USC football's most important game of 2026 is against Oregon. However, if the Trojans do lose that game, they still have a path to the College Football Playoff in the Big Ten. They would likely need to beat either Ohio State or Indiana to get where they need to go. They would also need to beat Penn State and Washington, but that's a separate conversation. ARDMORE, Pa. – It was a record-breaking day as Merion Golf Club, welcomed the most ticketed fans for a U.S. Amateur in the championship's history. With attendance numbers pushing 3,000, the line to get into the pro shop remained wrapped around the clubhouse most the day, while the scene for the first tee as the four quarterfinal matches started was electric.
"I was totally shell-shocked by the amount of people that were out there, to be brutally honest," Georgia grad Carter Loflin said. "I've played in front of people before, but not like that. Honestly, it took me a minute to get used the gallery and everything. I looked at Brandon [Knight, his opponent] on the first tee, and I was like, 'Dude, I've never seen people four-deep like this before.'"

The transition from college to the NFL can be difficult for some rookies, especially when they are thrown into the fire like Chicago Bears safety Dillon Thieneman has been.
Thieneman was expected to be a starting safety for the Bears, but is now one of the only healthy safeties on the roster. Training camp has been brutal for the Bears so far with numerous players, particularly on defense, missing time with injuries including safety Coby Bryant, who will miss four to six months after having knee surgery.
Thieneman has been getting a majority of first-team reps throughout training camp so far, and although he is focused on improving each day, it does feel like a lot at times.

Last week, USC got some brutal news when head coach Lincoln Riley announced that offensive lineman Kilian O'Connor will miss the entire 2026 season. A veteran presence in the room, O'Connor was projected to start at center for the Trojans for the second consecutive year.
With O'Connor out, USC will be forced to adjust its offensive line. Following Tuesday's practice, Riley mentioned four options that the Trojans have been trying out at center in O'Connor's absence.

The J.J. McCarthy era may already be over with the Minnesota Vikings. He will, barring a shocking roster move, be part of the team in 2026 and 2027. But, barring a shocking leap forward into competence, he will not be the homegrown franchise quarterback for which the Vikings have been searching since Daunte Culpepper was winging deep ***** down the decidedly non-hallowed halls of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
That's because McCarthy, even before Minnesota's first preseason game of the season, has been demoted. There was no hemming and hawing when it came to specifics of competition. There's no "-or-" designation on the depth chart. Head coach Kevin O'Connell understood people paid enough attention to see Kyler Murray was taking the lion's share of snaps with the starting offense in practice. He understood the frustration that came with averaging nearly 11 wins per season without a single playoff victory under his belt.
Thus, he made the logical decision most people expected.
It's another brutal blow in a brief career filled with them for McCarthy. He missed the entirety of his rookie season due to a knee injury. In his stead, journeyman backup Sam Darnold went from "veteran mentor" to "stud quarterback" in a 14-win season. O'Connell opted to stick with the quarterback his front office drafted 10th overall in 2024. That was two slots ahead of Bo Nix, a different kind of flawed-but-intriguing passer who was arguably an ankle injury away from leading the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl last winter.

By all accounts, it's been an absolutely brutal season for Mets pitcher Kodai Senga. And even when there was something to celebrate, it still didn't exactly go his way.
After a solid first three seasons in MLB and an All-Star appearance in 2023, Senga's numbers ballooned amid injuries this year. But despite his 8.12 ERA in 16 appearances, Senga had an opportunity to go for his first-career save on Monday against the first-place Braves.
Senga was able to pitch a scoreless ninth inning and record the save in the 8-5 win. But rookie teammate Carson Benge was seemingly unaware of the milestone for Senga. Instead of keeping the baseball for the pitcher, Benge threw the final out into the Truist Park stands.
Senga could only watch as that keepsake was lost for good.
Now, there could have been an effort to retrieve the baseball. But with it being the final out of a road game, it was nearly impossible to get someone out there in time to set up an exchange with the fan.

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White seems to be on the hot seat.
Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham was recently on the receiving end of a brutal foul from Chicago Sky's DiJonai Carrington, which led to her ejection from the game.
Cunningham flat-out called the foul intentional, sparking a major debate about Carrington's behavior. Of course, Stephanie White, the head coach of the Fever, was expected to be in support of Cunningham.

The Arizona Diamondbacks don't know who their closer will be for the stretch run of an air-tight NL wild-card race. But it won't be Paul Sewald.
The Cardinals designated Sewald for ******* ignment Monday, ending the veteran closer's second stint with the franchise at a critical juncture of the playoff race.
The transaction removes Sewald from the 40-man roster. Arizona now has seven days to either trade Sewald, release him, send him to the minors or place him on waivers. His time with the big-league club is done.
Manager Torey Lovullo spoke about the decision with reporters Monday evening.
"It was a brutal decision, Lovullo said. "He's meant so much to this organization. He's closed out 24 games. He solidified things for our '23 run. He had a number of saves in '24, where he got banged up.

