After a promising start with two wins, RB Leipzig have suffered back-to-back defeats to Werder Bremen and Como, sparking significant criticism in the press and on social media.
RB Leipzig managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer has now shared his thoughts on the situation, acknowledging that the team's recent performances have fallen well below expectations.
"We have, of course, seen what has been said about the club in the press and on social media over the past few days. We are highly ambitious, but we are also critical of ourselves. The last two results have not been good enough. We know that, and we are not going to sugar-coat it. We are addressing the situation very clearly internally," Schäfer said in a statement released by RB Leipzig on Friday night.
Despite the recent setbacks, Schäfer was keen to underline the club's full support for new head coach Martin Demichelis and his squad, stressing that, given the significant changes made at the club over the summer, it's only natural that the team will need time to fully gel.
"At the same time, we are staying calm and focused, and we are united as a club. That applies to everyone who works here, the players and the entire coaching staff. They all have our full support and trust," he said.

Former Bayern Munich great Bastian Schweinsteiger gave the defending champions a kind second round task in the German Cup when he drew them to host second division Magdeburg on Saturday.
It could have been worse for Bayern because all 18 top flight teams had won their first round games for the first time since 2008 to be in the draw pot of the 32 teams.
But while Bayern were spared a Bundesliga opponent, there will be four duels between top flight teams: Borussia Dortmund v Werder Bremen, SV Hamburg v Eintracht Frankfurt, Cologne v Union Berlin and Paderborn v 2025 winners and last season's runners-up VfB Stuttgart.
The only remaining fourth-division team, Jeddeloh II, play second tier Hertha Berlin.
The second-round matches are played October 27 and 28.

The draw for the second round of the 2026/27 DFB-Pokal took place at the German Football Museum in Dortmund on Saturday evening, producing four ties between Bundesliga clubs and an intriguing reunion between defending champions Bayern Munich and 1. FC Magdeburg.
Bayern will host Magdeburg in a repeat of one of the more memorable cup shocks of the modern era. Then-2. Bundesliga side Magdeburg eliminated the record champions on penalties in the second round of the 2000/01 competition. This time, however, the underdogs will have to attempt another upset at the Allianz Arena.
Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund host Werder Bremen while 1. FC Cologne welcome Union Berlin. Hamburger SV face Eintracht Frankfurt at the Volksparkstadion and Bundesliga newcomers SC Paderborn host VfB Stuttgart in the remaining top-flight encounter.
Three sides from below Germany's top two divisions remain in the competition. Regionalliga outfit SSV Jeddeloh II, who stunned relegated Bundesliga club Heidenheim 5-2 in the opening round, were rewarded with a home tie against Hertha BSC. Rot-Weiss Essen host RB Leipzig while SG Sonnenhof Großaspach welcome FC Augsburg.
The second-round fixtures will be played on October 27 and 28. Exact kickoff times will be confirmed at a later date.

SV Werder Bremen have announced the signing of Youri Regeer who joins on a one-year loan from Ajax Amsterdam.
The Bundesliga club from the north of Germany have also secured an option to buy the 23-year-old for €5million next summer.
Regeer can play both in central midfield and as a right-back, adding necessary cover after the injury sustained by Jens Stage.
Arthur from Bayer Leverkusen is also expected to join Bremen, which will offer more competition at right-back.
Regeer has already made eight competitive appearances for Ajax this season – starting all eight from the first whistle.

Bayern Munich fans turned out to be quite a handful according to a recent ******* ysis on Reddit. German sports betting portal Wettfreunde scoured Bundesliga subreddits to evaluate fan behavior. The Bavarian faithful finished second behind rivals Borussia Dortmund in profanity. On the flip side, Paderborn's fans were both the best-behaved and the most positive.
Some important snaps from are presented below (captured via iMiaSanMia):
– wettfreunde ******* yzed over 130,000 comments from Bundesliga subreddits between August 2025 and August 2026 to determine the most negative, positive, vulgar and polite fan bases over there.

