World champion Wu Yize set up an intriguing second-round tie against former Crucible winner Kyren Wilson at the British Open after both won their opening matches.
China's Wu beat compatriot Liu Hongyu 4-3 in Cheltenham, while 2024 world champion Wilson was a 4-1 winner against Austria's Florian Nuessle.
Last year's British Open champion Shaun Murphy was joined by Ding Junhui, Barry Hawkins, Judd Trump and John Higgins in progressing to the second round.
However, three-time world champion Mark Williams lost 4-0 to David Gilbert, world number two Neil Robertson fell 4-1 to Pang Junxu, and 2023 world champion Luca Brecel fell 4-3 to Chris Wakelin.
Mark Joyce, who replaced Ronnie O'Sullivan after the seven-time world champion withdrew because of medical reasons, beat Poland's Mateusz Baranowski 4-1.

PFL lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov had some choice words for the UFC's top-ranked lightweights.
Nurmagomedov (22-0) is a free agent after retaining his belt with a first-round knockout out Archie Colgan at PFL New York last month. The 28-year-old is looking to either re-sign with the PFL or ink a deal with the UFC.
Nurmagomedov has beaten all of PFL's top lightweights, including Paul Hughes twice. He disagrees with the notion that the best fighters are only in the UFC, and picked apart the current rankings and matchups that have taken place in the octagon.
"There's a narrative that if you don't compete in the UFC, you're not on that high level, and I don't agree with that," Nurmagomedov told Sport24 (h/t Red Corner MMA). "Just look at the guys who are in the UFC top 10. They just keep fighting each other and maintain their top-10 spots. Benoit Saint Denis, he was 4-0 then lost to Dustin Poirier, then he lost to (Renato) Moicano, and won three times after that, and then lost in the first round within 30 seconds (vs. Pimblett), but he's still in the top five, oddly enough.
"Pimblett lost to a 37-year-old veteran, but he's the No. 1 contender now, right? Or No. 2. 17-0 Topuria, who had been praising himself as the greatest, he lost, quit on the stool, saying he wasn't going to continue. Arman (Tsarukyan), he lost to (Mateusz) Gamrot, he lost to Islam (Makhachef). He is just waiting it out, fighting once a year and saying he's the best fighter in the world. While he fought twice, I defended my **** le four times. The UFC PR machine is very powerful. The brand is very solid, but I wouldn't say they all put on such great fights."

PFL lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov hasn't entered the UFC yet, but he's already talking trash about the quality of opposition he may face when he gets there.
Nurmagomedov fought the last fight on his PFL contract last month, and recently revealed he turned down a $2 million per fight offer from the organization in order to wait out the 90 day exclusive negotiation period and see what other promotions might offer him. Promotions like the UFC, where he could finally get his due as one of the best lightweights in the world.
In an interview with Sport24, Usman pushed back on the idea that the top fighters are all in the UFC.
"They say if you don't fight in the UFC, it's not the same level. I disagree with this," he said. "Just look at the guys in the UFC who sit in the top 10 and they just fight amongst themselves and keep the top ten closed. For example, Benoit Saint Denis. Won 4, lost to Dustin Poirier, lost to 'Money' Moicano, lost 3 more. Lost in 30 seconds. [Michael] Chandler. Top 15. He's there. Lost to [Paddy] Pimblett."
"[Ilia] Topuria, who praised himself endlessly, lost. Quit on the stool. Said 'I don't wanna continue.' Arman [Tsarukyan] lost to [Mateusz] Gamrot, and he lost to Islam [Makhachev]. The largest indoor pickleball event held anywhere in the world was held last weekend, with 3,400+ players descending into Birmingham, England for the 2026 English Open, powered by the ****** ociation of Pickleball Players (APP) and continuing a multi-year relationship between the US-based tour and the biggest European organization out there.
Let's do a quick recap of the results, highlighting the winners, the upsets, and the top International players who made waves. The event featured a slew of pros from the US, joined by some of Europe's top players and even some visitors from the East.
Ignasi De Rueda, who plays out of Barcelona and is one of the top Spanish players who plays primarily out of the continent survived the massive draw to take gold. In the final, he topped APP Next player Jake Bower. Bower had taken out top APP player Livornese in the quarters and Poland star Mateusz Matysik to earn his finals spot. Meanwhile, De rueda crushed another APP Next star Jayden Broderick in the semis before a tight 11-9 third game win for the ****** le.
In a great display of the spread of the game, the semis of the Women's draw featured players from Spain, Croatia, Netherlands, and the USA. Of course, the Croatian actually plays in the States, while the Dutch player primarily plays in Australia, so you just can never tell. Dutch star Roos van Reek topped APP next star Brooke Revuelta in one semi, while Croatian-born Domenika Turkovic (currently No. 4 on the APP tour) made fast work of Barcelona-based in the other. In the final, Turkovic outlasted van Reek for the ****** le.

