumor.
Merck and Moderna said on Wednesday their vaccine helped prevent the return and spread of ‌disease in a large trial involving more than 1,000 melanoma patients. They had localized tumors that were removed surgically, but had a high risk of recurrence. Moderna expects that thousands of melanoma patients could benefit within the first few years of approval.
"It is a big deal for the field in general," said Dr. Ryan Sullivan, director of the Center for Melanoma at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute. "With this positive study, there is hope (and likely investment to follow) that these approaches may change the way we treat cancer more broadly."
The trial result is "a monumental leap forward," validating mRNA technology as a cancer treatment, said Dr. Julie Gralow, chief medical officer of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Evidence about Karmelo Anthony's alleged history with knives and violence was kept from the jury that convicted him of murder, prosecutors said Thursday as they fought his push for another trial.
The allegations surfaced during Anthony's new-trial hearing, where lead prosecutor Bill Wirske said Anthony's former girlfriend went to his school on the morning of the stabbing and reported that she was afraid of him.
Wirske also said the state had text messages and other material it contends showed Anthony's interest in violence and knives. None of that material was presented to jurors during Anthony's murder trial.

The prosecutor said Anthony's original defense team entered a verbal agreement with the state to keep character evidence involving Anthony, Austin Metcalf and Austin's brother, Hunter Metcalf, out of the trial.

Following the Cleveland Cavaliers' swift and painful Eastern Conference finals exit at the hands of the eventual champion New York Knicks, an awkward offseason cloud hung eerily in the atmosphere. Not only was there a strong sense of doubt as to whether that iteration of the team could return to that stage from a basketball standpoint, but its future altogether was in question.
Three months later, at least one of those questions has been answered. Donovan Mitchell committed his future to the franchise, signing a four-year, $273 million extension. His running mate, James Harden, agreed to a three-year, $97 million fully guaranteed contract Thursday, sources told Yahoo Sports. And as of Wednesday night, another reinforcement arrived.
In the latest installment of the "Anything but the Knicks" campaign, the Cavaliers reportedly acquired restricted free-agent wing Peyton Watson in a sign-and-trade deal involving the Nuggets and Clippers. Sharpshooter Max Strus was sent to L.A.. and a 2031 unprotected first along with a 2032 second-rounder headed to Denver. Upon joining Cleveland, Watson will sign a four-year, $88 million contract.
(According to sources close to Harden, the veteran, having seen how rival teams in the conference had beefed up, is fully onboard with Watson's arrival and decided to delay his negotiations to give Cleveland the opportunity to upgrade its scoring and defense — while also keen to avoid a previous situation with the Clippers with non-guaranteed money on just a two-year deal.)
We'll get into what this all means for Cleveland shortly, but I can't quite grasp how fascinating this is from a Nuggets perspective. Typically, restricted free agents don't hold much leverage over their incumbent teams when it comes to negotiations (see Jalen Duren, Bennedict Mathurin, Tari Eason, the list goes on). But how and why Watson's situation played out differently is worth mentioning. The whispers of the 23-year-old's unhappiness with how Denver valued him, believing he should have been on par with teammate Christan Braun (earning $25 million annually) grew louder as the offseason dragged on, as well as the list of suitors eagerly waiting in the wings for an opportunity to capitalize. This, in conjunction with the Nuggets' limits on their financial flexibility and desire to generate some breathing room — thanks in large part to oddly matching a $12 million offer sheet for Spencer Jones and a realization of their own ceiling — created an environment in which Watson could land in a desired spot.

Not Australia, England, India or Pakistan. Spain have become the team with the longest winning streak in international cricket, breaking the record previously held by Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh's Australia.

Spain are currently playing in the Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifiers in Southern Finland and have won all their matches in the tournament so far. Their latest victory came against Bulgaria on August 18, when they chased down a target of 60 in just 29 deliveries, winning by nine wickets.

Spain moved past Australia's record when they beat Finland in their opening match on August 14. That victory was their 21st in a row in international cricket, taking them one win beyond Australia's previous record of 20.

They have since extended the streak to 24 consecutive victories after beating the Isle of Man, Luxembourg and Bulgaria.

Spain's 24-match winning run has included T20I series against the Isle of Man and Jersey, as well as two series against Croatia. The two Croatia series were separated by the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifier in 2024, where Spain finished second after one of their matches was abandoned.
Australia's previous record of 20 consecutive international wins came across Tests and ODIs under Waugh and Ponting.

The run began on January 11, 2003, when Australia beat England in Hobart. It continued until the third Test against the West Indies in Bridgetown in May 2003.

Australia's winning run finally ended when the Waugh-led side lost the fourth Test against the West Indies.

During that period, Australia went unbeaten in the 2003 ODI World Cup after winning all their matches in a tri-series involving England and Sri Lanka. They then switched to Test cricket and won three matches against the West Indies.

