Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert says his players "deserve all the credit" after they beat Bristol City 4-1 on Saturday.
Two goals from Cyle Larin, and strikes from Kuryu Matsuki and Finn Azaz capped off an excellent performance, and extended their unbeaten run in the league to six matches.
"If you see the block of games that we come from it's not easy, especially if you then face a team who had a whole week to prepare," he told BBC Radio Solent.
"The midweek game against Swansea we knew that we have to run more and we did run more and more intense than we have all season.
"Obviously that takes takes a toll, that's just the reality so early on in the season and then it was just different energy levels on the pitch today."

Belgium took the wind out of the United States men's national team's sails this summer during the 2026 World Cup. Before that humbling 4-1 defeat in the Round of 16, a controversial decision from FIFA effectively made the USMNT an enemy, at least according to Belgium defender Thomas Meunier.
The 35-year-old Meunier, who has 83 caps for Belgium and just represented the country in his third World Cup, explained to The Athletic that, because of head-turning call to suspend Folarin Balogun's red-card suspension, "everyone wanted us to beat America."
"Everyone wanted them to be eliminated," he added more than two months after the July 6 match, per The Athletic.
Balogun himself has admitted that, even though he was relieved to be on the pitch for the knockout match, hearing that he'd be part of the squad was bittersweet.
"My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team, but when I kind of started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy, and I could almost see within my teammates a bit of nerves because it's something that's so unique," Balogun told "CBS Mornings" in July.

David Moyes has made it clear, Jack Grealish is in line to start for Everton against Tottenham this weekend. After a short outing from the bench in the recent defeat to Manchester United, the Everton manager believes the 31-year-old is now ready for a bigger role.
That matters, because Everton need quality and they need it quickly. Their transfer window closed with more frustration than progress. Grealish returned on loan for a second straight season, but the late collapse of a move for Monaco striker Folarin Balogun left Moyes with a squad short on numbers and light on attacking options.
Moyes did not overcomplicate the issue. "I think Jack is special – I think he is ready to play, yes," said Moyes. "I think Jack is probably a boy who needs the football [matches] more than he needs the training sometimes."
That sums up Grealish well enough. He is a rhythm player. He needs minutes, contact, pressure, and repetition. Training helps, but matches sharpen him. Moyes sees that clearly and added: "I think game time helps Jack. In ways, that's him still building up to his best but, I've got to say, he's had a good week of training and he's beginning to look ready to start."

Texas State football head coach GJ Kinne didn't hold back much after Saturday's 59-7 loss to Texas.
Sure, the Longhorns' talent was glaring. They tore through the Bobcats' defense, while their punter never left the sideline. Texas State's offense showed some signs of life against a front seven that features a couple of future NFL players. But Kinne said the mental mishaps frustrated him more than anything else.

On August 6, Installed Building Products (NYSE:IBP) reported second-quarter results that told two different stories at once. Net revenue hit a second-quarter record of $777.8 million, yet profit and margins moved the other way, and the board still found room to raise the dividend for the fifth straight year.
The headline number was $777.8 million in net revenue, up 2.3% from $760.3 million a year earlier. That growth came almost entirely from outside the core insulation installation business. Other revenue, which covers IBP's manufacturing and distribution operations, jumped 50.4% to $67.1 million, while commercial work inside the Installation segment posted same-branch sales growth of 10.4%. Acquisitions did heavy lifting too. The company closed Diamond Energy Systems in May, then Harkraft and Builders Hardware of South Carolina in July, adding roughly $30 million in combined annual revenue. Year to date, IBP has acquired about $59 million in revenue and still expects to reach at least $100 million for all of 2026.
The balance sheet backed that ambition, with $394.5 million in cash on hand at quarter-end. Management also kept returning cash to shareholders, repurchasing about 365,000 shares for $76.2 million in the quarter, with $398 million still available under the buyback authorization through March 2027. The board topped it off by declaring a third-quarter dividend of $0.39 per share, payable September 30 to holders of record on September 15, more than a 5% increase over last year's third-quarter payout.
The strength was uneven. Residential same-branch installation sales fell 6.1% for the quarter, and job volume excluding heavy commercial work dropped 5.2%, evidence that the housing slowdown is landing directly on IBP's biggest business line. That mix shift showed up in the bottom line. Net income fell to $64.9 million, or $2.43 per diluted share, from $69.0 million and $2.52 a year ago. Adjusted EBITDA slid 2.3% to $130.9 million, with the margin compressing to 16.9% from 17.6%.
Gross profit margin also narrowed to 33.3% from 34.2%, and the company pointed to a specific cause: the faster-growing Other segment carries a 24.7% gross margin, well below the 36.5% margin in core Installation work, so revenue mix worked against profitability even as total sales climbed. Higher fuel costs added further pressure on gross margin, while administrative expense crept up as a percentage of revenue, driven by higher medical insurance costs. CEO Jeff Edwards acknowledged the backdrop directly, saying the company expects affordability and consumer confidence to keep weighing on the residential market.

