The leaders of China, Russia and India are among the heads of state gathering in Kyrgyzstan this week for the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a group billed as a counterweight to U.S. global influence.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are scheduled to attend the events in Bishkek, the capital of the Central Asian nation.
Multiple one-on-one meetings are scheduled on its sidelines, including one between Putin and Xi on Monday, as well as talks between the Russian leader and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, the day of the official SCO sessions.
Russia, now 4½ years into its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and Iran, six months into a war with the United States and Israel, see the summit as an important platform to strengthen their relations with non-Western partners.
The SCO was founded in 2001 by China, Russia and four Central Asian states as a security forum. Over the past quarter-century, it has grown in size and influence, although its goals and programs remain vague and its brand recognition low.

Real Madrid are aiming to make it three wins from three at the start of the 2026-27 season when they host Malaga at the Bernabeu on Sunday evening. It's been a busy eight days for Real Madrid. They started their season last Saturday with a narrow 2-1 win at Espanyol, before a much more convincing victory at home to Real Sociedad on Wednesday. They will hope to complete the week in style, and they are overwhelming favourites to return to La Liga summit with another three points – for a few hours at least.
Two players in particular have made excellent starts to the season for Real Madrid – those being Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe – and they will hope to continue their form against Malaga. The former is off the back of an excellent hat-trick in midweek, while Bellingham has registered one goal and two ***** ists in Los Blancos' first two matches.
For the first time in over eight years, this fixture is being played. Malaga's promotion back to La Liga was welcomed by a lot of Spanish football enjoyers, although they have not made the best start to life in the top flight with one draw (vs Deportivo La Coruna) and one defeat (vs Atletico Madrid) in their opening two matches. They will be massive underdogs at the Bernabeu, but if they are to produce a shock, their man to watch will be star striker Chupe – he scored 25 goals in the Segunda last season, while also netting their only goal of the current campaign against Deportivo last weekend.
Real Madrid will certainly fancy their chances of winning this one, which kicks off at the Bernabeu at 5pm CEST (4pm BST, 11am EDT, 8am PST).

"High school is incredibly important," Oral Roberts coach Kory Barnett said. "It's huge for you to be able to still build out that one, two, three years of getting to know a kid and the ones that really fit you. That's incredibly important. But with where the portal stands ... you have to be ready to adjust."
Coaches nationwide face massive attrition from season to season. UND, for example, will enter 2026-27 with just three returning players. North Dakota State lost eight players to the transfer portal.
Each spring, programs are forced to rebuild on the fly. The portal provides myriad options, with players entering from every division of college basketball.

KYIV, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Ukraine sees a window of opportunity for U.S. mediation to end Russia's war in Ukraine until the end of next summer and has ‌drafted one page of ideas with U.S. and European officials to be presented to ‌Moscow, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.
Zelenskiy said that a ceasefire and a previously discussed U.S. proposal for a free economic zone in Ukraine's eastern Donbas area — to be administered by a third party — were among the ideas in the document.
"It contains one of the ideas for a ceasefire — that is the main point. The second part concerns what the Americans proposed regarding a free economic zone," Zelenskiy told reporters in ‌a weekend briefing.
Zelenskiy said that ⁠he saw a window to end the nearly four-and-a-half years of fighting that stretched from the G20 summit in the U.S. in December this year ⁠until the end of summer 2027, given the looming campaign for the 2028 presidential election in the U.S.

India is hosting the September 12 to 13 summit, where Xi's presence would be watched less for the BRICS agenda than for what it signals about Beijing and New Delhi's efforts to stabilise relations after deadly border clashes in 2020.
"Chinese officials are busy finalising hotels and security protocols," one of the Indian sources with direct knowledge told Reuters.
Last year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China for the first time in seven years, but the relationship has only ‌improved gradually. More recently, a fresh ⁠border-related dispute triggered sharp diplomatic exchanges between the two sides.

UNCASVILLE, CT – Chamique Holdsclaw still remembers the phone call from legendary Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt after Candace Parker committed to Tennessee.
Summitt knew she had another generational talent on her hands just like she did with Holdsclaw a decade earlier.
"She called me and she said, 'We got this one, and this one, she's going to change the game,' " Holdsclaw said Aug. 14 ahead of her Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement.

