Memphis football and Ole Miss haven't played each other since 2019. And it doesn't sound like they will anytime soon.
"Not currently," Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter said on Sept. 14, when asked if there had been any recent discussions about future games with Memphis. "Our schedule is pretty solid for the next few years out. Being regional and being close, it's certainly something that we may look at in the future. But we don't have any plans for that in the immediate future."
The teams have met 63 times, but the last one was a Memphis win at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in 2019. In the past, the Tigers would play at least one power conference team every season. But that has become extremely difficult because of changes across the sport, and they don't have a power conference opponent on the schedule for 2026 or 2027.
Chief among those changes is the SEC's move to nine conference games, which means one less spot to schedule a nonconference opponent.
"It just depends," Carter said. "The way scheduling goes now with nine conference games, you're trying to figure out what this new model is going to look like moving forward. Obviously we've had some games in the past, and could in the future. But not right now and not in the immediate future."

SOUTH BEND — It didn't take Teddy Jarrard very long to get some game action for Notre Dame football.
Thanks to the Week 2 scheduling of overmatched Rice, a 44.5-point underdog, Jarrard followed Noah Grubbs into Saturday's runaway win. He entered the game with Notre Dame leading 52-0 with 6:00 remaining in the 4th quarter.

Ben Shelton has been handed a potential blow ahead of his US Open final against Alexander Zverev, with girlfriend Trinity Rodman unlikely to be in the stands because of a scheduling clash.
The American tennis star booked his place in his first Grand Slam final by beating Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 on Friday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

When the NFL released its season schedule in May, the league's calculated risk flashed.
In a vacuum, scheduling the Denver Broncos to face the Kansas City Chiefs for the "Monday Night Football" season opener made perfect sense. Two competitive teams with star quarterbacks and Super Bowl-winning coaches playing a division game? The intrigue was obvious.
But zoom out, and zoom back to May: The schedule-makers were banking on answers yet undelivered. The Chiefs' quarterback, two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes, was still rehabilitating from tearing his left ACL and LCL on Dec. 14. The Broncos' quarterback, Bo Nix, had undergone one surgery after a Jan. 17 ankle fracture and another in April to clean up bone spurs.
Neither injury seemed likely to threaten the quarterbacks' careers. But starting Week 1? Back in May, banking on that was more optimistic than certain.
Fast forward to now, and both Nix and Mahomes are on track to start Monday night after fully participating in their respective training camps. Nix dissolved concerns about his limitations early in camp when throwing a 48-yard pass on the run, Broncos head coach Sean Payton told Yahoo Sports. Nix also played in the preseason.

MORRAL — Forget beating a rival in a Northwest Central Conference match. Elgin was just happy to be back on the volleyball court.
The Comets hadn't played a match in 12 days and just once in the last 18. Still, Elgin showed very little rust Thursday, Sept. 10, at Ridgedale, winning in three sets 25-19, 25-13, 25-21.
"They were ready to just get back on the court and not against each other," Elgin coach Caitlin Gracely said.
It was a scheduling quirk and not by design, she said, as a couple matches had to be moved to later in the season. Thus, they had a long layoff just days after the start of the 2026 season.
"I'm thankful for the break being in the beginning and not in the middle (of the season). That's the only thing I can be thankful for. I did not like that," Gracely said. "You can't give them a bunch of days off. You give them all the time off and they just mentally check out. We do not want that."

