Its design replicates a 19th-century tiara owned by her grandmother, the ******* ss of Cambridge, and inherited by her "beloved Aunt" Augusta, Grand ******* ss of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
The piece is topped with heart-shaped bow motifs and was originally set with 38 pearls (19 dangling, 19 upright). Queen Mary later had the upper pearls removed and replaced with enormous diamonds.
