ATLANTA − Tennessee football fans traveled in force to cheer on the Vols in a Week 2 game against Georgia Tech on Sept. 12 at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Large sections of fans wearing orange were visible among the light gold and white shirts that Yellow Jackets fans were sporting. And the No. 18 Vols received a loud reception when they took the field for final warmups.
"We're only about three hours away from Knoxville. It seems like half of Neyland Stadium made the drive," ESPN play-by-play announcer Bob Wischusen said during the broadcast.
While the Georgia Tech band performed the national anthem, UT fans occupied most of the east side of the stadium. A large contingent of Vols vans were also in the second deck of the north endzone.
There were spots of orange and white spread in every section of Bobby Dodd Stadium save for the Georgia Tech student section.

Tennessee football fell behind in the first quarter of its game at Georgia Tech on Sept. 12 when a punt was blocked and returned for a touchdown at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta.
On fourth-and-11 from the Vols' 24-yard line, fifth-year punter Jackson Ross hesitated before stepping into his punt. Georgia Tech's Trae Stevenson Jr. took advantage of the extra moment and rushed Ross, blocking his kick.

The ball rolled around near Tennessee's goal line before it was scooped up by Elgin Sessions for a Yellow Jackets touchdown, putting them up 7-3 with 5:49 left in the first quarter.
It was the second straight week Georgia Tech scored a special teams touchdown after returning a kickoff for a score against Colorado in Week 1.

ATLANTA — Tennessee freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon will try for a strong sequel to his debut in leading the 18th-ranked Vols against Georgia Tech.
Tennessee (1-0) and Georgia Tech (0-1) play Sept. 12 (7 p.m. ET, ESPN) at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
It's a good road test, especially for Brandon, who accounted for five touchdowns in 56-9 win over Furman at home. And defensive coordinator Jim Knowles will dig deeper into his scheme to stop the Yellow Jackets.
The Vols will get a boost from the return of All-SEC linebacker Arion Carter and starting center Sam Pendleton, who were suspended for the Furman game.
Carter was suspended by the NCAA because he accepted a $427 flight from his agent to an NFL pre-draft training facility, whice he repaid. Pendleton was suspended by Tennessee for violation of team rules because he was arrested in May on charges of driving under the influence.

ATLANTA — A flash flood warning has been issued for the area around Bobby Dodd Stadium, where No. 18 Tennessee will play Georgia Tech on Sept. 12.
The warning is in effect until 1:30 p.m. ET, but rain is the forecast throughout the afternoon and early evening. The game starts at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Heavy rains have fallen throughout the morning, and the forecast calls for them to continue until close to kickoff or perhaps early into the game.
The chance of rain will decrease to 10% at kickoff with a projected temperature of 80 degrees. Skies are supposed to clear out by halftime.
That should make for more favorable conditions for fans, including those traveling from Tennessee for the road game. The nonconference game is sold out at Bobby Dodd Stadium, which has a capacity of 51,913.

The Colorado Buffaloes got the ending they needed Thursday night, even if the route to it was about as uncomfortable as any season opener can get.
Julian Lewis found Charlie Williams on a 20-yard touchdown pass with 37 seconds left, then Colorado's field-goal block by defensive back Boo Carter closed the door at the horn for a 14-13 win over Georgia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The Buffaloes were out of timeouts and down six points when they started the final possession at their own 25-yard line, which made the finish feel larger than a typical Week 1 play.
Lewis had not found much consistency through the air before that drive. Colorado had dropped passes, missed downfield opportunities and left yards on the field during a first half in which both teams struggled with the humid conditions. The freshman quarterback had a rough sequence late in the second quarter, losing his grip on the football before recovering it and taking a 15-yard sack. Colorado followed with three incompletions before punting to close the half.
Georgia Tech held a 10-7 lead at that point, and the game never settled into a normal rhythm after halftime. Colorado's rushing attack gave the Buffs control of the ball, but Georgia Tech stayed close because Colorado could not finish possessions.
When Georgia Tech's Aidan Birr hit a 29-yard field goal with 1:40 remaining, Colorado had one last chance and Lewis took it.