Cricket Australia (CA) has opened the door to private investment in the Big Bash League (BBL), with the Melbourne Renegades set to become the first franchise offered for sale from the 2027-28 season.
The decision comes after months of discussions between Cricket Australia and Australia's state cricket ***** ociations over the future of the domestic T20 competition.
At a press conference at the SCG on Tuesday afternoon, CA confirmed that the Renegades will be the first BBL franchise to enter the private ownership process. Other BBL and WBBL teams could also be offered for sale in the future under a "self-determination" model.
The governing body said the move is aimed at bringing private investment into the T20 competition and strengthening the financial position of Australian cricket as players and teams are increasingly being drawn towards lucrative leagues around the world.
"CA will invite bids from private owners for the Renegades with a view to them playing the 2027-28 season under new ownership," the governing body said in a statement on Tuesday.
"Beginning the sales process for the Renegades allows us to take the first step in a self-determination model for our members and represents a defining moment for the game," said Cricket Australia chair Mike Baird.
"This is a significant decision that has involved an enormous amount of ***** ysis, discussion and collaboration over many months."
CA said other franchises could be put on the market at a later stage.
"Pending the result of that process, CA will consider taking other clubs to market under a self-determination model that gives each state member the ability to ***** s the optimal pathway for its own club and community."
According to cricket.com.au, Hobart Hurricanes, Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars are among the other clubs believed to be interested in private investment.
The Renegades are owned by Cricket Victoria, which supported CA's original plan. They won the BBL ***** le in the 2018-19 season.
The move comes as CA looks to strengthen its finances. Despite a boost in revenue from hosting a five-Test series against India, the game's biggest financial market, CA reported a net deficit of A$11.3 million for the 2024-25 financial year.
"By opening the door to private investment in the Big Bash Leagues, Cricket Australia is taking a deliberate step to strengthen and secure the long-term future of the game," CA Chairman Mike Baird said in Tuesday's statement.
Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced in July that December's BBL 2026-27 season opener between the Renegades and Perth Scorchers would take place in the Chennai.
While CA is allowing private ownership, it will continue to control key areas of the competition. Baird said the governing body will retain control over international scheduling, player availability, salary caps and media rights.

Nebraska and Missouri tried to play a volleyball match at Wrigley Field on Sunday night in what seemed like a fun, unique battle for the two programs as part of the Big Ten-SEC Volleyball Challenge.
It was just way, way too hot and humid in Chicago for the game to work.
The Big Ten suspended the match after a long delay on Sunday night, ending the contest early in front of a sold-out crowd at Wrigley Field. It's unclear when the match will be played between the two schools, if it is at all.
"Due to weather conditions affecting the court surface, Sunday's volleyball match between Nebraska and Missouri has been suspended," the Big Ten said in a statement. "Despite best efforts and in collaboration with all parties, rescheduling at Wrigley Field is not possible. A decision on match continuation at the point of suspension will be announced at a later date."
The court, which was built in the outfield of the Chicago Cubs' iconic stadium, was incredibly slippery throughout the match. Just three points into the opening set, everybody stopped, grabbed a towel and started wiping the floor, players included.

A little bit of personal story-time to start this week's Sinners & Saints. Yesterday was the first Roma match that my girlfriend watched all the way through in a serious way. She's a fan of football in general, but follows the NWSL most closely. Thanks to my work with Chiesa di Totti, she knows what's going on in a general way with Roma most of the time, and we've both been thinking for a while that it would be great for us to watch Roma together this season. Her main experience with seeing me follow Roma has been witnessing my frustration: she knows Roma is generally a club with talented players that fail to meet expectations, a club always just on the outside looking in.
Because of some scheduling issues for the first two matches, yesterday was her first time watching a match this season in full (whereas previous seasons, she didn't want to watch because it was "kind of depressing." Fair enough.). 45 minutes in, she was impressed albeit deeply frustrated with Roma's inability to get the ball past Marco Carnesecchi. 85 minutes in, I thought I was introducing her to the apotheosis of what happens when Roma Happens; when no amount of combined talent, no amount of good form, no amount of opportunities on goal seems to be capable of defeating the destiny of Roma to be just one tier below the best of Italian and European football, for eternity.
Then, of course, came the six minutes where Roma turned a 0-1 loss into a 2-1 win. I was on the edge of my seat (literally, my Uber nearly got into an accident) when Matías Soulé scored his stoppage time goal to preserve Roma's perfect record and keep the hopes of something greater for this season alive. I'm still feeling shocked and thrilled that the Giallorossi pulled this one off, and what a game to use to truly introduce my girlfriend to Roma. Roma did concede, and Roma did look as if they were going to lose this one for most of the second half; given that, I had to anoint at least one player a sinner. But make no mistake: this match felt more exciting to me than either of the multi-goal clean sheets that started the season, and in my book is a far better signal for just how high this Roma can go than either the win against Lecce or Fiorentina.
One quick aside before diving into the sinners and saints: my love for Mile Svilar knows no bounds, but if yesterday's match taught me just about anything regarding a non-Roma player, it's that I want Marco Carnesecchi to be Italy's goalkeeper moving forward. What an incredible performance; this one could have and should have been a 5-1 rout, if not for his 9 saves.
He got the game-winner in stoppage time, so he has to be the first saint on the list. MatìGol (can we start calling him that?) put in an excellent shift as a substitute, garnering himself an 8.7 rating from SofaScore after coming on for Rodrigo Mora in the 54th minute and practically willing the Giallorossi to the win. The Argentine attacker had seven total shots, three of which were on target; while

