Google on Friday disclosed the first known instance of its artificial intelligence software, Gemini, carrying out an undirected computer hack, weeks after similar disclosures by AI firms Anthropic and OpenAI raised security alarms about AI models going beyond the instructions of their human creators.
Google said in a statement that in May its AI model gained unauthorized access to three outside systems during a test by either guessing login information or using login credentials it found in a public repository.
Heather Adkins, a Google vice president for security engineering, said in the statement that the AI model thought that the outside computer systems “were part of the test,” but she said in all three instances, the model stopped before doing anything further with its access.
“In a standard evaluation, the model found public information online and guessed credentials to access websites it thought were part of the test,” she said.

He was the sole holdout on a 12-person jury who otherwise voted to acquit Lindsay Clancy of murdering her three children — frustrating the defense and causing a mistrial.
After seven days of deliberations, and with specific instructions from Judge William Sullivan to follow the letter of the law on reasonable doubt, the jury said it still had one holdout who refused to budge. A mistrial was declared on Sept. 4.
Now, the lone juror, named Michael Desronvil, has come forward to share his side of the story, saying that he "didn't have any doubts" that Clancy was criminally responsible for the killings.
In a statement shared with Yahoo on Sept. 18 by his attorney Edward Andrew Paltzik, Desronvil said: "I didn't have any doubts. As I tried to explain different possible theories during deliberation, I kept getting cut off as if I had doubts based on the evidence presented.
"Based on all the physical evidence, key witnesses, and what the prosecution presented, I thought it was enough proof that she (Clancy) knew exactly what she was doing and planned."

On August 13, a federal appeals court ruled in favor of Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD), upholding a preliminary injunction that bars the defendants from importing or facilitating the sale of foreign-market Gilead-branded medications in the US. The US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit found that the differences between Gilead's HIV medication for the US market and the foreign versions being imported were "material, not theoretical." The controversy began in December 2024 when Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) filed suit against a number of companies, including third-party administrator Meritain Health, pharmacy benefit manager ProAct, and pharmacies Rx Valet and Advanced Pharmacy, alleging illegal imports of its best-selling HIV drug Biktarvy.
The dispute dates back to December 2024, when Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) sued a group of companies, including third-party administrator Meritain Health, pharmacy benefit manager ProAct, and pharmacies Rx Valet and Advanced Pharmacy, alleging illegal imports of its top-selling HIV drug Biktarvy. The lawsuit arose from a specific instance in which a patient in Maryland received the medicine in the mail from Turkey, with label instructions written in Turkish.
A federal district court in Baltimore ruled in Gilead's favor and ordered a preliminary injunction, determining that the company was likely to succeed on its Lanham Act trademark violation and unfair competition arguments. As the case continued, the injunction was increased to include new sellers like CanaRx, ElectRx, and ScriptSourcing. The defendants filed an appeal with the Fourth Circuit, and the district judge declined to suspend the injunction while the appeal was pending, thus the import restriction has been in effect the entire time. The recent ruling maintains the order rather than overturning it.
In court documents, Rx Valet stated that the Turkish-sourced Biktarvy was chemically identical to the US version, which was offered at a significantly higher price. Meritain, for its part, said that it has never supported getting non-FDA-approved pharmaceuticals from outside the US and denies the claims, despite being named as a defendant.
The Fourth Circuit rejected the defendants' main argument that the imported and domestic versions of Biktarvy are interchangeable. The court's judgment that the two versions differ materially, not just in packaging or labeling, but also in the quality-control protocols that each version goes through before reaching a patient, challenges the basic argument that these alternative funding programs have used to support their business model.

