The verdict is in regarding the Kawhi Leonard saga, and the results are not good for the All-Star forward or his soon-to-be former team.
A months-long independent investigation found the Los Angeles Clippers illegally circumvented the NBA salary cap when they facilitated outside endorsement deals with a collection of team-friendly sponsors, the league announced Wednesday.
Those sponsors were Aspiration Partners, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics and Lockton Insurance.
The resulting penalties are staggeringly stiff.
Due to what the league called a pattern of misconduct uncovered in the investigation, headed by the law firm of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, the NBA has suspended team owner Steve Ballmer from all league and team activities for a year. He has also been fined $30 million.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has opened an investigation into scoreboard manufacturer Daktronics on Wednesday in relation to an alleged sponsorship deal the company had with Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard.
Daktronics acting CFO Howard Atkins revealed the investigation on an earnings call on Wednesday, and said that they have received requests for information from the NBA. Specifics of the SEC's investigation are not yet known. It marks the first public acknowledgement that the NBA is including Daktronics in its investigation into Leonard and the Clippers.
"As you might expect, we have received requests for information from the NBA. Additionally, the Securities and Exchange Commission is seeking information from us concerning the company and Mr. Leonard," Atkins said. "We take these requests seriously and are cooperating. At this point, out of respect for the respective processes, we will not be providing further comment."
Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers have been under scrutiny and an NBA investigation for nearly a year after an alleged no-show sponsorship deal with the now-defunct sustainability company Aspiration. That deal reportedly paid Leonard million for no visible work in an alleged bid to circumvent the NBA's salary cap.
A report last month from "Pablo Torre Finds Out" claimed that Daktronics also hired Leonard to a multimillion dollar sponsorship deal that didn't result in any work from Leonard. Daktronics built the $100 million video board at the Clippers' Intuit Dome.

If you spend enough time online, chances are that you have seen some pretty surprising stuff go viral. From everyone's favorite raccoon (hello, Jimothy) to those reaction GIFs we love to send, you never know what is going to resonate with people.
And while most stories that go viral have some sort of surprising or universal trait in common, every once in a while someone's post will take off like wildfire, spreading across the internet at breakneck speeds. That's exactly what Instagrammer sierranicolereece says happened after she shared a video with her followers before bed that ended up receiving hundreds of thousands of likes.
The topic? Sierra Nicole Reece was simply looking for a brand deal with the Minnesota State Fair, and she asked about it in the most relatable way possible, saying, "Forget Coachella. I'm trying to go to the Minnesota State Fair. They got brand deals for that?"
Now, Reece's viral post appears to have gotten her exactly what she was looking for, which included a sponsorship deal from the fair organizers. And with the fair's opening day just around the corner, everyone is checking back in with Reece to see how her viral request is working out.
The six-second clip appeared on Reece's Instagram account on April 16, 2026. The video featured a close-up of her face as she lay in bed in her PJs. After she hit post, she snuggled up under the covers in her dad's New Jersey home, where she drifted off to sleep completely unaware that her short video was completely blowing up online.

Matt Entz is coaching at Fresno State, not Ohio State. He is coaching in the Football Bowl Subdivision's lower realm, not in its top tier, a point which will be magnified when Fresno State faces USC this Friday. Yet, as USA TODAY Sports reports, Entz is getting major investments and backing from his bosses and Fresno State football donors.
"Entz also is embracing the vision of his athletic director, Garrett Klassy, whose previous experience includes Alabama and Houston in upper-cabinet roles. Klassy's vision for Fresno's "Valley Co-Op" has Entz touting a "quadrupled" monetary investment into the Bulldogs' football roster and sees Klassy linking it to the region.
"'I needed coaches, I needed more boots on the street, for lack of a better term, because it couldn't just be myself, it couldn't just be our Bulldog Foundation staff out there,' Klassy says of the program, which he relates to the San Joaquin Valley's 3 million residents and agricultural roots. 'And the coaches, it's really resonated with the coaches, and we do have a lot of supporters that give to multiple programs. There's two areas where we can make up ground on the rest of the league and that's philanthropic giving. And that's corporate sponsorship, and so we need to grow those immensely. And we're going to announce a record fundraising year, which is $5 million more annually than it was the previous year. Corporate sponsorships with the jersey patches are almost across the finish line; we should be up $2 to $3 million in that area. Now that doesn't make a big difference in the SEC or Big Ten, but that makes a huge difference for us.'
Klassy envisions the 4,300-member Valley Co-Op swelling to 7,000 across the next year.
"Entz, meanwhile, wants Fresno football to live up to its billing as the region's top draw.