9.89% of comments made by Bayern fans contained swear words (in English and German),… pic.twitter.com/g8DP5IpXoZ
Over 130,000 comments between August 2025 and August of 2026 were ******* yzed from subreddits to ******* s for vulgarity, politeness, negativity and positivity. And, the results are interesting for Bayern. Despite ranking second with nearly 10 percent of the comments containing swear words in German and English, it was negativity that took center-stage. The ******* ysis revealed a sheer lack in optimism among Bayern's fans with over 54 percent of the comments being negative in nature. Only Werder Bremen's supporters beat the Bavarians in this regard by a slim margin of 0.8 percent.
Let us cut to the chase here. Bayern has two major traumas in recent history. The first being injuries tanking the squad's ability in the business end of the season. Second being a run of premature exits from the Champions League. The number of times that Bayern has been the better side only to get shipped off due to missed chances, abysmal officiating or just poor luck has left its mark on the fans. The absence of Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies due to major injuries, Thomas Müller leaving the club and a thin squad at the start of last season did not leave much room for positivity to start with.

Werder Bremen have set their sights on Bayern Munich youngster Arijon Ibrahimović as they look to add another attacking option to their squad.
According to DeichStube, Werder have already contacted Bayern to discuss a potential loan move for the 20-year-old. The interest has also been confirmed by Sky, with initial talks between the two clubs having taken place.
However, there is one major obstacle: Werder would first need to offload an attacking player before they could make room for Ibrahimović. Until then, the move is unlikely to progress beyond the exploratory stage.
Ibrahimović is highly rated in Bremen, with the club having followed his development during his loan spell at Heidenheim last season. The versatile attacker can operate on the wing as well as in central midfield and could provide additional options for head coach Daniel Thioune.
For Bayern, both a loan and a permanent transfer are currently being considered. The German champions have reportedly become open to letting Ibrahimović leave after initially planning to keep him as part of their first-team squad. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl has also indicated that a sale could be possible if the right opportunity arises.

The Bundesliga is back! On Matchday 1, Freiburg host Werder Bremen in an exciting opening fixture for both sides. Goalkeeper Mio Backhaus (and potentially Eren **** çi as well) will face his former club, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the matchup.
Julian Schuster's side will be looking to improve on last season and push for a return to the European places, with a Europa League spot potentially within reach. Bremen, meanwhile, have one primary objective: survival. After a shaky 2025/26 campaign that saw them finish 15th, Werder will be hoping to take a step forward this season - with Niclas Füllkrug expected to play a key role in their ambitions.
Who will come out on top in this match? With just about an hour to go until kickoff, here are the confirmed lineups for both sides:
SC Freiburg (4-2-3-1): Backhaus - Kübler, Ginter, Lienhart, Makengo - Eggestein, Engelhardt - Beste, Suzuki, Scherhant - Matanović
Werder Bremen (4-3-3): Hein - Schmetgens, Pieper, Friedl, Deman - Chuky, Reis, Lynen - Njinmah, Füllkrug, Grüll

Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl taking to the media to inform Arijon Ibrahimović that he is available to be sold, without ensuring that the player was fully aware of what was going on, is a bad look for the club — and also a legitimate story per Bild.
Sport1 broke the initial story, but now it seems as if the heat between the two sides is real:
Max Eberl's recent statements about Arijon Ibrahimović caused a big lack of understanding on the player's camp. Eberl's sudden willingness to let Ibrahimović go came as a huge surprise to the player. After all, the club extended Ibrahimović's contract this summer, announced in the public press release that he will be permanently included in the first team rotation this season, and the player was promised the role of Luis Díaz backup after a conversation with Vincent Kompany. The fact that the management has already changed their minds has come as a surprise to the player's camp. In addition to that, Eberl's public comments on the matter are especially what bothered Ibrahimović and his entourage.
Naturally, this has led to the emergence of new rumors, including one linking the young attacker to Werder Bremen. However, for that kind of move to go down, Werder Bremen would have to shed some its own roster weight, per Bild (as captured by iMiaSanMia):

Not to everyone's delight, Elversberg are active in the transfer market ahead of their first-ever top-flight season. The smallest town to be represented in Bundesliga is backed by investor Frank Holzer, who is the head of pharmaceutical company Ursapharm, which didn't go well with the traditional ethos of German football.
After missing out on a promotion the previous season with a narrow defeat to Heidenheim in the playoff, Elversberg faced a similar scare in the final month of the 2. Bundesliga campaign. A defeat to eventually relegated Fortuna Düsseldorf made them wait until the final matchday of the season to write history.
The club from a town of 13,000 inhabitants has only made the jump to the second division in 2023. Despite the promising 2024/25 campaign, few predicted them to be around the top once again since their long-serving coach Horst Steffen was poached by Werder Bremen, while top scorers Fisnik Asllani and Muhammed Damar returned to their parent club Hoffenheim.
And, in the middle of the season, 12-goal hero Younes Ebnoutalib joined Eintracht Frankfurt. To their credit, Vincent Wagner's side maintained their momentum after the departure of the Moroccan attacker with David Mokwa proving to be the perfect replacement.
Their form at the Ursapharm-Arena an der Kaiserlinde was a big factor as Hertha and Schalke were the only teams to return home with three points. In the end, Elversberg followed the latter to win automatic promotion to Bundesliga.