No more trying to ******* emble linebacker depth charts like a Temu toy. We have three linebackers, two starting spots, four extra pieces and instructions that somehow skipped from Step 3 to Step 11.
The preseason is over. Put the tiny screwdriver down. It is time to see who actually stays on the field.
Over the last few weeks, we have tracked green dots, starter treatment, nickel packages, substitutions and enough linebacker rotations to make me question several life choices. Some situations became crystal clear. Others somehow became more confusing.
With Week 1 approaching, here is my final look at all 32 linebacker rooms, who I expect to stay on the field, and most importantly, who should wear the green dot.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly worried about daily school runs for their kids, Archie and Lilibet. Although the Sussexes returned to the UK on August 26, they have seemingly come back without securing taxpayer-funded security. It has understandably fueled concern for the anxious parents about their children's safety.
A close friend of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has reportedly voiced concern about daily school runs for their kids on the couple's behalf. A friend dished to The Telegraph: "It is absolutely the biggest area of concern. It creates the most dangers." Although the Sussexes returned to the UK on August 26, they have seemingly come back without securing taxpayer-funded security. It has understandably fuelled concern for the anxious parents about their children's safety.
According to the outlet, Archie and Lilibet's school has already been notified of their attendance. Not only that, teachers are already mandated to follow specific instructions. Additionally, the school is required to follow certain rules and procedures for maintaining the children's protection.
Meanwhile, Harry and Meghan are reportedly awaiting a definite response regarding their taxpayer-funded security from the UK's Home Office. According to the outlet, the couple would like to know if they are eligible for police protection now that they are residing in Britain. Notably, the Sussexes were previously denied protection rights during visits to the UK.
Scott Hamer, a former Metropolitan Police royalty and specialist protection officer, showed his support for the Duke of Sussex. He told the outlet: "If there is a credible threat to him and his family, it should be objectively ****** sed. If there is a genuine risk, the state should provide protection. If not, that's fine, but let him know."

SV Telfs 1-15 FC Red Bull Salzburg Women (H/T:1-6). Tore: Monz (16.) - Triendl (4.), D'Angelo (21.), Kobler (22., 39.), Pamminger (37., 57./pen), Plattner (45.), Schwarz (64., 73., 84., 88., 89.), Wienerroither (78., 81.), Grünwald (86.)
Our FC Red Bull Salzburg Women easily advanced to the round of 16 of the Austrian Women's Cup against third-division side SV Telfs. From the outset, Dusan Pavlovic's team left no doubt about the outcome of the match. After the Tyrolean side's surprising equaliser, five-goal scorer Magdalena Schwarz and her team-mates added more than a dozen goals. The draw for the next round will take place on September 10th, live on ÖFB TV from 14:00 CEST.
"This isn't an outing - our approach can be no different than for a top-of-the-table clash in the league." – coach Dusan Pavlovic's instructions were put into action by our team. Although the motivated hosts briefly equalized with a 30-yard wonderstrike - a clever chip from Monz over goalkeeper Annika Bräunlinger (16') - the home side naturally couldn't keep up with our pace. Our set pieces also worked well, and our coaching staff celebrated three goals from well-rehearsed routines.
The substitutions brought additional attacking power to our Salzburg team, with Magdalena Schwarz scoring a particularly impressive goal. After a one-two with Katja Wienerroither, the summer signing slipped into ****** e and slotted the ball home – just one of Schwarz's five goals. While our team squandered several clear-cut chances, last year's finalists ultimately capitalised on their superior footballing abilities in the final stages of the match, scoring almost by the minute. With a 15-1 win, we put our 2026/27 cup opener behind us.
We put in a good performance, and the girls were focused. Some players who haven't started much recently got to play, but they all performed well and were on top form for the full 90 minutes. The girls always wanted to attack and go for the next goal – that's not something to take for granted, and it was a well-deserved win!

A laptop arrived late. What was on it made things worse. And now Apple is asking a federal court to move faster, arguing that evidence in its lawsuit against OpenAI is being actively destroyed.
Apple filed a new brief on Aug. 31, escalating its legal battle against the ChatGPT maker. The filing accuses OpenAI of withholding key evidence and alleges that a former Apple engineer sent instructions to an OpenAI colleague to destroy documents. The colleague confirmed she would comply, Bloomberg reported.
The brief was filed Monday, Aug. 31, in support of Apple's motion for expedited pretrial fact-finding in its trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI.
Apple's lawyers said OpenAI only recently provided a critical piece of evidence: an Apple-issued MacBook that former engineer Chang Liu had been using since leaving the company.
Initial forensic ***** ysis of the laptop found that Liu and colleagues at OpenAI "were well aware" of his continued unauthorized access to Apple's third-party cloud storage providers. The filing alleges Liu also "sent instructions for destroying evidence to an OpenAI colleague who confirmed she would comply."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI has seized more than $560,000 in cryptocurrency donations intended for Hamas, the Justice Department said Tuesday in announcing a disruption of financing for the militant group.
In addition to seizing cryptocurrency meant to support Hamas' military wing, the department said that it had taken control of website domains and communication platforms used for fundraising and recruitment, and had obtained information about thousands of people who had contacted Hamas with a goal of giving money to the group.
"My message to Hamas is clear: your networks are not secure, your crypto is vulnerable, and we will not stop until your ability to wage war is defeated," Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said in a video statement announcing the operation.
According to FBI affidavits filed in connection with the seizures, Hamas began testing virtual currency fundraising in or around early 2019 through its Qassam Brigades, or military wing, and solicited donations on its Telegram channel and also used direct online fundraising. Hamas officials bragged that the currency would be untraceable and their websites offered instructions for how to make anonymous donations, the affidavits say.
A major investigative break arrived last year when FBI officials identified a financing network soliciting donations to the Qassam Brigades via virtual currency and a confidential source located in the United States alerted law enforcement to a Telegram post asking for contributions to an email address **** ociated with Hamas.

