A question has bedeviled a wealthy Lake Tahoe enclave for years: Who is poisoning the towering trees that stand sentry on the North Shore?
Residents of Incline Village, Nev., hope a $147,000 reward will generate some answers.
"It's the most appalling, selfish thing that anyone could do, especially for trees that are irreplaceable," said Chris Nolet, a retired certified public accountant and consultant to the biotechnology industry who ***** embled a small group of private donors known as Friends of Burnt Cedar Beach to put up the bulk of the reward. "These trees are 100 years old."
The donors are offering $122,000 for information leading to the successful prosecution of anyone responsible. The Incline Village General Improvement District, which owns and manages the residents-only beach where the poisonings took place, has put up another $25,000 and installed additional cameras around the trees.
The move came after an investigation failed to generate actionable leads, Nolet said.

Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ:MAR)'s Middle East business showed a meaningful improvement in July, with revenue per available room (RevPAR) declining 12% year over year, a sharp improvement from the 43% decline in the second quarter. The improvement came despite continued regional conflict, suggesting that demand is proving more resilient than initially feared. More importantly, Marriott's global business remains strong: global room revenue increased 7% in July, with the U.S. and Canada up 8%.
However, the Middle East remains a risk to Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ:MAR)'s growth strategy. The region represents only about 3% of Marriott's global fees but 6% of its development pipeline, meaning prolonged conflict can have an outsized impact on future hotel openings. Supply-chain disruptions and restricted capital flows have already delayed projects, pushing Marriott toward the lower end of its full-year net unit growth target.
The biggest positive is that the Middle East headwind appears to be easing faster than expected. Moving from a 43% RevPAR decline in the second quarter to just 12% in July suggests travel demand can recover even as geopolitical risks remain elevated. If the conflict stabilizes, Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ:MAR) could see a relatively quick rebound in regional occupancy and room rates.
More importantly, the Middle East is not large enough to overwhelm Marriott's broader global performance. The company generated a 7% increase in global room revenue in July, while U.S. and Canadian room revenue rose 8%. RevPAR growth was also broad-based across luxury, premium/select and mid-scale brands, suggesting that Marriott's strength is not dependent solely on wealthy travelers.
Marriott also benefits from an ***** et-light, fee-driven model, meaning stronger hotel demand can translate into attractive cash generation without requiring the company to own most of the underlying properties. Barron's has highlighted the resilience of this model, alongside the strength of Marriott Bonvoy and additional growth opportunities from its credit-card partnerships.

WASHINGTON, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Three U.S. lawmakers have called on the American government to blacklist a set of Indian IT firms over what they describe as "more than fifteen years of targeted espionage against U.S. citizens, businesses, and the lawyers representing them."
In a letter issued Wednesday, Democratic Senators Ron Wyden and Sheldon Whitehouse, along with Republican Representative Pat Harrigan, asked the Commerce Department to add BellTroX, CyberRoot, and Sunkissed Organic Farms Pvt. Ltd. (formerly known as "Appin Technology Pvt. Ltd.") and its subsidiaries, to the Commerce Department's Entity List. Such a designation would cut them off from U.S. software, cloud infrastructure, and cybersecurity tools.
Sunkissed representatives, CyberRoot and the Commerce Department did not respond to requests for comment. BellTroX could not be reached for comment.
All three companies have been described in media coverage and in reports published by major tech firms as being fronts for hack-for-hire activities.
In 2022, Reuters named CyberRoot and BellTroX as key players in the cybermercenary industry, saying they were frequently tapped by Western lawyers and private investigators to spy on one another during legal and business disputes. A 2023 Reuters report identified Appin as a pioneer in the field, saying the company grew from an educational startup to a hack-for-hire powerhouse that stole secrets from executives, politicians, military officials and wealthy elites around the globe.

President Donald Trump pledged Wednesday to send every American adult $5,000 if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections, an extraordinary gambit to reverse his party's sagging fortunes in November.
The dubious promise would most likely cost more than $1 trillion and require congressional approval, and would further exacerbate the country's nearly $1.8 trillion annual budget deficit and concerns about inflation.
"If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000," Trump said during the GOP's midterm convention in Dallas. "It will be called the Trump Dividend."
He likened the payments to a corporation's distributions to shareholders, citing "our tremendous strength and success economically."
Within an hour, Vice President JD Vance appeared to try to walk back Trump's proposal — at least in part — by suggesting the dividend payments would not go to the wealthy. Vance suggested it could be paid for by U.S. tariff revenues, though the suggested payment dwarfs what the U.S. has taken in through the protectionist measures.

