ATLANTA − Tennessee football fans traveled in force to cheer on the Vols in a Week 2 game against Georgia Tech on Sept. 12 at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Large sections of fans wearing orange were visible among the light gold and white shirts that Yellow Jackets fans were sporting. And the No. 18 Vols received a loud reception when they took the field for final warmups.
"We're only about three hours away from Knoxville. It seems like half of Neyland Stadium made the drive," ESPN play-by-play announcer Bob Wischusen said during the broadcast.
While the Georgia Tech band performed the national anthem, UT fans occupied most of the east side of the stadium. A large contingent of Vols vans were also in the second deck of the north endzone.
There were spots of orange and white spread in every section of Bobby Dodd Stadium save for the Georgia Tech student section.

The Oregon Ducks' defense hasn't received much kudos this week after allowing the Boise State Broncos to score 27 points on them in Week 1, including multiple 70-plus yard scoring drives. While the standard wasn't met as a collective with blue-chippers lining every position, defensive tackle Bear Alexander's performance was a different story.
Facing an underrated Broncos rushing attack headed by Dylan Riley (1,125 yards, 10 touchdowns in 2025) and Sire Gaines (811 yards, eight touchdowns), the Ducks were going to be tested up front to begin the season. And, especially in the second half, there were moments where the Boise State run game was successful in churning out positive gains. But by game's end, they'd ran for just 93 yards on 26 carries, good for just 2.6 yards per pop.
Alexander answered the call, totaling eight tackles including a sack of quarterback Maddux Madsen. There were moments of the second-year Oregon starter simply discarding Boise State's center and guards before swallowing up Riley or Gaines near the line of scrimmage.
The performance of Alexander caught the eye of The Athletic NFL draft ***** yst Dane Brugler, who dove into the Week 1 tape and made a strong claim about the defensive tackle's draft stock.
"At 6-3 and 311 pounds with 34-inch arms and 10 1/8-inch hands, Alexander is a physical presence in the trenches who can shred blocks or hold his ground versus double teams," Brugler wrote. "A former top recruit, he had stops at Georgia and USC before transferring to Oregon, where he is realizing his potential. With his size and ability, Alexander started his senior season as a top-100 prospect and is competing to be in the top-50 conversation."

Michigan news: Brian Kelly urges offensive change to fit Bryce Underwood appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Brian Kelly knows Bryce Underwood's skill set better than most, and the former LSU coach thinks Michigan needs to make some changes.
Kelly recruited Underwood for two years and initially landed his commitment at LSU before the five-star quarterback ultimately flipped to Michigan. After watching Underwood struggle in Michigan's 13-12 Week 1 escape against Western Michigan, Kelly believes the Wolverines need to better utilize their quarterback's athleticism.
"He committed to me at LSU. I recruited him for two years, so I know him very well. He is an elite athlete," Kelly said on The Early Read with Danny Kanell and Roy Philpott on Sirius XM. "I mean, athletically off the charts… He's not a drop-back quarterback that's gonna sit there and read through progressions. He's a half-line guy. You need to keep him on the move. You need to run him. You gotta run this kid. He is big, physical, strong, and fast, and he's tough."

Victor Wembanyama has a gargantuan task ahead of him as he looks to bring the San Antonio Spurs back to basketball glory. He is entering his fourth season, and so far, he has done a good job.
Most recently, he willed the Spurs to an NBA Finals appearance, although they ultimately lost to the New York Knicks. The 2026 season marked the first time since 2019 that the Spurs made the playoffs, and they went all the way to the NBA Finals.
On a personal level, expectations are also high. Many believe Wembanyama can go down as one of the best players ever to grace the NBA. So far, he is exceeding the lofty standards set for him. He won the 2026 Defensive Player of the Year award unanimously and was named to the All-NBA First Team. He also came close to winning the Most Valuable Player award.
All eyes are on Wemby as he steps into greatness.
A member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team is also closely watching his development, believing the French star is carrying the torch for the next generation.

