Of the innumerable jewels in the royal vault there are only some that remain in popular rotation today, glittering pieces filled with history and meaning that have been re-worn for generations.
These beloved heirlooms offer us a rare insight into the personal styles of their famously private wearers; some are chosen for their timeless designs, others gently adapted over decades to suit the prevailing tastes.
From sparkling tiaras to romantic bracelets, these are the stories behind 11 of the Royal family's favourite pieces.
One of the most recognisable royal jewels, the Lover's Knot tiara, was commissioned by Queen Mary in 1913 from E Wolff & Co, who supplied Garrard. Its design replicates a 19th-century tiara owned by her grandmother, the ******* ss of Cambridge, and inherited by her "beloved Aunt" Augusta, Grand ******* ss of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
The piece is topped with heart-shaped bow motifs and was originally set with 38 pearls (19 dangling, 19 upright). Queen Mary later had the upper pearls removed and replaced with enormous diamonds.