The Colorado Buffaloes and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will meet for only the second time Thursday night. However, their shared football history reaches much deeper than last season's opener at Folsom Field.
The Yellow Jackets won the 2025 matchup, 27-20, after quarterback Haynes King rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns. His 45-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter snapped a 20-20 tie and gave Georgia Tech a 1-0 lead in the series.
Tonight's rematch at Bobby Dodd Stadium brings Colorado back to Atlanta for a game loaded with new players, but one old argument remains close by: the 1990 national championship.
Colorado and Georgia Tech did not play in 1990, yet both programs still claim a share of that season's national championship.
Bill McCartney's Colorado team finished 11-1-1, survived the famous "Fifth Down" game at Missouri and defeated Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl. The Buffaloes finished No. 1 in the AP Poll, earning the program's first national ****** le.

Deion Sanders begins Year 4 at Colorado in the city where he became a legend, as the Buffaloes face Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Thursday.
Sanders played for the Falcons and Braves in the early 1990s, a rare two-sport star in the pros, and remains an iconic figure in Atlanta sports history. Though his legacy could earn him a warm welcome at Bobby Dodd Stadium, that nostalgia won't do much for the Buffs as they try to bounce back from a 3-9 season.
Second-year quarterback Julian Lewis, who starred down the road at Carrollton High School, will lead a Colorado offense that loaded up with transfers in the offseason. That includes receivers Kam Perry (Miami Ohio), DeAndre Moore Jr. (Texas) and Danny Scudero (San Jose State), who are among 43 transfers on the roster.
Speaking of transfers, the Yellow Jackets will roll out a high-profile pair in QB Alberto Mendoza, late of Indiana and brother of the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner, and former Michigan and Alabama running back Justice Haynes, who grew up in suburban Atlanta. Whatever happens there, things figure to look quite a bit different for Tech after Haynes King held down the QB position the last three years.

Tennessee football won eight games in 2025, marking the first time it had failed to reach nine victories in a season since Josh Heupel was named coach of the Vols in 2021.
The Vols are set to face four ranked teams this season and a new nine-game SEC schedule while breaking in a freshman quarterback, so reestablishing the nine-win floor Heupel had set for this program won't be easy.
Here are the three games that will define the season for Tennessee football in 2026.
On paper and in the polls, UT looks like the better team and a likely favorite to knock off the Yellow Jackets, even on the road. But first-year quarterback Faizon Brandon will still be an unknown commodity by the time the Vols arrive in Atlanta for their second game.
The Vols host FCS foe Furman in the season opener on Sept. 5 (3:30 p.m., SEC Network+, ESPN+). and Brandon shouldn't expect to meet much resistance, nor to play four full quarters in that game. The SEC slate that follows promises to be tougher to navigate, but how Brandon reacts to a road environment at Bobby Dodd Stadium will say a lot about how truly ready he is to lead UT for the remainder of the season.

In the midst of a slump, especially at the plate, the Braves were hoping that Tyler Mahle could delicer another strong start to help the Braves tie up the series in Minneapolis.
There were 5 batted ****** over 100 MPH across both teams in the first inning, but two of the three against Mahle produced two runs, on a loud Jeffers double and a mammoth Bell homer. After that, Mahle generally struggled to miss bats, but didn't give up much loud contact and was extremely efficient, needing only 76 pitches to complete 6.2 innings, keeping the Twins at just the 2 runs with a little help from Dylan Dodd to strand a batter in the seventh. Only 3 strikeouts and 8 whiffs are well off of Mahle's previous two outings, but
The offense was characteristically quiet with very few baserunners until a Drake Baldwin homer broke the shutout in the sixth.
Harris and Albies singled with two outs in the frame as well, but the Braves were unable to tie up the game, as the Twins went to their bullpen. The offense had nothing going in the seventh or eighth and Dylan Dodd gave way to Didier Fuentes in the eighth with a runner on first. Didier left a couple of pitches over the heart of the plate and the Twins took them for a single and a double, tacking on a big two insurance runs for a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth. Michael Harris led off the ninth with a double, but the Braves were unable to do anything else in the inning.
This continues a string of games during which the offense has generally not been good enough. Other than Matt Olson, none of their hitters are performing particularly up to their standards at the moment and the team is just not playing well. They built quite a cushion early in the season, but this next stretch of games is one that could turn that around quickly if they don't step it up. Join us tomorrow at 1:40 PM ET, as the Braves look to salvage this series in the first of four consecutive day games.