On August 4, Archrock (NYSE:AROC) posted second-quarter results that told two different stories at once. Revenue slipped to $371.2 million from $383.2 million a year earlier, yet net income climbed to $66.7 million, and earnings per share rose to $0.38. That gap between a shrinking top line and a growing bottom line is the puzzle this quarter leaves investors to sort out.
The clearest bull signal came from a new long-term agreement with an existing strategic customer covering roughly 665,000 horsepower, structured with an eight-year base term and a two-year extension option. That kind of commitment locks in cash flow well into the next decade and reinforces management's multi-year growth capital expenditure guidance of $1.4 billion to $1.6 billion **** ulatively from 2027 through 2030. The core contract operations segment backed that confidence with real numbers. Revenue there rose 3% to $329.3 million, and adjusted gross margin improved to 71% from 70%, with period-end utilization at 94.4%.
The balance sheet also moved in the right direction. Archrock's leverage ratio fell to 2.6x as of June 30, down from 3.3x a year earlier, even after the company redeemed its entire $800 million of 6.250% senior notes due 2028 on April 1. The board kept rewarding shareholders through it all, declaring a quarterly dividend of $0.23 per share, about 10% higher than a year ago, marking the fifth increase in two years, with coverage still comfortable at 3.1x.
The softer parts of this quarter center on aftermarket services and forward guidance. That segment's revenue fell to $42.0 million from $64.8 million, as last year's non-recurring sales of overhauled engines did not repeat and maintenance demand skipped its usual mid-year seasonal **** p. Total operating horsepower also declined to 4.5 million from 4.7 million, partly from the sale of about 165,000 non-strategic units.
On the guidance front, Archrock tightened its full-year adjusted EBITDA range to $865 million to $885 million, down from a prior range of $865 million to $915 million, pointing to lube oil cost pressure, higher make-ready spending to reactivate idle equipment, and increased SG&A tied to stock-based incentive compensation. Adjusted net income actually dipped to $66.5 million and adjusted EPS to $0.38, both slightly below last year's $68.4 million and $0.39. Long-term debt still sits at $2.3 billion, and Archrock did not repurchase any shares during the quarter, leaving $113.2 million of buyback capacity untouched.

PSG v Monaco — 3:05p on beIN Sports: After a wild transfer saga back and forth Folarin Balogun remains at Monaco, at least until January. However, he was not included in Friday's matchday squad and apparently was left off the team's Conference League roster as well so it looks as though he has work to do to gain back a position at the club.
NYCFC v Nashville SC — 7:30p on Apple TV: Matt Freese and NYCFC look to snap a five match winless streak on Friday night but they'll have to do it against league leading Nashville who have won four straight and have a nine point lead in the Supporters Shield standings.
Newcastle v Bournemouth — 7:30a on USA Network/Peacock: For the second straight week Tyler Adams came off the bench and Bournemouth conceded a late goal to drop points as Everton scored in stoppage time to draw level. Bournemouth will travel to Newcastle this weekend in search of their first win of the season as they face a Newcastle side coming off a 2-0 win over Tottenham.

AS Monaco have announced the squad for their upcoming UEFA Europa Conference League campaign. Folarin Balogun has been notably omitted from the squad. It comes following the breakdown of his move to Everton on transfer deadline day.
Monaco announced their UECL squad on Thursday. Balogun was not in it. Whilst Nice-Matin have reported that the USMNT international is likely to remain at Monaco, at least until the winter, there is still the possibility for him to depart. The transfer windows in Turkiye and Saudi Arabia, notably, remain open.
Balogun returned to training for Monaco on Thursday, ahead of Friday night's game against Paris Saint-Germain. He has not been included in the matchday squad for that game, however. A fitness issue had been evoked by Filipe Luís pre-match. The Brazilian manager could not give a timeline for the striker's return. This, as well as the uncertainty over his future, could explain Balogun's surprise absence from the Europa Conference League list.
Matthis Abline, Paris Brunner, and Mika Biereth are the recognised senior options at Luís' disposal.