RB Leipzig are reportedly closing in on the signing of Christopher Nkunku on loan, but the Frenchman may not be the only attacking player to arrive at the Bundesliga club before the transfer window closes.
According to Leipziger Volkszeitung, Leipzig could also make a move for Nick Woltemade.
The report claims that Woltemade is keen to leave Newcastle in search of more regular playing time and would be open to returning to the Bundesliga, where he has previously played for Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart.
A permanent transfer is considered unlikely for Leipzig, but a loan deal could be a realistic option.
Former Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, who is currently a free agent, is also mentioned by the local outlet as a potential option for Die Roten Bullen.

Newcastle United has focused heavily on youth this summer, with five of the club's first six additions aged 20 or younger as Matthias Jaissle begins reshaping the squad he inherited from Eddie Howe.
Defense, however, remains an area requiring more than just some attention, particularly with no virtual backups at the full-back positions, Dan Burn entering his age-34 season, and Newcastle also dealing with increasing uncertainty surrounding Lewis Hall's future amid Manchester United's interest.
FussballDaten's Ekrem Konur reported on Saturday that Newcastle is among the Premier League clubs closely monitoring Werder Bremen center-back Karim Coulibaly, alongside ****** nal and Manchester United.
"Arsenal, Manchester United, and Newcastle United are closely following the player's development as they seek to rejuvenate their defenses while simultaneously improving their build-up play," Konur reported.
The 19-year-old enjoyed his breakthrough with Werder last season after joining on a free from Hamburg in July 2024, and has subsequently emerged as one of the Bundesliga's most coveted young defenders. Standing 1.91 meters tall, Coulibaly is left-footed and has impressed with his athleticism and ability in possession of the ball.

HLN are reporting that Mario Stroeykens is set to leave Anderlecht and join Werder Bremen. Stroeykens, who was linked in the past to West Ham, has had a tumultuous career so far despite only being 21, with injuries having curtailed his progress. Clearly talented, Stroeykens now gets a chance to rebuild his career in a new environment and a new league in the Bundesliga.
Stroeykens made his Anderlecht debut back in the 2020/2021 season. He had a real breakout season during the 2022/2023 season with five goals in 41 games, before pushing on to get six goals and six **** ists the following season. Stroeykens looked set for a big move, with the likes of West Ham and others interested after five goals and six **** ists during the 2024/2025 season, but injuries limited him to just 30 appearances last season. Striker Niclas Fuellkrug has returned to former side Werder Bremen on a season-long loan from English Championship side West Ham, the German club announced on Tuesday.
The 33-year-old has endured a torrid time in east London since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2024, culminating in West Ham's relegation from the Premier League last term.
Fuellkrug's contract at West Ham runs until 2028 but the Hammers did not **** ign him a squad number this season as they look to bounce back to the Premier League.
Fuellkrug scored three goals in 29 matches during an injury-hit spell at West Ham and spent the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan, where he scored once in 20 matches.
Youth product Fuellkrug boasts a better record at Bremen, scoring 49 goals in 124 matches and he helped the club return to the top flight in 2022.

Eintracht Frankfurt have reportedly decided to enter the market for a new first-choice goalkeeper following their disastrous pre-season finale against Brentford. Kicker reports that SC Freiburg keeper Noah Atubolu has emerged as the club's preferred solution between the sticks. Frankfurt's goalkeeping situation already generated considerable discussion throughout the 2025/26 campaign.
Brazilian keeper Kauã Santos was expected to succeed long-time No.1 Kevin Trapp, but a combination of injuries and costly errors prevented the 23-year-old from establishing himself. Michael Zetterer, signed from Werder Bremen last summer, similarly failed to make a lasting claim to the starting role. Saturday's humiliating 7-0 friendly defeat away at Brentford has evidently prompted a rethink. Santos endured another difficult outing in England and kicker now reports that Eintracht have resolved to bring in a new No.1 before the transfer window closes.
Atubolu is described as Frankfurt's "Wunschlösung" ("preferred solution") for the position. The 24-year-old remains under contract with Freiburg through 2027, but has been expected to depart the Breisgau club since Mio Backhaus arrived as his prospective successor earlier this summer. The Freiburg academy product had previously appeared destined for a move abroad. The Premier League in particular has long been considered Atubolu's preferred destination.
Get German Football News reported last month on Atubolu's potential Premier League options, with Aston Villa and Bournemouth among the clubs linked with the German youth international. FussballTransfers additionally reports that Italian clubs have maintained interest in the keeper. A move to Frankfurt would therefore represent a somewhat surprising opportunity for Atubolu to remain in the Bundesliga.
Any prospective deal remains at a very early stage. Kicker nevertheless suggests that the situation could develop quickly during the coming week as Frankfurt seek to address one of the most obvious weak points exposed by their heavy Brentford defeat. The potential move would also represent a significant statement from Frankfurt. Bringing Atubolu to Hessen would amount to a clear attempt to settle a position that has remained unsettled since Trapp's departure.

