There haven't been many games like last night, but the couple that the Brewers have had have felt like the worst time to have them. Tonight, the conditions at The Friendly Confines look to be similar to last night, meaning the best pitching staff in the National League will have their work cut out for them yet again.
To make things more interesting, both pitchers toeing the slab have had quite the interesting lines for their respective scenarios. For Robert Gasser, he has not looked comfortable in road games this season, entering tonight's game with a 5.10 ERA, having allowed 45 hits with nine home runs. On the bright side of things, he is coming off of one of his better performances this season as he allowed just one run in 5.1 innings, something he hasn't done since August 1 against the Angels.
While Gasser's stats might sound scary, it's not quite as bad as what we've seen from the Cubs starting pitcher Matthew Boyd during home games this season. Through eight starts, Boyd has posted a 5.44 ERA, allowing at least five runs in each of his last two starts. To pour a little more salt into the wound, Boyd hasn't fared well against the Brewers throughout his career, as he has a 9.00 ERA in five starts, allowing nine home runs, 16 walks, and 30 hits.
With the offense looking like it's going to be the name of the game tonight, the Brewers will continue to go with the home run-heavy top of the lineup. As will the Cubs tonight, as they're fresh off of the second most home runs hit by an MLB team in history with nine last night. The man who had three of them last night, Alex Bregman, will be in the three spot of their lineup last night.
As the calendar flips to September, reinforcements enter the clubhouse. Earlier this afternoon, the Brewers recalled Bo Naylor from Triple-A Nashville, giving the team their third catcher on the active roster. The second reinforcement comes in the left-hander JoJo Romero, who will look to make his Brewers debut tonight. Before the trade with the Cardinals, Romero had appeared in 44 games, recording 20 holds while posting a 3.51 ERA.

It's more than likely that you need a four-man rotation in all three of those rounds, as a three-man rotation would give pitchers just three days of rest between outings. With Jacob Misiorowski and Logan Henderson seemingly locked into the top two spots, it also seems likely that Kyle Harrison is the team's No. 3 arm (though some of his recent results — particularly Monday night's loss to the Cubs — may put that into question).

May left in the first inning with a bruised right scapula when a 106 mph line drive off the bat of leadoff hitter A.J. Ewing ricocheted off his right shoulder blade. The right-hander was replaced by lefty Robert Gasser (4-5), who earned the win by tossing 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball.
May became the first major league starter to exit after one pitch since Pablo López with the Miami Marlins on July 2, 2021.
David Hamilton, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell and Christian Yelich had RBI singles for the major league-leading Brewers (82-50), who clinched their sixth straight winning season and ninth in the last 10 years. Milwaukee finished over .500 just 15 times in the franchise's first 48 seasons.
The homer for Turang was his first since July 31. He is hitting just .188 with 10 RBIs this month.

The Dodgers lost the first game of this possible postseason preview in exasperating fashion and now look to even up the series on Friday night.
The Dodgers have the right pitcher on the mound to achieve that goal. Yoshinobu Yamamoto takes the mound after a good outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks last Saturday, allowing only three hits and no earned runs, in the only game the Dodgers won in their 1-8 skid to start the month. The Dodgers barely scored enough runs in that game to win 2-1, in what is a common theme in Yamamoto starts.
Robert Gasser takes the mound for the Milwaukee Brewers. The lefty is 3-4 on the season with a 4.57 ERA. He also pitched last Saturday, getting a no-decision, allowing three earned runs in just 4.2 innings. Gasser faced the Dodgers in May in Milwaukee, where he went 4.1 innings allowing four earned runs on four hits, garnering his first loss of the season. All of those Dodgers run came in the fourth inning.
It felt like the Dodgers struggled to score four in Thursday night's game, continuing the trend of the offense showing up in bits and drabs. Gasser has not been going long into games so perhaps the Dodgers could get into the Brewers bullpen to finally do some damage. Tonight, Andrew Vaughn reminded Twins Territory why any player whose career has involved only the Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers is bad news for a team based in Minnesota. Vaughn's tiebreaking eighth-inning single sealed the deal on a Brew Crew win, evening the series and handing the loss to recent acquisition Jeff Hoffman.
The Twins isolated their offense to the second inning tonight, rallying against Brewer starter Robert Gasser after a plethora of baserunners made it 1-0 Milwaukee in the home first. Luke Keaschall led off the inning with a double, then watched as Kaelen Culpepper filled first behind him on a HBP (the first of two tonight for the newcomer.) After a pair of quick outs, the threat was threatened (the heat was hot), until another bout of loose command — an Austin Martin HBP to load the bases, and a Ryan Jeffers walk to spin the carousel — tied things up for the Twins.
Then, it was a 3-1 lead, with Royce Lewis roping a double to left that plated a pair. Despite the concentration of runs, Gasser would still fail to make it through five innings, giving way after 90-some-odd pitches and seven hits allowed by the fifth inning, paired with two walks and two hit batsmen. The Milwaukee bullpen would go 4.1 shutout innings, and the Twins would not record a hit after Gasser's exit.
Meanwhile, a two-out Brice Turang single tied the score in the fourth, as Bradley — who hit a man and walked two of this own — was unable to get past five innings.

