Revenue fell 3% to $530 million, yet the company nearly halved its adjusted operating loss and raised full-year earnings guidance to the top end of its range. Johnston & Murphy is running its own streak, with comparable sales up 4% in its third consecutive positive quarter, helped by a newly extended, multiyear partnership with Peyton Manning and a broader shift in menswear toward more refined, put-together dressing. Companywide, adjusted gross margin expanded 140 basis points to 47.2%, and the adjusted operating loss narrowed to $8 million from $14 million a year ago. Genesco also collected $22.5 million in tariff refunds during the quarter and cut total debt to $15.8 million from $71 million a year earlier, giving a new CFO and a new Schuh president a far healthier balance sheet to work with as they settle into their roles.
The drag comes almost entirely from Schuh, Genesco's UK chain, where comparable sales fell 9% as management deliberately pulled back on discounting to protect margin. Executives were blunt about the cost of that choice. CEO Mimi Vaughn said "the UK consumer market remains challenged and price sensitive," and the Schuh turnaround is expected to take longer than the one already underway at Journeys. That pressure is now baked into guidance. Earlier this year, we saw a number of mall retailers close locations, despite July 2026 Placer.ai data revealing that foot traffic across all three mall formats grew year over year. As part of my retail coverage for TheStreet, I reported on Vera Bradley cutting its traditional mall footprint by more than 43%, and Fossil Group quietly closing 219 stores over five years.
Most retailers choosing not to renew their mall leases are shifting their strategies. Some are pivoting to open-air shopping centers, which have been outperforming traditional malls for a while, while others are responding to changing consumer preferences by investing more in their online presence.

For the three months ended 1 August 2026, Nashville-based footwear retailer Genesco recorded a 3% decline in net sales to $530m.

Dynamo Dresden took all three points at the expense of promotion candidates Darmstadt courtesy of an early strike. The visitors only have one point from the first two games of the campaign before more challenging fixtures against Hannover and Kaiserslautern.
Boosted by their vociferous fans, Dresden started the game positively. Similarly, Darmstadt once again had a poor start to a game as they conceded inside the first fifteen minutes.

Brooklyn Nets guards Egor Demin and Mikel Brown Jr. are in the midst of an important summer as both players will have to work on their flaws in their game. Brooklyn saw Demin and Brown share the floor together over the course of the California Classic and Las Vegas Summer League, but there are those around the NBA wondering how effective the duo can be next season.
"But how good the Nets are in 2026-27 is not as important as how good they can be a few seasons from now, so it's important that they hit on their Lottery picks from the last two drafts," John Schuhmann wrote for NBA.com when discussing the Nets and where they rank in the Eastern Conference at the moment. NBA.com ranks Brooklyn as the 14th-best team in the East, but that number could shift depending on how Demin and Brown play next year.
"Demin and Mikel Brown Jr. combined to take 51 (60%) of their 85 Summer League shots from 3-point range, probably too high a rate given the former's size and the latter's explosiveness," Schuhmann continued. "Brown will need some time to find his way, but the time is now for Demin to take a big step forward and show that there's a brighter future for this franchise."
Heading into next season, Demin and Brown are likely to be the starting backcourt for the Nets with the rest of the lineup being filled by forward Michael Porter Jr. and Julius Randle along with center Day'Ron Sharpe. Demin entrenched himself as a starter last season for Fernandez, but Brown still has to compete with Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf in training camp for the starting point guard spot.
As Schuhmann alluded to, the Nets know what they will be getting from Porter, Randle, and Sharpe so it will be on Demin and Brown to step up if Brooklyn is going surpass expectations.