The Los Angeles Rams have historically been OK with a lack of size at the cornerback position. Their last few draft picks—although rare—have demonstrated this from Cobie Durant and Derion Kendrick to the likes of Tre Tomlinson.
But the Rams did something very out of character this offseason: they made a major free agent signing and brought in a player with real size attributes. Jaylen Watson is listed at 6-2 and 197 lbs.
The addition of Watson got lost in the shuffle during the aftermath of LA's trade for higher profile corner Trent McDuffie, his Kansas City teammate. McDuffie also fits the Rams' preference or accommodation of smaller defenders, although he has a strong lower half and is a willing tackler out of the slot.
However, in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers, Watson may be the more important contributor out of the two.
The San Francisco 49ers' biggest offseason addition was receiver Mike Evans. It wouldn't be wise for the Rams to ask McDuffie to cover one of the most physical receivers in the NFL—this is a job for Watson.

What did Texas football get out of Saturday's 59-7 win over Texas State, a not-too-competitive season opener at Royal-Memorial Stadium that came down either to the Bobcats being literally out of their league or the Longhorns ready to take the country by storm. (More on that next week, though.)
Actually, the No. 5 Longhorns got quite a lot out of Saturday:
• Arch Manning was efficient and productive, threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns, completed 74% of his passes and led Texas to touchdowns on six of his seven drives on the day. He gave way to KJ Lacey (6 of 7 for 55 yards) in the third quarter. Manning looked good on deep ******* , too.
• The Horns got some big plays from both of their new running backs, including a 45-yard run and a receiving TD by Hollywood Smothers and 13- and 21-yard TD runs from Raleek Brown.
• Texas' drives went TD, TD, TD, INT, TD, TD, TD, FG and TD on the day. The Horns scored on a defensive TD in there, too.

Mychal Thompson thinks his son, Klay Thompson, is the exact veteran that the Miami Heat should value. But he still gave one very important warning before he starts life under Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra.
Speaking on 104.3 WQAM, Mychal explained Klay's maturity, professionalism, and focus on winning, and that should make him a natural fit in the Heat's very demanding environment.
"Klay is Pat Riley's type of player. Very mature, very adult, only cares about winning. But I did warn him. I said, 'Listen, son. I don't know how other teams handle it, but you cannot be late. If you're a Pat Riley player, you got to be on time. And being early—I should say, being on time is being late. You got to be early."
"That's the way Magic Johnson was, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was when I was with the Lakers. If practice was at 10 o'clock, they were there by 9:15, 9 o'clock, getting ready."
"So that's the main thing I told him, is I don't know what kind of practices you had in Dallas or Golden State in terms of time. When you're talking about Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra, you got to be an adult. You got to be a pro, and you got to be on time and work hard."

The Charlotte Hornets revamped their roster in many ways after a ninth-place finish in the Eastern Conference during the 2025-26 season. LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges are the most notable departures, with Naz Reid, Grayson Allen and Dennis Schroder headlining the list of acquisitions.
Following these moves, ESPN took the time to preview the Hornets ahead of the 2026-27 season. In that preview, ESPN ranked Charlotte as the No. 20 team in their power index. This number is slightly down from last season's production, as the Hornets finished with the 17th-best record between both conferences a season ago. That said, the Hornets were given an "A-" grade for their offseason moves, building for the future while remaining hopeful to compete for a playoff spot, which would be their first since the 2015-16 season.
When evaluating Charlotte's biggest "X factor," ESPN gave three responses, all centers. Moussa Diabate, Ryan Kalkbrenner and rookie Hannes Steinbach were selected, as each has their own unique strengths within the Hornets' rotation.