Kaden Wetjen finally gave Mike McCarthy exactly what he had been asking for. After spending much of the preseason hearing criticism about his decision-making as a returner, the Pittsburgh Steelers rookie broke loose for a huge punt-return touchdown against the Buffalo Bills, and even during the play, McCarthy was still barking the same message he had been drilling into Wetjen all summer.
And the funny part? Wetjen didn't exactly follow the instructions. McCarthy was yelling for him to get north and attack vertically. Instead, the rookie bounced toward the sideline. However, this time, that decision worked perfectly.
Aug 13, 2026; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy watches the action against the Green Bay Packers during the first half at Acrisure Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Barry Reeger-Imagn Images
McCarthy explained what happened on August 28, after the Steelers' 28-27 preseason loss to the Bills. Wetjen broke a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter, giving them the explosive special-teams play the Steelers had been waiting to see from their fourth-round rookie.
"Sometimes coaches say things on a headset they probably shouldn't say, like 'get north, get north' or 'get vertical,' which I was screaming at him at that time. And then he obviously bounced it to the sideline. I saw it on the Jumbotron. I saw why he bounced it, because he didn't have anywhere to go in front of him. He's been under some criticism just for being a young guy on a veteran team, so some tough love. I'm proud of him. I was really happy to see the return unit get that. Obviously, that was just a heck of a return by him, because if you're grading the tape, the coverage unit was in excellent position right there. And he gets around a corner and, obviously, finishes it off. That was a big-time return."

Liverpool's summer planning appears to have moved sharply in the ******* e of a few days, with The Independent reporting that an agreement has been reached for Bradley Barcola and that attention is now turning towards Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott.
For a club that has spent much of the window weighing options and managing price points, this would represent a significant shift. Liverpool's pursuit of Barcola has been long-running, with Paris Saint-Germain holding firm for much of the summer. Their initial valuation was considered prohibitive, yet patience now seems to have brought movement. The expected total package, according to the report, is £120 million, a major outlay and one that would immediately place the France international among the statement arrivals of the market.
There has been a sense that Liverpool's focus on Barcola slowed progress elsewhere. That is understandable when such a large deal is under discussion, financially and structurally. Once a move of this size edges towards completion, clubs can begin to re-order the rest of their window with greater clarity.
That appears to be the case here. Liverpool are now expected to accelerate in other areas, and the midfield picture has come back into view. Even in a squad with numbers in that department, there remains a question over balance, particularly in the deeper roles. The need is less about volume and more about profile.
Scott has emerged as the leading midfield target, and the attraction is clear. The new Liverpool head coach, Andoni Iraola, knows him well from their time together at Bournemouth. Familiarity matters in these situations, especially when a coach believes a player can carry instructions quickly into a different tactical environment.

Hayden Panettiere reportedly gave security strict instructions. The detail has emerged following her death at age 36. The actress and singer had told security to keep ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson away from her Manhattan book signing.
The incident reportedly happened while the Sleepwalker star was promoting her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. According to The New York Times, her private security team was instructed to prevent Hickerson from entering the Barnes & **** le event.
Panettiere and Hickerson dated on and off from 2018 to 2022. Their relationship included multiple domestic violence incidents, and Hickerson pleaded no contest in 2021 to two felony counts of injuring a significant other. He received a five-year protective order and served 13 days of a 45-day jail sentence after credit for time served.
In This Is Me: A Reckoning, Panettiere opened up about the abuse she said she experienced during their relationship. The 36-year-old wrote, "I never wanted to call myself a victim, but here I am. It's part of my story whether I want it to be or not."
The actress also described how violence escalated over time. Panettiere said, "You never forget the first time someone slaps you nor do you forget the last."