Guernsey FC maintained their unbeaten start to their Southern Combination Premier Division season as they twice came from a goal down to draw 2-2 at Crawley Down Gatwick.
The hosts took a seventh-minute lead when Will Harley curled past Seb Sheppard after some neat passing following a counter-attack down the right.
James Laws went close to doubling the lead 25 minutes later before Will Fazakerley and Callum Le Lacheur had chances for the Green Lions as they went into the break a goal down.
But the visitors levelled six minutes after the break as Sam Murray nodded on Charlton Gauvain's cross from the right and Jamie Dodd was able to bundle the ball home at the far post.
The hosts were back in front just four minutes later as Archie Drillot's weak back-pass was picked up by Harley and substitute Callum Kilkenny finished well moments after coming on.

According to their ***** istant general manager Ed Dodds, the Indianapolis Colts currently plan on keeping backup quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr., as they intend on keeping three quarterbacks and aren't wanting to detract from their current team (via The Athletic's James Boyd).
Now, if the Colts had gotten meaningful trade value back in a swap for Richardson Sr., who requested a trade earlier this offseason, then he would realistically be elsewhere right now to that generous suitor. That being said, such a trade doesn't appear to have materialized, and while a significant quarterback injury could certainly happen, most teams already have their backup quarterback plans in place entering the second week of preseason.
Colts longtime general manager Chris Ballard indicated earlier this offseason that the Colts weren't simply going to give away Richardson Sr., still believing he has value and upside. To be fair too, their starting quarterback Daniel Jones is coming off a late season torn Achilles and hasn't exactly been an 'NFL ironman' himself, even dating back to his days as a former franchise quarterback hopeful with the New York Giants.
While he clearly started out rusty, Richardson Sr. actually progressed nicely in his 2026 preseason debut, completing 11 of 14 pass attempts for 145 passing yards and an interception (*which should've been caught) to go along with his 53 total rushing yards and rushing touchdown on 6 carries against the New England Patriots. It was that dynamic rushing ability which doesn't play out as well in Colts camp, but was on full display in this past Thursday night's exhibition game.
In contrast, 2nd-year quarterback Riley Leonard, who is Richardson's competition for the Colts QB2 job behind Jones, had a fairly rough preseason showing in relief during the second half—and with only 1 career start under his belt, could arguably use a bit more seasoning before being anointed Indy's primary backup quarterback.

ATLANTA (AP) — Bryce Elder pitched one-hit ball over seven innings, Drake Baldwin drove in two runs and the Atlanta Braves won their season-high seventh in a row, beating the Miami Marlins 4-1 on Wednesday night.
Elder (8-6) turned in another excellent start after a tough June, surrendering his lone hit on a fifth-inning liner to left that Jakob Marsee hustled into a double. Owen Caissie, who had walked, raced to third and scored on Joe Mack's groundout.
That was it against Elder, who is 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA over his last four starts. Didier Fuentes got the final four outs for his second career save after Dylan Dodd allowed a pair of singles in the eighth.
Baldwin capped a three-run second inning against Eury Pérez (5-9) with a two-out single to center that brought home a pair of runners. Austin Riley drove in the first run of the night with a ground-rule double.
Mauricio Dubón sent home Atlanta's other run with his 600th career hit. The RBI single came after a bizarre play in which Michael Harris' apparent steal of third was nullified when Mack's throw ricocheted off Dubón's helmet and flew into the stands, resulting in an interference call on the hitter.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — The 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hit his first international half-century for India as Zimbabwe was comfortably beaten by seven wickets in a Twenty20 on Thursday.
Sooryavanshi scored 50 off 18 ***** . He was out next ball at 68-2, top-edging an attempted cut at Richard Ngarava.
But the teenager had turned the chase of 126 into a doddle and Shreyas Iyer was in the middle at 126-3 to celebrate his first win as captain in eight T20s. Zimbabwe made 125-7 after Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav took two wickets each.
Sooryavanshi replaced Sachin Tendulkar this month as the youngest player to represent India but his output in the T20 series in England was modest: 14, 13, 15 at a strike rate of 168. He was replaced for the last match and India lost the series 4-0.
The selectors hoped Sooryavanshi would thrive in a low-key series at the same cricket ground where he blasted 175 off 80 ***** against England in February in the final of the Under-19 World Cup.