Bloomberg reported on August 25, 2026, that BlackRock, Inc. (NYSE:BLK) cut the minimum size for converting large Bitcoin holdings directly into shares of its iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF to $1 million in July, down from $25 million when the in-kind conversion process first became available. The fund has facilitated more than $5 billion of these conversions, up from more than $3 billion when Bloomberg first reported on the trend in October, according to Robbie Mitchnick, BlackRock's head of digital ******* ets. The process, which can take more than a week, lets holders move Bitcoin from private wallets into a regulated fund structure while retaining price exposure. Mitchnick said "kidnappings, ransom demands, and custody failures" motivate some holders to make the switch. Rival issuer Bitwise has cut its own minimum even further, from $100 million to $3 million, Bloomberg reported.
This is a fast-scaling new source of fee-generating ******* ets for BlackRock, Inc. (NYSE:BLK). The $5 billion processed through IBIT is up from $3 billion just months earlier. It shows accelerating adoption of a service that pulls previously self-custodied Bitcoin wealth directly into BlackRock's ******* et base rather than competing for ******* ets already inside the traditional financial system.
Cutting the minimum by 96% meaningfully widens who can use the service. Dropping the threshold from $25 million to $1 million brings the option within reach of family offices and wealthy individual holders, rather than limiting it to the largest Bitcoin holders. That gives BlackRock access to a substantially larger pool of potential conversions as the practice becomes more common.
IBIT's scale gives it a head start in capturing this migration. The fund already holds roughly 3.645% of Bitcoin's total supply and lists net ******* ets of $60.65 billion. It is scale advantage that likely makes it the default destination for holders deciding where to move their coins, reinforcing BlackRock's position as conversions boost industry-wide.
The process remains manual and slow despite the lower headline minimum. Bitwise chief investment officer Matt Hougan said the conversion process industry-wide is "still bespoke, from introducing a client to a market maker to working with the adviser, but it's becoming more standardized," and Mitchnick himself said conversions can take more than a week. That means BlackRock, Inc. (NYSE:BLK) has not yet turned this into a fully automated, scalable pipeline even as it markets lower minimums to a broader audience.

Institutional investors are beginning to allocate capital to "evergreen" private market funds that Blackstone Inc. (NYSE:BX) and KKR & Co. Inc. (NYSE:KKR) originally built for wealthy individuals, the Financial Times reported.
Evergreen funds let investors access capital at set intervals rather than locking it up for a decade-long private equity fund life. Blackstone's wealth business has seen institutions begin allocating to its evergreen products, though they currently make up "only a small proportion of the capital raised," said Joan Solotar, who leads that business. KKR has separately raised the share of deals its evergreen K-Series funds can take from a longstanding 7.5% cap to as much as 20% in some cases, the FT reported.
Institutional investors are validating years of investment by Blackstone Inc. (NYSE:BX) and KKR & Co. Inc. (NYSE:KKR) in wealth-focused products. Both firms, along with Apollo, have expanded evergreen vehicles for individual investors, and institutions now choosing these funds provide another source of sophisticated capital for the products. That adoption could help Blackstone and KKR expand their wealth-management businesses beyond traditional individual investors.
KKR's renegotiated deal-allocation terms provide another sign of growing demand for its evergreen funds. KKR & Co. Inc. (NYSE:KKR) increased the co-investment cap for its K-Series funds from 7.5% to as much as 20% in vehicles such as its $8 billion European Fund VI. The larger allocation gives KKR's wealth-focused funds access to more investment opportunities and could help the company grow ****** ets and fee revenue from this channel.
Evergreen structures solve a current problem for institutional investors, not just individuals. Many institutions have grown more cautious about committing to traditional private equity as managers have struggled to exit investments and return capital. Evergreen funds' greater liquidity gives institutions an alternative way to stay invested without that same lockup risk.