NFL All-Preseason team: Ty Simpson, Mike Washington, D'Zhaun Stribling among biggest standouts in 2026 originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
As the NFL season is set to kick off in a few weeks, the preseason provided some impressive performances from players looking to prove they belong.
The preseason games are for fringe roster players who, for one reason or another, have to take advantage of the reps before the regular season begins. Whether it's rookies getting their first NFL action or players on the bubble hoping to secure a roster spot, August featured many players providing standout performances.
In some cases, players who excelled in the preseason will carry this over to the regular season as a spark in their careers; in others, this preseason could be a highlight if they are unable to keep the performances up when the regular season begins.
Here's a look at the best players from the 2026 preseason.

The Cardiff game probably left Sheffield United fans slightly puzzled about what to expect in the coming weeks. Boss Chris Wilder himself admitted he was left scratching his head at such an open and breathless game.
However, some encouragement emerged in the form of a first Championship goal of the new season.
It comes after a measly combined total of just four shots on target from the opening two league games. Questions loomed about where the goals would come from this season.
Some answers were found at Cardiff City Stadium.
Tom Cannon's successful penalty was his second goal in two games, having netted in the EFL Cup in midweek. A goal from open play was even more encouraging, with Callum O'Hare looking like one of Sheffield United's bigger attacking threats.

Diane Parry never expected to be the champion of WTA Monterrey, but after a grueling battle with Elise Mertens in the final, it's the Frenchwoman who emerged as champion in Mexico's Sultan of the North.
After a 6-4 0-6 6-3 win over Elise Mertens in the final, Diane Parry spoke on court about how she didn't have the highest of expectations entering the Abierto GNP Seguros, WTA Monterrey, saying "I came here last minute with almost nothing and didn't know what to expect"
Parry's ability to strike the ball from the baseline and work out of difficult situations showed the 23-year-old can win matches anywhere, as she bounced back from being bageled in the second set to focus in and get past the veteran Mertens. Parry also showcased a great one-handed backhand. Some of her best shotmaking came after she took a medical timeout in the second set and needed medical attention to her lower back.

The New York Jets rounded out their preseason schedule against the New York Giants on Friday evening. Soon after, the difficult decisions loomed.
By Sunday at 6 p.m. the Jets and rest of the NFL have to be down to 53 players on their roster. There is little time to worry about a 23-6 loss for head coach Aaron Glenn.
Jets Wire has already released our 53-man roster projection, and in an effort to level with Glenn, we had some tough decisions to make on that alone.
With that, here were the three toughest cuts from our final roster projection
Smith did little to convince the team to keep him around this offseason. He did not flash in the preseason nor much at all in training camp. What this comes down to is draft status.

The Kansas City Royals' nine-game winning streak came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Toronto, but Jacob Milham and Jeremy Greco frame it as a strong stretch rather than any kind of collapse. Bobby Witt Jr. stays in the AL MVP conversation, though the offensive edge right now still points toward Yordan Alvarez. Jac Caglianone's struggles since returning from injury spark a broader conversation about rhythm and confidence, and how much weight a rough game or two should actually carry.
The roster continues to churn. Michael Massey has gone on the seven-day concussion list after a scary-looking play, and Mason Black has been optioned to Triple-A Omaha. Josh Rojas is back for his third stint with Kansas City, and Anthony Gose has been selected after a strong stretch in Omaha and a long MLB career as both an outfielder and a pitcher. Beck Way's returned rehab ***** ignment reignites a heated critique of how the organization has handled player health this year, and Nick Mears' thoracic outlet syndrome diagnosis becomes another example of injuries taking far too long to sort out. The conversation turns pointed when Craig Kimbrel and the broader old-versus-young roster philosophy come up, with Jacob and Jeremy questioning whether Kansas City is leaning too hard on veterans who have no real bearing on the team's future.
The back half of the episode is dedicated to MLB's newly floated CBA proposal, and it is a thorough breakdown. A proposed $265 million cap on free-agent contracts, changes to Rule 5 draft eligibility, and earlier arbitration and free agency timing are all covered in detail. Jacob and Jeremy are particularly critical of the calendar-based offseason plan, arguing that manufactured transaction windows and a winter meetings quiet period would depress salaries and make the sport less interesting rather than more efficient. The very real possibility of a lockout when the current CBA expires in December 2026 closes out the discussion, along with a personal note on how a work stoppage would affect the people who depend on baseball's offseason calendar to network and find jobs in the industry.