NextEra Energy says an artificial intelligence (AI)–driven dispatch and outage-scheduling tool has saved its customers more than $20 million so far this year. Santee Cooper expects a custom AI weather-forecasting model to help it avoid spot-market purchases that can cost $100,000 an hour during extreme weather. Both utilities say the tools moved from concept to production in a matter of weeks, not years.The two companies detailed their AI deployments during a Sept. 2 virtual media roundtable hosted by Google Cloud, alongside Raiford Smith, the company's global director of power and energy industry. The session focused on Gemini Enterprise, Google Cloud's platform for building and deploying AI agents, and framed both utilities as evidence that AI in the sector has moved beyond generic chatbots and into tools built for specific, high-stakes operational decisions."Utilities are being asked to deliver greater reliability, lower costs, and a grid ready for what comes next," said Rich Argentieri, president of NextEra ***** ytics. The Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers will meet at the famed Melbourne Cricket Ground next week in what the NFL intends to be the first of many regular-season games in front of its growing Australian fan base.

One of the strangest scheduling anomalies in all of sports is about to have its swan song this weekend in college football's befuddling and charming Week 0.
The fact that a Week 0 even exists is quintessential college football in that it couldn't really exist anywhere else and make any sense at all. However, it has been alive for years, allowing a select handful of teams an opportunity to begin the regular season a week before everybody else. The weekend is open to anyone playing an international game (TCU-UNC in Dublin, Ireland) and anyone playing an away game at Hawaii to compensate for their extra travel. The NCAA can also provide a waiver for games, although that is rare. This season, it was given to NC State and Virginia as they were originally scheduled to play their season opener in Brazil before it was moved back stateside.
However, 2026 will be the last year that the sport enjoys an appetizer before the regular season truly kicks off in full. The FBS Oversight Committee approved legislation on Friday that will move the calendar up one week so that all teams begin during the week that has served as Week 0.
"Earlier this year, the FBS Calendar Subgroup presented recommendations to the committee to amend the regular season and the off-campus recruiting model," the NCAA briefing said. "In response to those recommendations, a new FBS first-contest date has been adopted and will take effect in the 2027 season. The season will begin on the Thursday of what is now designated Week 0 and end on the Saturday after Thanksgiving."
This year's Week 0 consists of eight games. And while none of them are true barnburners, it's a nice, gentle way to start the regular season. And with American fans starved for any kind of football that matters, we will gladly sit down and watch New Mexico State travel to Florida State in primetime.

The New York Jets have concluded the preseason portion of their 2026 NFL scheduling, having lost to the New York Giants in a 23-6 final on Friday at MetLife Stadium.
Not every team has finished their exhibition season. Week 3 of the preseason rolls on throughout the weekend but all 32 teams in the NFL have their eye now on 6 p.m. on Sunday. That is when every team needs to be down to 53 players, one way or another.
En route to Sunday there will be many roster cuts, but there could be other injury designations, trades, and other transactions that unfold for the Bills to ultimately get head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey's roster down to 53 men.

