Though rare, financial institutions do fail from time to time. In 2023, for example, banking giants Citizens Bank, Signature Bank, and Silicon Valley Bank all collapsed.
But what about credit unions? Though they're often considered "safer" than banks, credit unions can also fail — though the financial fallout is typically mild by comparison.
So far, in 2026, five banks have failed. In the same time period, three credit unions have failed. Let's take a closer look at why a credit union might fail, and what happens next.

Have you ever overdrafted your checking account or accidentally bounced a check? If so, a record of that mishap could be following you around.
When you have a problem managing a bank account, your bank usually reports the incident to a company called ChexSystems. And if you have negative information in your ChexSystems file, you might have trouble opening a new bank account within the next few years.
Chex Systems, Inc., or ChexSystems, is a company that collects information about your checking and savings account activity and **** embles it into a report. Your Consumer Disclosure Report, more commonly referred to as a ChexSystems report, has details of your past banking problems, including issues such as involuntarily closed accounts or unpaid bank fees. These items stay in your file for five years.
When you apply for a new bank account, most banks and credit unions pull your ChexSystems reports to learn about your banking history and determine if you're too risky to approve. If you have negative information on your file, you might find it difficult to open a new account.

Wednesday of reunions on the biggest stages and heroic feats on the smallest pitches. There is a club in Baku that still can't quite believe what it has just achieved.
Here are the five most important stories to start the day.
Mourinho takes his place on the Bernabéu bench tonight for the first time since June 1, 2013, when he left Real Madrid to both applause and whistles.
Time heals everything and turns it into legend, so today's reunion between the explosive Portuguese coach and what used to be his home will be an emotional one.
Barça have signed Livakovic for four million without yet knowing whether he will stay or go out on loan.

The Protect College Sports Act couldn't beat the clock.
And now uncertainty lingers around the bill's future.
The U.S. Senate adjourned for its annual five-week August recess early in the morning on Saturday without voting on legislation that intends to regulate college athletics, stiff-arming the bill for more crucial matters and kicking any possible vote to September — a move that troubles supporters.
While the legislation may take top priority once the Senate returns on Sept. 14, such a long break places the act in an uncomfortable position, making it susceptible to an increased onslaught of criticism from lawmakers, special interest groups and other entities.
For instance, as the bill inched toward a vote on the Senate floor this week, a wave of detractors emerged to disrupt the path. The Congressional Black Caucus released a statement slamming the bill on Thursday; more than a dozen Republican senators filed objections or amendments to the legislation; several labor unions sent a joint letter in opposition; and the Whip's vote count wasn't as high as originally expected.

On Friday, members of the Oregon women's basketball team filed a petition for union representation with the Oregon Employment Relations Board, marking the latest unionization effort in college sports—and the first based solely on public sector state labor laws.
The effort was led by the United College Athletes **** ociation, a 501(c)(5) labor union founded by former NCAA track athlete Andrew Cooper, which has been working to organize women's basketball specifically since 2024. While this is the first formal move toward unionization, the UCAA says it has more than 100 women's basketball players who have signed "unionization authorization cards."
The UCAA's advisory board includes current and former members of professional sports unions, including NWSLPA executive director Meghann Burke and WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike, as well as former National Labor Relations Board executives.
"We deserve a seat at the table, meaningful protections, fair compensation, and a collective bargaining agreement that raises the standard for everyone," Maryland women's basketball player Oluchi Okananwa, the interim president of the UCAA, said in a statement. "This work is bigger than any one season or generation. We are building lasting power for the athletes competing today and those who will come after us."
The news comes just several days after a separate organization, the College Football Players **** ociation, launched an organizing effort among football players at Stanford. Unlike the UCAA's effort, however, Stanford football players aren't filing for formal union authorization just yet—they're waiting for a more favorable political climate.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin appeals court on Wednesday restored a 2011 anti-union law that abolished collective bargaining rights, in a setback for unions and public workers. Unions are expected to appeal, sending the case to the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which is controlled by liberal justices.
The 2024 ruling striking down the law as unconstitutional had been on hold pending appeal, so Wednesday's reversal does not change the status quo. The law remains in effect, as it has been the past 15 years, as the legal fight continues.
Enactment of a 2011 anti-union state law, championed by Republicans, sparked weeks of protests and made Wisconsin the center of a national battle over union rights.
That law, known as Act 10, effectively ended most public employees′ ability to bargain for wage increases and other issues, and forced them to pay more for health insurance and retirement benefits.
Supporters of the law say it gives local governments more control over workers and the powers needed to cut costs. They argue that repealing the law, which allowed schools and local governments to raise money through higher employee contributions for benefits, would bankrupt those entities.

(Corrects which administration extended TPS for three countries in paragraph 10)
By Nate Raymond
BOSTON, July 21 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Tuesday temporarily blocked President Donald Trump's administration from stripping tens of thousands of asylum seekers and immigrants who have Temporary Protected Status of their ability to work in the United States.
U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton in Boston sided with a coalition of immigrant rights groups and labor unions that sued to block U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services from moving forward with a series of policies designed to implement new immigration-related restrictions enacted by Congress last year.
Gorton's order will be in place until he decides whether to issue a longer-term pause of the Trump administration's policy. The judge said he would rule on that by August 5. USCIS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