NEW DELHI: Rishabh Pant continued his remarkable rise through India's Test record books on Monday, surpassing captain Shubman Gill to become the country's highest run-scorer in ICC World Test Championship history. Pant was unbeaten on 63 at lunch on the second day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo as India reached 419/6.

Pant now has 2,948 runs from 42 Tests in the World Test Championship, moving ahead of Gill's 2,917 from the same number of matches. Rohit Sharma is third among Indian batters with 2,716 runs from 40 Tests, followed by Ravindra Jadeja (2,675 from 50) and Virat Kohli (2,617 from 46). Among current Indian players, Yashasvi Jaiswal is next with 2,588 runs from 30 Tests.

The latest milestone came during a crucial partnership with Dhruv Jurel, who also reached his half-century. The pair had added an unbeaten 112 runs for the seventh wicket by lunch, helping India build a commanding first-innings total after losing six wickets.
Pant's latest achievement came on the back of another significant milestone earlier in the innings. The wicketkeeper-batter also moved past MS Dhoni to become India's highest run-scorer as a designated wicketkeeper in away or neutral Tests.

Pant crossed 2,500 runs in the category, edging beyond Dhoni's 2,496. He has done so at an average of almost 42, compared with Dhoni's 32.84.

Farokh Engineer is third on the list with 1,209 runs at an average of 32.67, while Syed Kirmani has 1,109 at 21.74 and Kiran More 901 at 29.06.

Pant's latest landmarks have come despite an injury scare on the opening day. He had retired hurt after being struck on the left arm by a short delivery from Sri Lanka pacer Lahiru ***** ara, having scored only three runs.
Pant returned on Day 2 after Sri Lanka dismissed debutant Saransh Jain for six and immediately helped India regain control alongside Jurel. The pair negotiated Sri Lanka's pace attack and took India beyond 400 before the lunch interval.

The total of 419/6 is only the 11th time a team has posted 400 or more in the first innings of a Test at this venue. Six of the previous 10 instances resulted in victories, while four ended in draws.

The century partnership between Pant and Jurel is also only the second time India have registered a 100-plus stand for the seventh wicket or lower in a Test in Sri Lanka. The previous instance came at the same venue in 2015, when Cheteshwar Pujara and Amit Mishra added 104.

Manchester City's new beginning arrives amid an unfamiliar sense of uncertainty. Bournemouth visit the Etihad Stadium today for Enzo Maresca's first Premier League match in charge, only a week after ***** nal exposed the scale of his rebuilding task.
The 3-0 Community Shield defeat in Cardiff was emphatic enough to strip away any illusion that this transition will be painless. City were too open through midfield, occasionally disjointed in defence and unable to establish the control that once defined them.
Bournemouth should offer a different examination, but they are unlikely to arrive merely to admire their surroundings. Having finished sixth last season, the visitors have earned the right to be regarded as more than accommodating opening-day opponents.
Maresca's immediate problem concerns Jeremy Doku. Arthur Ferridge's original team-news report, supplied as the source for this article, states that the Belgian suffered a calf injury during the Community Shield and is expected to miss at least two weeks.
"At the moment, the only one unavailable is Jeremy Doku," Maresca said at his pre-match press conference.

Over the entire history of MLB, fewer than 100 pitchers have struck out 2,000 batters in a career. Texas Rangers starter Jacob deGrom became the latest member of that elite club Thursday, hitting the milestone in the top of the first inning against the Washington Nationals.
DeGrom struck out Daylen Lile swinging to begin the game. He then struck out Abimelec Ortiz on five pitches, with a 92.6-mph slider sending the first baseman swinging to hit the milestone.
It marks a significant accomplishment for deGrom, who has been one of the most dominant pitchers in the game since his debut in 2014 with the New York Mets.
Despite never being listed as a top-100 prospect, deGrom exceeded all expectations early. As a rookie, he posted a 2.69 ERA over 140 1/3 innings, striking out 144 batters. That performance was good enough to earn him the National League Rookie of the Year award.
DeGrom continued to post excellent seasons with the Mets, but he really took his game up a level in 2018. That season, he led the majors with an astounding 1.70 ERA over 217 innings. His strikeout rate surged, helping earn him his first Cy Young award. DeGrom was similarly dominant in 2019, posting a 2.43 ERA over 204 innings and leading baseball with 255 strikeouts. That performance earned him back-to-back Cy Youngs.