BRASILIA, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Brazil's wealthiest captured a record share of national income under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, tax-return data show, offering a striking counterpoint to the leftist leader's effort to convince voters that gains have been widely shared under his administration as he seeks reelection in October.
Lula has pointed to falling inequality, as measured by a record-low Gini coefficient in 2024, and rising employment as evidence that his administration prioritizes poorer Brazilians.
But tax-return data paint a more complex picture: high interest rates, partly a consequence of increased government spending, fueled a boom in financial income that disproportionately benefited the wealthy, even as stronger labor markets, wage gains, and social programs improved conditions at the bottom of the income distribution.
"If government benefits, on the one hand, are well targeted, they can have a positive social impact," said Otaviano Canuto, a former World Bank vice president.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Russian economy runs a risk of going "berserk" if it is run to focus entirely on the needs of the military-industrial complex, President Vladimir Putin's international development envoy was quoted as saying on Tuesday.
The comments by Boris ****** ov to business news outlet RBC were a rare sign of concern in Kremlin circles about the increasing pressure on the slowing economy to secure a victory in the 4-1/2-year war in Ukraine.

"Military and civilian economies have always existed in symbiosis everywhere. Many technical inventions that are useful for all originated within the military-industrial complex. The key lies in maintaining balance," ****** ov told RBC.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani repeatedly declined to distance himself from embattled New York City Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) co-chair Gustavo Gordillo, after being pressed on allegations that the DSA leader failed to pay thousands in rent on a Crown Heights apartment while his family spent a reported $1.4 million renovating the NYC townhouse where he lives—a contrast critics say is difficult to square with the anti-landlord, rent-abolitionist socialist housing agenda he helps champion.
Mamdani said Sunday that people working for a "more affordable life" and a "fairer life" for New Yorkers "should be welcomed into this work." When asked again Monday whether Gordillo should step down and whether he condemned allegations that Gordillo lied about his employment, the mayor said he welcomed anyone committed to making New York "a city that everyone can belong to." Meanwhile, asked directly whether he condemned Gordillo's alleged actions and lying, Mamdani ended the exchange: "Thank you very much."
Gordillo, an Ivy League graduate who as a NYC-DSA co-chair met weekly with Mamdani and his campaign manager as the group coordinated fundraising, field and communications efforts, later served on Mamdani's Economic Development & Workforce Development transition committee, according to public reporting.
He is named in a pending Brooklyn Housing Court case, in which a former landlord alleges Gordillo failed to pay $5,000 in rent on a $2,500-a-month Crown Heights apartment, while his family's townhouse was undergoing its $1.4 million in renovations, according to the New York Post. Gordillo's family reportedly bought the Bed-Stuy townhouse in 2019 for $935,000, while Gordillo's father has said it is for Gordillo and his brother to live in.

"Ain't nothing wrong with that," Sharpe said with a smirk. "Come on, man. You think the man cause he's worth a billion dollars he don't want to wet his whistle?"
Nightcap co-host Joe Johnson seemed rather disgusted by the thought of a wealthy person going to a trailer park with $140 for ******* . On the contrary, Chad Johnson claimed he was familiar with the area where York allegedly went to receive ******* ual favors, implying he has been there for similar reasons himself. Sharpe was eager to add, "sometimes you like them sleazy."
"They the ones that got all the moves," Sharpe insisted. "Remember I told you, 'She had more moves than a $100 hooker?' Them the ones that got the moves, the $5,000 ones don't do nothing but model."

Four years in, a bull market for US equities that followed the 2022 correction has started to attract some gloomy forecasts, largely because it's underpinned by an artificial intelligence wave that could easily be described as overvalued under multiple measures.
Recent remarks by billionaire Bridgewater **** ociates founder Ray Dalio warn of a potential liquidity crisis for investors and underscore the distinction between net worth and the kind of actual cash that could be needed in a market pullback.

For a man reportedly worth more than $10 billion, entrepreneur Mark Cuban spends a lot of time talking about wealth inequality—and how to distribute it more evenly.
The 'Shark Tank' star has long shared suggestions—and has enacted his plans—to better balance income throughout the U.S. economy. One of Cuban's ideas was to give employees company stock: he told a recent episode of the 'What It Takes' podcast that he awarded 330 employees at his media company, Broadcast.com, stock ahead of Yahoo's $5.7 billion acquisition of the company in 1999. Three hundred of those employees became millionaires as a result, he said.
Cuban also awarded equity and cash bonuses to employees of his first IT consulting company, MicroSolutions.
But the famed investor has now taken the suggestion a step further: If founders and CEOs don't seek to share the wealth generated by their companies with their employees, they should be forced to give back to society by paying higher corporate taxes.
Writing on X, the cofounder of online pharmacy Cost Plus Drugs, was asked what his plan would be to reduce wealth inequality across the country. He responded: "Increase the taxes of any company that doesn't offer equity to every employee on a pro rata basis to non-founder executives. If they get rich from the market, so do they.
"It's exactly what I have done for employees in companies I have started. Most wealthy people get that way from selling their companies or taking them public."
While Cuban proposes increased taxes as a motivator to get business leaders to share equity more broadly, a criticism of higher taxes (and tariffs, as consumers have learned the hard way) is that increases to company costs are often passed back to customers and ultimately the public. This represents a further stretch on budgets of consumers already dealing with above-target inflation, and without the boon of company stock to fall back on.

