India appeared to have wrested control of the second Test against Sri Lanka after a late burst of wickets, but rain could yet play a major role in determining the outcome of the Test and, in turn, India's WTC campaign.
Sri Lanka were 218 for 6 in their second innings when play was called off early, with Sonal Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha unbeaten at the crease. The hosts had earlier mounted a spirited fightback through Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis, raising the prospect of a draw if further rain disrupts the final day.
Such an outcome could hurt India's chances of making the WTC final.
India are currently fifth in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 53.33. A victory over Sri Lanka would lift Shubman Gill's side to fourth place following Bangladesh's heavy defeat to Australia. A draw, however, would leave India in fifth place with their PCT slipping to 51.52.
The bigger concern is the shrinking margin for error in the remainder of the cycle.
India will have seven Tests left after this match, including a two-Test tour of New Zealand in November before a five-Test home series against Australia next year. Having already lost four of their 10 Tests in the current cycle, India can ill afford many more setbacks.
If India win seven of their remaining eight Tests, including this match, they can finish with a PCT of 68.52. But six wins and two defeats would leave them at 62.96, a figure that may not be enough based on recent qualification trends.
Three of the four teams to reach the WTC final across the last two cycles had a PCT of more than 65, with India's 58.8 in the 2023 cycle the lone exception. Both finalists in 2025 finished above 67.
The calculations also ******* ume India do not lose any points through over-rate penalties.
For now, India remain well placed in the Test after Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain struck regularly in the final session. But with Sri Lanka still fighting and rain already interrupting play, a result remains crucial not just for the series but for India's increasingly tight road to the WTC final.

I have a confession to make. This whole season, I have been waiting for the other proverbial shoe to drop for Eduardo Rodriguez. I had a difficult time believing the same pitcher who had posted consecutive seasons with ERAs north of five could somehow transform himself into a legitimate Cy Young candidate. There were some legitimate reasons for that doubt too between his whiff percentage, strikeout rate, and chase rate all leave something to be desired – to say nothing of expected stats that paint an even worse picture. But at some point, you have to throw out all the other pieces of evidence and recognize that however he's doing it, Rodriguez is putting together one of the best pitching seasons in franchise history. And at a time in the season where every win is crucial, he delivered once more with an absolute gem against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday afternoon. In seven innings of scoreless work, Rodriguez racked up nine strikeouts and allowed just five baserunners all game, inducing a whopping 18 swings and misses along the way.
It was a fairly dominant performance for the veteran lefty, but it wasn't all smooth sailing. In the visiting half of the sixth, Pete Crow-Armstrong, who was mostly contained in the series, stroked a leadoff double down the line and then moved over to third on Seiya Suzuki's groundout. After a shallow flyout from Alex Bregman wasn't deep enough for PCA to score, he decided to take matters into his own hands and bluffed a straight steal of home by sprinting halfway down the third base line. That move unsettled Rodriguez enough for him to shuffle off the pitching rubber before delivering to James McCann behind the plate. The entire Cubs dugout clamored for a balk call, but after a quick umpire consultation, it was declared not a balk – much to PCA's chagrin as he charged directly at the third base umpire and had to be held back by his coaches. After a few replays of the incident, I do think (as does Bob Brenly) that it probably was a balk. E-Rod clearly takes his left foot off the rubber before coming home with the ball, which would be very deceiving to a baserunner and which has always been the intent behind the balk rule. The play also highlighted the fact that every play should be reviewable as other angles show enough that the Cubs at least had an argument and when the margin is so thin, the call should be correct. It's worth watching the whole sequence for yourself to see where you fall on the decision:

Dolly Parton, the songwriter and singer from Locust Ridge, Tennessee, died Tuesday, Aug. 25. Her death sparked a tsunami of support and reflection from the media, her family and friends, colleagues, and her fans.
When someone lives a life as loudly and publicly as Parton did for 80 years, it's of little surprise that that person will be written about for days, weeks, and years to come after their death. But one article about Parton from The Washington Post is getting a lot of attention — and it's because its author missed a crucial detail of the singer's life.
"Dolly Parton's lack of children demonstrated that the world could in fact love a woman who wasn't a mother," the Post wrote on X — a statement that's already fairly outrageous. The message continued, "But more importantly, she was proof that a person could be an advocate for children while personally choosing against parenting."
In her column, Ashley Fetters Maloy wrote that she loves Parton "for the same reasons everyone loves Dolly Parton." For Maloy, that list includes that her "songs are undeniably powerful, her joy infectious, her hair magnificent" and her "quietly subversive jokes about her ***** and her fashion sense will never not be funny, or poignant."

