The New York Giants are adding former Dallas Cowboys running back Phil Mafah to the practice squad, the team announced Monday.
Following the incredible upset win over the Cowboys to begin the season, the Giants add some depth to the running back room behind Cam Skattebo.
A former seventh-round pick with the Cowboys during the 2025 NFL draft, Mafah has only appeared in one career game since entering the league. He has five carries for 18 rushing yards and a touchdown while adding two receptions on two targets for 11 receiving yards.
The Giants aren't planning to make any major changes to the running back room. While Skattebo will lead the way, there was a clear rotation with Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy Jr in the backfield. Najee Harris was a healthy scratch in Week 1.
In other roster news, the Giants waived wide receiver Dalen Cambre from the roster.

Tyrone All-Ireland winner Conor Meyler said his concern over the planned merger of the GAA, Camogie ******* ociation and Ladies Gaelic Football ******* ociation [LGFA] is that the issue "is going to be thrown to the wayside again".

CHICAGO (AP) — Christian Yelich capped Milwaukee's four-run sixth inning with a tiebreaking two-run homer, helping the Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 9-4 on Tuesday night.
Milwaukee used a 13-hit attack to restore its eight-game lead in the NL Central over Chicago, bouncing back nicely after losing 17-3 to the Cubs in the opener of the four-game series. The top three hitters in the Brewers' lineup — Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang and William Contreras — went 6 for 14 and scored four times.
A day after hitting a franchise-record nine homers, Chicago was held to three singles and three doubles on a muggy night at Wrigley Field. Tyrone Taylor drove in two runs, and BJ Murray Jr. singled in the sixth for his first hit in his major league debut.
Milwaukee went ahead to stay in the sixth. Turang scored on a balk by Daniel Palencia, and Andrew Vaughn's RBI double tied it at 3. Yelich then drove an 0-2 slider from Palencia (2-2) to right-center for his 10th homer.
Yelich also walked and scored on Joey Ortiz's eighth homer in the eighth, a two-run shot to center field off Tyler Ferguson that lifted the Brewers to a 9-4 lead.

Just when you thought it was safe to draft a Giants RB, the team signed Najee Harris. Could he be the spoiler in a suddenly crowded backfield?
If you're a Cam Skattebo true believer, or if you plan to add Tyrone Tracy as an insurance policy, there's still a chance that this could all work in your favor. Harris is still returning to form after tearing his Achilles last year. He has only 19 touches since the end of the 2024 season. He has not yet earned a weekly role, and there's a chance he could be a distant third wheel.
More realistically, however, Harris will help stabilize a relatively injury-prone RB corps. Skattebo missed nine games last year and is known for inviting contact. I'd put his over/under on 2026 games played at 13.5. The expectation this summer has been that Tracy would be in line for at least a few spot starts. Although he filled in admirably for Skattebo last year, he regressed a little bit statistically on a per-touch basis, including dips in yards per carry and broken-tackle rate.
The addition of Harris takes some pressure off the Giants to overwork Skattebo, and it also generates competition with Tracy for the 1B role. It's essentially a lose-lose if you've been targeting either of those guys. The only winner is Harris, who has plenty of room to pop based on his current overall-237 / RB66 ADP. We'll know in the next one to two weeks whether he'll be a fantasy spoiler candidate.

Tyrone Tracy's nightmarish preseason took another seemingly unfortunate turn on Friday night when he left the New York Giants' game against the New York Jets with an injury.
Tracy, the Giants' leading rusher the past two seasons, has had a rough preseason. He missed a block in the first preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings that led to quarterback Jaxson Dart taking a big hit. In Week 2 against the Miami Dolphins, Tracy fumbled in the red zone despite being untouched.
Running backs Cam Skattebo and Devin Singletary did not dress for Friday's game. Tracy, looking to play a clean game after the miscues in the first games, and Najee Harris did.
Tracy was having an excellent night before being injured. He had four carries for 37 yards, an average of 9.3 yards per carry. Tracy had a 6-yard touchdown run, and a long run of 16 yards.

The Cubs outscored the Diamondbacks 11-7 in this three-game series.
Unfortunately, they don't grant series wins that way. Arizona simply spread their runs out better than the Cubs did. and in Wednesday's game, Eduardo Rodriguez, Brandyn Garcia and Juan Morillo held the Cubs scoreless on just two hits, and the Cubs dropped the series finale 2-0, losing the series and finishing their road trip at 2-4.
It's even more frustrating because the Cubs got excellent work out of all three of their starting pitchers in this series. Kevin Gausman, Clay Holmes and Matthew Boyd held the Diamondbacks to eight hits and one run in 20 total innings of work. That's just outstanding. Unfortunately, one blown save and one excellent pitching performance by Rodriguez made this a Cubs series loss.
The Cubs were held hitless by Rodriguez for the first four innings until Tyrone Taylor singled leading off the fifth. Taylor eventually stole second, but was stranded.

SPARTANBURG — In the 1990s, Trey Gowdy met a young man from Spartanburg named Ricky Tyrone Samuel.
Gowdy, who'd go on to represent the area in Congress, was a federal prosecutor at the time. Samuel had gotten into some trouble, and he had a choice.
"He could follow that sometimes-predictable path for young people who get in trouble, or he could use that incident to try to turn his life around," Gowdy said, recounting the story during a House subcommittee hearing in March 2017. "He chose to turn his life around, and he met with us."
Samuel became a witness in a federal criminal case. Six months later, he was found dead — shot execution style beside a pond in northern Greenville County, Gowdy told the subcommittee he chaired.
Gowdy has moved on from his time as a prosecutor and a U.S. Representative, but that story stays with him.