Niclas Füllkrug could be on his way back to Werder Bremen. According to Transfermarkt, West Ham United are considering allowing the 33-year-old to leave the club on a free transfer.
Füllkrug joined West Ham from Borussia Dortmund in 2024 for around €27 million, but his spell in England has been disappointing. Injuries repeatedly kept him out, and he scored just three goals for the Hammers. Last season, he was loaned to AC Milan, where he managed only one goal in 20 appearances.
West Ham had been looking for around €5 million for the Germany international, but with no suitable offer arriving, the club could now consider terminating his contract.
That would be a major boost for Werder Bremen. Füllkrug came through Werder's academy and enjoyed the best spell of his career at the club, becoming the Bundesliga's joint top scorer in 2022/23. According to Transfermarkt, Werder are already in contact with the striker and are interested in bringing him back.
A free transfer could make the deal considerably more realistic, although Füllkrug's salary could still prove an obstacle. For the striker, meanwhile, returning to Bremen could offer the perfect opportunity to revive his career.

The She-Wolves confirmed the news via a post on their official club website earlier today.
The 20-year-old returns to her native Germany in a bid to continue to experience regular competitive football. Alber has been a regular in the German top flight over the last five years and she will continue her development at that level of football.
Chelsea signed Alber from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim last summer but she is yet to make an impact for The Blues and spent the second half of last season on loan at Werder Bremen.
On the international stage, Alber has represented Germany at various youth levels up to and including Under-23 level.
After sealing her loan move to VfL Wolfsburg, Alber said "VfL Wolfsburg are a big club in women's football and still have big ambitions, so I didn't have to think twice when the opportunity arose to join VfL on loan. I'm particularly looking forward to working with Stephan Lerch again, having already played under him at Hoffenheim.

Brinkhoff's remains the signature stadium beer and continues its partnership with Borussia Dortmund, which has been in place since 2008. The close connection to the city, the region, and BVB fans will continue to be celebrated through joint campaigns, special editions, and initiatives such as "Brinkhoff's Ballgeflüster."
Guinness is a new addition: For the first time, the iconic Irish stout is entering into a partnership with a German professional club. Starting with the 2026–27 season, Guinness will complement the existing beverage offerings at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, providing fans with additional choices. Due to its unique dispensing technology, specially manufactured Beerjets will be installed and will be ready for use by the third Bundesliga home game against Werder Bremen at the latest.
Brinkhoff's and Guinness are shaping the stadium experience in Dortmund, while Guinness and DAB will also be involved in international activations, allowing fans to look forward to promotions during Champions League away trips, for example. Since 2024, the long-established Dortmund brand has been actively promoted alongside Borussia Dortmund—particularly in international markets—through a range of initiatives, from digital campaigns and special editions to fan events and watch parties.
Carsten Cramer, spokesperson for the BVB Board of Management, explains: "With Brinkhoff's, Guinness, and DAB, we are strategically positioning our beer portfolio for the long term. Brinkhoff's represents our Dortmund roots, Guinness brings additional variety and an internationally recognized brand to SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, and DAB carries our shared Dortmund heritage out into the world. In this way, we combine tradition, an attractive stadium experience, and Borussia Dortmund's international focus into a strong overall concept."

Yesterday, Monday, Gianluca Di Marzio reported that Thijs Dallinga of FC Bologna could be the next striker in line to move to the Bundesliga.
New developments in the negotiations for the 26-year-old have been revealed, linking him with a move to SV Werder Bremen.
However, according to an Italian transfer insider, 1.FC Köln currently has the best chance of securing the player's signature.
The Cathedral City club is reportedly trying to outmuscle their league rivals who are also keen to finalize the deal as quickly as possible.
Dallinga moved from FC Toulouse to Bologna in 2024 for almost €16million, but failed to establish himself in Serie A.