More than ever before, college sports are a business for everyone involved.
That money has to come from somewhere, and many schools are finding creative ways to get it. Here are some of the corporate sponsorships funding NIL and other expenses around the Big 12.
In July, Texas Tech announced a 15-year agreement with Galaxy, a data center infrastructure company, to rename Jones AT&T Stadium to Galaxy Stadium.
The former name honored the school's third president, Clifford B. Jones, who donated $100,000 to help fund the construction of the stadium in 1947.
"It goes without saying college athletics continues to evolve," Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt told Sports Business Journal. "I look at that as a very exciting opportunity and challenge to reinvent athletic administration, college athletics and how we continue to build toward a commercial media type of organization."

Demand for high-risk leveraged and inverse single-stock exchange-traded funds in the US may be losing some momentum after a rapid expansion in new products.
A volatile bull market has encouraged investors to seek products capable of magnifying daily moves in some of the market's most popular and volatile stocks. The surge in speculative offerings has been substantial, with leveraged products accounting for as much as half of all new ETF launches in June alone.
However, ****** ysts are increasingly questioning whether the pace of expansion can continue as competition intensifies and ****** ets become concentrated among a relatively small number of successful funds.
"The market for these is saturated and there's only so much money out there chasing this kind of product," said Morningstar ****** yst Daniel Sotiroff. "A few firms at the top end up commanding the lion's share of the money, and then there's a long tail of also-rans who are struggling to attract ****** ets."
ETF industry ****** ysts, including Sotiroff and Cerulli ****** ociates, generally consider between $50 million and $100 million in ****** ets within a fund's first one or two years as an important benchmark for long-term viability. Funds that remain below that range can find it more difficult for their sponsors to cover operating costs.

At least one Callaway executive and multiple Good Good Golf employees are being ousted in the aftermath of their controversial co-branded driver ad.
Last week, the golf equipment manufacturer ended its partnership with the YouTube group, and Good Good walked away from its ***** le sponsorship of a PGA Tour event.

Upegui, who had been in his position since 2023, is believed to be the highest-ranking employee at Callaway to approve the ad in which Good Good cofounder Garrett Clark was depicted shoving fellow Good Good member Alexis Miestowski to the ground.
Callaway CEO Chip Brewer said in a statement on Aug. 25 that the company was "conducting both internal and external investigations and have already made changes to our approval process aimed at ensuring this will never happen again."