NEW DELHI: South Africa all-rounder Marizanne Kapp has strongly criticised Cricket Australia's decision to offer transgender cricketer Anaya Bangar a pathway back into competitive women's cricket, calling the development "absolutely ridiculous" and saying it "should not be allowed".
Kapp's reaction came after Australian media reported that Cricket Australia (CA) had cleared Anaya, the daughter of former India cricketer and coach Sanjay Bangar, to return to competitive cricket under its Inclusion of Transgender and Gender Diverse Players in Elite Cricket Policy. The decision has since become a major talking point in the cricketing world.
Sharing a report on her Instagram, Kapp wrote: "Absolutely ridiculous. This should not be allowed."
Anaya underwent gender-affirming surgery in March this year and has now been given a pathway towards elite women's cricket in Australia. Under CA's decision, she can play community cricket in any state or territory of Australia until March 2027.
From March 2027, Anaya can become eligible for elite-level women's cricket if she continues to meet the policy requirements, including the stipulated testosterone threshold.
An expert panel comprising CA's Head of Integrity Jacqui Partridge, Integrity Partner and Legal representative Emily Yates, Head of Scheduling, Operations and Domestic Cricket Peter Roach, Anti-Doping Medical Officer Dr Peter Harcourt and Team Doctor Dr Pip Inge considered Anaya's case before confirming the pathway.
"Under Cricket Australia's Policy, a player seeking to participate in the female category of Elite Cricket must establish that their serum testosterone concentration has been below 10 nmol/L continuously for a period of no less than 12 months," CA said in an email to Anaya.
The governing body added that, based on the medical information submitted, the requirement would be satisfied in March 2027. Her eligibility from that point will remain conditional on a blood test confirming that her testosterone level remains below 10 nmol/L and that she continues to meet the policy's requirements.
Anaya said the process was neither "automatic or informal" and that CA had considered her medical and surgical history, hormone and testosterone levels, cricketing background, playing footage and scientific and athletic performance work conducted with Manchester Metropolitan University's Institute of Sport.
She also revealed that her most recent blood test in July recorded total testosterone at 0.6 nanomoles, which she said was within the female reference range reported by the laboratory.
For Anaya, however, the CA decision represents an opportunity rather than a guarantee of a place in elite cricket.
"I want to make another point very clearly. Eligibility is not selection. Cricket Australia has given me a pathway, which does not mean that I have been given a place in a team. I still have to train, compete, perform and earn that opportunity," she said.

The Saints on Thursday announced a nonleague schedule that includes guarantee games at Dayton of the Atlantic 10 on Nov. 10 and Big East members St. John's on Nov. 18 and Seton Hall on Nov. 28.
"Love it," Smith said. "We've got monster games on it. We have no bad teams. Our strength of schedule's going to be high. The three buy games are awesome for us."
With Thursday's announcement, Siena completed its 32-game 2026-27 schedule. The Metro Conference announced the 20-game league schedule earlier this month. The NCAA approved an increase from 31 to 32 regular-season games for the upcoming season.

The Houston Astros enter Wednesday with a slim lead in the American League West, but with the Texas Rangers just a half-game back and the Seattle Mariners hanging around at 2 ½ out, there's still plenty to be decided.
With just 30 games remaining for the Astros, now would be the time to start comparing schedules between the three contenders, a definition they technically meet even if none of them entered the day with a winning record. Yet, considering the Astros just went 2-4 at home against the Angels and Athletics, the two worst teams in the American League, then won at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, perhaps the opponent doesn't actually matter.
Still, neither the Astros or Ranger have much of a scheduling advantage over each other. The Rangers, who have 29 games left, have the 10th-hardest schedule remaining, with its remaining opponents combining for a .511 winning percentage. The Astros have the 13th-hardest schedule with a combined .506 winning percentage for their remaining opponents.
Where strength of schedule could come into play though is the Mariners. They have the easiest schedule left, especially in the final month, when 17 of their final 22 games are against the Angels, Athletics and Rockies, the three worst teams in baseball.
If the race comes down to the final week, the Astros play what could be a pivotal two-game series in Seattle before finishing with four games in Sacramento against the Athletics. I asked myself a really tough question on Sunday. What am I looking forward to more, the start of the Notre Dame football season or the end of the Notre Dame football offseason? A philosophy major out there will probably tell me that the two can't be separated, but of course they can.
We don't need to debate that question, but I'm positive we can all agree that we are ready for the Notre Dame offseason to be over.
Even though all offseasons can kind of suck for one reason or another, this offseason in particular has been somewhat torturous. It has been almost 9 months since the Irish last played a football game, and EVERYTHING has run its course. Usually I bask in the fun of the offseason, but maybe the podcast hiatus took more joy out of that time of year than usual.
Notre Dame being left out of the playoff was rough enough, but watching Indiana and Miami play for the national championship was an incredibly jagged pill to swallow.