A leisure centre's future is causing concern among sports clubs, with netball and squash representatives warning that any loss of facilities could have a major impact.
Guernsey's Beau Sejour leisure centre is in a "persistent operating deficit" and a "solution has not been defined", a sustainability report said.
Naomi Szmierek, of the Guernsey Netball ****** ociation, said netball was already struggling with a lack of court ****** e and said the sport was not meeting demand across junior, community and island programmes.

The left-hander followed his scores of 100 and 84 in Galle with an unbeaten 85 (137b, 2x6) to lead a gritty fightback on a rain-hit third day of the second Test at SSC on Tuesday.
Dinusha found an able ally in fellow youngster Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who struck 80 (133b, 9x4) in only his second Test innings, as Sri Lanka frustrated India for large parts of the day before ending on 265 for eight. The Orioles kicked off a crucial nine-game road trip with a blowout 13-1 win over the hosting Cardinals on Tuesday night. Pete Alonso paced the lineup before he left the game with a flare up of his calf injury. O's starter Chris Bassitt turned in a solid 6.2 innings before Anthony Nunez over-powered the opposing hitters in the late innings.
This was the Orioles most dominant win of the season by run differential, besting a 12-1 win over the Dodgers on June 21. It also tied their season high in runs scored, which they originally achieved back on June 5 in a 13-3 victory against the Blue Jays.
The Orioles scored all of those runs between the third and sixth innings of this game. Power got things started, and then the rest of the lineup just peppered the ball all over the park for the remainder of the runs.

The wins keep on rolling: tonight, the Kansas City Royals walked into the home of the Toronto Blue Jays and won 5-3 with a wild ninth inning that featured a pair of crucial defensive masterpieces.
In the first inning, both the Royals and Jays traded blows. Carter Jensen immediately singled against Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer; he was immediately followed by Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino walks to load the bases. Salvador Perez hit into a double play, an unfortunate result that at least scored Jensen. Fortunately for Kansas City, Toronto also loaded the bases in the first inning and also only scored one (a sacrifice fly from Jesús Sánchez).

NORMAN — Oklahoma announced its team captains ahead of the 2026 season.
Safety Peyton Bowen, defensive linemen David Stone and Taylor Wein, linebackers Owen Heinecke and Kip Lewis, quarterback John Mateer and offensive linemen Michael Fasusi, Jake Maikkula and Eddy Pierre-Louis were named the Sooners' season captains Tuesday.
Entering his second season at OU, Mateer has cemented himself as even more of a leader and is out to prove he's gotten better. He's fresh off an up and down season in which he broke his thumb and threw for 2,885 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
On defense, Bowen, Heinecke, Lewis, Stone and Wein are crucial veterans who opted to return. Bowen and Wein were each members of the All-SEC Second Team last season.
Fasusi, Maikkula and Pierre-Louis are three out of the four offensive linemen with starting experience with the Sooners on an offensive line that is expected to be improved. Maikkula will miss time with a "short-term" injury and isn't expected to play in the opener.

NORMAN — Oklahoma announced its team captains ahead of the 2026 season.
Safety Peyton Bowen, defensive linemen David Stone and Taylor Wein, linebackers Owen Heinecke and Kip Lewis, quarterback John Mateer and offensive linemen Michael Fasusi, Jake Maikkula and Eddy Pierre-Louis were named the Sooners' season captains Tuesday.
Entering his second season at OU, Mateer has cemented himself as even more of a leader and is out to prove he's gotten better. He's fresh off an up and down season in which he broke his thumb and threw for 2,885 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
On defense, Bowen, Heinecke, Lewis, Stone and Wein are crucial veterans who opted to return. Bowen and Wein were each members of the All-SEC Second Team last season.
Fasusi, Maikkula and Pierre-Louis are three out of the four offensive linemen with starting experience with the Sooners on an offensive line that is expected to be improved. Maikkula will miss time with a "short-term" injury and isn't expected to play in the opener.