Ponting captained Australia in the ODI tri-series and the World Cup, while Waugh led the team in Tests.

Australia played 17 ODIs and three Tests during their 20-match winning streak.

Spain have now gone past that mark, extending their international winning run to 24 matches.

A deputy with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office showed up at the University of Colorado campus last week to serve civil papers to Deion Sanders while the coach was at an open practice and inaccessible.
The officer was informed that the Buffaloes coach was "unavailable at the time to receive receipt of the papers," a spokesperson with the sheriff's office said Wednesday. Sanders is being subpoenaed to testify as part of a bankruptcy trial involving his son, Shilo, that begins on Aug. 31, according to USA Today.
The Colorado athletic department had no additional information. The Buffaloes open the season on Sept. 3 at Georgia Tech.
The deputy arrived on campus at 10:22 a.m. on Aug. 11 with civil papers. It was the day the Buffaloes held an open practice with specific rules in place that nothing observed could be reported, published or shared.
Carrie Haverfield, a senior communications specialist for the sheriff's office, wrote in an email to The **** ociated Press that it's not uncommon for civil papers to take several attempts to serve.

Talk about arriving in Test cricket with a bang. Just minutes after Manav Suthar bowled debutant Keshara Nuwantha to seal India's emphatic 165-run win over Sri Lanka in the first Test at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, heavy rain lashed the venue.

By then, however, the damage had been done, with the young left-arm spinner delivering a performance for the ages.

Suthar ripped through Sri Lanka's lower order in a sensational spell. In the 76th over, he bowled a three-wicket maiden, dismissing the resolute Sonal Dinusha (84; 128b, 8x4, 1x6), who was caught at leg slip by Dhruv Jurel, before removing Prabhat Jayasuriya for a duck off the very next ball. Though he missed out on a hat-trick, Suthar completed his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket by having Lahiru ****** ara caught behind.

His late burst earned him figures of 6-55 in 23.4 overs as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 206 in 77.4 overs while chasing an improbable 372. The 24-year-old finished with match figures of 10/131 in 45.2 overs after taking 4-76 in the first innings, making him the undisputed architect of India's victory and making the team's 600th Test memorable.

The victory also kept India firmly in contention for a place in the 2027 World Test Championship final. They remain fifth in the standings but improved their points percentage to 53.33 while Sri Lanka stayed sixth on 33.33. Australia currently lead the table, followed by South Africa. With one match left in the series, Sri Lanka can no longer win it but will aim to deny India a series victory in the second Test beginning on Sunday.

Chasing what would have been the highest successful fourth-innings total in Galle, Sri Lanka never threatened after beginning the final day at 84-4. While Suthar dominated proceedings, pacer Prasidh Krishna also played a key role, producing a fiery spell to finish with 2-16 from 10 overs.

Prasidh's second wicket came after an intriguing exchange involving Niroshan ****** wella. Amid constant chatter from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who challenged him to play the hook shot and jokingly suggested he could recommend him to his IPL coach ****** ar Sangakkara, ****** wella appeared distracted.

Attempting an ambitious stroke after backing away from the stumps, the left-hander top-edged to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and departed for 10.

Kuldeep Yadav, meanwhile, looked off-colour, returning figures of 1/38 from 11 overs, which could prompt discussions about giving rookie off-spinner Saransh Jain an opportunity in Colombo.

José E. Feliciano looks on during the Game 2 of the MLB World Tour Mexico City Series between the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks at Alfredo Harp Helu Stadium. The record sale of the Padres to him is already playing into salary cap discourse. (Photo by Meg McLaughlin / The San Diego Union-Tribune via Getty Images)
It may seem odd that the sale of the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Lakers would become a flashpoint for Major League Baseball's push for a salary cap, but make no mistake, the league and the MLB Players **** ociation are already teeing it up.
For all the talk by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and other executives in the league about listening to the fans regarding implementing a salary cap, underneath the surface is something tied to it that would massively inflate owner profits: increased franchise valuations. A salary cap, with its floor, ceiling, and other constraints on player contracts, creates cost certainty and therefore improves the value of the franchise itself.
Within the last week, two club sales highlight the differences between MLB and the NBA. Both have details that provide context over some of the talking points that the headline figures provide.
On Monday, MLB's owners unanimously approved the record-setting $3.8 billion sale to the new ownership group of the San Diego Padres, led by incoming control person José E. Feliciano and his wife and business partner, Kwanza Jones. The vote, conducted by conference call, does not close the books entirely on the sale. Approval remains contingent on closing the transaction involving the controlling interest in the club with the Seidler family, which the league said is "expected in the weeks ahead."

