From the moment the 2025 season ended, UTSA set out to find answers for the team's biggest shortcomings. At the top of the list? Winning on the road, and avoiding slow starts.
The Roadrunners are 3-10 away from the Alamodome the past two years, opening the 2024 season 2-4 and starting 3-4 in 2025.
Now, after months of preparing and retooling, UTSA will finally find out if the problems have been solved, visiting Texas State for an I-35 rivalry showdown at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in San Marcos.
"We've been talking about it for a long time," Roadrunners defensive lineman Tai Leonard said. "We've been doing all the work that's required. So, I mean, God willing, we can go out there and showcase."
UTSA coach Jeff Traylor knows the results his offseason of changes to staff, roster construction and even day-to-day practice schedules will take more than one day to bear out.

Ole Miss kicker Lucas Carneiro bailed out the Rebels with a 48-yard field goal as time expired for a 41-38 win over Louisville on Sunday night.
The No. 9 Rebels had given up 14 straight points after taking a 38-24 lead in the fourth quarter. But an 18-yard completion from Trinidad Chambliss to Caleb Odom set up Carneiro's game-winner.
Louisville tied the game with 1:28 to go on a seven-yard TD run by QB Lincoln Kienholz. Had the Cardinals scored with less time left, it's plausible that coach Jeff Brohm would have gone for a 2-point conversion instead of a game-winning extra point. But Louisville kicked the PAT with the hope of getting the ball back or sending the game to overtime.
That did not happen as neither defense had much success in the second half. The teams combined for over 600 yards in the second half as Chambliss threw three touchdowns and rushed for another after halftime.
He finished 21-of-36 passing for 336 yards and those three touchdowns. Two of them went to Deuce Alexander, who had a breakout game with five catches for 159 yards and a pair of 62-yard touchdowns in that second half. Alexander, who is in his second year with the Rebels after transferring from Wake Forest, didn't top the 100-yard mark in any game in 2025.

After an offseason of change, bringing in a new offensive coordinator, overhauling the roster and pushing for a fresh focus on identity, coach Jeff Traylor leads UTSA into the 2026 season with a matchup against UTRGV on Saturday in the Alamodome.
The Roadrunners are about 30-point favorites against their FCS opponent, looking for a strong start as they aim to take a step forward following consecutive 7-6 seasons.
Follow along for live updates and ***** ysis:
The Vaqueros' offense hasn't appeared too scared of the bright lights in the Alamodome, churning out six first downs across their first three drives.
UTRGV did hit a typical early season stumble, trying to rush to the line on fourth-and-1 but botching the snap, leading to a turnover on downs.

Purdue football hosts Indiana State to start the 2026 season as coach Barry Odom enters his second year with the Boilermakers.
Purdue went 2-10 in Odom's first season, winning its first two games, but going winless in Big Ten play. Ryan Browne (58.9% of his passes for 2,153 yards, 9 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2025) returns as the Boilermakers' quarterback, but much of the roster has changed. The Sycamores lost their season opener to Southeast Missouri State, and they were 3-9 last season against most Football Championship Subdivision competition.

WEST LAFAYETTE — Josh Henson and Kevin Kane spent the last month trying to outwit the other.
Now Purdue football's offensive and defensive coordinators are unified in hoping to play complementary football Friday night against someone other than their own team.
For Kane, Friday's kickoff against Indiana State is a first chance to prove Barry Odom's decision to hire him for the role he'd had in 2023 and '24, an unpopular move for fans, was the right choice.
For Henson, it's a chance to show growth after 2025 provided him the first chance to be a full-time offensive play caller in a decade.
"These small little details and just organizing and running an offense, one year back into it, I'm rolling on those things," Henson said four days ahead of the season opener. "Because of that, it's given our coaching staff the ability to go coach our guys on all the small details and I feel like we're further along in that area."

Purdue's biggest 2026 trap game is also must-win opportunity originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Purdue does not have many games it can realistically circle as winnable in Big Ten play. That is what makes Maryland's Nov. 7 visit to West Lafayette so critical.
The Boilermakers are still building traction in Barry Odom's second season, and the conference schedule will offer little sympathy.
Purdue must capitalize on matchups where the talent gap is manageable, home-field advantage matters and the opponent is navigating similar pressure. Maryland checks every box.
CBS Sports college football ****** yst Brad Crawford identified Maryland as Purdue's biggest potential trap game because while the Boilermakers will view it as a prime opportunity for a conference win, the matchup remains deceptive.