Artificial intelligence can help shave off hours of time when it comes to previously manual tasks, such as scenario planning or financial modeling. But as finance employees begin to rely more heavily on AI, it's crucial for finance employees to understand its inner workings — meaning "the CFO needs to have a whole set of processes in place around governance and ethics" when it comes to AI, according to Ian Schnoor, executive director of the Financial Modeling Institute.
The FMI offers a global program for financial modeling accreditation, a discipline where AI is becoming more entrenched. At the moment, many companies are still in the early days of adopting the technology, and "do not have strong disclosures or guidelines yet around AI," Schnoor told CFO Dive. "But if I was a CFO, I would want a policy to know exactly, how was AI used in this process?"
Schnoor, who began his career as an investment banker at Citibank, has served as executive director for the Toronto, Canda-based institute since 2016, according to his LinkedIn profile.
He also serves as an adjunct professor for the Smith School of Business at Queen's University in Toronto, Canada. Before FMI, he served as founder and president for the Marquee Group, a financial modeling training provider he sold to Training the Street in March of 2023.

After months of rumours and gossip, the Bradley Barcola to Liverpool saga could be coming to an end soon.
The Reds initially made a move for the 23-year-old last summer, but instead focused on the move for £125m signing Alexander Isak.

It was one of the riskiest singles Dhruv Jurel would have taken in his Test career. Anxious to complete his second Test century — and first overseas hundred — after being stranded on 99 for 12 ******* and made to wait by rain while on 95, Jurel punched the ball towards mid-off and sprinted for a single that just wasn't on.
The ball travelled quickly to the fielder after bouncing. But luck smiled on the 25-year-old batter. The fielder missed the direct hit and Jurel dived to complete the run and his century, which came off 171 ******* and had the entire Indian dressing room applauding as they shared the tension. Mohammed Siraj celebrated wildly, giving Jurel a bear hug.
Powered by Jurel's composed and flawless unbeaten 115 off 177 ******* , with nine fours and two sixes, and Rishabh Pant's entertaining 63 off 89 ******* , with six fours and two sixes, India declared at 503 for nine. Then, they reduced Sri Lanka to 8/2 on Day Two of the second and final Test in Colombo on Monday.
The hosts were clearly unhappy about being asked to bat in fading light. Yashasvi Jaiswal pulled off a brilliant diving catch at gully to send back Lahiru Udara for one off Prasidh Krishna in the second over.

NEW DELHI: Rishabh Pant continued his remarkable rise through India's Test record books on Monday, surpassing captain Shubman Gill to become the country's highest run-scorer in ICC World Test Championship history. Pant was unbeaten on 63 at lunch on the second day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo as India reached 419/6.
Pant now has 2,948 runs from 42 Tests in the World Test Championship, moving ahead of Gill's 2,917 from the same number of matches. Rohit Sharma is third among Indian batters with 2,716 runs from 40 Tests, followed by Ravindra Jadeja (2,675 from 50) and Virat Kohli (2,617 from 46). Among current Indian players, Yashasvi Jaiswal is next with 2,588 runs from 30 Tests.

Liverpool 'remain hopeful' of signing at least one winger in the final few days of the summer transfer window, according to a prominent Reds journalist.
The Merseyside giants have reportedly agreed personal terms with Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola but have yet to settle a fee with the European champions, who could want as much as £145m for the player after add-ons (CaughtOffside).
Andoni Iraola's side are also pursing a move for Yankuba Minteh, for whom Brighton have already rejected two bids, the most recent of which amounted to £60m (Sky Sports).

Starting from the former, Cramer has discussed the firm several times over the past couple of months. He has focused on the firm's ongoing turnaround efforts and shifted his opinion. Throughout 2025, Cramer cited faith in NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE)'s CEO and the turnaround, but earlier this year shifted his opinion. As for On Holding (NYSE:ONON), the CNBC TV host decided to "pass" on the shares in May. On August 17th, he shared his take on why he changed mind on NKE and commented on ONON's management change:
"I was shocked at Tapestry, I went to see them earlier, we had a great interview about it. On, no. I think that we are fundamentally saying, alright, sneakers, just not a great business. I talked about my problems with Nike in my Club meeting on Thursday. Well I like to start with the most stupid things that I do. That way I get it through. Like why, people are going to say, hey why doesn't Cramer talk about the dumbest thing he did? Well I put it right at the top! . . .But I think that Nike is, there are a lot of people that I got pushed back on Nike, people say, Nike's too cheap, you shouldn't have given up on it. Yet, while NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE) might be addressing its structural issues and managing its costs, the firm is struggling with growth in emerging markets due to inflation. Additionally, a large portion of the margin improvement came courtesy of tariff recovery while its Converse brand and the digital business continue to struggle. As a result, tailwinds in the shares depend on whether the firm will be able to manage inventories, costs and shelf market share.

