The San Francisco Giants unsteady future plans for their rotation just got murkier. On Tuesday, the team announced what many had feared for a few days: that right-handed pitcher Trevor McDonald will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair his throwing arm.
McDonald, who has a 5.12 ERA and a 4.28 FIP on the year, left his last start after feeling discomfort in his elbow during warm-up pitches before the fifth inning. The 25-year old was promptly placed on the 15-Day Injured List with a UCL strain which, unfortunately, leads to Tommy John most of the time. After getting a second opinion from a specialist, McDonald and the Giants decided on the surgery, which will take place next week.
The timing of the surgery means that McDonald will not only miss the rest of this year, but almost certainly all of next season as well. Barring any setbacks, he should have a good chance of being ready to return by the time Spring Training rolls around in 2028. Unfortunately for McDonald, he'll find himself in an unenviable situation then: he'll be not only trying to shake off the injury rust and get back in form, but he'll be out of options, essentially eliminating his leash to get back in a rhythm and proove himself.
But that's a problem for another day. Unfortunately, a whole lot of rehab awaits McDonald before he gets to the stage. And a whole lot of moves await the Giants, who will need to rebuild an already-bad rotation this offseason — and one that is likely about to lose Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle — without McDonald as an option.

Yossi Gozlan: Barring another move, the Sixers will go into the season with an open roster spot and $1.8 million under the first apron hard cap. December 4 is the earliest they could sign a 15th player to a rest-of-season contract. They'll probably keep it open to maintain flexibility through the trade deadline. Detroit — Barring any unforeseen, last-second snag, Javier Báez is back.
"I'm anticipating him being available to us today in the big leagues," manager AJ Hinch said on his weekly segment on MLB Radio.
Báez, 33, hasn't played since severely spraining his ankle ducking and half-sliding trying to avoid a tag at first base in the Tigers' 5-2 loss at Atlanta on April 28.
"I don't know how I didn't break it," Báez said that night after preliminary imaging showed no fracture.
But it was a high-ankle sprain and the recovery process was slow. After having to be shut down from baseball activity for a stretch last month, he's been on a fast track back. He made two rehab starts at Low-A Lakeland before being transferred to Triple-A Toledo over the weekend.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced a resolution Thursday barring the formation of House caucuses organized around race, ethnicity or national origin.
If adopted, the measure would effectively force the dissolution of Democrat-aligned groups, including the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.
The proposal could also affect GOP-affiliated organizations, including the Black Republican Congressional Staff ***** ociation, the GOP Latino Staff ***** ociation and the Republican Asian American Staff ***** ociation.

That surely means anyone from the academy who has a chance of breaking into Michael Carrick's senior squad consistently this season will come from that group.
It means the academy players not involved – including the likes of Gibraltar international James Scanlon, midfielder Jack Moorhouse, who spent the first half of last season at Leyton Orient, and Gabriele Biancheri, who was at Rotherham, will have to seriously consider their next moves.
Australia full-back James Overy also falls into that group.

The biggest transaction the New York Giants have made ahead of training camp might actually be the one they did not make.
Third-year wide receiver Malik Nabers has manage to avoid placement on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list ahead of training camp. New York placed three players on the list – tight end Thomas Fidone II, defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris and defensive lineman Sam Roberts – but notably left Nabers off of it.
Nabers, 22, missed all but four games in his second season in the NFL after tearing his ACL in a game against the Los Angeles Chargers. The young wideout was coming off of a Pro Bowl rookie season, and his injury in 2025 was a major blow to a Giants offense that was just starting to find its footing under then-rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart.
The fact that the Giants did not need to put Nabers on the PUP list is a very positive sign for his recovery from the torn ACL. As New York ramps up its preseason preparation in West Virginia starting on July 28, Nabers will be among training camp participants as he works back up to full speed. Barring any setbacks, the young wideout may be in line to play during the first four weeks of the season.