In a game that first crawled due to a deluge of walks (but few runs) and then saw dueling late-inning paroxysms in each team’s final time at the plate, the Braves eventually emerged victorious. But boy, was it a winding path to get there.
At the beginning of this contest, things seemed like they were going to drag on forever with little to show for it. After a one-walk, no other action first from Martin Perez, the Braves took aim at Michael King, who dominated them a few weeks ago in San Diego, and…
…he did not dominate this time. In fact, King walked the first three batters he faced, grimacing and looking generally uncomfy all the while. A groundout from Michael Harris II plated a run, but both Austin Riley and Mike Yastrzemski kind of lost the plot and went down looking. Yastrzemski, in particular, looked at five straight pitches to end the inning… the Braves’ track record with guys skimping on rehab **** ignments this year is looking abysmal.
Staked to a small lead, Perez did his normal thing — it just happened to work out this time. He walked two in the second, but then recovered with two punchouts. The Braves got a couple of singles against a resurgent-ish King in the bottom of the inning, but Ozzie Albies struck out on a changeup that was literally in the other batter’s box. There was another walk from Perez, this time of the leadoff variety, in the third, but nothing else. King followed suit, but again, nothing doing from the bats. Perez had a quicker fourth, three up and three down thanks to a double play. Meanwhile, the Braves kinda-sorta tried to rally against King with a leadoff double from Mauricio Dubon and an infield single by Brewer Hicklen, but two weak flyouts kept it a 1-0 game.
Some combination of “Perez didn’t have a rehab **** ignment and had thrown 75 pitches” and “Perez had a 3/4 K/BB ratio in four innings” ultimately convinced the Braves to go to the bullpen for the fifth. Dylan Dodd came in and was delicious, throwing an 11-pitch frame with two strikeouts and a first-pitch groundout. King stayed in, and worked around a two-out single. Didier Fuentes followed Dodd and had to work a little harder (18 pitches), but had his two strikeouts, one groundout inning all the same. King’s night finished with a flourish, a nine-pitch frame that featured a strikeout of Hicklen. He rebounded and once again mystified the Braves despite the rocky start, with a 7/4 K/BB ratio — a 7/1 K/BB ratio after the first three batters.

Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables received national recognition on Friday when he was named to the Dodd Trophy preseason watch list ahead of the 2026 season. The university announced that Venables is among the coaches being considered for one of college football's most respected coaching honors.
The award is named in honor of legendary Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets head coach Bobby Dodd. Established in 1976, the award recognizes an FBS coach whose program embodies three core principles: scholarship, leadership and integrity. The award goes beyond on-field success, recognizing coaches who prioritize academic achievement, community involvement and developing players beyond football.
Past winners include notable coaches such as Indiana Hoosiers' Curt Cignetti, Notre Dame Fighting Irish's Marcus Freeman, Alabama Crimson Tide's Nick Saban and Kansas State Wildcats' Bill Snyder. The only time an Oklahoma head coach has won the award was in 2003, when Bob Stoops received the honor.
Everything the Dodd Trophy recognizes is exactly how Venables has wanted to develop his teams. Venables has consistently emphasized that success is measured not only by wins and losses but also by the development of his players as people.
That's a big reason he started the SOUL Mission when he took over. Venables has spent the last four seasons rebuilding Oklahoma's culture. While the results on the field will ultimately determine his candidacy, his commitment to leadership, academics and player development makes him a natural fit for what the Dodd Trophy represents. If Oklahoma competes for championships in 2026, Venables could add another major honor to his growing résumé.