When the Manchester City starting lineup was announced prior to City's 2-1 win over Bournemouth yesterday, it did appear that Nico O'Reilly, Rico Lewis, and Elliot Anderson would form City's midfield. However, that was not the case. Rico Lewis lined up at right-back, with Ruben Dias, Abdukodir Khusanov and Josko Gvardiol starting in defence. Elliot Anderson, Nico O'Reilly, and Marc Guehi formed Manchester City's midfield. A criticism of Manchester City's play in the four preseason matches they played before yesterday's match was how open their midfield was. By starting Guehi and Anderson together, Enzo Maresca addressed this issue. Guehi put in a strong display in midfield, which fully justified Maresca's decision to play Guehi in City's engine room.

The Kansas City Chiefs were unsuccessful in consecutive weeks trying to end their preseason losing streak with Saturday night's 16-15 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Head coach Andy Reid spoke with reporters after the game about the latest defeat.
"There were some good things tonight. We still have to eliminate some of these penalties at crucial times that take you backward, but a ton of great reps for the young players," said Reid. "Got everybody an opportunity to play. So for the evaluation process, still got the vets some quality time."
The Chiefs haven't won a preseason game since 2023. They are 0-2 in 2026 with one more game on Friday. Reid expressed the importance of winning games even if they don't necessarily count in the regular season.
"Yeah, listen, it's America. Hey, man, you want to win everything you do, and that's how it goes, man. So, to say you don't want to win, these guys want to do that. We just got to eliminate some of these mistakes," said Reid. "But again, you're doing that and trying to evaluate everybody at the same time. So, we're not going to make any excuses. I mean, you go in, and you want to win the game. Guys are competitive. There's a bunch of competitive guys out there."
The Chiefs will finish their preseason schedule back home at Arrowhead Stadium against the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

Mitchell Starc produced another devastating spell in Mackay to finish with a 10-wicket match haul as Australia crushed Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs in the second Test, levelling the two-match series 1-1 inside two days.
Starc returned figures of 10-51, adding four wickets on Sunday to his remarkable 6-12 on the opening day. Bangladesh were bowled out for just 64 in their first innings before Australia also found batting difficult on a spicy pitch at Mackay in northern Queensland.
The victory provided a significant boost for Australia after their surprise defeat in the opening Test in Darwin.
Starc's performance also moved him to 10th on the all-time Test wicket-takers' list. The left-arm quick now has 445 wickets, overtaking South African great Dale Steyn.
It was Starc's fourth 10-wicket haul in Test cricket. Pat **** mins and Nathan Lyon also played key roles with three wickets each as Bangladesh were dismissed for 95 in their second innings.
Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scored with 31, while Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten on 29. The Bangladesh captain and experienced wicketkeeper-batter received little support from the rest of the line-up, with only two other batters reaching double figures.
Australia had resumed their first innings at 165-8 and added 45 runs to their overnight total. Cameron Green and Nathan Lyon initially put on 28 for the ninth wicket before Shoriful Islam ended Green's resistance.
Shoriful produced a searing inswinging yorker that struck Green on the front pad, with the decision confirmed on review. Green departed for 67 from 105 **** , having struck 10 boundaries. It followed his breakthrough home century in the first Test at Darwin.
Shoriful finished with 7-48, the best bowling figures by a Bangladesh player in a Test away from home.
Lyon, unbeaten on 32, and Josh Hazlewood took Australia beyond 200 before Hazlewood fell for six to Taijul Islam. Australia were eventually dismissed for 210, giving them a crucial 146-run first-innings lead.
Bangladesh's second innings quickly became another Starc show.
After getting through his first over, Bangladesh lost Shadman Islam for one in Starc's next over, with Marnus Labuschagne taking the edge. Mominul Haque then shouldered arms to the following delivery, which crashed into his off stump.
Starc returned after lunch to dismiss Litton Das for another duck. The wicketkeeper-batter faced 27 **** across three innings in the series without scoring.