U.S. striker Folarin Balogun has been left out of Monaco's squad for the Conference League amid uncertainty over his future after the collapse of his proposed transfer to Everton this week.
Balogun also will miss Monaco's match at Paris Saint-Germain in the French league on Friday after being omitted from the group traveling up to the capital.
Monaco said Balogun was back in group training. He hasn't featured in any of the team's four games so far this season.
The American striker was close to joining Everton for a reported 40 million pounds ($54 million) on Tuesday — the last day of the summer transfer window for most leagues in Europe — but opted to pull out of a deal because he felt uncomfortable that the English club raised doubts about his health in a medical examination, Monaco sporting director Thiago Scuro said.
Monaco is under pressure to sell Balogun, or another of its top players, because the club needs to generate money to comply with the French league's financial rules.

Everton have been presented with a surprise market opportunity after being offered the chance to sign Anthony Martial, according to talkSPORT. The former Manchester United forward is available as a free agent and would consider a return to the Premier League, a development that arrives at a time when David Moyes is urgently seeking attacking reinforcements.
The timing is obvious. Everton are short in the striking department after a move for Folarin Balogun collapsed late on Deadline Day. As the report states, the club are "desperate for a striker" and that need has only sharpened after the sale of Beto, leaving "just Thierno Barry up front". In that context, it is understandable why Martial's name has surfaced, even if the profile comes with major questions.

Martial, now 30, has been without a club since his spell in Mexico with Monterrey ended after only 20 games earlier this year. He remains a recognisable name in Premier League circles, having scored 63 goals and produced 33 ****** ists across 209 matches for Manchester United. Yet the broader picture is harder to ignore. His post-Old Trafford career has offered little evidence of a sustained revival.
At AEK Athens, he managed nine goals and two ****** ists in 24 appearances. His time at Monterrey was more troubling, where he "scored just once in 20 games", and the source notes he has netted only 10 goals since leaving English football in 2024. Injuries have also continued to interrupt him, with a "nasty dislocated shoulder" cutting short his time in Mexico.

Sep. 3—It's pretty clear what the focus is this week for the Creston football team in preparing for a third straight road game at Winterset.
"When we met as a staff on Sunday we really looked at getting out of the gates better," Panther coach Brian Morrison said. "We've had two games in a row now that we started slow on both sides of the ball and got ourselves in a hole. We've looked at everything, including when we leave and our pregame routine."
In week zero, the Panthers rallied from a 22-0 deficit to defeat Centerville 52-42. Last week at Clarinda, Creston trailed 17-0 in the opening minutes. The Panthers battled back to forge a 45-45 tie in the third quarter. The Cardinals won 59-45 on the strength of a 14-0 fourth quarter, relying heavily on a ball control offense led by Baylor Hash's 206 yards on 31 carries.
"We can't keep doing this," Morrison said. "We were down 14-0 and the defense had only been on the field for three plays. In reality, we gave up 28 points on two big passing plays where our defensive backs lost their footing, a big kick return gave them a short field, and they got a pick six. Later on we kind of settled in on defense and our offense played great in the second and third quarters to get us back in it. But Clarinda is a really good team and we can't get ourselves in trouble early like that."
After the Panthers tied it 45-45, the Cardinals put together two drives and came up with a key stop defensively.

Chelsea are approaching the final weeks of the transfer window with an unresolved question at their centre. Enzo Fernandez has been linked with a move to Manchester City throughout August, and the commercial logic of selling is not difficult to construct. What is considerably more difficult is justifying strengthening a direct rival at a moment when that rival's most glaring weakness is precisely the position Fernandez occupies.
Fernandez cost Chelsea €120 million in January 2023. He was bought to be the deep-lying conductor of a new-look midfield – the replacement for Jorginho, the organiser around whom creativity would flow. That vision has never been fully realised at Stamford Bridge, and the reasons why are well-documented.
Every manager Chelsea (7.04) has appointed since his arrival has struggled to make a Fernandez-Caicedo double pivot function out of possession. Fernandez is not physically built to cover large central ***** es. His defensive awareness is sharp enough for international soccer, where Lionel Scaloni's Argentina have found ways to manage around his limitations, but has never been sharp enough at club level to survive without significant structural support.
Enzo Maresca's solution last season was to move Fernandez into the left pocket, push a fullback deeper into the midfield beside Caicedo and slow Chelsea's possession game to keep the team compact. It improved the collective structure and allowed Fernandez to play his best soccer at Chelsea, scoring 15 goals across all competitions. But it came at a notable cost, most visibly, the significant dip in Cole Palmer's form.
Xabi Alonso is not going to replicate that approach. His 3-4-2-1 system places Morgan Rogers and Palmer as dual attacking midfielders behind the striker. That is precisely where Fernandez would be best utilised. But Chelsea paid £117 million for Rogers this transfer window to fill that exact role. The positional arithmetic does not work in Fernandez's favour.