Clay Holmes looked much more like the pitcher that the Chicago Cubs hoped they were getting at the MLB trade deadline after acquiring him from the New York Mets.
Holmes began his second start for the Cubs with five perfect innings versus the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday. Perhaps even more impressive, he did so by only striking out two batters. Otherwise, Holmes recorded groundouts on seven of his first 15 outs.
The Cardinals got their first hit with one out in the sixth on a José Fermín single. But Holmes kept St. Louis off the board by getting César Prieto on a forceout to second base, followed by a JJ Wetherholt groundout.
Holmes eventually finished with 1 hit allowed in 6 2/3 innings. He was relieved by Ryan Rolison after walking Jordan Walker with two outs in the seventh inning.
Matthew Liberatore matched Holmes with four perfect innings to begin his start. He gave up his first hit with one out in the fifth on a Nico ***** ner single. Liberatore lasted until the sixth when he allowed a leadoff walk to Tyrone Taylor and Dansby Swanson single.

Is New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo a good player to bank on as a breakout star in fantasy football next season?
NFL.com's Matt Okada believes so, and lists Skattebo as one of 14 breakout candidates for fantasy football in 2026.
From Week 2 through Week 7 of Skattebo's rookie season, while he was the feature back and healthy, he scored the sixth-most fantasy points at the position, averaging 19.1 per game. He did so despite averaging just 0.5 yards before contact per carry during this span, amazingly averaging 3.7 yards after contact per carry and forcing a missed tackle on 29.2% of his carries, per NFL Pro. The good news: New head coach John Harbaugh has already reshaped the run game in front of Skattebo with the selection of offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa and the acquisition of fullback Patrick Ricard (among other moves).
There are hurdles to the second-year back's breakout: the injury risk of Skattebo's violent running style and, to a lesser degree, the presence of Tyrone Tracy Jr. in the backfield. But with good health and an improved offense, Skattebo has the ultimate upside to contend for RB1 overall.
Skattebo was a productive running back before suffering an injury last season. He found ways to accumulate yards on the ground and reach the end zone, earning goal-line touches and similar opportunities. He is projected by some to rush for more than 1,000 yards in 2026, positioning him as a player who may experience one of the biggest jumps next season.

The Dodgers' woes in the month of August continued on Wednesday, as their losing streak reached a season-high six games in a 7-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Shohei Ohtani got the best of his former WBC teammate Shota Imanaga, as he turned around a center-cut fastball for another leadoff home run. It is Ohtani's 29th leadoff home run as a Dodger, passing Davey Lopes for the second on the franchise leadoff home run list. Ohtani's hit streak is now at nine games.
The Cubs would immediately respond against Eric Lauer, as Pete Crow-Armstrong smashed the first pitch he saw over the center field wall to tie the game.
The Dodgers added a pair of singles from Mookie Betts and Miguel Rojas in the top of the second inning, but Imanaga got out of the jam as Hunter Feduccia lined out to right field in his first Dodger at-bat since last year.
The Cubs were able to produce with men on base in the bottom of the second inning, as after a leadoff single from Nico ***** ner, Dansby Swanson drove him home with a double down the left field line to give Chicago a one-run lead. Lauer got Tyrone Taylor to fly out for the second out of the inning, but Crow-Armstrong had his second RBI of the game with a double of his own to extend the Cub lead to two.

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs are poised to acquire pitcher Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the New York Mets for touted infield prospect Jefferson Rojas.
It's the latest effort by the busy Cubs to replenish an injury-depleted pitching staff as they attempt to chase down first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central and hang onto the National League's top wild-card spot.
Earlier in the day, Chicago obtained reliever Ryan Zeferjahn from the Los Angeles Angels for two minor leaguers: catcher Moisés Ballesteros and right-hander Mason McGwire — son of retired slugger Mark McGwire. Reason for pessimism: The Giants had one of the league's worst run defenses last season and traded away defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence in the offseason. That leaves a potentially big hole on the interior defensive line. If Nabers doesn't get back to his rookie form from 2024, the offense lacks playmakers on the outside.
The Giants possess clear star power. Dart is capable of topping 3,500 passing yards and 500 rushing yards in 2026. Nabers has the talent to finish among the league's top five in receiving yards. As expected, the reward to Xzavion Curry for soaking up five innings in relief on Friday night was a ticket back to Syracuse. Kevin Herget was recalled yesterday to take Curry's spot on the roster.

Tyrone Taylor is one of many names rumored to be on the block as the Mets get closer to the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
And as the Mets continue to start Taylor to showcase the veteran outfielder to potential trade partners, he's been making the most of the opportunity, including in Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Marlins. Taylor's two-run blast accounted for the only offense by the Mets, another blast in what's become a string of them for Taylor.
The second-inning blast was Taylor's 10th of the season, with seven of them coming in his last 19 games dating back to July 4. It's the most he's hit in that span in his career and the fourth-most in the National League during that period. He's also leading the majors in slugging (.951) and OPS (1.389) in that span.
"He's been phenomenal," interim manager Andy Green said after the game. "Swung the bat as well as anybody in the league. Feels like he's homering every time we put him in the lineup. Absolutely crushed that ball today. Defends the field, plays with energy, runs the bases well; he's been great."
Green was asked what's changed for Taylor to give him these types of power numbers and the skipper said it comes down to belief.