Following global football is no longer confined to watching a match for ninety minutes on a weekend afternoon. The modern supporter operates within a continuous cycle of information consumption, tracking tactical breakdowns, injury updates, and transfer market movements throughout the entire week. The transition from physical matchday attendance to a borderless digital ecosystem has fundamentally altered how the sport is covered. This intense demand for constant, high-quality ****** ysis has transformed digital sports publishing, turning fan platforms into comprehensive databases of football knowledge. Rather than relying on simple fixture lists, audiences now evaluate passing networks, expected goals, and historical rivalries to gauge how upcoming matches might unfold. This structural shift in fan behaviour requires publishers to deliver nuanced reporting that goes far beyond basic scorelines, catering to a global readership that treats football ****** ysis with serious ****** ytical rigour.
The appetite for detailed pre-match information has created a natural crossover with online sports markets. Fans who spend hours reading about team formations, defensive vulnerabilities, and managerial strategies routinely apply those insights in practical scenarios. An in-depth understanding of how a Thursday night European fixture might cause squad fatigue ahead of a Sunday domestic clash is exactly the type of context that informs ****** ytical viewing. This precise evaluation of probabilities and match dynamics aligns seamlessly with the mechanics of modern sports wagering, where split-second decisions rely on preliminary research.
Supporters apply this football literacy directly to live sports markets through Virgin Bet ZA, navigating dynamic in-play scenarios with knowledge of player absences and tactical shifts. The integration of data into the spectator experience means that betting is increasingly driven by objective ****** ysis rather than sheer loyalty or guesswork. Bettors rely on injury reports, historical head-to-head statistics, and form guides to build a complete picture of an upcoming contest. Consequently, sports publishing serves a dual purpose, acting as an essential resource for both the traditional fan and the informed punter looking to test their reading of the game against real-time market fluctuations.
Behind the tactical debates and the sophisticated sports markets lies a commercial engine that continues to break historical records. The financial scale of elite football dictates squad depth, transfer market dominance, and ultimately, competitive success across major domestic and European competitions. Broadcast rights, global merchandising, and lucrative corporate sponsorships have elevated top-tier clubs into massive multinational enterprises. "The 2024/25 season set another new record, with the top 20 Money League clubs generating over €12 billion in revenue for the first time." — Deloitte.

Jeff Gordon wheeled the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet the entirety of his illustrious NASCAR Cup Series career. Gordon captured four Cup Series championships and 93 career wins, stamping him as one of the best the sport has ever seen.
Today, Gordon is focused on the business side of the sport as he is the current Vice Chairman of HMS. During an appearance on the "Business of Motorsports" podcast, hosted by Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s older sister, Kelley, Gordon revealed a shocking detail about his driver contract.
In a world full of guarantees, Gordon had none in his driver contract with Hendrick Motorsports. If Gordon performed at a high level on the racetrack or had big-time sponsors, it was something he was a participant in.
"I think people would be shocked if they saw what my driver contract looked like. … There were no guarantees. We work in this world of guarantees, got to have this, got to have that — I had no guarantees. If the car did well on-track, if the car did well with sponsorship. … I participated in that," Gordon said.
If there was a guarantee, it is that Gordon was consistently a threat to win on the racetrack.

Earlier this week, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp stated that the PGA was re-evaluating Good Good Golf's sponsorship of its Austin, Texas, tour stop, which was set to begin in November.
"It's a bit of a fluid situation," he told reporters while expressing his disappointment with the way the YouTube channel-turned-golf brand had handled the fallout from an ill-advised ad for a co-branded Callaway driver that featured the company's CEO pushing a woman to the ground and yelling at her not to touch his golf club.
That fluid situation seems to have solidified, as both Good Good and the PGA announced Thursday that the brand will "step away" as sponsor of the Austin tour event.
"We recognize that we have work to do as an organization, and our focus right now is on our team, our culture, and ensuring we learn from this situation," Good Good said in a statement on its social media accounts. "We are grateful for our relationship with the PGA Tour and appreciate their partnership over the years. We remain committed to earning back trust, and we hope to work together in the future."
"We agree with their decision to use this time to focus on their organization and the work ahead," said the PGA Tour in a statement. "The PGA Tour believes in golf's ability to bring people together and create a welcoming environment for all."

Looking back at his 20-year career in the Irish League, Aaron Hogg remembers the first time he went to the bookies with his team-mates.
A teenager at the time, he didn't know the journey it would set him upon. It was a road of debt, broken relationships and severe depression.
The goalkeeper was not the first Irish League player to have a gambling addiction, and he won't be the last.
But now, eight years since he last placed a bet, he's at the heart of an initiative to try and help those who need it through the new player-led Gambling Support Group (GSG).
Its introduction coincides with increased sponsorship of the men's and women's Irish Premiership from betting companies from this season, while the two League Cups and a regional tournament are also sponsored by bookmakers.