Denver Summit co-captain Janine Sonis may have dropped to her knees after converting a game-winning free kick in the dying minutes of the Continental Divide derby with the Utah Royals on Saturday, but her name has only been lifted up since she signed with the NWSL expansion team.
Sonis and the Summit have been a match made in the Rocky Mountains.
While the team's marquee signing was U.S. women's national team midfielder Lindsey Heaps, who has served as club co-captain alongside Sonis since joining the team midseason from OL Lyonnes in France, it is Sonis who is undeniably the heart and soul of the club. At his NBA peak, Monta Ellis was a relentless, rim-pressure guard who enjoyed four separate seasons in which he scored at least 20 points per game. At his NBA peak, Steph Curry was the greatest 3-point shooter in the history of basketball; a bona fide pioneer who permanently changed the way one of the world's most popular sports is played, while serving as the MVP-caliber talisman for four Golden State Warriors championship teams. He is a franchise legend, an icon the Warriors will almost certainly construct some sort of statue out of his likeness years after he retires.
Yet Ellis, apparently, thinks their talent is comparable.
While talking about his background after becoming Alcorn State's new basketball general manager on Friday, Ellis claimed the only real difference between himself and Curry during their respective Warriors careers was that Curry played with stacked teams capable of making NBA Finals runs year in and year out. Whereas the best Golden State team Ellis ever played was a 42-win squad that upset the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 2007 playoffs.
At a surface level, Ellis does have a point. In his prime, Curry shared the floor with three other surefire Hall of Famers in Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant. That definitely helped Curry be himself and focus on what he does best. Ellis never played with anyone like that in Golden State. What's funny is that the Warriors didn't think Ellis and Curry were comparable. If anything, they clearly thought Ellis would get in Curry's way as he blossomed, which is why they traded Ellis in 2012 as Curry was finishing up his third NBA season.
And again, Ellis was a dime-a-dozen rim-pressure guard we've seen so many times before. Curry, even now at his older age, sometimes remains unguardable because of his transcendent shooting ability that another player may never replicate. I'm sorry, but there's no way, shape, or form that these two would've ever been interchangeable on Golden State teams that reached the NBA's tallest summit.

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella on Friday pledged to revive the country's oil and gas sector, restore state-owned energy company Ecopetrol and strengthen the electricity system, arguing that energy security would be a cornerstone of his administration.
Speaking during his inauguration, de la Espriella said Colombia would pursue an energy transition — a shift away from oil, gas and coal toward cleaner energy sources such as wind and solar power — but insisted it must not come at the expense of the country's oil and gas industry.
"I believe in the energy transition," he said. "But that transition must be built from strength, not from weakness, from self-sufficiency and not from dependence."
The remarks reinforce a sharp shift from former President Gustavo Petro, who stopped awarding new oil and gas exploration contracts while pushing Colombia toward renewable energy and making protection of the Amazon a centerpiece of his environmental agenda. Just four months ago, Petro's government hosted an international summit in the Caribbean city of Santa Marta aimed at building support for a global transition away from fossil fuels.
The commitments echo promises de la Espriella made throughout his presidential campaign, when he repeatedly vowed to expand oil and gas production and reverse key elements of Petro's energy policy.

Real Salt Lake triumphed over Atlante FC with a 4-0 win in its second of three 2026 Leagues Cup matches. The victory was a result of four different goal-scorers; Spanish-international Sergi Solans, Utah-native Zach Booth, defender Lukas Engel and Argentine-midfielder Pablo Ruiz. The win gave Salt Lake three points in the North American tournament and a victory over Atlante FC during their first-ever matchup.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — FIFA president Gianni Infantino held off the potential of an internal revolt during a summit meeting in Morocco this week. A scathing response from European soccer's governing body on Thursday, however, showed that he still has a fight on his hands to hold onto power.
UEFA blasted Infantino and his organization again over his failed plan to sell stakes in the World Cup, declaring it wants ***** urances that "attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again."
The reaction revealed the depths of animosity toward Infantino as he attempts to run for re-election next year while trying to quell outrage over the equity plan. FIFA issued an apology on Wednesday over the plan, and senior staff members at a crisis meeting in Rabat "reaffirmed their full support" for his presidency.
The UEFA response shows how the apology will not be enough to satisfy his fiercest detractors, who want a change at the top of FIFA.
That process will play out in the coming months with a vote in March among the 211 national member federations. Each nation gets a vote, and he needs a simple majority to retain his presidency.

A lot has happened since September, when National Women's Soccer League commissioner Jessica Berman said she intended to stay with the league.
In November, the NWSL announced her three-year contract extension, keeping Berman in the role through the 2028 season. Before the ink on her contract was dry, the league introduced the High Impact Player rule, in part, to keep Trinity Rodman, one of its most marketable players, stateside. It welcomed two new franchises, Boston Legacy and Denver Summit, to play in March, postponed potential calendar-flip discussions until 2030, launched a new footwear exposure policy and most recently terminated its short-lived streaming agreement with Victory+.
Through the first 15 weeks of the season, NWSL matches averaged 11,174 fans, the second-highest attendance average in league history — behind the 2024 season, which finished with an average of 11,249 spectators.
Expansion clubs in particular have helped fuel those numbers. Denver opened its inaugural season before more than 63,000 spectators, while Boston attracted approximately 30,000 for its debut. Gotham FC hosted more than 42,000 fans for its match at Citi Field, a one-off game against the Washington Spirit at the home of the New York Mets.
Berman, however, is more interested in median attendance as a sign that a "rising tide is lifting all boats."

Following a training session at the hotel on Jeju in the morning, Bayern departed for Hong Kong. After the flight of around three hours, Luis Díaz and colleagues were already enthusiastically welcomed at the airport. Then at the team hotel, too, a large number of supporters cheered the German record champions, making it a very pleasant arrival.
In the evening, Bayern legends Giovane Elber and Roy Makaay visited one of the six FC Bayern Pop-Up Stores in Hong Kong. Since 31 July, fans have been able to purchase, among other things, the shirt with the specially made nameset for Hong Kong here, which the team will wear in the friendly against Aston Villa.