This is the 33rd UFC appearance for Barboza (24-14), who has competed at 145 and 155 pounds during his 16-year run with the promotion. Lightweight contender Mateusz Gamrot released a statement addressing his UFC Vegas 120 main event loss to rising star Quillan Salkilld.
Salkilld put the rest of the lightweight division on notice after submitting Gamrot in the first round. It was his 13th consecutive win and earned him a fourth Performance of the Night bonus in a row.
In his statement, Gamrot emphasized that his story will go on and lessons were learned.
"I have lost. But that failure doesn't end my story," Gamrot wrote on Instagram. "For many years I have been following this path that taught me sports, just like life, we don't always get what we work hard for. Sometimes instead of winning, we learn the lesson. Sometimes, instead of a raised hand, there is silence that forces us to look deeper into ourselves.
"I've already been to the peak. I have been down too. I win, I lose, I fall, and I come back And that's why I know my road doesn't end yet. You can defeat me in one evening, but you can't take away my faith, character and will to fight. I believe there are still great times ahead of me. Next chapters that I haven't written yet. Because a man is not defined by failure. He's defined by what he'll do after he loses. You can stay down or you can get up. I will rise up! With my head held high With confidence in yourself. Grateful for the road I've come, and hungry for what's ahead. Because as long as you go the story goes on.

UFC Vegas 120 has come and gone. While it wasn't a stacked card from top to bottom, it produced one of the year's most impressive performances.
Quillan Salkilld came into Saturday night as one of the brighter prospects at 155 and in the UFC in general. After a dominant win over the experienced Mateusz Gamrot, expectations are soaring for how good the Australian fighter can be.

Salkilld secured the victory via first-round submission. This was one-way traffic for as long as it lasted. Salkilld caught Gamrot on the feet early with a left hook and then dominated on the ground before finding Gamrot's neck for the choke.
This was a big jump in competition. Before Saturday night, Salkilld's biggest win was against an aging Beneil Dariush, who is 1-4 in his last five fights and 37 years old. Gamrot isn't a spring chicken by any means at 35, but he was at least coming off a win against a tough Esteban Ribovics.

Mateusz Gamrot suffered a devastating setback in his long-shot pursuit of a lightweight ****** le in Saturday's UFC Fight Night 284 main event.
Gamrot (26-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) was swept up in the whirlwind rise of Quillan Salkilld (13-1 MMA, 6-0 UFC) in their headliner at Meta APEX in Las Vegas, finding little success before he was submitted inside the first round.
It's only the second time Gamrot has been finished in his career, and it comes at a difficult time for the 35-year-old. He was just starting to rebuild momentum after short-notice main event loss to Charles Oliveira in October, and his extremely willingness to take on any of the rising names at 155-pound reared its ugly head here.
Time will tell if this loss for Gamrot will ultimately be part of some sort of championship journey for Salkilld, who is being rightfully praised for the performance because everyone holds the Polish fighter in that high of regard. Gamrot doesn't have time given his age, though, at least according to the history of elite-tier divisional competition.
The upside for him, however, is that he is extremely dedicated to the sport and seemingly lives a pure life. He will work hard to bounce back from this, and will surely accept whatever name UFC gives to him.

Everyone knows Mateusz Gamrot (26-5 MMA, 9-5 UFC) is one of the toughest tests in the lightweight division, and that's what made Saturday's clash at Meta APEX in Las Vegas so compelling. Salkilld (13-1 MMA, 6-0 UFC) aced the test in every way, forcing his Polish foe to tap inside the first round.
It was Salkilld's masterpiece, and it was a performance that should put every 155 pound fighter in the UFC on notice. If he can do that to Gamrot in the pressure-filled moment of his first main event, it's not impossible to fathom him doing it to the division's other elite, as well.
What's scarier about him now, too, is that the 26-year-old Salkilld is only going to grow in comfort and confidence after a dismantling Gamrot in such a fashion.
It's not only that Salkilld got Gamrot to tap, it's what unfolded before that. He rocked him in the first true striking exchange, then from there showed strong submission defense, put Gamrot in uncomfortable positions then stayed a step ahead until he got the choke that ended it.

Facing grappling specialist Mateusz Gamrot in Saturday's main event at Meta Apex in Las Vegas, Salkilld stifled Gamrot's attempts to dominate the fight on the ground before pulling off a stunning submission in the final minute of the opening round. It was just the second-time ever that Gamrot had been forced to tap and Salkilld's incredible feat sent social media into a frenzy.