As per a new report that has surfaced after Hayden Panettiere's unfortunate demise, the actress suffered from physical pain during her final days. Not only that, she banned her ex-boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, from attending her book signing. For those unversed, first responders reportedly found the "Heroes" alum unresponsive and in cardiac arrest at an Airbnb residence in Greenville, South Carolina. Despite the medical team's best efforts to resuscitate her, doctors declared Panettiere dead on August 16 at 2:32 p.m.
As per a new report by The New York Times, the late Hayden Panettiere suffered from excruciating pain, likening it to "pins and needles" in her legs during her final days. Moreover, she also gave Barnes & ****** le "clear instructions" to keep her ex-boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, "away" during the Manhattan book tour in May. For that reason, the "Nashville" star had also recruited private security.
According to TMZ, his brother, Zach, reportedly was the one who walked in and found Panettiere unresponsive in a chair in the living room.
The Hickerson brothers called 911, and an emergency medical team arrived at 1:50 p.m. Unfortunately, they failed to save Panettiere, and doctors declared her dead at 2:32 p.m. At the time, South Carolina Police announced that they suspected no foul play, and the initial autopsy reportedly revealed no signs of trauma before the actress's death.
The actress detailed her troubled relationship with Hickerson in her memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," released in May. Panettiere spoke about his alleged harsh behavior towards her, which had resulted in three detentions and jail time for her.

Chris Smith recorded one tackle during the Detroit Lions' preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. Pro Football Focus gave him a 47.3 grade. Anyone scanning the box score could have missed him entirely.
Dan Campbell did not.
When Campbell reviewed the film, the Lions coach found the kind of play that can keep a bubble player employed. Smith recognized a defensive substitution problem, adjusted the front without waiting for instructions and accepted an ***** ignment that asked him to battle three offensive linemen.
That one snap may have strengthened Smith's case more than a sack ever could.
Campbell's evaluation of Smith was direct.

Andoni Iraola and his training staff were all present on the touchline which was wonderful to see knowing that the main event at Anfield was soon approaching. There were even a handful of senior players watching from the balcony and I'll note that only Milos Kerkez and Dominik Szoboszlai stayed until the end.
I'm going to start by mentioning new signing Victor Munoz, this kid has pace to burn and is almost brutally direct. There are no Rio Ngumoha step overs but raw power and determination as well some nice switches of direction to throw the shadowing defenders off balance. Munoz also showed his ability with both feet in delivering good crosses and was Liverpool's best attacking outlet.
The other starting winger was Harvey Elliott, a term that should be loosely used in describing his wide play because despite Iraola's vocal instructions for Elliott to stay out wide he ignored him and continued to drift infield seeking the ball. This caused center forward Chiesa to have to go out wide on the right and leaving us with no focal point of attack. I really feel for Elliott after the way his past two seasons have gone but he needed to shake that all off yet it seems he is either vastly shot of confidence or he is trying too hard to be involved to the point he lacks discipline and broke the structure Iraola wanted.
The only other player I really feel is worth mentioning is Trey Nyoni who played the full 70 minutes and was vocally commanding at times during the second half as well positionally disciplined with good breaking up of play and forward passing. Very impressive for a young player who seems to have decided this is going to be his season to prove his worth and has given everything.
Beyond these observations Alexis Mac Allister played around sixty minutes and Wataru Endo played the full match as a center back with none of the senior center backs involved so we should see both new signings Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo get some playing time in the real friendly later.

Bayern Munich continued preparations for the new season with an intense training session that appears to have caught the attention of Vincent Kompany per Tz's Philipp Kessler..
The attackers and defenders initially worked separately on two different pitches before coming together for a match featuring plenty of intensity and physical duels. It was exactly the type of competitive environment Kompany wants to see as Bayern Munich continues building toward the start of the season.
Kompany was heavily involved throughout the session, delivering loud instructions in English and encouraging the players from the sidelines. His energy appeared to match the intensity of the session, with the Bayern Munich coach clearly pleased with what he was seeing.

Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca has indicated that Erling Haaland is unlikely to take over as captain, primarily because of how often he finds the net.
The new City boss has tended to utilise a tactic throughout his career of requiring his skipper to report to the touchline for tactical updates whenever a goal is scored.
Given how frequently the Norway striker scores, Maresca feels it would not be wise for him to fill the void created by Bernardo Silva's departure at the end of last season.
Speaking to journalists during the squad's pre-season tour of Asia, he said: "At Leicester and Chelsea, I had a rule that when we scored, the captain had to come to the bench for instructions and not celebrate."
"But if he scores, then he can celebrate. If Erling is the captain, f****** ****** – we have a problem, can you imagine?