ATLANTA (AP) — Golf Channel postponed Tuesday night's scheduled premiere of the reality show "Big Break x Good Good" by one week because one of the sponsors wanted out, as pressure increased on popular content creator Good Good Golf for its video that showed a man shoving a woman to the ground as she reached for a new Callaway driver.
Golf Channel said postponing the show to Sept. 1 "will allow for necessary production updates following a request from one of the show's sponsors to remove its branding from the series."
Although Golf Channel did not identify the sponsor, multiple reports said it was retailer Golf Galaxy, which had been listed as a presenting sponsor of the show.
The video — an ad for the Callaway driver — was deleted by Good Good late Friday, a day after it first was posted and immediately drew negative reaction for portraying violence against women. The characters in the ad are both with Good Good.
Good Good apologized Saturday in a statement, saying the "depicted actions are not aligned with our values." Callaway said it was disappointed by the video and "appreciative of Good Good addressing this."

MOSCOW, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Russia is open to listening to new proposals on how to reach a settlement on the Ukraine conflict, a senior Russian diplomat said, but ‌any proposals should reflect the "realities on the ground".
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said ‌in an interview with media outlet News.ru published on Friday that the U.S. demonstrated a readiness for "constructive dialogue" and an "understanding of Russia's position".
"At this stage, it is more important to what extent Washington is able to influence the decisions of the Kyiv regime and its European sponsors, who still dream of a 'strategic defeat' of Russia," he told the outlet.
Negotiations between Russia and the U.S. to bring about an end to the conflict ‌in Ukraine have largely stalled amid the war in Iran.
The Kremlin said on Thursday that it had no information yet on a possible next visit to Moscow by U.S. presidential envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who have led negotiations with Russia in the past.

Progressive Insurance announced Tuesday that Colorado is one of 13 programs included in a new college football sponsorship agreement that will place the company's branding on the field. The deal, arranged through Learfield, will also include video board features, LED signage, digital content and other game-day activations.
Colorado joins Boise State, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Purdue, SMU, Syracuse, Texas Tech, USC and Wake Forest in the agreement. Progressive's on-field placement will vary by school, with logos expected near sidelines or at the 25- or 50-yard lines. Financial terms were not released, but Sports Business Journal reported the arrangement is expected to be a multiyear deal.
The logo will debut during the 2026 season, giving Colorado another corporate presence at Folsom Field as the athletic department continues to pursue new revenue. That has been a priority for athletic director Fernando Lovo, who has discussed expanding sponsorship opportunities as college sports move deeper into revenue sharing and NIL-driven roster building.
"We are excited to be a part of the college football landscape with this investment," Progressive media business leader Sean Freeman said in a release. "It is an opportunity to support the collegiate student-athletes at these storied institutions."
For Colorado, the agreement is less about a logo on the turf than the money behind it. The Buffs are competing in an era when every additional revenue source can affect facilities, staffing and athlete resources.

The Oregon Ducks are about to see how much they can save, or earn, with Progressive Insurance.
On Tuesday, Progressive announced a partnership with 13 programs around the country to add on-field logos, starting this season. Oregon is one of the programs that will have logos on the field inside Autzen Stadium. The deal is set to begin this season.
Boise State, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Purdue, SMU, Syracuse, Texas Tech, USC and Wake Forest will also have logos on their fields this season. The move will help inject more funding into athletic departments to support the changing economic landscape of the sport. No financial details about the agreement were disclosed.
Oregon has one of the most expensive rosters in the country in terms of NIL money. Many programs and conferences around the country are seeking corporate sponsorships to help with funding in the future to build competitive rosters.
For the fans, the partnership won't change the experience of watching the Ducks play on Saturdays. Yes, there will be logos on the field and more branding on the LED screens. However, it's a sign of how large Oregon's brand has become, as Progressive targets some of the biggest programs in the country for more national recognition.

