US President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend game three of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on Monday, saying he accepted an invitation from New York Knicks owner James Dolan.
"The answer is yes," Trump told reporters at the White House, when asked if would attend. "He's invited me, I'm going."
The Knicks will host the San Antonio Spurs in game three of the best-of-seven championship series on Monday, with game four on Wednesday, June 10.
Trump was initially vague on which game he would make -- not ruling out attending both.
The White House confirmed his intention to be at Monday's game in its daily guidance on the president's schedule.

SAN ANTONIO — With 60 seconds remaining and Game 1 of the NBA Finals hanging in the balance, the ball naturally rested in Victor Wembanyama's massive hands.
Matched up with Karl-Anthony Towns on the right wing, with his evening mileage creeping on 40 grueling minutes and offensive struggles dominating his debut, the logistics weren't in his favor. Still, he pressed on. He had to.
In Wembanyama's mind, he knew where he wanted to go, the desired angle to attack Towns. Previous possessions involving the alien and unicorn had shown the possibility of production. But at that moment, as he put the ball on the ground and began his charge, his body had other plans. Wembanyama lost control, the consummation of fatigue from a system that had channeled all of its efforts through his limbs against a smart, physical Knicks team. Josh Hart, who had bested the Frenchman on multiple occasions Wednesday evening from an energy standpoint, pounced on the opportunity, spawning a fast break, a Jalen Brunson dagger and a knockout punch.
"I'm going to figure it out," Wembanyama said following the 105-95 loss. "Yeah, I mean, I was bad tonight. It's not more complicated than that. … I think we let that one go."
Given that the postseason — much less the NBA Finals — is more or less an expanded chess match, and how Towns' new, expanded offensive role as a hub had fundamentally changed New York's playoff path, attempting to throw a wrench in those plans seemed like an adequate first move for the Spurs.

The Arizona Cardinals have not won a Super Bowl yet. They are one of 12 franchises who have not hoisted the Lombardi Trophy.
And unsurprisingly, of the 12 teams who have not yet won one, they are the least likely to do it this season, writes NFL.com's Eric Edholm.
At the bottom are the Cardinals. There’s no clear-cut long-term option at quarterback right now -- unless you consider third-round pick Carson Beck to be that -- and possible starter Jacoby Brissett remains at odds with the team over his contract. Throw in what was an underachieving defense last season, a conundrum in Marvin Harrison Jr. and a surprisingly old roster, along with playing in the gauntlet that is the NFC West, and you can begin to imagine the chore that new head coach Mike LaFleur faces in the desert.
It’s not a completely lost cause, however. If all that talent on defense comes together, Arizona could have a fairly competent unit, especially with a fierce group up front (depending on whether or not it trades Josh Sweat). The secondary also looks like it could be pretty good. Rookie RB Jeremiyah Love should give the offense a boost, Trey McBride is a certifiable stud, and it’s far too soon to give up on Harrison, who's still just 23 years old.
But with QB questions, offensive line concerns and an absolutely brutal schedule, this does not have the look of a team that’s a few pieces away from a ***** le run. Identifying the right quarterback this season or next offseason is a crucial goal for an organization that hasn’t been a serious contender for more than a decade.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, the college sports industry enters one of the most exciting stretches of its calendar.
In Oklahoma City, a national champion will be crowned at the Women’s College World Series in a ***** le bout pitting rivals Texas and Texas Tech. At eight different on-campus super regional sites, baseball parks will be teeming with fans as a trip to Omaha is on the line.
And on Capitol Hill, inside a marble-walled committee room, with the future of college athletics at stake, a much different game is set to be played: the political one.
Former Alabama coach Nick Saban, Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua and Pac-12 commissioner Teresa Gould headline a lineup of witnesses testifying in a hearing before members of the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday morning — perhaps the most significant of the more than a dozen hearings held here since 2020.
At the center of what’s supposed to be a more than two-hour affair is a newly introduced bill from Sens. Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell intended to reform the college athletics industry. The “Protect College Sports Act” is the most comprehensive, bipartisan college sports legislation produced during the NCAA’s seven-year lobbying effort — and it’s a bill that many believe has the best chance to pass among those introduced.