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman was recently named to the preseason Dodd Award watch list, as he's viewed as one of the best in college.
ESPN backed that up, as it recently ranked the top head coaches in college. There were just three others ranked ahead of Freeman: Indiana's Curt Cignetti, Georgia's Kirby Smart and Ohio State's Ryan Day. It's hard to argue with his placement on the list, as the three above him have each won at least one national championship, but that could be changing this fall.
Freeman has a team that is built for a deep run in the College Football Playoff, which could see him making a jump on this list after the season concludes. ESPN's rationale for ranking him inside the top-4 is fairly simple, all the winning. Freeman has the most bowl wins among FBS head coaches since 2022 with five, along with joining the Hoosiers in having a 10-game winning streak in each of the last two years.
Max Olson explained why he ranked Freeman No. 6, saying the margin between him Oregon's Dan Lanning and Texas' Steve Sarkisian is extremely close. He gave both of them an advantage due to their teams changing conferences and still winning.
Regardless of where Freeman ranked according to Olson, it's pretty obvious that he's one of the top coaches in all of college football.

Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning has long been considered one of the best college football coaches in the nation, and that was borne out on Thursday. The Dodd Trophy released its preseason watch list for the 2026 season, and Lanning was listed as a coach to keep an eye on.
20 coaches in total were named to the list, including some heavy hitters like Georgia's Kirby Smart, Texas' Steve Sarkisian, Ohio State's Ryan Day, Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman, and Texas A&M's Mike Elko.
"The Dodd Trophy, college football's most coveted national coaching award, celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity– the three pillars of legendary coach Bobby Dodd's coaching philosophy," The Dodd Trophy wrote in a release. "The award was established to honor the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division 1A) head football coach whose program represents the highest ideals on and off the field."
In his four seasons at Oregon, Lanning is 48-8 at Oregon, with two trips to the College Football Playoff and a Big Ten Championship victory in 2024. Going into the new season, Oregon is expected to have one of the most talented rosters in the nation, and the best of the Lanning era.
While the Ducks have been a great regular-season team over the past few years, they've at times struggled in the postseason, so that will be the biggest test for Lanning to overcome this upcoming season.

Former India and Karnataka fast bowler Dodda Ganesh has criticised the Indian team management, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir, for resting KL Rahul during the third and final ODI against Afghanistan at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Rahul, who featured in the first two matches of the three-game series, was left out of the playing XI for the final ODI despite having spent very little time in the middle. The wicketkeeper-batter faced 19 ******* in the series opener, remaining unbeaten on 39 as India secured a seven-wicket win in a rain-curtailed contest. He was then dismissed for a first-ball duck in the second ODI in Lucknow.

With Rahul rested, Ishan Kishan took over wicketkeeping duties in Chennai. However, Kishan did not get an opportunity to bat as India comfortably chased down Afghanistan's total to seal a 3-0 series sweep.

Ganesh questioned the logic behind the decision and took to X to express his frustration.
“KL Rahul didn’t need this rest. He’s played only 20 ******* in the series. Absolutely makes zero sense,” Ganesh wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

India, however, continued their dominant run in the series. Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna starred with a maiden five-wicket haul, returning figures of 5-23 in nine overs, as Afghanistan were bowled out for 218 in 44.2 overs despite captain Hashmatullah Shahidi scoring a fighting 102.

Chasing 219, India made light work of the target through a commanding opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The duo added 170 runs for the first wicket, with Rohit scoring 79 before falling to Mohammad Nabi.

Jaiswal carried on and produced a superb unbeaten 110 off 86 ******* , his second ODI century in just three innings. Shreyas Iyer provided support at the other end as India completed the chase with 128 ******* to spare and secured a nine-wicket victory.

The result also handed India their first ODI series win under captain Shubman Gill, who led from the front in the field with two direct-hit run-outs during Afghanistan's innings.