After two joint practices, there were more reps to be taken under the Gillette Stadium lights.
The New England Patriots turned those reps into a 24-21 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night in Foxborough.
Here's a glance back on the 7 p.m. ET kickoff before sights set on the preseason finale and the NFL's 53-man roster deadline.
After starting the preseason opener, Tommy DeVito handled a similar workload on Saturday night.
New England's No. 2 quarterback went 8-of-15 passing for 151 yards against Philadelphia. He again found one touchdown and no turnovers before calling it an outing. Six drives had been logged on the odometer by then.

The college football season is set to begin in just under two weeks with the official Week Zero kickoff. A new quest for the College Football Playoff will commence, with multiple head coaches facing major pressure to deliver.
That pressure is not only about winning but, in some cases, also reaching the playoff. The field has expanded to 12 teams and could grow again after this season. For now, only a dozen teams will claim a spot. One team almost certainly under pressure to deliver is the USC Trojans, led by Lincoln Riley.
MORE: Most underrated teams in CFB AP Top 25
Riley was hired away from Oklahoma, where he established himself as one of college football's premier offensive minds. However, he has yet to deliver the level of success USC expected. Because of this, he landed on Josh Pate's list of head coaches facing major pressure to deliver in 2026.

For the third consecutive year, a Washington Huskies linebacker has been recognized on the preseason Butkus Award watch list ahead of the 2026 college football season.
Xe'ree Alexander, a senior who joined Jedd Fisch's program last offseason through the transfer portal after one season at Central Florida, was one of 51 players on the annual watch list after fellow senior Buddah Al-Uqdah found himself on the same list in 2025.
The younger brother of former Husky wide receiver Lonyatta "Junior" Alexander made an immediate impact in his first season on Montlake last fall. An Auburn, Washington native, Alexander made five starts and played in all 13 games for first-year defensive coordinator Ryan Walters, and finished second on the team in tackles (70) and tackles for loss (5), both of which are career highs.
Dating back to 2024 with former UW linebacker Carson Bruener, Alexander and Al-Uqdah are the latest preseason honorees while ex-Husky standout Edefuan Ulofoshio played his way into being one of five finalists in 2023 despite not making the preseason watch list.
"I think—not only for X—but I think that speaks to the program and how he runs it," inside linebackers coach Brian Odom said before the start of fall camp when asked about the talented fourth-year linebacker electing to stay with the team despite having other veteran options around him.

One way or another, Washington Huskies second-year linebacker Donovan Robinson is going to play his way into a role this upcoming fall if he keeps up performing the same way he did on day six of training camp on Thursday.
Robinson, a 6-foot-2 and 225-pound redshirt freshman, had a pass breakup and made his presence felt throughout the day. The Chicago, Illinois native didn't appear in any games last season and comes into 2026 as one of several options as a backup linebacker behind the veteran trio of Jacob Manu, Xe'ree Alexander, and Buddah Al-Uqdah, and sophomore Zaydrius Rainey-Sale.
At Loyola Academy, the former three-star defensive back turned linebacker made himself available as a dual kick and punt returner in addition to being a standout defender. Robinson recorded 71 total tackles, 9 pass breakups, 4 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, and a sack over 26 games between his junior and senior years.
Huskies inside linebackers coach Brian Odom noted before camp that his unit has plenty of experience between its trio of seniors, in addition to Rainey-Sale, who combined to have 11 starts last season, while Al-Uqdah and Manu missed 17 games between them, but are fully healthy going into 2026.
Although it will be hard to crack the two-deep out of camp, Odom did note that there is a plan to use several combinations to keep players fresh and healthy throughout the Big Ten slate, which could pave the way for Robinson to find a role.

The J.J. McCarthy era may already be over with the Minnesota Vikings. He will, barring a shocking roster move, be part of the team in 2026 and 2027. But, barring a shocking leap forward into competence, he will not be the homegrown franchise quarterback for which the Vikings have been searching since Daunte Culpepper was winging deep ***** down the decidedly non-hallowed halls of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
That's because McCarthy, even before Minnesota's first preseason game of the season, has been demoted. There was no hemming and hawing when it came to specifics of competition. There's no "-or-" designation on the depth chart. Head coach Kevin O'Connell understood people paid enough attention to see Kyler Murray was taking the lion's share of snaps with the starting offense in practice. He understood the frustration that came with averaging nearly 11 wins per season without a single playoff victory under his belt.
Thus, he made the logical decision most people expected.
It's another brutal blow in a brief career filled with them for McCarthy. He missed the entirety of his rookie season due to a knee injury. In his stead, journeyman backup Sam Darnold went from "veteran mentor" to "stud quarterback" in a 14-win season. O'Connell opted to stick with the quarterback his front office drafted 10th overall in 2024. That was two slots ahead of Bo Nix, a different kind of flawed-but-intriguing passer who was arguably an ankle injury away from leading the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl last winter.
Waiting for Nix in the big game? That would have been Darnold, who went on to sign a modest three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks before leading them to a world championship.