After this year's draft, much of the conversation turned to what else the Colts needed. Unfortunately, it wasn't asking the question, "What player or positional improvement puts us in the Super Bowl conversation" but more along the lines of "If we don't get better at this position, how bad are we are going to suck?". Pierce being hurt saw the biggest area of concern shift from an Edge rusher, to a proven, dependable WR. Swing Tackle was a concern, as was a RB2. I was personally concerned with the inexperience at LB.
Training camp came and eased some of the RB concerns. McGowan was able to impress in practices and looked good in preseason games as well, while showing he could contribute on STs when called upon. Some didn't like the choice for #3 RB, but Giddens has also been in the building for two years and must have gained more confidence that Bentley. We saw some good play out of what will be depth or situational Edge play from our later rookies, even if we never got a glimpse of our starters on the outside. We may still be a pass rusher away from being the best that we can be.
One unforeseen weakness did appear during camp. We discovered that the loss of Pinter left us without a Center who could handle snapping the football. Many tried, but all looked bad in their efforts. It was glaring enough that we had to make a low level deal to bring in an experienced backup. Given that OL players seldom get through a season unscathed, I feel better about our backup Center, without the benefit of ever seeing him play a snap.
As camp ended, we did as hoped by bringing in an experience WR. Some of the shine came off of our new toy, when overserved, crossed paths with a bad choice, to result in an arrest. We may or may not lose Allen for a few games this year, but if it happens, it will likely be manipulated to minimize the loss. This leaves Swing Tackle as the last perceived deficiency to address. Tenuta was not as popular among the coaches as he was with fans, as he didn't make the 53 man roster and had to clear waivers to remain on the practice squad. It looks like we are more willing to move our Guards to Tackle, than to have a true Swing Tackle. We may have to call that position a weakness.

The left-hander gave up seven runs and eight hits in three innings of a 13-8 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. He is 7-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 14 games, including 12 starts.
"I felt good warming up, felt good in the bullpen and then got out there and kind of just lost it," Lauer said after the loss, not mentioning a possible injury. "I think I might have been tinkering a little too much in between. I don't think that there's something glaringly wrong."
The Dodgers acquired Lauer on May 17 from Toronto in exchange for cash. He was 1-5 with a 6.69 ERA in eight games for the Blue Jays. Last season, Lauer was 9-2 with a 3.18 ERA.
To make room on the 40-man roster, relief pitcher Will Klein was added to the 60-day IL.

Folarin Balogun's £40 million ($54 million) move to Everton from Monaco collapsed hours before the transfer window closed because the United States striker pulled out over his "treatment" by the Premier League side, the Ligue 1 club's managing director said on Wednesday.
Balogun -- who was at the centre of controversy at the World Cup after US President Donald Trump successfully intervened to force FIFA to suspend a red card so he could play against Belgium in the last 16 -- had undergone a medical in England before Everton started to raise some concerns about his fitness.
Although the Premier League side decided to proceed with the deal -- after a couple of hours of discussions between the two clubs' medical departments -- Balogun pulled the plug himself.
"Five minutes before the close of the (English) transfer window... I signed the contract, and Everton signed the contract," Monaco managing director Thiago Scuro told reporters.
"At the last moment, the player decided not to sign.

According to The Athletic, the United States international decided against completing the move after late complications, despite Everton having already pushed deep into the process with Monaco.
This was far from a routine transfer that simply ran out of time. Everton had worked to renegotiate terms with Monaco after concerns emerged during Balogun's medical. They then filed a dealsheet with the Premier League in an attempt to secure the extra window needed to finish the paperwork beyond the 11pm BST deadline. Even then, the expectation around Finch Farm was that a route remained open. Instead, Balogun chose not to continue and left without signing.
For Everton, that detail matters. This was not a case of Monaco pulling away or the numbers becoming impossible. The club had stayed at the table, tried to reshape the structure and remained hopeful that an agreement could still be salvaged. In the end, the player made the call.
The timing makes the setback even more severe. Everton had already allowed Beto to leave for Fiorentina, a significant decision in itself given the need for reliable depth in attacking areas. Iliman Ndiaye has also moved on to Manchester City, further reducing the options in the final third. Tyrique George has arrived permanently from Chelsea, while Jack Grealish has returned on loan from Manchester City, but neither development truly addresses the obvious need for a central striker ready to carry the line.