After a quick four-game series split against the Giants in Milwaukee, the Brewers are headed out west for a three-game set in Denver against the Colorado Rockies. The Crew sits at 37-23 on the season, five games ahead of the Cardinals and Pirates atop the NL Central as of this writing. On the other side, the Rockies are coming off back-to-back series wins over the Giants and Angels, moving them to 24-39 on the season, still in last place in the NL West.
While several key players have returned for the Brewers in recent weeks, they had a string of injuries in Thursday’s series finale against the Giants, as both DL Hall and Grant Anderson exited. Hall has already been ruled out for the road trip, as he’ll remain in Milwaukee to undergo an MRI scan as he deals with left subscapular/pectoral discomfort. Anderson, who took a liner off his right arm, is reportedly day-to-day with a contusion after X-rays were negative. Lefty Rob Zastryzny, who returned from the IL last weekend, went right back on the shelf with a trap strain, and he’s out until at least late June. Right-hander Brandon Woodruff is close to returning, as is outfielder Brandon Lockridge, who is on the verge of a rehab **** ignment. Right-hander Quinn Priester is now rehabbing with the ACL Brewers as he continues to deal with the effects of thoracic outlet syndrome. Right-hander Logan Henderson and left-hander Jared Koenig are also expected to return in the coming weeks.
For Colorado, they also have a few day-to-day injuries, as TJ Rumfield is dealing with a nagging shoulder issue, and Tyler Freeman is dealing with shin soreness. Outfielders Jordan Beck, Mickey Moniak, and Brenton Doyle are also out, with Moniak the closest to returning, potentially as soon as this weekend. DH Kris Bryant continues to be plagued by injuries, as he hasn’t played a single game this season. On the pitching side, RJ Petit (2027), McCade Brown (TBD), Jose Quintana (second half), Chase Dollander (TBD), Victor Vodnik (TBD), Jimmy Herget (mid-June), and Welinton Herrera (TBD) are all out.
Jake Bauers is the first Brewer to hit double-digit homers this year, hitting his 10th of the season earlier this week. Brice Turang has seven homers, while Jackson Chourio’s two-homer game in Thursday’s series finale brings him to four for the year, tied with William Contreras and Christian Yelich. Beyond those guys, Milwaukee’s offense features Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, David Hamilton, Andrew Vaughn, Joey Ortiz, Gary Sánchez, Blake Perkins, and Luis Rengifo. As a team, the Brewers are hitting .247/.336/.369 (.705 OPS ranks tied for 16th), with 44 homers (last), 301 runs (sixth), and 63 steals (second).
Catcher Hunter Goodman leads Colorado’s offense with 15 homers this season, with Rumfield at eight homers and Jake McCarthy and Ezequiel Tovar the next best among active players at four homers apiece. Willi Castro, Kyle Karros, Freeman, Edouard Julien, and Troy Johnston round out healthy regulars, while Sterlin Thompson,

PHOENIX — Former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes, who signed the richest contract in Arizona Diamondbacks history, was scheduled to begin his rehab ******* ignment Friday and return to the Diamondbacks in July for the first time in 13 months.
The plan was to step into the rotation, be there for the pennant stretch, and lead the Diamondbacks back into the postseason with perhaps a deep October run.
Instead, there he was Thursday, talking about changing diapers and making his kids’ lunch at home for another two months, hoping he can just return by the end of the season for his sanity.
Burnes, who signed a six-year, $210 million contract, had his Tommy John surgery recovery paused for at least another two months after an MRI revealed that he has a teres major/lat strain in his right shoulder.
“It's obviously frustrating,’’ Burnes said. “Your team’s playing good baseball, you want to get back and have as much of an impact as you can. … It's tough to have put in work for 11 months and you're a little over a month away from being back. It sucks.’’