CHICAGO − If Charles Correa was still looking for confirmation that his transfer from UNLV to Purdue football a year ago was the right move, he got it at Big Ten Media Days.
As the junior linebacker was conducting interviews, sitting to his left were his parents, who raised Correa more than 4,000 miles away in Kuli'ou'ou, Hawaii.
Families of Purdue's Big Ten Media Days attendees - Correa, receiver De'Nylon Morrissette and quarterback Ryan Browne - were invited guests courtesy of Purdue's football program.
Each school is allotted six VIP passes for the event, this year at the Hilton Chicago. Those passes typically get bestowed to university representatives or donors. Head coach Barry Odom, setting a family-first culture in his second year leading the Boilermakers, wanted those closest to his players to get the behind-the-scenes access.
"They're the reason I am here to begin with," Correa said of having his parents by his side. "I owe them everything up to this point in my life, and for them to be able to experience all these cool things with me has been truly special."

The first day of training for the Senior Women’s National Team in Itu, in the countryside of São Paulo, featured coach Arthur Elias’s already familiar man-marking style, but in a different setup. With the participation of youth team coaches Camilla Orlando and Bia Vaz, the players were initially divided into three groups for more individualized monitoring and feedback on and off the field.
The opportunity to train with the Under-20 and Under-17 staff was one of the advantages of this call-up outside the FIFA international window, Arthur explained. “The calendar is tight and there are many commitments; every year there is a South American Championship and a World Cup for both categories. Their participation was very important for today’s planning and training session. It is an important moment of integration with the group,” he said.
In addition to Camilla Orlando, who has just returned from a series of three friendlies in Portugal with the Under-20 team, and Bia Vaz, **** istant coach of the Under-17s and head coach of the Under-15s, other members of the youth national teams are also in Itu. This is the case of Youth Teams manager Gabriel Mastrodomenico, Under-20 **** istant coach Guilherme Giudice, and Under-20 performance **** yst Mateus Junio.
“It is a moment of great exchange and learning. To increasingly understand Arthur’s style of play, the staff’s work, and the preparation of training. We will try to learn a little so we can take what fits and what is possible to the World Cup,” said Camilla, referring to the category’s main tournament, which will be held in Poland between September 5 and 27.
Bia Vaz, meanwhile, intends to put these lessons into practice as early as this week. Between Wednesday the 17th and next Tuesday the 23rd, the coach will be with the Under-15 National Team at Granja Comary, preparing for the Liga Evolución, which will also be played in September in Paraguay.

Virginia’s 2026-27 roster continues to take shape as Ryan Odom looks out west once again for talent. Loyola Marymount transfer Jan Vide announced his commitment to the ‘Hoos earlier this week, becoming the 11th scholarship player in the program.
Vide, a native of Slovenia, averaged 12.1 points, 4.0 ***** ists, and 3.0 rebounds for a Lions team that finished 15-17 overall and ninth in the West Coast Conference at 6-12. He shot 45.3% from the field and 32.3% from beyond the arc. After one year at UCLA, and two at Loyola Marymount, the 6-foot-6, 210-pound combo guard likely arrives in Charlottesville with two remaining years of eligibility, given the pending “five in five” NCAA policy.
While the raw numbers do not look overly impressive, Vide could be an ***** et in a specified role off the bench. In regards to the 2025-26 team, Vide profiles most similarly to Dallin Hall — a large, physical on-ball guard that can provide steady production on both ends without any standout tools. Vide is a capable scorer in a variety of ways around the rim and in the mid-range, with a three-point shot that is only utilized to keep defenses honest.
Last season, Hall was asked to anchor the offense before freshman Chance Mallory was ready to take the keys. Now that the team fully belongs to Mallory, Vide is likely to settle into a much smaller role, serving primarily as a true backup point guard, providing relief minutes when needed. Vide’s volume stats are likely to take a hit, but as a distributor-first that can be more selective in shooting, he should become a more efficient player in a more suitable situation.
Vide will be mixed into a UVA backcourt that already includes Mallory, Sam Lewis, Jurian Dixon, Christian Harmon, and Elijah Gertrude. As a whole, the pure shooting upside is slightly lower without someone like Jacari White, but in turn, the positional versatility is significantly greater. Gertrude, for example, can now realistically earn minutes at the one, two, or three spots, without any pressure to slot into a specified role. Meanwhile, Mallory will have opportunities to spot up off-ball, knowing that he will be surrounded by quality passers and creators.