The New Orleans Saints will be faced with some difficult decisions later this summer, as they'll be forced to trim their 90-man roster down before the start of the NFL regular season. While many of us have a good idea of what most of the roster will look like by then, there are still plenty of question marks at several positions, making training camp and the preseason all the more important.
For now, though, using spring projections from several New Orleans media outlets -- our own John Sigler, LouisianaSports.Net's Ross Jackson, and the four-man crew at NewOrleans.Football -- we've put together a list of the players who appear to be locks for the Saints' 2026 roster heading into the season. LAS VEGAS -- Brooklyn Nets forward Julius Randle came to the Nets this offseason after being with the Minnesota Timberwolves and competing for championships over the past two seasons. While Brooklyn likely has hopes of taking another step forward next season, that step may not be anything close to getting to the NBA Finals. Randle is understanding of that, but also sees the upside.
"I really think it’s just mindset and approach. The league is more balanced than it has ever been. Every game is a different game, every game matters," Randle said to the media in Las Vegas over the weekend. Randle, 31, joins a Brooklyn team that is coming off a 20-62 record in the 2025-26 season and despite adding the three-time All-Star, the Nets are likely winning around 30 games, barring any unforeseen moves.
"So, it's different obviously than the team I was on, than I was at in Minnesota; but I believe in our team. I believe in the talent that we have," Randle continued. "And I think it's really just how we approach every single game. It's really about what we believe as a group and not the outside noise or the expectation. It’s our expectation amongst ourselves, and what we believe as a group."
Randle is coming off another solid season as he averaged 21.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, 5.0 ******* ists, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 48.1% from the field and 31.5% from behind the three-point line in 79 games played for the Timberwolves. As Minnesota was looking to return this summer, they traded Randle and the No. 28 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft (forward Joshua Jefferson) to the Nets in exchange for the No. 33 pick.
Randle goes from playing alongside Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert to sharing the floor with forward Michael Porter Jr. and guard Egor Demin, among others. Despite the fact that the Nets are leaning into the development of the younger players on the roster in Demin and guard Mikel Brown Jr., Randle is confident in what the team currently has and it seems like it will come down to how the team prepares for the upcoming season in training camp.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Two transgender girls who were the first to challenge President Donald Trump's executive order, "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports," have withdrawn their lawsuit in New Hampshire based on a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upheld state bans on transgender athletes in girls' sports and their own personal hardships, their lawyer said.
"This case was always about two courageous young girls who simply wanted the same opportunities as their peers to participate in school life," their lawyer, Chris Erchull of GLAD Law, said in a statement Thursday. "Their willingness to stand up to extraordinary hostility made clear the human cost of laws that target transgender youth."
The teenagers, Parker Tirrell and Iris Turmelle, took on Trump's executive order last year, amending their 2024 complaint against New Hampshire's law on banning transgender girls from school sports. A federal judge had granted a court order allowing them to play as the case proceeded.

When the NBA's 2026-27 season begins in October, all indications are that Fred VanVleet will return to his previous spot as starting point guard for the Houston Rockets.
Barring a setback, that would include medical clearance from the team's doctors to resume his usual workload.
"Signs point to VanVleet being ready to start for Houston from the jump," Houston Chronicle beat writer Varun Shankar wrote in a story published Wednesday.
"The veteran point guard will be about a year removed from his torn ACL and meniscus when the Rockets begin training camp."
Neither VanVleet nor the Rockets ruled out a return in the 2025-26 season, but that would have required a historically short ACL recovery window of seven months or less. Thus, it was inherently unlikely.
Barring a setback, that would include medical clearance from the team's doctors to resume his usual workload.

A number of reports have suggested that a sale would be considered this summer, and on the back of this, Manchester United have been heavily linked with making a big move for his services, although all of this is immaterial now.
Tchouameni's situation has looked precarious ever since he came to blows with Federico Valverde during a training session in May. Real Madrid gave their strong backing to the now-captain, which had led to doubts about whether the France international could continue – but now, he certainly will be staying.
As per Diario AS, Tchouameni is close to agreeing a new five-year contract with Real Madrid. Talks between his representatives and the club have intensified in the last 24 hours, and barring a major surprise, he will sign his new deal later in the summer when he returns to the club after the 2026 World Cup is over.

Byron Young has established himself as one of the best young edge rushers in football, but The Athletic's Nate Atkins suggests it's "very unlikely" the Rams retain him beyond the 2026 season.
The numbers make clear why Young's price tag is about to become a problem. In 2025, he set career highs across the board, leading the Rams in sacks (12.5), quarterback hits (29) and tackles for loss (12) while finishing fifth on the team in total tackles. All production that has vastly outpaced his third-round draft slot in 2023.
That kind of tape typically points to a market-resetting extension. Instead, it points toward a difficult goodbye. Young's next deal is expected to be worth well over $100 million, with some projections landing around four years and $145 million.
The Rams' own spending has made that math even harder. Los Angeles' trade for Myles Garrett and the subsequent reworking of his contract signaled the team is prioritizing its investment at the position elsewhere, leaving less room to also pay Young top-of-market money. Even though his transfer fee was not too high, Barça preferred to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United instead. Even though Gordon's fee was higher, his salary was preferable to the Catalan club.
What's ironic is neither Rashford nor United seem thrilled with each other. It's understood the Manchester club would be willing to part with him for the right price, but so far, no club has taken the deal. Rashford himself made overtures towards Barcelona, showing he wanted to stay, but ultimately, Barcelona would not agree to keep him at a salary Rashford was comfortable with.