HONG KONG/SINGAPORE, Aug 20 (Reuters) - A growing campaign to tax offshore wealth is forcing wealthy Chinese people to rethink their trust structures and investment holdings, lawyers and advisers say, as Beijing sharpens its focus on capital outflows and rule enforcement amid growing fiscal strains.
In late July, authorities overhauled rules to impose a 20% income tax on offshore trusts, while tax offices in major cities like Beijing and Hangzhou have started to enforce taxation on returns from offshore insurance policies.
Those measures have triggered a scramble among some wealthy individuals to ***** s their liabilities, raise cash to meet them and revamp investment holdings. They have also fuelled concern that Beijing may widen its tax crackdown and scrutiny of offshore wealth.

In the United States, the average household net worth is $1,063,700, while the average net worth among 65- to 74-year-olds is $1,794,600. If this seems far higher than you expect, it's because wealthy people drive up the averages. The overall median net worth is much lower: $192,900 overall.
If you want a comfortable retirement, you may need to be closer to the average than the median, at least according to many Americans. In 2026, U.S. adults said they believe they need $1.46 million to retire comfortably.

King Charles's nephew, James, Earl of Wessex, has reportedly taken on an unusual summer job following his graduation from Radley College. Prince Edward and Sophie's son completed his studies at the prestigious school this summer and has now taken up a job at the Sandringham estate, according to a report.
According to The Sun, King Charles's nephew, James, Earl of Wessex, is doing a summer job at Sandringham, Norfolk, England. The 18-year-old has been spotted driving tractors on the royal property.
"Everyone is so used to only seeing James smartly turned out with his family at functions at Christmas and Easter, so I had to do a double-take," an estate worker stated. The individual continued, "He might be the King's nephew, but he is more than happy to get his hands dirty and muck in."
Moreover, the worker explained that "Driving tractors around Sandringham is not an easy task, and it can mean long hours." He also shared that "learning a good work ethic at a young age can always help," no matter how wealthy someone is.
The worker added, "The King is known for his fondness of the countryside." Thus, "he couldn't be prouder knowing the younger royals share his love." For the unaware, James's sister Lady Louise Windsor also took a part-time job during her summer break from university.

Kate Ferdinand has hit back at claims that she married Rio Ferdinand for his money, joking that anyone searching for an easy wealthy husband would hardly have chosen the complicated family situation she stepped into.
The former TOWIE star addressed the "gold digger" label during a Blended discussion with Rio and co-host Cilla Kessie. Kate pointed to the reality of becoming a stepmother to Rio's three children while they were still navigating the death of their mother, Rebecca Ellison.
"I always say if I wanted to pick a rich man I could have picked a lot easier one without all the kids," Kate said. She told Rio that she chose him because she loved him, while acknowledging that their relationship has included both rewarding and difficult periods.
Rio also reflected on how dramatically Kate's life changed after they became a couple. He admitted there have been times when he has wondered whether she would have had a far less complicated life without him and the family responsibilities that came with their relationship.
Kate directly addressed ******* umptions about Rio's wealth during the conversation. "People think I'm a gold digger, I'm with him for money," she said in comments also reported by The Sun.