Early on in this one, it looked like the Brewers might get blown out. Brewer starter Robert Gasser was teetering on the edge, while after a rough start the Twins' Taj Bradley was locked in. But the Brewers scratched and clawed their way back into this one, and behind a big night from Brice Turang and a fantastic 4 1/3 innings from their bullpen, Milwaukee took a late lead and finished off a comeback victory.
After Austin Martin lined out to left on the first pitch of the game, Ryan Jeffers lined a ball down the right-field line, but a fortunate bounce went right to Jake Bauers who held him to a single. Gasser came back with a nice strikeout of Royce Lewis, but Josh Bell—who, based on the last two days, is the greatest baseball player of all time—battled from 0-2 and flicked a two-out single into left to put runners on the corners with two out. Gasser, though, got Kody Clemens to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Turang then got the Brewers off to a good start by sending a fly ball bouncing off the wall in right field for a leadoff double. Jackson Chourio drew a five-pitch walk, and Bauers lined a single into right—Turang, who had to pause to ensure it wouldn't be caught, moved up to third, and the first three Brewers were all on base.

After being swept in yesterday's doubleheader in Pittsburgh, the Brewers will look to bounce back and finish off the first half of the season with their 60th victory today. Sitting at 59-36, the Brewers currently sit six games ahead of the Cubs atop the NL Central, and no matter what happens today, the first half of the season can only be considered a success.

The Brewers were rained out last night! I hope you'll forgive that instead of rewriting an entire new game discussion, I'm just going to (mostly) copy and paste what I wrote before yesterday's game, because both teams are using the same lineups they announced last night.
However, there are two new pieces of information today. The first is minor, and that's that Garrett Stallings has been spotted in Pittsburgh and is presumably the 27th man for today's double header (he should be available in the nightcap). The second is more troubling: Kyle Harrison has been placed on the 15-day injured list with forearm tightness, with Robert Gasser getting recalled to replace him on the roster.
Harrison himself has reiterated what he said a couple days ago: that he's not too worried. Plus, a 15-day stint on the IL right now isn't the worst thing in the world—15 days from July 9th means he could be eligible to return after missing only six games on the other side of the All-Star break, and he wasn't going to pitch this weekend anyway. It sounds like the Brewers already had some sort of plan in this respect:
Hopefully, this is just a precautionary short stint for Harrison. The Brewers have proved remarkably flexible when it comes to replacing their injured starters this season, but if Harrison is lost for a longer period, it would be a real blow.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Joey Ortiz homered, Robert Gasser pitched a career-high 7 2/3 innings and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-2 Tuesday night to complete a doubleheader sweep.
Jacob Misiorowski struck out 11 in the first game of the split doubleheader, which was a makeup from May 5, and the Brewers won 4-3.
Milwaukee has won four straight games and seven in a row against St. Louis. The Cardinals lost their fourth straight.
Gasser (2-3) allowed just a two-run homer to Nelson Velázquez. He struck out four, walked one and scattered four hits.
Cooper Pratt gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead with a leadoff triple in the third inning and scored on a Christian Yelich groundout.
Jacob Misiorowski struck out 11 in the first game of the split doubleheader, which was a makeup from May 5, and the Brewers won 4-3.