The Mark Sanchez criminal trial as once again been delayed.
Via Jarrett Lewis of WIBC, the trial date has been pushed from July 13 to September 8, one day before the start of the 2026 NFL regular season.
It's the fifth time the trial has been continued. The final pre-trial conference had been set for today, July 8.
Eventually, the trial will happen. (We think.) Barring a plea deal, Sanchez will stand trial on multiple charges arising from an October 2025 alley fight with Perry Tole, a 69-year-old truck driver.
Sanchez had been in town to call a Raiders-Colts game on October 5. Fox later parted ways with Sanchez.

Millions of Americans dared to dream the impossible dream as Fox’s World Cup ad campaign aptly described throughout the U.S. Men’s National Team’s once-in-a-generation World Cup run on home soil. Alas, many of those millions of Americans were left with the same feelings of emptiness and disappointment, as has become so familiar for men’s soccer in this country, when the USMNT’s run came to a screeching halt at the hands of Belgium in a last-16 tilt on Monday evening.
It was the fourth consecutive time the American men have exited a World Cup in the round-of-16, barring the disastrous 2018 tournament that the Yanks failed to even qualify for. As you probably heard many times throughout Monday’s telecast, one would have to trace all the way back to 2002 to find a USMNT World Cup run beyond the final 16; a quarterfinal berth that still proves to be the U.S.’s only one in the modern World Cup format.
But judging by the social media reaction on Monday night and throughout the day on Tuesday, and the record-setting viewership figures USMNT games were posting throughout this World Cup, there was a resonance with this team that hasn’t necessarily been the case in prior years. Fox is touting an audience of 30 million viewers for Monday’s game, a figure that will likely increase once Nielsen releases its final tally. More than 26 million viewers watched the first knockout game against Bosnia and Herzegovina. And USMNT group-stage games were clocking in at near 20 million viewers. Those figures aren’t even counting Telemundo’s Spanish-language audiences.
To put these audiences in perspective, the USMNT averaged viewership comparable to a solid Sunday Night Football game or the NFL Wild Card round during its run. The English-language audience for Monday’s game against Belgium will likely surpass the College Football Playoff National Championship between Indiana and Miami (30.1 million viewers) when all is set and done.

As we prepare to present our Providence Journal All-State teams for the spring season, we're going to to look back at the winter high school sports season, and highlight our high school Players of the Year for those sports.
There are the the winners that our staff selected in each sport and presented awards to at our June 18 All-State Awards Show held at The Providence Performing Arts Center, featuring URI wide receiver Marquis Buchanan.
We did our part, and now we're asking for your help. We're asking you to select the Longplex athlete of the season, for each of the three seasons on the high school sports calendar. Last week, we highlighted the fall players of the year - and North Kingstown volleyball star Kayleigh Garrepy won that poll. Now, we want to hear from you about the Longplex Athlete of the Winter. With Bousquet on the court, Moses Brown was a ***** le contender, reaching the Division I final and falling in a nailbiter against eventual champ Barrington in the state tournament. This season Bousquet scored her 2,000th career point, averaged over 27 points per game and earned Gatorade Player of the Year. She’ll continue her career at Marist University.

I was personally really sad to see Dennis Cirkin leave this summer. Not only because he’d been with us on our journey to European football, but because whenever he seemed to be looking like he could go to the next level, an injury would find its way to him.
After the 24-year-old finally hung up his wrist brace on Wearside, and with the seemingly imminent departure of Arthur Masuaku, it leaves Reinildo Mandava as the Lads’ only true left-back. That is, barring a Lazarus-esque development from Leo Hjelde or Aji Alese.
Similarly to Xhaka, who I looked at in my prior piece, the Mozambican is the wrong side of 30 and will need rotating to be at his best next season. On the surface, this looks to be the one area of squad planning that has seemingly been neglected since last year’s promotion.
Melker Ellborg seems to be the heir apparent to Roefs. The January additions of Angulo and Ta Bi strengthened our depth on the wings. Should Ghisolfi decide to stop playing hard to get with Geertruida, then we have plenty of options at right-back. I’ve been really impressed with how the recruitment team have been proactive in fleshing out our squad so far.
I’m going to try to do my part for Florent here and discuss some potential options at left-back that could learn from, and cover for, Mandava next year. We’re going to look at this from a numerical point of view, but also try to identify some potential market opportunities if they’re out there.

