Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert says his players "deserve all the credit" after they beat Bristol City 4-1 on Saturday.
Two goals from Cyle Larin, and strikes from Kuryu Matsuki and Finn Azaz capped off an excellent performance, and extended their unbeaten run in the league to six matches.
"If you see the block of games that we come from it's not easy, especially if you then face a team who had a whole week to prepare," he told BBC Radio Solent.
"The midweek game against Swansea we knew that we have to run more and we did run more and more intense than we have all season.
"Obviously that takes takes a toll, that's just the reality so early on in the season and then it was just different energy levels on the pitch today."

Southampton's first Championship game since the Spygate scandal ended in a 2-1 loss at Watford on Sunday.
Canadian striker Cyle Larin pulled a goal back for the Saints in the second period but they could not find an equaliser.
We asked for Southampton fans to send us their views on the performance and result and here is what some of them had to say:
Steve - Ineffective sideways and backwards keep-possession play instead of positive attacking play. When are Saints going to learn?
George - Started well but then could not hold them off. Both goals should have been stopped. Jack Stephens has to look at himself for both goals. Much better second half but we still need a top striker. I wish Tonda Eckert would give Edozie a better run as he is very skilful.

The night of the 2026 World Cup delivers two major verdicts. Canada claim the first World Cup win in their history by crushing Qatar, while Mexico become the first team to qualify for the round of 32 thanks to their victory over South Korea. Jonathan David and Luis Romo were the standout stars, but the images destined to stick in the memory are also those of Ismaël Koné’s terrible injury and South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu’s shocking blunder.

A perfect evening, but only in part, for Jesse Marsch’s Canada. After their 1-1 draw in the opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Canadians thrashed Qatar 6-0 in front of the Vancouver crowd and earned the first World Cup win in their history. A result that sends them to the top of Group B and leaves them needing only a draw against Switzerland in the final matchday to qualify.
Leading the hosts was a rampant Jonathan David. The Juventus striker grabbed a hat-trick, reached 42 goals in 79 appearances for the national team, and moved level at the top of the tournament’s scoring charts. First he took part in the move for Cyle Larin’s 1-0, then he made it 2-0 with a right-footed volley, and in the second half he completed his show with two more goals. It was a historic night for him: he is only the second Juventus player to score a World Cup hat-trick after Paolo Rossi.

Canada thrashed nine-man Qatar 6-0 to secure their first ever World Cup victory on Thursday as Switzerland reignited their campaign with a resounding defeat of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Tournament co-hosts Canada had lost all six of their previous matches at the World Cup, at the 1986 and 2022 finals, but brought that run of losses to a halt in spectacular fashion at Vancouver's BC Place Stadium.
With Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney -- wearing a replica Canada shirt -- among a fired-up crowd, Jesse Marsch's side ran riot to secure a win that leaves them needing only a point against Switzerland to finish top of Group B.
A hat-trick from Juventus striker Jonathan David, one goal apiece from Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba, and a Mohammad Manai own goal sealed Canada's win.
The victory was marred though by a serious left leg injury to midfielder Ismael Kone, who was stretchered off after being clumsily upended by Qatar's ***** im Madibo in the 51st minute.

Jonathan David scored three goals and Canada won its first World Cup match while all but securing a spot in the knockout round with a 6-0 victory over Qatar on Thursday.
Qatar was reduced to nine players because of red cards in the chaotic match. ***** im Madibo was handed a red early in the second half after a tackle on Ismaël Koné, who was stretched off with a serious injury to his lower left leg. Homan Ahmed was sent off in the first half for a challenge on Tajon Buchanan.

Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney attended the match after missing the team’s opener in Toronto last week because of the G7 summit in France. He sat with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Cyle Larin scored his second goal of the tournament on a rebound in the 16th minute. Qatar goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada punched away David’s volley but it fell to Larin, who pointed to his ears in celebration as the red-clad crowd roared.

Canada has finally gotten a win at the 2026 World Cup — though it came at a price.
In the second game of group stage play, Les Rouges crushed Qatar 6-0 to pick up its first victory in its history at the tournament. Qatar picked up two straight red cards throughout the game, ending with nine players and looking completely incapable of stopping the Canadian attack.
It took little time for Canada to get on the board, with Cyle Larin finding the back of the next in the 16th minute off a rebound shot. Jonathan David then picked up a first-half brace, first scoring off a volley in the 29th minute before getting a rebound in first-half stoppage time.
Qatar’s foul woes truly started in the 33rd minute, when Homam Ahmed was given a straight red card after denying Tajon Buchanan a goal just outside the box. (Ahmed was originally given a yellow and Canada awarded a penalty, but the placement of the foul also changed the card under official rules.)
The game then took a turn less than 10 minutes into the second half, as Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné was stretchered off with a potential leg injury after a collision with **** im Madibo. Several players were emotional as Koné was taken off, including Madibo, who was later **** sed a red card for the tackle.

Canada and Qatar meet in Vancouver tonight, looking to pick up three points which could be crucial in their bids to reach the World Cup knockout stages.
Jesse Marsch may have been disappointed his Canada side failed to take all three points from their opening game against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto. They put forward a spirited display and created multiple quality chances that on another day would’ve been converted. A sloppy goal from a set-piece meant that Cyle Larin’s goal was just the equaliser.
Still they did make history in attaining their first ever point at the World Cup finals and will be hoping to all but guarantee a place in the knockout rounds for the first time in their history with a win over Qatar.
While he missed a big chance in the first half of that game, Juventus striker Jonathan David was bright and showed a lot of positive sings in his cameo. There is also the fact that full-back and the side’s best player Alphonso Davies didn’t feature at all due to still recovering from a hamstring injury sustained earlier on this season.
Their opponents made history of their own in a shock result against Switzerland in a blistering San Francisco heat, after falling behind to a very controversial Breel Embolo penalty in the early stages of the game. The Qatari’s rallied and defended valiantly as Switzerland could not come up with an answer.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Canada captain Alphonso Davies remained limited in the team's World Cup training session on Monday as he recovers from a hamstring injury.
Davies warmed up with the team at Canada's training base but remained in return to play protocol ahead of the co-host's second group match on Thursday against Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver.
The left back injured a hamstring last month while playing for Bayern Munich in 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain that knocked the German club out of the Champions League semifinals.
Davies has not played for Canada since March 2025, when he tore an ACL in the CONCACAF Nations League finals. He has 15 goals in 58 games for Canada.
Canada opened the World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday in Toronto. Late substitute Cyle Larin scored an equalizer for the Canadians in the 78th minute.

World Cup co-hosts Canada were held to a 1-1 draw by the Republic of Ireland in Montreal after Chiedozie Ogbene equalized from a rebound.
Ogbene reacted quickest to slot home after Troy Parrott's penalty was saved, cancelling out Canada's first-half opener.
Canada went ahead midway through the first half when a corner was flicked on by Parrott and found the Irish net via the unfortunate Jake O'Brien.
O'Brien made amends with a good block to deny Hull's Liam Millar as the hosts threatened to stretch their lead before the interval.
Ireland were given a route back into the match just before the hour when Jamie McGrath was caught by a high foot in the box by Cyle Larin.