Jun. 4—ABERDEEN — Eighth-seeded Elk Point-Jefferson knocked off No. 1 Madison on Thursday in the Class A state high school softball quarterfinals by a score of 3-1 at the Players Softball Complex.
EPJ (10-6) will play West Central in Friday's state semifinal round at 2 p.m. The game was a rematch of a May 19 game in Elk Point, which Madison won 11-10. This time, the lower-scoring showdown was in the Huskies' favor, neutralizing a Madison offense that averaged 12.7 runs per game entering the state tournament.
EPJ took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Molly Geary scored from second base on a Bailey Johnson ground ball that Madison fumbled for an error. The Bulldogs got the run back in the bottom half of the frame when Kelcie Dudley had an RBI single.
The Huskies took the lead for good in the top of the third inning, with Cera Schmitz picking up a two-out RBI single to score Geary for a 2-1 lead. After a fielder's choice that didn't end the inning and a walk, Schmitz was able to score on a passed ball to give EPJ a 3-1 lead.
The Huskies' Regan Rasmussen started in the circle and kept the Madison offense in check, allowing three hits and one unearned run with seven strikeouts and one walk for the win. Schmitz finished with two of EPJ's three hits, including a triple, and Rasmussen added a single.

The FIFA World Cup starts soon. For the first time, each team will have an AI coach.
When Mexico kicks off against South Africa at Estadio Azteca on June 11, the 2026 World Cup will be the biggest in the tournament’s history: 48 teams, 104 matches, three countries. It will also be the first World Cup where every single team walks in with the same AI ******* yst sitting on the bench.
Or maybe not exactly sitting. And not quite on the bench, either. Think of FIFA AI Pro more as a coach in the cloud, perhaps. With, of course, a perfect photographic memory of thousands of soccer games.
Essentially, it’s ChatGPT for football (or soccer, depending on where you live). Co-developed by FIFA and tournament sponsor Lenovo and unveiled in January at CES, FIFA AI Pro is an AI ******* istant that lets all 48 World Cup teams query FIFA’s exclusive match data — millions of data points across 2,000+ metrics — and get tactical insights back as video, animated replays, and 3D avatars.
Teams can ask FIFA AI Pro almost any kind of match-related question:

The 2026 NBA Draft is less than three weeks away, and sifting through the speculation is especially intriguing this year.
There's a consensus top four of AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer and Caleb Wilson, but no consensus on what order in which they will be chosen. Dybantsa remains the trendy pick to go No. 1 in recent mock draft updates, but there is little agreement on the pecking order for the group of guards expected to be picked beginning as early as the fifth pick in the first round. Potential choices diverge even more from there now that the withdrawal deadline for prospects to return to college has passed.
AI is trying to figure out what's what just like the humans that feed its information capabilities, based on the latest mock draft curated by USA TODAY Sports using Microsoft Copilot's artificial intelligence chatbot. Though its top-four stayed the same, the rest of the first round is almost completely different from its ****** ysis last month after the conclusion of the NBA draft scouting combine. It's a reflection of the changing perception of draft experts as workouts continue and new intel emerges.
Here's a breakdown of Microsoft Copilot AI's latest 2026 NBA mock draft, including the chatbot's reasoning for making each first-round pick:

While just about all undrafted free agent contracts are worth roughly $3.1 million in total value, like any deal in the NFL, the guaranteed money is much more important. That really shows how much a team is committed to a player, and in the case of an undrafted rookie, that can often be an indiciation into how strongly the organization feels said player will make the 53-man roster or contribute down the line.
Spotrac has the details on the money for the Las Vegas Raiders’ 2026 UDFA class, allowing us to come up with some takeaways and form a few insights into the position battles heading into training camp.
This will be one of the biggest competitions to keep tabs on in Las Vegas this summer, since the offense lacks depth at wide receiver and there’s a good chance at least one UDFA makes the team. If that’s the case, Corey Rucker and Chase Roberts appear to be heading into camp with an advantage over E.J. Williams and Jonathan Brady.
Rucker is tied with Cian Slone as the highest-paid or highest-guaranteed undrafted rookie at $272.5k, while Roberts is only $5k behind them in third place. Meanwhile, Williams is only getting $20k, and Brady doesn’t have any guaranteed money since he was a rookie minicamp invite who earned a spot on the 90-man roster.
That likely means Rucker and Roberts will enter training camp a little higher on the depth chart than the two Indiana wideouts. Granted, having familiarity with Fernando Mendoza could prove to be more valuable than immediate cash when it’s all said and done.