Greenhaven Road Capital, an investment management company, released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The fund achieved an approximate 11% net return in the second quarter, indicating progress from the first quarter. Key changes to the portfolio will include lower concentration and increased investments with near-term catalysts, alongside a proactive stance on profit-taking. Despite declines in market multiples, underlying businesses continue to grow, suggesting a favorable positioning for returns. Additionally, reviewing the Fund's top five holdings could help identify its best picks for 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Greenhaven Road Capital highlighted Burford Capital Limited (NYSE:BUR). As outlined in previous letters and the presentation sent last quarter, Burford has invested more than $150M in price-fixing cases involving proteins—chicken, beef, turkey, and pork. Former Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold appears to be headed for the Seattle Seahawks, but there are a few roadblocks in the way before the former first-round pick can see the field.
Arnold and the Seahawks have agreed upon a contract, but Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said recently that they're working through some things before they officially sign him.
"We're working through that and when's the best time for him to come in, but we have an agreement with him and we'll see," Macdonald said."But I just really don't know what, you know, how we're gonna do it."
Arnold is currently facing eight felony charges from an incident in Florida involving an alleged armed robbery and kidnapping. According to the latest reports, his next court date in the trial is Oct. 5.
According to the latest report from Ian Rapoport, this process is expected to move slowly for the Seahawks, and "it will take a while" before they sign Arnold. One huge blockade in this process is the fact that Arnold, according to Rapoport, will go on the Commissioner Exempt List once he signs with a team.

The new season is just around the corner and the transfer market is heating up. Serie A 2026/27 officially kicks off on Saturday with the opening round of fixtures, which will wrap up on Monday night, while negotiations continue to deliver twists and turns, with Italian clubs busy both in incoming and outgoing deals.
Watch the entire Serie BKT live with LaB Channel on OneFootball: subscribe for just €9.99 per month!
With exactly two weeks to go until the summer window closes, clubs are still working to hand their respective coaches new additions ahead of the upcoming season. Let's take a look at the most important updates of the day involving Serie A's top clubs.
Franck Kessié's future is still far from decided. The Ivorian midfielder has firmly ended up in Al-Ittihad's sights, with the club ready to convince him with a particularly significant financial offer. The former Milan man, however, has not yet made up his mind and is still considering the possibility of returning to Serie A.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Kessié is stalling because he wants to wait for Juventus before making a decision. The Bianconeri are keeping contacts with his entourage alive, but the main issue remains his salary, which the Ivorian would have to lower to help make the deal happen. In the meantime, Al-Ittihad continue to push in an attempt to get it over the line.

The officiating in the WNBA is back under the spotlight after a viral replay involving Caitlin Clark.
The friction between Caitlin Clark and the rest of the WNBA stems from a mix of rookie initiation, intense spotlight, and physical play.
Many fans feel Clark is target number one, pointing to moments like Chennedy Carter's away-from-the-ball shoulder block, or her heated battles with college rival Angel Reese.
While some people argue referees aren't doing enough to protect her, WNBA veterans maintain that rough defense and hard fouls are simply standard welcome-to-the-league moments every rookie faces.
However, a call during the Indiana Fever's win over the Atlanta Dream has caught the attention.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Iranian clubs were drawn against Qatari and United Arab Emirates opponents in the group stage of the AFC Champions League Elite on Tuesday despite the ongoing conflict in the region.
Play begins on Sept. 14 with matches involving Iranian teams to be held in neutral countries.
Tehran's Esteghlal and Tabriz-based Tractor will face UAE sides Al Ain, Al Wasl and Shabab Al Ahli, and Qatari clubs Al Gharafa, Al Sadd and Al Shamal.
Esteghlal and Tractor avoided the heavily favored Saudi Arabia contingent.
Since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran in February, Tehran has struck targets in Qatar and the UAE, saying it is retaliating for allowing American bases to be used for strikes.

Patrick Vieira, a native of Dakar, is the new head coach of the Senegal national team. The former France midfielder was appointed this Tuesday, even as the dismissal procedure involving Pape Thiaw still lingers in the background.
In its brief statement, the Senegalese Football Federation specified that "the date of the official unveiling and the next steps in his appointment will be announced at a later time."
The length of his contract has not been officially disclosed.
Vieira's first challenge will be to lead the Lions of Teranga to qualification for the next 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The qualifiers will begin as early as September.

WNBA forced to clarify Sophie Cunningham stance after Reddit controversy erupts originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The WNBA found itself pulled into another controversy involving Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, even though the league had nothing to do with the decision that sparked the backlash. Cunningham's name reportedly was filtered by moderators of the independently operated r/WNBA subreddit, preventing some users from publishing posts or comments about the veteran guard. The restriction quickly drew criticism from fans who believed an official WNBA community was censoring discussion of one of the league's most recognizable players.
There was one major problem with that **** umption: The subreddit is not operated by the WNBA. As frustration spread across social media, a league spokesperson issued a brief statement distancing the organization from the Reddit community.
"The WNBA does not moderate or have any affiliation with the r/WNBA subreddit," the league said, according to Khristina Williams.
The clarification did not settle the broader debate, but it established that the decision came from volunteer Reddit moderators rather than league officials.
