A federal judge ordered the Trump administration on Friday, Sept. 4, to provide 48 hours' notice before moving forward with work on the site of a planned 250-foot arch near Arlington National Cemetery.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan ruled that the administration must inform the court "before engaging in any activity on Memorial Circle other than on-site information gathering" to identify underground cultural artifacts.
Chutkan reinforced her order a day after Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum announced plans on Sept. 3 to break ground at the site of the arch in the coming days.
"We are preparing to start, over the next two-week period, the excavation work necessary for the Great Triumphal Arch and Military Observation Deck, at Memorial Circle on Columbia Island between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery," Burgum wrote on X. "This will be one of the Great Pieces of American Architecture, honoring the history and significance of Arlington Cemetery and befitting the most powerful Capital in the World."
The proposed arch, one of several projects Trump has launched in an effort to change the landscape of the nation's capital, has been controversial from the start. A group of three veterans and a historian filed a lawsuit in February to oppose the project.

John Travolta and Priscilla Presley were spotted spending time together months after a court filing made wild claims about just how close their famous families might be connected.
The Grease star, 72, and Priscilla, 81, were photographed chatting at the Ramones 50th Anniversary Tribute at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles on Sunday, August 30.
The two appeared to be lost in conversation as they mingled at the event, which was also attended by Travis Barker, Billy Idol, Fred Armisen and more.
Their reunion came months after legal documents claimed Priscilla's granddaughter Riley Keough donated the egg used by Travolta's late wife, Kelly Preston, to conceive their son Ben.

John Travolta commanded attention as he made a rare public appearance in Los Angeles on Sunday night, looking worlds away from the clean-cut image that made him a Hollywood heartthrob.
The 72-year-old Grease icon showed off a full salt-and-pepper beard as he hosted the Official Ramones 50th Anniversary Tribute at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on August 30.
John embraced the evening's punk aesthetic in an all-black ensemble comprising skinny jeans, a Ramones T-shirt and a classic leather biker jacket.
But it was his accessories that really transformed his appearance, with the actor adding round dark sunglasses and a deep red beret. The distinctive headwear has become something of a signature for John in recent months, with the star previously turning heads in a cream version at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Berets have recently become John Travolta's signature look as the Grease star was spotted rocking another one at the Ramones 50th anniversary tribute.
Travolta, 72, took to the stage at Hollywood Forever Cemetery on Sunday, August 30, with Linda Ramone — the widow of the late Johnny Ramone — while wearing a red beret, a leather biker jacket, round sunglasses and, naturally, a Ramones tee.
"Two years ago, I had the pleasure of experiencing the Hollywood Forever Johnny Ramone Tribute for the first time. It was a blast, and I want to return again for the Ramones tribute! With showing something new, my directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach. And something old, the 50th anniversary of [the] original Carrie. It is going to be a fun night. See you there," he said in a statement, per Daily Mail.
The bold fashion choice came three months after the Hairspray actor debuted a similar white beret on the red carpet at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival in May.
"I love it," he told People when asked about the headwear in New York on May 21. "Once Vogue and Harper's Bazaar voted me the best dressed at Cannes, I went, 'Okay, we've arrived.'"

A Turkish content creator and former volleyball player, Ceyda Yakova, has tragically passed away in a motorcycle crash near the road in Şile, outside of Istanbul. She was 22.
According to Univision, Ceyda Yakova was alone when she lost control of her motorcycle and crashed into a roadside traffic sign. As a result, she suffered severe injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where she passed away shortly after.
Eyewitnesses said she lost control when her rear wheel slipped during a high-speed turn. It was later revealed that Yakova had parked her motorcycle on the roadside for a short rest before the crash.
The family said they saw footage of the accident. Ceyda's father, Cem Yakova, said it was a relatively gentle bend rather than a steep one, and the motorcycle was moving around 100 kilometers per hour when the wheel hit gravel, causing it to veer suddenly as his daughter collided with the pole. His wife, Melek Yakova, said she did not consider her daughter guilty.
Yakova was buried in the Ayazağa cemetery, close to the Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa mosque, on August 18.