Scouting Summary: “Well-rounded, polished signal caller with one of the stronger arms in the 2027 cycle. Measured at a shade under 6-foot-3, 200 pounds with 9.25-inch hands prior to his senior season. Brings a combination of high-end arm talent and refinement to the table. Has a whippy release that uncoils quickly to generate fast arm action. Added arm strength in the off-season prior to his senior year. Can drive the football to all areas of the field with palpable zip. Rips throws out to the far hash and up the seam. Throws a tight spiral that cuts through the wind. Has proven to be accurate in multiple settings. Hyper-trained and plays with a good level of consistency as a passer. Passed for over 3,300 yards and 36 touchdowns against 5 interceptions as a junior. Tabbed as Rivals MVP at the Elite 11 Finals in the off-season prior to his senior season. Shows the ability to extend plays, but at his most comfortable when working from within structure. Improved rushing ability and overall athleticism from sophomore to junior year. Default arm slot is in the ¾ to side arm range. Level of improvement late in his high school career should be taken as a positive. Looks like one of the top quarterbacks in the cycle entering his senior season with the upside to develop into an early round draft pick.” – Rivals Director of Scouting and Rankings, Charles Power
The Skinny: When it came down to putting up strong statistics out of the state of Nebraska last season, it was Warren lighting the airwaves of opposing secondaries in 2025. The Missouri commitment was stellar for Westside last season, finishing the campaign completing 125 of 202 passes for 1,847 yards, 27 touchdowns and only six picks. Warren also was solid via the ground game, rushing for 288 yards and scoring three times.
The Skinny: One of the leaders among the 2027 class of quarterbacks from the Cornhusker State was the South Dakota commitment. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound signal caller was superb as he helped lead the team to a perfect season at 13-0 and to a state championship. Teply last year ended up completing 152 of 237 passes for 2,362 yards and 27 touchdowns. With his senior season left before leaving for college, expect Teply to have his most productive year.

SAN ANTONIO — For such a young group in the most pressurized situation of their collective careers, the Spurs find themselves in a strange sense of calm, despite surrendering home-court advantage in the NBA Finals.
A decent portion of that emotional control stems from De’Aaron Fox — the veteran point guard who struggled in Game 1, finishing with just 7 points on 3-for-13 shooting and three turnovers, and who failed to convert a single outside shot. Given how heavily San Antonio relies on Fox’s presence — he played 38 minutes despite his lack of production — his ability to offer control and poise is extremely important, and his understanding of his role remains critical.
Fox’s overall usage is essentially the lowest of his career, a shade above his rookie season, but the 28-year-old has been a positive playmaking presence since last season’s trade to the Spurs.
“I mean, I've got to make shots,” Fox said on Thursday. “Obviously I'm not shooting the ball as much. But coming here, I knew that was the way it was going to be. As a player, you sacrifice for the betterment of the team. There are times where I need to take shots or times where I don't take as many shots, but at the end of the day, you need to make the shots that you take.”
Zooming out a bit, Fox’s overall shot quality in Game 1 was remarkably better than the previous 17 playoff games, which lines up with his and the team’s Monday morning quarterback **** sment. Still, in terms of his downhill gravity and how it relates to San Antonio’s overall floor **** ing, there needs to be improvement heading into a must-win Game 2.

Liverpool have been tipped to conduct a midfield refit this summer.
The deposed Premier League champions suffered as a result of poor form from some of their **** le-winning midfielder last season - leading to speculation they will be replaced.
Adam Wharton and Lamine Camara are among the candidates to enter Anfield this summer - with incoming moves sure to have a knock-on effect for the players already there.
Perhaps the biggest uncertainty surrounds Alexis Mac Allister.
The 27-year-old is under contract until summer 2028 and is known to be a target for Real Madrid. His father - Carlos - denied earlier this week that talks were already under way for a move to the Bernabeu.

After reports surfaced claiming that Eintracht Frankfurt defender Nathaniel Brown has agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich, the Germany international was asked about the speculation during a media round on Thursday evening, as reported by Sky Germany.
However, the 22-year-old declined to confirm or deny the reports, saying instead that he wants to concentrate solely on Germany’s World Cup preparations.
“I'm fully focused on the World Cup. That’s why I won’t comment on this today. My focus is only on the World Cup,” Brown said.
According to reports, Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt are currently in talks over the transfer fee, with Brown’s club demanding around €60 million to let him go.
After starting in Sunday’s 4–0 win over Finland, the 22-year-old could be involved again when Germany face the United States on Saturday in their final friendly ahead of the World Cup.

