The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose more than 3 basis points Tuesday to 4.79%. Driven higher by concerns over the latest flare-up in the war against Iran and its effects on fuel costs and inflation, the yield touched its highest level since January 2025 in trading during the day.
The continuing bond selloff has driven up government borrowing costs around the world. Eshe Nelson of The New York Times noted today that ******* an is seeing 10-year yields above 3% for the first time in 30 years and Germany now has the highest 10-year rates since 2011 (see the Times's chart below).
"A combination of factors are prompting investors to demand higher returns to hold government debt: a flood of borrowing by the world's richest nations, expanding budget deficits, persistent inflation and few signs that countries are able or willing to take steps to improve these conditions," Nelson wrote.
Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi, chief investment officer of the Americas at UBS, said she expects to continue to see heightened volatility in the bond market. "With no clear path to reopening the Strait after six months of war, inflation worries remain elevated," she said in a note, per CNBC. "Uncertainty over the Federal Reserve's policy outlook, fiscal concerns, and rising AI-related debt issuance have all kept bonds under pressure."
Ed Al-Hussainy, a portfolio manager at Columbia Threadneedle, told the Times that it's difficult to "disentangle" the causes of the rate surge. "The only thing we can say right now is that they're all pointing in the same direction," he said, "and that's in the direction of higher rates, and they're doing it globally."

Hertha BSC recorded a comeback victory away at Eintracht Braunschweig in an eight-goal thriller in 2. Bundesliga. Stefan Leitl's side have won each of their first four games of the new season, despite low expectations at the start since they haven't replaced the players departing this summer.
This game did look like a reflection of that reality for the large part of the first-half. Yann Sturm put the hosts ahead inside the first ten minutes before Niklas Kolbe's howler helped Kevin Ehlers to double their advantage.
Braunschweig also had two clear-cut opportunities through Sturm and Aaron Opoku, but they found themselves level at the break after conceding two late goals. Icelandic striker Jón Dagur Thorsteinsson scored on his full debut before Josip Brekalo's memorable strike in the final kick of the first-half.
The Croat attacker capitalized on Braunschweig's poor corner-kick that led to a counter-attacking move as he beat former FC Bayern goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann with a brilliant curler. Hertha also started the second-half brightly as Ehlers canceled his goal by beating his own shot-stopper from Thorsteinsson's delivery.
Kolbe also had his moments in both boxes as the center-back won a penalty-kick twenty minutes before time, which was calmly converted by Brekalo. Hertha's new captain started the season in top form as he hopes to return to Bundesliga with the capital city club.

Golf architect Kyle Phillips has broken ground on the course at the private Pandion Club in Estero, Florida. The new layout, intended to invoke the heathland courses of England with Lowcountry influences, is being built on the site of the former Old Corkscrew Golf Club that was closed earlier this year.
Phillips plans a par-71 course for Pandion Club, stretching to 7,220 with firm and fast playing conditions and a premium on strategic shotmaking. The new layout is scheduled to open in 2027 with membership capped at 280. The golf-only club will include a Lowcountry-inspired clubhouse and expansive practice facilities. The name Pandion is inspired by Pandion haliaetus, aka osprey.
The layout features sandy terrain that should promote Phillips' goals. Having built the top-ranked Kingsbarns Golf Links and Dundonald Links in Scotland and having studied courses around the world, Phillips said that heathland courses are situated on inland dunes, "like the ones we have in Florida."
Old Corkscrew and additional surrounding land was purchased in 2022 by The Hoffmann Family of Companies for $14.5 million, according to property records reported by the Naples Daily News. The Hoffmans purchased the Cottages at Old Corkscrew Golf Club for $4.5 million in a separate transaction. The Hoffmanns also own Old Collier Golf Club in Naples, as well as the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Everblades.
"Everything we do at Hoffmann Family of Companies, we want to provide a unique, best-in-class experience for our guests, and Pandion is going to be no exception" Geoff Hoffmann, CEO of HF Companies' private equity arm, said in a media release announcing the start of construction. "From the moment that you drive through our gates, you will know that you have arrived somewhere special. You are going to feel like you are in nature, and this is an escape. We knew that his experience presented an opportunity to preserve the natural landscape that was embedded on the site, and that's something we are going to build around."

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Reed Hoffmann has been a freelance photographer for The ***** ociated Press for more than a quarter of century. Before moving to the Kansas City area, he was a newspaper photographer for 20 years, He covers breaking news in addition to various sporting events for the AP.
I’m in the “tribune” position, which means I’m high up in the stands at midfield during the match. As such, I’m the “safety” position, meaning I won’t be blocked by players, so if something important happens and the AP photographers on the field are blocked, I should have photos. This photo was taken after Lionel Messi’s second goal of the game. I though I have a photo of him taking the shot with the goalie in the frame, his back is to me and he’s partially blocked by another player. But reaction is often as important, and sometimes more important, than the action. In this case, I followed him as he ran towards the far sidelines celebrating and captured him standing with his arms extended in front of a partial ad that read: “GOT THIS.”
I was using a Nikon Z9 camera, which at 45-megapixels allows images to be cropped quite a bit and still have plenty of resolution for print and online use. But the most important part of my gear was the lens — a Nikon 400mm f/2.8 with a built-in 1.4X teleconverter. That lets me shoot most of the action at 400mm, but after a goal I can flip a switch on the lens which has me now shooting reaction and celebration tighter, at 560mm and f/4. I did that after the goal as he ran towards the sidelines, for closer framing than I would have gotten with just 400mm. The photo was shot at 1/2000 second, f/4, 5000 ISO.
I could see the message board changing as he ran towards it. The “GOT THIS” is only part of an ad slogan, and I only had four frames over two-seconds where that phrase was on the boards, and just one frame where he was positioned best. I knew as I shot it that the words worked with what he’d done. As soon as the celebration finished, I added a voice file to the image (through my camera) and transmitted it to the my editor, Lauren Mackson. She did a great job cropping tight to give it more impact.