Not long ago, the idea of playing an NFL game on a Wednesday seemed completely foreign. Now, Wednesday has become an increasingly important day of the week on the NFL calendar.
The upcoming season will feature two Wednesday contests: A Super Bowl rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on NBC opening night, and a new "Thanksgiving Eve" game between the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams on Netflix the day before Thanksgiving. Just a couple years ago, the NFL made some unprecedented scheduling tweaks to ensure it could air two games on Christmas Day, which fell on a Wednesday, when only a year prior the league suggested it wouldn't utilize the holiday if it fell on Wednesday.
The willingness to schedule games on days of the week that it had not previously considered viable is part and parcel with the league's ambition to add more standalone window national games. But don't expect the league to roll out a weekly "Wednesday Night Football" package anytime soon.
When asked about the NFL's utilization of Wednesday during a conference call this week, the league's top media executive Hans Schroeder indicated Wednesday will still be used sparingly.
"I don't know if we're looking at Wednesday night football as a night for regularly scheduled NFL game," Schroeder said. "I do think if you look at the growth of Thanksgiving specifically, and that holiday, and how core football, and food, and family, and bringing all that together, that the growth of Thanksgiving over the last handful of years has just been tremendous."

The Cincinnati Bengals have gone from Zac Taylor saying they won't do a joint practice to scheduling a pretty important one for Thursday with the Chicago Bears.
A live practice against another team, after all, is a good time to let loose with the starters in a way they might not during a preseason game.
Hence, Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com noted that Bengals starters are expected to play about 40 snaps during Thursday practice, but are unlikely to suit up for Saturday's game.
Fair balance, really. Both head coaches can keep a tight leash on what happens during the practice session featuring starters. They can then test the depth of the roster and evaluate the final 53 as backups get live reps in game action.
Overall, it's an uptick in action for Bengals starters before they might see some work in the third and final preseason game, too. It's all, at least partially, in the name of reducing the chances of yet another slow start for the offense.

The Arizona Cardinals will have a joint practice with the Green Bay Packers next week, their only joint practice of the preseason. If head coach Mike LaFleur had his way, they would have more.
"I would love to do two joint practices," he told reporters on Tuesday. "I'd love to do three joint practices."
For him, "you get two joint practices in, that's the equivalent of playing the two preseason (games), because it is a heightened, amped up environment. You're not tackling, but it's just, it's the amped up environment that you get."
Additionally, "for some reason, the data says if you end up having those joint practices, you have a lower injury risk going into the first four weeks of the season."
So why didn't the Cardinals have more joint practices this year? It wasn't for a lack of trying. LaFleur tried scheduling them right after he was hired in February. He found out "a lot of those coaches that were already hired already had their joint practices."

"I make it simple and fast. My team is trained to communicate this way. If I need to write something longer, I dictate my response while walking through the office."

Rather than scheduling recurring one-on-one meetings, the leader of the $256 billion German engineering company—No. 143 on the Fortune Global 500—keeps his door open and lets his executives come to him when they need to.

For the first time in decades, Memphis football is not scheduled to face a power conference opponent in 2026.
Other than 2020, when a matchup against Purdue was canceled, Memphis has played a power conference opponent in every season going back to at least 1960. That won't be the case in 2026, when the Tigers will face Boise State, UNLV, Arkansas State and UT-Martin in non-conference play.
Memphis won't play a power conference opponent in 2027, either.
"If we can get P4s to play us, we'll play them," athletic director Ed Scott said on "The Gary Parrish Show" on Aug. 18. "If I was the athletic director at certain P4s, especially in the geographic area we live in, I would not play Memphis. It's not a win-win for them like it is for us."
Football scheduling is done years and sometimes decades in advance, so Scott hasn't had much control over Memphis' future schedules. The SEC's move to nine conference games also creates a hurdle for Memphis, and it's the reason Arkansas moved a planned 2026 game to 2030.