Hunter Dobbins was entrusted with the starting duties of game 2 of the day/night doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers and did a great job of limiting their offense to minimal damage in the early innings. The St. Louis Cardinals offense did not make a significant appearance in the game and the 7th inning was a disaster – again.
The Brewers didn’t make a dent in Hunter Dobbins outing until Cooper Pratt tripled to lead off the top of the 3rd inning. He would score 2 batters later when Christian Yelich grounded out to Masyn Winn giving Milwaukee a 1-0 lead.
More trouble would arrive in the top of the 5th inning as walks would come back to haunt Hunter Dobbins. He walked Sanchez to start the Brewers 5th. After Frelick flied out, Dobbins then walked Pratt. Ortiz singled to right to load the bases. Hunter was able to strike out Christian Yelich, but one of Milwaukee’s top prospects who was just called up to the majors Luis Lara smacked his first major league hit into right field after a diving JJ Wetherholt scoring 2 and increasing the Brewers lead to 3-0. Hunter Dobbins would complete 5 innings allowing 4 hits, 3 earned runs while striking out 4 and walking 3.
Jared Shuster, who was just called up today from Memphis, entered the game in the top of the 6th inning with one runner on. He walked Jake Bauers, the first batter he faced, to give the Brewers runners on first and second with no outs, but struck out Sanchez. Shuster was also able to coax a flyout to center from Jackson Chourio for the second out. He got out of the inning when Cooper Pratt grounded into a force out to end the Milwaukee 6th.
The Cardinals bats were extremely quiet for the first 5 innings with the exception of Jordan Walker. He had one of the only St. Louis hits in the early innings and hammered an 86 mph changeup for another single with two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning. He would cross home plate shortly after thanks to a jolt that Nelson Velázquez put into a 93 mph four-seam fastball from Brewers pitcher Gasser as it sailed into the plants above the left field wall reducing the Milwaukee lead to 3-2.

The Brewers opened their series against the Reds last night with a late rally to take a 5-3 win. It was their fourth straight win against the Reds this season. The Brewers will try to extend that to five straight wins tonight.
Brandon Sproat starts game two for the Brewers. He’s pitched six innings in two of his last three starts, with his last one particularly impressive. Coming against this Reds’ team, he pitched six shutout innings with just one hit allowed and 10 strikeouts. This is his third career start against them.
For the Reds, Rhett Lowder gets the start. The Brewers also faced him in their last series, and scored three runs off him in 5 2/3 innings. Overall this season, Lowder has a 4.81 ERA and 4.67 FIP in 12 games over 58 innings.

They did not need to clear a 40-man spot since one was open following Luis Rengifo’s DFA and release. While this is not a surprising roster move, the destination is. There could be a few reasons for this. The Brewers are traveling to Arizona after this series for three games against the Diamondbacks. Gasser cannot be called up for fifteen days unless it’s as a corresponding move for an injury. This could be some security if there is an injury concern on the pitching staff. It could also be for some extra work, as other pitchers have rehabbed in Arizona since it provides a more flexible environment, especially when pitching in games.

ATLANTA (AP) — When Milwaukee scored eight runs in the second inning of Sunday's game at Atlanta, Robert Gasser's path to his first win since 2024 seemed clear.
When the left-hander had thrown 66 pitches through only three innings, it seemed far less certain Gasser would remain in the game long enough to qualify for the win.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy believed it was time to give Gasser a strong pep talk.
"We challenged him and he took it well, he did a good job," Murphy said after Gasser gave up two runs in six innings in the 9-4 win over the Braves. Gasser's outing was crucial as the Brewers salvaged one win in the three-game series.
Gasser (1-3) earned his first win since May 15, 2024, against Pittsburgh.

Called up May 13 from the minors, Bolte connected on a 1-1 changeup from Robert Gasser and sent it 446 feet to right-center field to give the A's a 3-2 lead in the second inning.
Tyler Soderstrom snapped a 3-all tie with a two-run homer in the fifth, and the A's also got solo shots from Nick Kurtz, Jonah Heim and Zack Gelof.