LIV Golf 1.0 — the era of big talk and bigger paychecks — is over. Whatever comes next for the breakaway tour, cut loose by Saudi Arabian funding and now on the hunt for outside investment, the days of "Golf But Louder" are done.
Without a doubt, LIV fundamentally changed the structure of men's professional golf, forcing the PGA Tour into reworking its entire structure, schedule and financial model. LIV altered the professional arcs of some of the game's greatest players, gave others the opportunity to destroy their own reputations, and provided a pathway back to prominence for the once-lost Anthony Kim. LIV also brought the concept of sportswashing into the mainstream of the American sports conversation, forcing sports fans to decide just how much politics they were willing to accept with their sports.
That's a ****** of an impact in just a few short years, but that also leads into another LIV lesson: the impossibility of competing with the established American sports framework. Even a league funded by bottomless oil wealth ultimately couldn't compete with a vulnerable legacy organization.
So what does that mean? Competing with the PGA Tour is a lost cause for LIV, so coexistence is now the only path forward. And if LIV is going to survive and thrive in the years to come, version 2.0 will need to learn from the mistakes of its predecessor. And oh, are there plenty of lessons to learn.
LIV Golf fired off the tee in 2021 with swagger, attitude and arrogance, largely mirroring the personality of firebrand Greg Norman. Longtime PGA Tour antagonists like Norman and Phil Mickelson spoke openly (and in court filings) of wanting to upend the Tour's entire business model, torching the very house in which they'd grown wealthy. That didn't sit well with Tour traditionalists, and the badass playacting came off as more silly than intimidating. You're smacking a little white ball around a field, gentlemen. Let's not pretend this is armed combat.

Social media has recently been flooded with clips of pro athletes lamenting that their multimillion-dollar contracts don't go as far as people think. While such complaints can be easy to dunk on, the underlying point is important. The problem is the messenger.
The recent wave may have started with resurfaced clips of JJ Redick, one from February 2024 and another from March 2024, explaining how taxes and other costs can dramatically reduce a player's take-home pay.
"I think people should listen, because they're telling the truth," Chris Bosh recently told Front Office Sports. "And it's really interesting how people don't want to listen to that, but if I told you that player X is signing a three-year, $150 million deal, you'll believe it. It's not $150 million. That's what they're trying to get people to understand."
Financial advisors who work with athletes say the public often overestimates how wealthy professional athletes actually are, especially given taxes, short careers, and, in some cases, financial mismanagement.
"The general public ******* umption—which is that if you make it to the pros you are set for life—is far from true," says Perigon Wealth Management's head of sports and entertainment Marc Specht.

When you're at a modern wedding, it's typically just the bride who wears a white dress. However, when Catherine Middleton, Princess of Wales, married William, Prince of Wales, in 2011, her sister Pippa Middleton also (in)famously wore a white gown. The fit of the dress proved to be one of Pippa's most scandalous outfits. Some thought that the look drew focus from Kate's wedding dress, even with all its details, since Pippa's was an ivory-colored gown. But there's been a long tradition, rooted in superstition, of having the bridesmaid and maid of honor dresses match the bride's dress. It crosses cultures, and it's been in place for centuries. It has to do with preventing the bride from being stolen from her wedding.
"A bride would have attendants to protect her from evil spirits," Dr. Angela Thompson, who teaches sociology at Texas Christian University, told The New York Times. "By having several women who are dressed alike, the spirits, or kidnappers, wouldn't know which person was the bride." She also noted that this was a superstition that you can find in places like Rome and China, dating back thousands of years. So since the bride's dress is white, the bridesmaid dresses should also be white.

As for why royal wedding gowns, and therefore royal bridesmaid dresses, have been white in recent years, it goes back in large part to Queen Victoria's wedding to Prince Albert in 1840. Her white wedding dress — one of the many royal wedding dresses that hid a secret message — also helped popularize the trend for all brides to choose white for their wedding. She donned a white satin, silk, and lace gown with a full skirt. Before that, wealthy women had worn white dresses for their weddings, but colors like red were also popular, and less well-to-do women often wore a brown or black dress that was less likely to show stains so it could be reworn frequently.

The number of wealthy non-dom taxpayers shrank by 1,200 last year amid warnings that Labour's tax rises could push even more rich people offshore.
New figures from HMRC reveal that 9,000 non-doms – foreign investors living in Britain – left the country or changed their tax status in the financial year ending April 2025.
Meanwhile, the number of non-doms arriving in the country dropped 14pc to 8,600. A further 800 "deemed-domicile" taxpayers – former non-doms who have since become British tax residents – also quit the UK, for an overall net reduction of 1,200.
Leslie MacLeod-Miller, the chief executive of Foreign Investors for Britain, a pressure group, warned that government inaction could push more investors and entrepreneurs to leave, reducing their £13.6bn annual tax contribution to the public finances.
"Britain is losing internationally mobile wealth at an accelerating pace," he said. "The exodus of wealth will only get worse if the Government does not introduce a competitive tax regime to restore Britain's place in the world."