BEIJING, Aug 18 (Reuters) - China consigned the body of former Premier Zhu Rongji to the flames on Tuesday and lowered the national flag to mourn the no-nonsense reformer who died last week aged 97, as citizens recalled a bygone era and reflected on his ‌complicated legacy.
Security was tight across the city, particularly around Tiananmen Square and the leaders' enclave of Zhongnanhai, the centre of political power, which lie ‌on the route to the Babaoshan crematorium.
President Xi Jinping and the other six members of the Politburo standing committee stood in silence and made three bows before Zhu was cremated at the Beijing cemetery for top officials and national heroes, the official news agency Xinhua said.
Former President Hu Jintao, 83, who has missed a string of recent public events, sent a wreath of condolence for the former second-ranking official, it added.

Minka Kelly and Dan Reynolds returned to Hollywood Forever Cemetery for their second Cinespia date night of the summer.
The Ransom Canyon actress and Imagine Dragons frontman attended the sold-out outdoor screening of Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands on Saturday, July 25.
They coordinated in white tops and jeans before settling onto the cemetery lawn for the movie. Photographs from the event showed Reynolds sitting close to Kelly with his arm around her as they relaxed on a blanket.
Kelly and Reynolds previously attended Cinespia's May screening of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Their return placed them alongside Rose Byrne, Rachel Bloom and married actors Liza Colón-Zayas and David Zayas.
Reynolds wore a fitted white T-shirt with relaxed blue jeans and brown slip-on shoes. Kelly matched him in a sleeveless white top and wide-leg jeans, removing her shoes after the couple reached their picnic setup.

ATLANTA — More ghosts loom over England-Argentina than a cemetery. These two nations don’t meet on the pitch very often, but when they do, the stories — and the ghosts — last for generations.
Ask a La Albiceleste fan of a certain age about El robo del siglo, the dubious offside call that helped cost Argentina the match against England in 1966, and get ready for a full-blast dose of South American fury about the theft of the century. Speak the words “The Hand of God” to an England fan in the wrong pub, and you might end up in a river. ****** , these two nations even fought an actual war, even if it was technically “undeclared” and lasted only a bit longer than this World Cup.
Point being, there’s history here, and ultras and casuals alike will be happy to discuss its nuances with you, at length and at volume.
The players and coaches who will meet on the pitch Wednesday afternoon with a World Cup final berth at stake, though … well, they aren’t saying anything.
“If a fixture provides … so many iconic moments, I think you cannot just say it’s just another football match, but as a coach, we do exactly that, focus on what we can influence,” said England manager Thomas Tuchel on Tuesday — or Match Day -1, in soccer parlance. “We don’t speak about the historic events, we don’t speak about the iconic moments. It's in itself iconic enough and the tension is big enough, so we try exactly the opposite.”

CATIA LA MAR/BOGOTA, July 7 (Reuters) - At the La Esperanza cemetery in western Venezuela, local volunteers have been digging graves for victims of the country's devastating twin earthquakes last month, unloading coffins and helping families search ‌for loved ones.
In the hills above the hard-hit town of Catia la Mar, local volunteers working alongside some cemetery workers have buried 314 people ‌at La Esperanza cemetery, community council head Elis Zabala, 33, said on Tuesday.
About 100 of the people who were buried are identified only by a number linked to morgue records.
"We put our heart and soul into it, but I feel tired," said Zabala, adding that the volunteers are exhausted. Many in the community also need aid like fuel, medicine, water and food.

The Kennedy family compound in Hyannis Port, Mass., stands as one of the most iconic properties in U.S. history.
The place was rented by patriarch Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. back in 1926 and the family added on to the property since purchasing it as the decades have gone by. Now featuring three distinct houses sitting on six acres, the property is not just a spot for scenic summer getaways, but it also serves as a family hub during huge events. It was used as the base for John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign back in 1960 and several weddings have been held on the property — Maria Shriver's to Arnold Schwarzenegger back in 1986 and Sarah Kennedy's 2023 nuptials to Jam Sulahry.
The Kennedy compound has also served as a fortress during sadder times. President Kennedy's sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, was laid to rest at the neighboring Saint Francis Xavier Cemetery and when Ethel Kennedy died in 2024, the family returned to Hyannis Port for a funeral mass nearby at Our Lady of Victory Parish.
Ahead see photos of the Kennedy family at their Hyannis Port family compound through the years.