For the third consecutive series, the Giants have won the opener and lost the last two.
While quality pitching, along with some shoddy defense, couldn't sustain itself over the entire game on Saturday, blame for Sunday's extra inning 3-1 loss rests solely on the shoulders of San Francisco's hitters.
After Willy Adames's 5th inning solo shot on Friday night, the offense had laid nothing but eggs against Detroit pitchers. Jackson Jobe and Co. held them scoreless yesterday. A couple of fortunate breaks on ******* in play and a throwing error helped the Giants complete their only circuit of the bases against a dominant Troy Melton (fun fact: he's a former teammate with Casey Schmitt at SDSU). But when the game came down to the wire, the final 7 hitters from the 8th to the 10th innings did this: ground into a bases loaded double play, then strike out six times.
Over the last 21 innings of this series, the offense scored just one run.
A run that was nearly enough for Logan Webb, who stifled a hot Tigers team over 8 innings. The work was fast too. Webb pitched at a brutal pace and attacked the zone with 66% strike-percentage. From his main trio of offerings, the sweeper was Sunday's star. He leaned on it heavily on his first trip down the order, and overall, nearly half (14 of 30) of his breaking ******* went for called strikes. Hundreds of thousands of people in Puerto Rico's capital and surrounding communities woke up without running water as a massive rationing measure took effect Friday. It comes amid a severe drought on top of shortages due to infrastructure issues on the island.
"It's brutal," San Juan resident Gloriany Baba told CBS News in Spanish. "It's unbelievable to live through this today."
Residents were seen filling up jugs and buckets with water ahead of the rationing, which affects more than 180,000 customer accounts — meaning households and businesses — in San Juan and six other municipalities. Customers were divided into two groups that will alternate not having water for at least 48 hours at a time.
Government officials have not said when the rationing will end and have warned the outages could be extended to 72 hours at a time.
In San Juan, July was the driest month in more than 120 years and the second hottest on record. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, about 36% of Puerto Rico is facing a severe drought, and another 32% is in a moderate drought.

Brooks Koepka has failed to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs following his dramatic return to the PGA Tour.
Koepka controversially rejoined the PGA Tour from LIV Golf at the start of the season, making use of the new Returning Member Program.
But his regular season has now come to an end after the Wyndham Championship, where he finished in a tie for 67th place.
That result means he hasn't done enough to finish in the top 70 for next week's FedEx St. Jude Championship, which kicks off the PGA Tour playoffs.

Things got scary toward the end of his career when he suffered four concussions in just his last 20 starts. Aikman still calls two of those injuries severe.
Back then, the NFL didn't consider those head traumas as seriously as it does now, so he was constantly thrown back into games without any of the medical protocols or safety checks that players get today.
The best example happened during the 1993 NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers. Aikman took a knee to the head from a 49ers defender. According to reports, the hit caused temporary amnesia. He had to watch the film later just to see what happened.
Now at 58, Aikman openly admits he thinks about the long-term effects from time to time, but he doesn't let it ruin his life.

NEW YORK (AP) — Marine Johannes scored a career-high 27 points, hitting seven 3-pointers, and the New York Liberty routed the short-handed Las Vegas Aces 111-71 on Sunday.
The Aces (22-11) were playing the second-half of a brutal back-to-back that had them in Minnesota on Saturday and facing the Liberty less than 24 hours later. A'ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young all missed the New York game to rest.
With the trio out, Las Vegas was missing 57 points per game. Brianna Turner, Dana Evans and Jewell Loyd took their places in the starting lineup and couldn't make up for the lost production. The three new starters combined for eight points.
New York (20-13) has won four straight and seven of its last eight games.
The Liberty went right at the Aces, scoring the first five points of the game. They were up 24-15 after the first quarter and led 50-39 at the half. New York put the game away to start the third quarter, scoring the first seven points, five by Rebecca Allen. Las Vegas didn't score for the first 5:37 of the third quarter until NaLyssa Smith made a layup.

The Aces (22-11) were playing the second-half of a brutal back-to-back that had them in Minnesota on Saturday and facing the Liberty less than 24 hours later. A'ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young all missed the New York game to rest.
With the trio out, Las Vegas was missing 57 points per game. Brianna Turner, Dana Evans and Jewell Loyd took their places in the starting lineup and couldn't make up for the lost production. The three new starters combined for eight points.
New York (20-13) has won four straight and seven of its last eight games.
The Liberty went right at the Aces, scoring the first five points of the game. They were up 24-15 after the first quarter and led 50-39 at the half. New York put the game away to start the third quarter, scoring the first seven points, five by Rebecca Allen. Las Vegas didn't score for the first 5:37 of the third quarter until NaLyssa Smith made a layup.

NEW YORK (AP) — A'ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young all missed Las Vegas' game against the New York Liberty to rest on Sunday, when the team was playing the second half of a difficult back-to-back.
The Aces lost in Minnesota on Saturday in a nationally televised game and didn't arrive at their hotel in New York until nearly 10 p.m. after making the almost 1,200-mile trek from Minneapolis.
"I mean, everybody has a brutal schedule at some point. I don't even think they do this in the NBA, though, where it's less than 24 hours," Aces coach Becky Hammon said. "You can check, but I'm pretty sure that's not even legal on the NBA side, you'd have to look up. But I don't recall. With the time change, it ends up being that."
The NBA has frequent back-to-backs as well.
Las Vegas' trip is among the worst a team could have as far as back-to-backs goes. The league won't make teams travel two times zones or have less than 22 hours between games if it's playing consecutive days, according to a person familiar with scheduling. The person spoke to The ******* ociated Press on condition of anonymity earlier this week because they weren't authorized to speak publicly about it.