On the field, former Baltimore Orioles outfielder Trey Mancini did a lot worth celebrating. After finishing as runner-up for the Rookie of the Year award, Mancini went on to post three more seasons with an above-average wRC+. He also helped the Houston Astros win a World Series in 2022.
But Mancini's biggest accomplishment in the sport had little to do with his on-field production. Following his best season in the majors — in which he hit 35 home runs and somehow didn't make the All-Star team — Mancini announced he was diagnosed with colon cancer. He missed the entire 2020 MLB season while in recovery.
Later that year, he announced he was cancer-free and returned to play four more seasons in MLB.
After a few at-bats with the Los Angeles Angels this season, however, Mancini officially decided to hang up his cleats Tuesday. He announced his decision on Instagram, making sure to pay special tribute to Orioles fans.
In his note, Mancini thanked fans, his family, his wife and daughter, teammates, coaches and — most notably — athletic trainers and doctors.

Saturday's game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs brought answers and left us with some significant questions.
There remain two exhibition games to collect information ahead of the page turning to the regular season. If searching for answers to the leftover burning questions, these are the areas I would start:
Despite watching Xavier Smith quite literally fumble away the NFC Championship game last season, he returns as LA's primary punt returner. The Rams had all offseason to either bring in competition or consider alternatives. Instead, they seem ready to run it back with Smith.
But why? Smith brings little upside to the return role, even if he did break a longer return for one of the most important plays in Saturday's game in KC. Can the Rams maximize a roster spot by identifying a player who can contribute more as a returner and elsewhere?
I'd start with receiver Brennan Presley, who played well in the 2025 exhibition games and then led the Rams in receiving yards against the Chiefs. Presley has a similarly sized frame and close skillset to Smith. He seems to be a more productive receiver and the team risks nothing by experimenting with him as a punt returner. Presley already returned kicks in the preseason opener. Push his limits and see what he is capable of.

Pat ******* mins' captaincy record took an unwanted turn after Australia suffered a nine-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in the first Test at the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin on Sunday.

The match ended inside four days, with Australia conceding a 228-run first-innings lead before setting Bangladesh only 57 runs to win in the fourth innings. The visitors reached the target in 14.2 overs, losing just one wicket.

The defeat was Australia's first-ever home Test loss against Bangladesh and also added ******* mins to an unwanted list.

Cummins, who has been Australia's Test captain since the 2021-22 Ashes, became only the second Australian captain after Greg Chappell to lose home Tests against two different Asian teams.

Chappell lost two home Tests against Pakistan — in Sydney in January 1977 and Melbourne in December 1981 — and another against India in Melbourne in February 1981.

Cummins has now lost one home Test against India, in Perth in November 2024, and one against Bangladesh in Darwin in August 2026.

Bangladesh needed only three Tests to record their first Test win in Australia. They are now the fastest Asian team and the second-fastest team overall to win a Test on Australian soil.

Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud played a key role in the victory, taking nine wickets across the match to claim the Player of the Match award. He picked up six wickets in Australia's first innings and three in the second.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz also contributed with both bat and ball. He scored a half-century in the first innings before taking five wickets in the second.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 84 in the first innings, while opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim made 101 off 197 ******* .

For Australia, Josh Hazlewood took six wickets in the first innings, while Cameron Green scored 104 in the second innings. However, the rest of the Australian side could not make enough of an impact as Bangladesh completed their first Test victory in Australia.