Podcaster Pablo Torre had a frank reaction to ESPN's claim that the NBA has found no evidence of cap circumvention between the Los Angeles Clippers and Kawhi Leonard.
Torre's reporting in September 2025 brought the potential cap circumvention between the Clippers and Leonard to light. It launched an NBA investigation that is now nearly a year old.
ESPN revealed that the NBA has found no wrongdoing on the Clippers' and Ballmer's end while recognising the existence of the side sponsorships for Leonard, which had been revealed by Torre.
Torre made a post on X discussing ESPN's report, laying out that the NBA cannot directly link the sponsorships to the Clippers and is instead evaluating their mistakes as a 'failure to supervise,' while also criticising Clippers owner Steve Ballmer's involvement in punishment decisions.
"The subject of the investigation does not get to negotiate with the group that is doing the investigation. But in this case, Steve Ballmer, the richest owner in American sports, has been negotiating a resolution behind the scenes, according to ESPN."

Kelsa Zereski remembers her parents and grandparents working with the Lajoie family on the Lori Lajoie Charity Golf Tournament at Worcester Country Club nearly 50 years ago.
"The Lori Lajoie and the cause, Seven Hills Foundation, one way or another have been part of my life since I was a kid," Zereski said.
The 51st Lori Lajoie Charity Golf Tournament will be held at Worcester CC on Monday, Aug. 17. Over the years, the tournament has raised more than $9 million for Seven Hills Foundation, Greater Worcester's largest provider of programs for the developmentally and physically challenged.
Zereski, 55, and her brother, Scott Fuller, 53, both of Boylston, serve as co-chairs of the Lajoie tournament committee this year. Their parents, Mark and Jan Fuller, served as co-chairs separately in the past and Mark Fuller remains on the tournament committee and lines up the sponsors.

Brad Pitt claims that Angelina Jolie is refusing to turn over her movie contracts and financial documents.
In a July 31 filing obtained by USA Today, Pitt is asking a judge to force Jolie to produce records of her income. His team requested information on upfront acting fees, brand sponsorships, and profit participation statements from 2017 to 2021, according to TMZ.
Pitt is challenging Jolie's claims that she put her career on ice after their 2016 split. TMZ points out that Jolie starred in films like Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Marvel's Eternals, and Those Who Wish Me Dead following their split.
USA Today reported that while Jolie turned over records for 2020 and 2021, she refuses to provide documents from 2017 through 2019. Her team argues that Pitt has no right to see this information and is asking for more documents than he is entitled to.

Legendary Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling perhaps summed up Welsh club Total Network Solutions' somewhat bizarre club name in one hilarious moment several years ago.
It wasn't anything to do with their game against City, he was just affectionately highlighting how a football club had been be named after a fibre optic installation company over their original name, Llansantffraid F.C.
They were the first club to adopt their sponsor's name as their club name but were forced to play any European games as TNS due to sponsorship rules.

A major bill seeking to regulate college sports hit a roadblock in the Senate last week despite lawmakers racing to have the framework approved before leaving Washington for a scheduled five-week recess.
The long-stalled Protect College Sports Act, which would establish federal regulations for name, image and likeness deals for student-athletes, was injected with sudden momentum last week — but that progress quickly sputtered out as the week came to a close. Among other concerns, some lawmakers raised objections that the bill could create legal loopholes in states that have laws restricting transgender athletes from participating in women's sports.
A group of attorneys general from six red states, including Utah Attorney General Derek Brown, wrote a letter to the two main sponsors of the bill to urge changes before it's brought to the floor for a vote.
"For decades, the integrity of women's sports has been under attack by those pursuing a radical transgender agenda at the expense of the safety of female athletes and equal athletic opportunity," the state attorney general wrote in the letter, which was sent to lawmakers on Friday and obtained by the Deseret News.
The Protect College Sports Act is a sweeping proposal to regulate college athletics by creating a national framework dealing with NIL deals, athlete compensation, media rights, revenue sharing, transfer eligibility, and more. Bipartisan lawmakers behind the legislation have argued federal guidelines are crucial to absolve confusion from 50 states operating under different rules.