WASHINGTON (AP) — When George W. Bush wrote an essay this year about another president named George, he avoided mentioning the one named Donald.
So did Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. The three ex-presidents joined a roster of historians and authors in contributing to the In Pursuit project, a 250th-anniversary series that had each writer produce an essay about a president or first lady.
Though the project was explicitly designed to transcend today's politics, some of its essays nevertheless reflect anxieties that are flaring in the era of President Donald Trump over the use of power, the health of the democracy and the integrity of the presidency.
The project is being curated by Colleen Shogan, the U.S. archivist who was fired without explanation by Trump last year. She instructed contributors not to be partisan or ideological. "Everybody took those instructions and that guidance very seriously," she told The ****** ociated Press. The goal was for all Americans to "feel welcome to be able to read these lessons and essays and learn something from them."
The mission, Shogan said, "is to surface the lessons from the past 250 years of American history, so that we can learn from those lessons, from both our successes and our failures, so we can plan for the present and the future. It's what has been described as debriefing the American story."

ATLANTA (AP) — An Atlanta-area woman alleges that she was wrongly diagnosed with cancer and underwent an unneeded hysterectomy because of a labeling error.
Cassandra Barksdale and her attorneys filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Kaiser Permanente alleging the mix-up led to the surgery and months of physical and emotional pain.
According to the lawsuit, another patient's tissue sample was mistakenly labeled as belonging to Barksdale, who at age 43 then underwent a full hysterectomy on May 15, 2025, and was told she would get instructions about chemotherapy.
It's unclear how the mix-up occurred. In September, Barksdale was informed that a DNA ****** ysis found the tissue sample showing an aggressive form of endometrial uterine cancer belonged to a different patient and not to her, the lawsuit says.
"She came into Kaiser Permanente looking for answers, and she left with a diagnosis that did not belong to her. And every step that was taken after that was based off of misinformation," her attorney Shannan Young said.

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal looked back at a memorable moment involving former captain Rohit Sharma as the team prepared for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka.

Jaiswal shared a set of pictures from India's training session as preparations began for the two-Test series. However, it was his caption that caught the attention of fans.

The left-handed batter referred to one of Rohit's well-known on-field instructions from India's tour of Australia.

"Because once a legend said 'jab tak khelega nahi, tab tak uthneka nahi'," Jaiswal wrote on Instagram.
The caption was a reference to an incident during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Jaiswal was fielding at forward silly point when he briefly stood up before Steve Smith had completed his shot.

Rohit, who was captaining India at the time, noticed it immediately and reminded Jaiswal to stay low until the ball had been played.

"Ae Jaisu, gully cricket khel raha hai kya? Neeche baith ke rah ("Are you playing gully cricket? Stay down. Don't get up until the ball has been played!)" Rohit was heard saying on the stump microphone.
The exchange quickly went viral and became one of the lighter moments of India's tour of Australia.

Jaiswal's Instagram post brought back memories of that moment as India prepare for the Sri Lanka series.

The Shubman Gill-led team has started training in Colombo ahead of the two-match Test series. Jaiswal is expected to open the batting with KL Rahul when India face Sri Lanka in the first Test at the Galle International Stadium on August 15.

New England Patriots defensive end Gabe Jacas knocked down **** istant coach Mike Smith during a tackling drill at Saturday's practice. On Monday, Smith was able to exact some revenge in a lighthearted moment at the Patriots' eighth training camp practice.
It all started when Jacas ran Smith over during the tackling drill over the weekend. This time, Smith stopped the drill midway through and pretended like he was giving Jacas instructions before wrapping up the unsuspecting rookie and taking him to the ground on the landing pad. He even threw some fake punches for good measure.
And now the two are even.
This is certainly a hilarious moment as the grind of practice continues.
The Patriots are hopeful that Jacas can be a major contributor for the team in his first NFL season. He practiced for the first time on Saturday in a limited fashion. However, on Monday, he repped with the second-team unit in team drills.

USA cricketer Bodugum Akhilesh Reddy has been banned from all forms of cricket for eight years after being found guilty of breaching the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Anti-Corruption Code.

According to a press release from the ICC, the 26-year-old's punishment is linked to corruption during the 2025 Abu Dhabi T10 tournament in the UAE. The ban has been backdated to November 21, 2025, when he was provisionally suspended.

The ICC, which was overseeing anti-corruption matters for the tournament on behalf of the Emirates Cricket Board, found him guilty on three counts.

According to the ICC, Reddy violated: "Article 2.1.1: Attempting to fix, contrive or otherwise influence improperly, or being party to an agreement or effort to fix or contrive in any way or otherwise influence improperly, the result, progress, conduct or other aspect of matches in the ADT10 2025.