Matheus Nunes is set to maintain his position as Manchester City’s primary right-back option going forward.
The club’s recruitment department has initiated a search to acquire a specialised, youthful defensive profile to ease the strain on the Portuguese international.
Incoming manager Enzo Maresca has prioritised depth over an overhaul as he shapes his blueprint at the Etihad Stadium.
Matheus Nunes’ future as Manchester City’s first-choice right-back appears to be safe, despite interest from the club in recruiting within the role this summer.
Amid his pending arrival at the Etihad Stadium on an expected three-year contract, incoming manager Enzo Maresca is believed to have already been working alongside Sporting Director Hugo Viana to audit the first-team squad.

After bidding farewell to Borussia Dortmund, German international Julian Brandt has reportedly been proposed to Lazio.
The 30-year-old is a Bremen native who had spells at the academies of Borgfeld, Oberneul, and Wolfsburg before joining Bayer Leverkusen, where he cemented himself as one of the most exciting attackers in the Bundesliga. In 2019, he completed a €25 million move to Dortmund and went on to make 307 appearances for the club, contributing with 57 goals and 70 ****** ists.
Brandt’s experience at the Signal Iduna Park has now come to an end, with his departure confirmed at the end of the month.
According to Italian journalist Damiano Er Faina (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the German player’s services have been offered to several clubs, including Lazio. But while Brandt would be open to joining the Biancoclesti, the Aquile are reluctant to meet his salary request.
Julian Brandt has been offered to Lazio. His salary was considered a bit too high, between €2.5 and €3 million. Lazio could cover him if they wanted; his agent is contacting several clubs. The player would be willing to come. I don’t know who made this offer, but relations with his agents are good.

The Washington Huskies' lone commit along the offensive line in the 2027 class, Reis Russell, is an intriguing study in national recruiting rankings.
The 6-foot-3, 290-pound product of Valor Christian High School, who holds 35 offers from some of the nation's elite programs, and picked Jedd Fisch's team out of a group that also included Georgia, Florida, Miami, Oregon, and USC, is ranked outside the top 1,000 players nationally by the 247Sports Composite. However, that should change soon.
In ESPN's latest recruiting rankings, the Worldwide Leader in Sports placed Russell as the nation's No. 11 interior offensive lineman, which lines up much closer with the evaluation process that most major Power 4 programs went through before extending a scholarship to him.
While center isn't the most coveted position on the recruiting trail, which is what several national ***** ysts have leaned on when determining Russell's ranking, his film (and expansive list of offers) shows that he has all the traits needed to succeed at the college level.
On film, Russell displays tremendous power and explosiveness out of his stance. No matter where he's lined up along the offensive line, he shows fluid athleticism as he climbs to the second level and routinely disposes of opposing defenders with ease, while displaying the physicality that offensive line coach Michael Switzer desires along the interior of the offensive line.

The biggest question surrounding the Detroit Lions right now is whether they will make running back Jahmyr Gibbs the NFL’s first $100 million running back. What is no longer in question, however, is his importance to the offense following David Montgomery’s departure.
Fantasy football managers may have received even more encouraging news on Thursday. Lions head coach Dan Campbell spoke with reporters and showered Gibbs with praise. More importantly, he officially anointed Gibbs as the unquestioned bell-cow back of the offense.
MORE: Jacksonville Jaguars star Brian Thomas Jr. appears ready for massive bounce-back season
That designation means Detroit plans to build its offense around Gibbs. Few players possess his combination of explosiveness, versatility, and playmaking ability. Many around the league already view him as the NFL’s top running back. For fantasy football players preparing for drafts, Gibbs has a legitimate case to be the No. 1 overall pick.
Dynasty fantasy football managers should be especially excited. Gibbs’ trade value has skyrocketed, and his outlook extends well beyond the 2026 season. He remains under contract through 2027, and Detroit could eventually reward him with a record-setting extension to keep him in town for the long haul.