And now that more fans can take in a show like Saturday's, they got a treat out of the gate.
A Salkilld win by submission over a credentialed wrestler and grappler like Gamrot was one of the least likely predicted outcomes in the headliner. But afterward, Salkilld said his rear-naked choke with 35 seconds left in the first is just the type of performance lightweights can expect – and he has his sights set on the top five.
"I just proved I'm the real f*cking deal now. These top five (lightweights) better (watch out)," Salkilld said on the microphone with Daniel Cormier. "I believe I can get it done within the first minute or the last minute. ... I think I deserve someone who's in the top five or close to it."
Salkilld tried to get a quick start and took the center quickly. In some tight exchanges early, Salkilld landed and forced Gamrot to look for a takedown – not at all unexpected. He got a single-leg briefly, but also appeared to be hurt.

The card will take place at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. UFC Fight Night will be headlined by a matchup at 155 pounds, when Mateusz Gamrot takes on uprising prospect Quillan Salkilld. Gamrot (26-4) is coming off a submission victory over Esteban Ribovics at UFC 327 in April.
Since his UFC debut in 2025, Salkilld (12-1) has put together a 5-0 record. Only one of those wins have gone the full distance. In May, the native of Australia defeated Beneil Dariush by TKO. It was his third consecutive win by stoppage, along with the Performance of the Night bonus.

Quillan Salkilld has officially arrived as a serious contender at lightweight following his victory over Mateusz Gamrot in the UFC Vegas 120 main event.
Undefeated thus far in his UFC career, Salkilld was supposed to face his toughest test to date on Saturday but outside of a leg lock attempt from Gamrot early in the opening round, the Australian had his way with the veteran top-10 fighter.
After battering Gamrot on the feet, Salkilld decided to show off his ground game after scoring a perfectly timed takedown and then eventually transitioning to take the back. That's where Salkilld locked up the rear-naked choke with Gamrot tapping out to end the fight at 4:25 in the opening round.
That extended Salkilld's overall win streak to 13 in a row including six straight wins in the UFC.
"That feels f*cking good," Salkilld said after the win. "I just proved I'm the real f*cking deal. That's just how I fight. I want to take it to you where you think you're safe. I want to use all the weapons I have available in the **** nal. I believe I can get it done with the first minute or the last minute."

This was a big spot for both fighters, but especially Salkilld as this was his first UFC headliner. Many thought the 26-year-old Australian had the skills to keep climbing the lightweight ranks, but once Salkilld was pitted up against Gamrot things quickly became real. It was up to Salkilld to prove he's got the chops to fight the best 155-pound fighters in the world.
Salkilled did exactly that as he clipped Gamrot early into the first round with a short left hook. That forced Gamrot to quickly go to his wrestling and try to drag Salkilld to the ground. To Gamrot's surprise, Salkilld showcased an impressive ground game as he reversed multiple positions and was able to get back to his feet.
Moments later, it was Salkilld who changed levels and scored a takedown on Gamrot. It was a shock to Gamrot since he's the one usually landing on top. Salkilld eventually work his way to Gamrot's back and locked in the rear-naked choke. Gamrot fought for a few seconds before tapping out and handing Salkilld his sixth-straight UFC win.

Quillan Salkilld vs. Mateusz Gamrot squared off in a Lightweight bout earlier tonight (Sat., Aug. 8, 2026) inside Meta Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada for UFC Vegas 120.
Salkilld was sharp early, stinging Gamrot with jabs and low kicks before an early left hook rocked the veteran. Gamrot dove onto a single leg and used the following transitions to recover, but he couldn't ground the strong young Aussie. Gamrot attacked a heel hook and definitely threatened Salkilld, though he couldn't finish the hold. Salkilld timed a takedown beautifully and advanced into back mount. Despite some excellent scrambling from Gamrot, Salkilld was able to stay on the back and continue attacking the neck.
After a few adjustments, Gamrot was forced to submit.
WOW! This was an incredibly impressive and well-rounded performance from Salkilld. Not only did he pick apart Gamrot on the feet — where we expected Salkilld to have the advantage — but he more than kept up with Gamrot on the canvas. He forced Gamrot to take risks like diving for legs, and Salkilld was able to gain top position as a result of his dominance.
Once on top, his ability to flow through Gamrot's scrambles to maintain the back was absolutely elite jiu-jitsu. Salkilld knifed through Gamrot like ****** ody else, and he's really looking the part of a ****** le contender right now.

"I just proved I'm the real f***ing deal," Salkilld said in his postfight interview.
Going into the fight, the conventional wisdom was that the longer and younger Salkilld would need to rely on his striking to hold his own with a top 10 lightweight. Instead, he freely grappled with Gamrot and eventually gained a decisive advantage.
"That's just how I fight," Salkilld said. "I don't care who the f*** you are, I'm going to take it to you and all the aspects where you think you're safe. I'm not going to be fighting on the back foot the whole time, just jabbing and allowing him to punch and wrestle."