There had been little news surrounding Karim Coulibaly in recent months, but with around three weeks remaining before the transfer deadline, a move for the centre-back could once again be on the cards. According to a report from DeichStube, a transfer this summer is becoming increasingly likely following Coulibaly's change of agent.
It is not out of the question that negotiations could resume soon after months of inactivity, although no concrete offer is currently on the table. While figures of up to €45 million were discussed in the spring, Werder Bremen are now reportedly hoping to receive a transfer fee of around €30 million.
According to DeichStube, Werder are primarily waiting for a potential buyer from England. The proceeds from any sale would then be quickly reinvested in further new signings.

Former Eintracht Frankfurt head coach Dino Toppmöller has defended his defensive record at the Bundesliga club, arguing that the disastrous final months of his tenure created a misleading impression of his work. Toppmöller – currently the head coach of RC Lens – spoke to France's L'Équipe about his previous Bundesliga **** ignment.
Toppmöller pointed out that Frankfurt possessed the Bundesliga's sixth-best defence during his first season and the fifth-best during his second.
His third campaign ended very differently. Frankfurt had conceded a league-high 39 goals through 18 fixtures when Toppmöller's position came under serious threat. The 3–3 draw with Werder Bremen that preceded his dismissal also exposed significant structural weaknesses, as examined in Get German Football News' detailed tactical review.
Toppmöller nevertheless believes important squad-planning decisions contributed to the decline.
"In my first two years in Frankfurt, we had the sixth- and fifth-best defences, respectively," the 45-year-old said. "But in the third season, we had sold our best defender, Willian Pacho [actually sold ahead of the 2024/25 campaign] and didn't replace him, against my advice. On top of that, our starting goalkeeper Kevin Trapp transferred to Paris FC."

Former Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig professional Xaver Schlager – a free agent since July 1st – has officially selected Nottingham Forest as his next station. The Austrian international will be reunited with newly appointed Forest head coach Oliver Glasner, under whom he worked for two seasons at Wolfsburg between 2019 and 2021.
Schlager departs German football having made 150 Bundesliga appearances over the course of the last seven seasons. During that time, he scored seven Bundesliga goals and earned 55 caps for his native country.
Schlager arrived in German football when Wolfsburg signed him from Red Bull Salzburg in the summer of 2019. An ankle injury disrupted the first half of his debut campaign, but the Austrian soon established himself alongside Maximilian Arnold in central midfield. By August 2021, Schlager had already made 70 competitive appearances for die Wölfe and developed into one of the team’s most important midfielders.
His Wolfsburg rise was interrupted by a cruciate ligament rupture suffered against Leipzig early in the 2021/22 season. Schlager underwent surgery and remained sidelined until February 2022. He nevertheless returned strongly enough to earn a move to Leipzig, who paid approximately €12m for him that summer.
Schlager quickly became an important part of Marco Rose’s Leipzig midfield. He scored the winner against Werder Bremen in November 2022 as the German Red Bulls extended their unbeaten run across all competitions to 13 matches. His energetic pressing, physicality and willingness to contest virtually every midfield duel made him well suited to Rose’s football.

Derby County have signed Filip Bilbija on a three-year deal after the attacking midfielder left Paderborn following their promotion to the German Bundesliga.
The 26-year-old played a crucial role in returning Paderborn to the top flight, scoring the equaliser in the second leg of their play-off decider against Wolfsburg which was eventually won in extra time.
Bilbija scored 17 goals across all competitions last season, in what was the most prolific showing on his career to date after netting nine goals in each of his previous two campaigns.
The German forward, who came through at Ingolstadt and spent a season with Hamburg SV before joining Paderborn in the summer of 2023, had been linked with a move to Werder Bremen when his contract was running down last season.
Bilbija has already joined up with his new Rams team-mates on their pre-season camp in Austria.

The 28-year-old is under contract with Leeds United, but is already in Austria and trained individually at the training camp on Tuesday.
Today he successfully completed his medical examination and is expected to sign a performance-based contract.
Wöber played on loan at Werder Bremen last season, but only made four appearances due ongoing injuries curtailing his involvement.
Werder therefore did not exercise their €4million purchase option. Prior to that he played on loan for Borussia Mönchengladbach.