And with that news, Barron Collier great Clifton Robinson can pop some champagne.
Nino Joseph, who announced his intention to transfer from Lely to St. John Neumann in January, is transferring to Miami Central, according to his social media pages on Thursday, June 4.
Joseph ran for 1,955 yards and 53 touchdowns a season ago with the Trojans, finishing 8-4 with a regional semifinal appearance. Joseph (4,615 rushing yards, 57 rushing TDs) was well-positioned to become Collier County's all-time leading rusher had he stayed, needing just 1,250 yards to overtake Robinson for the record, which still stands at 5,864 yards three decades later.

World No. 1 Nelly Korda has put herself in a hole after her opening round at Riviera Country Club, carding a 2-over 73.
The reigning Chevron champion teed off for Round 1 of the 2026 U.S. Women's Open on Thursday morning, paired with world No. 3 Hyo Joo Kim and No. 5 Hannah Green. The trio has combined for seven of 13 possible wins on the LPGA Tour this season (two wins each for Kim and Green, three for Korda).
Korda had an interesting start to her round with a bit of a wardrobe change. Golf Channel's Amy Rogers reported that she was gifted shoes by LeBron James that she wore to start her round, but those shoes were a little too loose for her liking. So Korda's trainer went and grabbed her regular shoes from her locker.
Keep reading for a recap of Korda's rollercoaster day at Riviera.

If a recent report from Rangers News (as cited by The Daily Record) is believed to be true, Rangers are in direct contact with Hampus Skoglund’s representatives ahead of a potential summer move. They are also monitoring his former U21 Sweden teammate Casper Widell, and the Excelsior centre-back could also be roped in alongside the Hammarby right-back.
The 22-year-old defender, who is representing his nation at the U21 level, progressed through IK Frej and Hammarby’s academy ranks before breaking into the latter’s reserves in the third tier of Swedish football. Skoglund was soon promoted to their senior side, as he has so far appeared 80 times for Bajen across competitions.
Although both Rangers and Schalke have been keeping close tabs on the youngster for quite some time, the Glasgow giants are now accelerating talks to restore parity in the right-back role. James Tavernier decided to part ways after an illustrious career, and the club are weighing up alternatives, including Skoglund.

Besides Tavernier, Danny Rohl deployed Dujon Sterling and Max Aarons on the right-hand side of a ‘back four’ setup. Sterling impressed with his energetic runs and attacking prowess, but the gaffer could not rely on him week in, week out due to his persistent injury woes. Max Aarons, on loan from Bournemouth, failed to cement a regular spot and is now back at his parent club, as he is unlikely to return to Ibrox for one more season.

The freight downturn that defined 2023 and 2024 has decisively reversed, and the May data clarifies the mechanism behind it: industrial production, rather than consumer spending or inventory restocking, is now driving the cycle. FreightWaves identified the inflection months ago. The latest readings from the Institute for Supply Management and the Logistics Managers’ Index, corroborated by real-time tender data, confirm it.
The ISM Manufacturing PMI registered 54.0 in May, up 1.3 points from April and the highest reading since May 2022. The index has now held above the expansion threshold for five consecutive months, following a 10-month contraction. On ISM’s own regression, a 54.0 composite is consistent with roughly 2.2% annualized growth in real GDP.
The internals are stronger than the headline. The New Orders index rose to 56.8, comfortably above the 51.9 level ISM identifies as the breakeven for rising Census manufacturing orders in constant dollars. Production reached 54.3, above the 52.0 threshold ***** ociated with rising Federal Reserve industrial output. As a forward-looking series, new orders typically lead realized freight volumes by several weeks, which makes the current reading the more economically meaningful of the two.
Breadth reinforces the signal. All six of the largest manufacturing industries expanded in May — led by computer and electronic products, machinery, and transportation equipment — and 16 of 18 industries reported growth, with only wood products in contraction. Diffusion of this width is characteristic of a self-sustaining expansion rather than a narrow, sector-specific rebound.
The labor data points to a productivity-led expansion. The Employment index came in at 48.6 — still below the 50.3 breakeven for rising BLS manufacturing payrolls, but up 2.2 points and trending toward it. Manufacturers have expanded output for seven straight months while holding headcount roughly flat, indicating they are absorbing incremental demand through existing capacity. Payroll growth typically lags output in the early phase of an industrial recovery; the trajectory of the employment index suggests hiring is the next stage.