The Blue Jays, at least on paper, are still an elite team, and barring something drastic happening over the next few weeks, should be buyers at the trade deadline.
There doesn't seem to be much of a scenario in which the Blue Jays don't buy at the deadline, at least according to the latest report, which should make all fans happy about a potential exciting trade deadline that doesn't see Toronto sell, but instead buy.
"With a massive payroll and the glow of a World Series run still lingering at Rogers Centre, the Jays would have to plummet out of the race to become sellers ahead of the deadline. Given the current mess that is the AL wild-card race, that'd take a disastrous start to July," Mitch Bannon of The Athletic wrote.
The one thing the Blue Jays have to watch out for over the next few weeks is the American League Wild Card getting away from them.

Olympic gold medalist and six-time world champion Jordan Burroughs has an opponent for his Real American Freestyle (RAF) debut.
Last month, RAF announced that Burroughs signed with the promotion and would debut at the RAF 12 event on Aug. 22 at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Now, the promotion has confirmed that Burroughs will face off versus UFC Welterweight and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Sean Brady in a catchweight main event.
I'm not an odds maker, but I would expect something like -10,000 would be appropriate here? Barring a freak injury, it's hard to give Brady any chance here. He's a great grappler and has excellent MMA wrestling, but Burroughs is a different animal on the wrestling mat. There might be some concern that Burroughs is 37 years old, but he was wrestling at an elite level just two years ago.
Unless guillotines are suddenly allowed, Brady is in for a rough night.

Robert Griffin III, the former NFL quarterback who’s now a Fox Sports **** yst, joined other sports celebrities in slamming the red card that U.S. World Cup star Folarin Balogun received on Wednesday.
But Griffin did it memorably and hilariously.
Balogun, the U.S. team’s leading scorer in the World Cup, had already put the Americans ahead 1-0 in their eventual 2-0 round of 32 win over Bosnia Herzegovina. In the second half he stepped on the ankle of Bosnian player Tarik Muharemovic’s ankle as the two approached the ball. Balogun got a red card, ejecting him from the match and barring him from the Americans’ round of 16 clash against Belgium on Monday.

“USA has its best chance to win a World Cup and a bogus Red Card is given to our best player to keep him out of the next game in the Round of 16?” he wrote. “THEY DON’T WANT TO SEE US WIN AND HAVE TO CALL IT SOCCER.”

A quick word on Jaylen Brown , as his sticky situation continues to loom so large over this offseason. Barring a drastic and unforeseen change in the market, the Boston Celtics will have to significantly lower their asking price if they plan on trading him anytime soon .

Their defense may get even more depleted: Jacob Trouba appears to be on the way out.

And at least in some viewpoints, it's not a surprise.

The current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between MLB owners and the MLB Players ***** ociation will expire on Dec. 1, 2026. Barring an unlikely agreement before that time, a lockout will commence thereafter.
The two sides are a gulf apart, with current concerns ranging from the implementation of a salary cap system and contract duration limits — which the owners desire, but many of the players view as an attempt to limit their earning potential — to how teams will spend the money they receive from revenue sharing; players want to ensure more of the funds, ostensibly earmarked for competitive balance purposes, land in their pockets.
The MLBPA released a statement on Thursday, June 25 criticising the league's first proposal as designed to drive a rift between the players themselves with inconsequential sweeteners… and maintaining that the players are united as they work toward a new agreement.
Catcher Henry Davis, who serves as the Pirates' MLBPA representative, described the union's perspective, saying that the proposals the league puts forward (and the concessions offered) will change as the deadline comes closer.
"I think it's frustrating, but not surprising, given most of MLB's tactics generally work off the deadline. They're making offers that — I think — they know exactly how we'll interpret them," Davis said. "And I think the unifying thing is because at times, they'll try to divide certain sects of players: free agents versus pre-arb, et cetera. But everybody couldn't be more unified."
