One day after somewhat surprisingly leaving him off their initial 53-man roster, the New York Giants are signing veteran wide receiver/return man Braxton Berrios to their practice squad.
With Calvin Austin having suffered a season-ending torn ACL, Berrios figures to be the primary punt returner and part of the primary kickoff return duo with Deonte Banks. Teams can elevate players from the practice squad three times before having to add them to their 53-man rosters, and the Giants figure to do that with Berrios.
The Giants cut the 30-year-old Berrios on Sunday, enabling them to keep second-year tight end Thomas Fidone rather than exposing him to waivers in an effort to get him to the practice squad.
Entering his eighth season, Berrios has averaged 11.3 yards on 100 career punt returns, 24.9 yards on 91 kickoff returns, and has 140 career pass receptions.

The Giants released Braxton Berrios on Sunday, but there was word that the team planned to have the veteran wide receiver and kick returner back in the fold ahead of Week 1.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the avenue for Berrios's return will be via the practice squad. As Berrios is a vested veteran and did not have to go through waivers, a signing can take place right away.
Berrios signed with the team after Gunner Olszewski tore his Achilles this spring and he can be elevated to fill a returner role for the Giants when they face the Cowboys in the opening week of the regular season.
Berrios was an All-Pro returner for the Jets in 2021 and has career averages of 11.2 yards per punt return and 24.9 yards per kickoff return.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Let's review the New York Giants' preseason-opening 13-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings as only we can, with our unique 'Kudos & Wet **** ' review of who played well and who did not.
Malachi Fields — The rookie wide receiver had a 15-yard touchdown catch from a scrambling Jaxson Dart that perfectly illustrated the kind of weapon he can be. He worked for the quarterback and used his size, athleticism, and strong hands to haul in the touchdown pass. Fields finished with three catches for 34 yards.
Braxton Berrios — I will just come out and say it. If Berrios gets through the preseason healthy, he is making the roster. Berrios was the first punt returner and was on the first kickoff return group with Deonte Banks. He had two 15-yard punt returns and caught a pass for 9 yards.
Darius Alexander — The second-year player was a better pass rusher than run defender as a rookie. Saturday, things looked the same. Alexander had a sack, a tackle for loss, and a quarterback hit.
Chauncey Golston — The versatile backup edge defender/defensive end had a tackle for loss and two quarterback hits in limited action.

The beautiful setting — This is a gorgeous place. If you love lush green trees, the mountains, open ***** es, fresh air with a lack of humidity, crisp evenings and early mornings, and the feel of having stepped back in time to an earlier era this is the kind of place for you.
Kayvon Thibodeaux — Thibodeaux has taken more reps with the second team than the first team, but no matter. He is a key part of the defense and is being used both on the edge and at times in the old Justin Tuck role as an interior pass rusher. Thibodeaux has made impact plays every day against starters and backups. He seems happy, and could be primed for a big season in his contract year.
Abdul Carter — The second-year edge defender has been impactful throughout the first four practices. Of course, Andrew Thomas and the other offensive linemen are not in pads, making it more difficult to block. Carter might not win Defensive Player of the Year, but he does seem primed to make a big leap in Year 2.
Braxton Berrios — The veteran wide receiver/return man keeps showing up as a receiver. He has made a number of catches each day. It is early in camp, but Berrios is showing he can be a useful player.

Braxton Berrios — The veteran wide receiver/return man made several catches on Wednesday. He backed that up with another productive day on Thursday. Berrios is making an early impression in the competition for one of the final roster spots.
Dominic Zvada — There were no placekicking sessions in Thursday's workout. On the final play of practice, though, Zvada walked on and drilled a 57-yard field goal after the ball had been clocked by backup quarterback Brandon Allen with :01 left on the clock. Score one for the undrafted free agent in his competition with Ben Sauls.

The Toronto Blue Jays do not need to chase the loudest MLB trade deadline headline. They need a fifth starter. That sounds boring. Good. Boring is exactly how smart teams actually fix themselves. The Blue Jays have enough recognizable names on the roster that it is easy to imagine a bigger, flashier deadline move. An impact bat would be exciting. A late-inning reliever would make sense.
Those are the types of additions that create buzz and feel like immediate upgrades. But Toronto’s clearest need is less dramatic than that, and it starts with stabilizing the back end of the rotation.

The top of the Blue Jays’ rotation is fine enough to compete. That is not the issue. The issue is what happens after that. The No. 5 spot has been unstable, and the injuries have made the margin even thinner. José Berríos and Cody Ponce are done for the year. Max Scherzer has been back on the injured list. Patrick Corbin doesn’t exactly scream solution.
So why are we pretending this is complicated? Toronto needs someone who can take the ball every fifth day and not tax the bullpen into a crime scene by the fourth inning. That may not be ***** y, but it works. It works in July. It works in September. And if the Blue Jays actually get to October, it works when the entire pitching staff is being squeezed for outs.