Gamrot has been inconsistent since switching KSW for UFC and he's coming off a decent win over Esteban Ribovics, which followed a very lopsided loss to Charles Oliveira (re-live that here). His inconsistency has left him on the outside looking in in regard to UFC's Lightweight ******* le picture.
Salkilld burst onto the scene in 2024 and has looked sensational with his quick knockouts and dominant wrestling. A win over Gamrot will catapult him up the rankings and set up some fights with the real elites of the division.

Foro now targets the body, then goes back to theleg. Canuto answers with a left hook and a jab. Another leg kickfrom Canuto. For lands a left hook to the body, along with anotherhard low kick. Canuto responds with two leg kicks of her own. Niceone-one-two from Canuto. Foro staggers her counterpart with a lefthook, then takes aim at the lead leg. Canuto shoots on the hips. Noluck on the takedown. Midway through the round. Multi-punch volleyfrom Foro, who follows up with a leg kick. Canuto unleashes a righthand over the top. Foro jobs at the body and fires a straightright. Canuto scores with a leg kick. Ninety seconds on the clock.Front kick to the body from Foro, who fends off a jab and connectswith another low kick. Canuto with a leg kick and a one-two, thenwhiffs on a Superman punch. Sharp jabs from Foro, along with a legkick. They circle in the center. Canuto jabs to the body but eatsanother powerful leg kick, followed by a straight right and twoleft hooks to the body. Foro has her reeling with power punches atthe end of the round.

Foro clearly out in front at the start of Round 2. Lack offirepower definitely an issue for Canuto. Foro jabs at the body,resets and avoids the return fire. Canuto changes levels andsecures a takedown, then moves behind her counterpart. She takesher time, punches the side of the head and sets both hooks. Forosuddenly in real danger. Canuto bites down on a body triangle,threatens the neck and forces her opponent onto all fours. Foroeats a few punches to the side of the head while trying to controla wrist. Midway through the round. Action stalls. Canuto frees oneof her hands and scores with hammerfists. Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is live TODAY (Sat., Aug. 8, 2026) with UFC Vegas 120, streaming live online via Paramount+. The event goes down at the familiar META APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. Our main event tonight is Mateusz Gamrot vs. Quillan Salkilld.
We are back at UFC's new and improve APEX venue for the first time since April (latest renovation details here). And we've got a card that doesn't look too great on paper. However, many thought that about UFC Belgrade … and look what happened there. Tonight's ho-hum card, on paper, is topped by a pivotal 155-pound showdown between top-ranked contenders in Gamrot (No. 8) versus Salkilld (No. 12).
Gamrot has been inconsistent since switching KSW for UFC and he's coming off a decent win over Esteban Ribovics, which followed a very lopsided loss to Charles Oliveira (re-live that here). His inconsistency has left him on the outside looking in in regard to UFC's Lightweight ****** le picture.
Salkilld burst onto the scene in 2024 and has looked sensational with his quick knockouts and dominant wrestling. Last time out he put away Beneil Dariush in quick fashion, showing the mixed martial arts (MMA) world that he means business. A win over Gamrot will catapult him up the rankings and set up some fights with the real elites of the division.
The co-main event is Diego Ferreira vs. Billy Quarantillo. That's at Lightweight, too, but these guys are nowhere near the rankings. They have a combined 16-12 record in UFC and both are coming off knockout losses. Rounding out the main card are Darren Elkins vs. Yadier del Valle, Amanda Lemos vs. Alexia Thainara and Ty Miller vs. Billy Ray Goff.

In a game of small distinctions, Mateusz Gamrot — who fights this weekend against Quillan Salkilld at the UFC Apex — has a pretty good one in that he beat Arman Tsarukyan back in 2022. This is an excellent feat by industry standards. In the last six years, 10 other men have tried do just that and 10 men have failed. Most recently, Dan Hooker came up woefully short in his attempt. Tsarukyan submitted Hooker in the second round of their fight last November and made it look relatively easy in doing so.
With five straight wins, Tsarukyan is good enough for other fighters to measure their own standards of greatness, which is its own small distinction.
Yet, despite Dana White pinky swearing that Tsarukyan would be next for a ******* le shot if he beat Hooker in Qatar, here we are over eight months later and … guess what?
He still hasn't fought for the ******* le. And it doesn't appear he will anytime soon.
On Wednesday, the UFC announced that Tsarukyan will face Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331 in September, in a five-round non-title fight, meaning it's exceedingly unlikely he'll fight for the belt in 2026. Though it's a fine fight — in fact it's crazy good, far more intriguing than a rematch with Charles Oliveira, even if it were for the BMF — it can't help but feel like Arman is forever on the outside looking in. He has been in Dana's doghouse since he backed out of his ******* le chance at the eleventh hour of UFC 311 with an injury, and he didn't do himself any favors by headbutting Hooker during the face-offs in Qatar.