"Article 2.1.4: Soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging or intentionally facilitating (or attempting to do the former) another Participant to breach Article 2.1.1 of the Code in one or more Matches in the ADT10 2025.

"Article 2.4.7: Obstructing the DACO's investigation through deletion of data and messages from a mobile device which may have been relevant to the DACO's investigation."
The case relates to an incident on November 19, 2025, before the opening match of the Aspin Stallions. The tribunal found that Reddy approached a teammate, identified as 'Player A', and asked him to "give runs" while bowling, allegedly on the instructions of team management.

After the teammate refused and reported the approach to the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit, he was dropped from the playing XI. Investigators also found that Reddy deleted WhatsApp chats and call logs with the player before the probe. Although he claimed it was routine "data hygiene," the tribunal ruled that he had deliberately destroyed evidence.

Reddy has played four T20Is for the USA, claiming one wicket. The verdict was delivered by a three-member ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal.

Most people ***** ume that the world's most successful investors have some edge that regular people can't access. Better information. Smarter models. A network of insiders who call before the news breaks. Warren Buffett spent 60 years proving that ***** umption wrong, building one of the greatest fortunes in history through patience and simplicity rather than complexity.
And yet when people ask him what they should do with their money, his answer has been the same for decades. It's not a stock tip. It's not a sector call. It's an ETF that anyone can buy for three cents on every hundred dollars invested.
Buffett has made his position clear in shareholder letters, interviews, and annual meetings going back years. In his 2016 shareholder letter, he wrote: "My regular recommendation has been a low-cost S&P 500index fund." At Berkshire's 2021 annual meeting, he said: "In my view, for most people, I think that the best thing to do is buy an S&P 500 index fund."
The most direct version of the advice came in his 2013 letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders, where he described the instructions he had written into his will for the money he would leave to his wife: "My advice to the trustee could not be more simple: Put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund. (I suggest Vanguard's.) I believe the trust's long-term results from this policy will be superior to those attained by most investors, whether pension funds, institutions or individuals, who employ high-fee managers," according to The Motley Fool.

A finance employee at the global design firm Arup transferred $25.6 million in a deepfake fraud after joining a video call with synthetic versions of senior executives. The faces looked real. The voices sounded real. The instructions were false.
That was not an isolated warning. Starbucks quietly retired an AI inventory system only nine months after deployment after baristas reported that it miscounted products and slowed their work. Deloitte's Australian member firm agreed to partially refund the government for a $290,000 AI-assisted report that included nonexistent academic sources and a fabricated court quotation. Different industries. Different technologies. The same failure: people could not trust the output, the identity, or the system.
Trust is becoming a form of economic infrastructure. Companies that cannot engineer it will move slower, spend more, and lose markets. When trust is strong, capital moves, partnerships form, and companies scale. When it breaks, transactions slow, compliance and insurance costs rise, and leaders retreat from risk.
Trust is not blind faith. It is earned confidence that facts are real, identities are authentic, systems are secure, contracts will be honored, and someone will be accountable when things go wrong. In business terms, trust reduces friction. In strategic terms, it creates speed.
As America marks its 250th anniversary, we should remember that trust was not a side note to the founding. It was the bet. In my first three essays in this Freedom & Enterprise series, I described the Declaration of Independence as America's first founding bet, the system it created as one that let people build free, and the freedom to fail as one of our greatest competitive advantages. Beneath all three is a more fundamental principle: America trusted free people to govern themselves, take risks, honor commitments, and build institutions strong enough to survive disagreement.

LONDON (AP) — Icelandic coast guards and special forces seized a ship operated by a group founded by anti-whaling activist Paul Watson and detained its crew, officials in the Arctic island nation said Saturday.
The Icelandic Coast Guard said the crew of whaling ship Hvalur 9 requested **** istance on Thursday evening because they believed their safety was under threat from the protest vessel Bandero. It said the Bandero ignored coast guards' instructions to leave Icelandic waters, and later an order to stop its engines.
Coast guards and the police special forces Viking Squad boarded the vessel around midnight on Thursday and detained its crew. Watson was not aboard.
The Captain Paul Watson Foundation confirmed in a statement that the vessel had been seized. It said the 21 crew members were being detained aboard the ship without their phones.
The ship arrived Friday in Reykjavik, Iceland's capital, and police have taken over the investigation, the coast guard agency said. Icelandic national broadcaster RUV reported that police will seek to deport the crew and ban them from returning to Iceland.
