In the end, Kevin Warsh's Federal Reserve acquitted itself well. For all the uncertainty he had sparked at the previous meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, when he refused to provide any indication of what he was prepared to do to tame stubborn inflation, the chair on Wednesday presided over a unanimous decision to raise interest rates for the first time in three years.
"Today's action starts to show that we're serious about this," he said at the press conference after the meeting, with "this" meaning inflation in excess of the Fed's 2% target for over five years. Welcome though it was, his embrace of economic orthodoxy nonetheless did little to dispel the Keystone Cops quality of governance in Donald Trump's US.
Warsh's resolve – raising rates just a few weeks before elections that will determine whether Republicans retain control of Congress – appeared even more resolute in the face of a veiled threat from White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett, who pointed out to his chums on Fox that "if you want an independent Fed, then one thing the Fed does is it stays out of the way of elections".

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Orange missed several redzone opportunities, turned the ball over at costly times and committed numerous penalties to undo all of their hard work against the Golden Bears. A game in which the offensive numbers looked far better for Syracuse ended in a Cal 21-18 win when Golden Bears safety Kingston Lopa housed a pick six for the eventual winning score with 4:51 left in the 4th quarter.
Syracuse started the game with the ball, and fireworks showed immediately. Tylik Hill ripped a 55 yard rush on the second play of the game to immediately put the Orange in a goal-to-go situation. Syracuse couldn't convert and settled for a Tripp Woody field goal to open the scoring at 3-0.
Cal set its intentions early by playing in empty sets for much of its first drive. Although the Golden Bears got a first down, impressive pressure from Keyshawn Johnson and Dillan Fontus on 3rd down stalled the first Cal drive before midfield.
Syracuse's second drive saw the return of Justus Ross-Simmons, newly eligible after a long and nervous legal battle. He snagged the first Orange reception of the day, going 22 yards up the right sideline. Shavane Anderson Jr. also started to show that his first week performance wasn't a fluke with a pair of good eight-yard gains to move the chains. The Orange had to punt, however, to end their second drive of the day.

This one started bowling shoe ugly and ended up Sam the Chinese Crested Dog ugly, with Bradley Hanner proving why he is the definition of the 26th man on a Major League roster. Gerrit Cole gave up more home runs, three of em while not making it out of the fifth inning, but Hanner wasn't any better, allowing two dingers while five men crossed the plate against him. All this is to say the Yankees were kicked around Saturday afternoon, losing 12-2 to the Mets

Fastballs in the zone lead to some kinds of nasty contact, but the thing that's really been different about him since returning from Tommy John is how many pitches he's keeping in the zone. He's got the lowest walk rate of his career, and indeed he didn't walk a single batter today. He also has the highest Zone%, or, throws more pitches in the strike zone than any other season of his career.
In his last two starts he's allowed seven home runs. Only three today, though they still counted for four runs like last weekend against the Padres.
Part of this is just random variance, enough monkeys at enough typewriters for long enough. Any time you talk about two games' worth of data, you have to throw up your hands at the universe. He's also been stung by Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Jake Cronenworth, Francisco Lindor…guys that have been around the block. Lindor especially looked keyed up to swing in the game's first AB, the first dinger Cole allowed today. Former Baby Bomber Luis Torrens and rookie Carson Benge also homered off Cole to build a 4-0 lead.

The I-35 Rivalry returns to San Marcos, as Texas State football hosts UTSA on Saturday in a clash between two of Texas' biggest midmajor programs.
The Bobcats' rise has coincided with increased success against the Roadrunners. Head coach GJ Kinne has led Texas State to two straight wins over UTSA and his former mentor, Jeff Traylor, after a 20-13 loss in Kinne's debut year. The Bobcats handed the Roadrunners a 49-10 drubbing last time they met in San Marcos, and Traylor made it clear in the days leading up to the game that he hasn't forgotten that embarrassment.

The Oklahoma Sooners take on the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday in a big-time road matchup in Ann Arbor, Mich. Both teams are looking to remain undefeated two weeks into the season.
The Sooners won the game in Norman a year ago behind a big game from John Mateer. In a 24-13 win in primetime, Mateer threw for 270 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also carried the ball 19 times for 74 yards and two touchdowns. The Sooners were up 14-0 at halftime before a 75-yard touchdown run from Justice Haynes on the first play from scrimmage of the second half cut the lead to 14-7.
Mateer and the Sooners made it 21-7 with 10 minutes to go in the third, and the defense stifled Bryce Underwood and the Wolverines to earn the 24-13 win. Oklahoma held Underwood to 9 of 24 for 142 yards passing and three carries for minus-1 yard rushing. Outside of the 75-yard run, Oklahoma held the Wolverines to just 2.29 yards per carry.
Oklahoma is expected to have a better offense than the one that beat the Wolverines in 2025. If the Sooners can get a similar defensive effort against a team that struggled to move the ball on the MAC's Western Michigan, it should be a good day for the boys in the crimson and cream.

The Miami Hurricanes move to 2-0 after drubbing the FAMU Rattlers 77-7 on Thursday night at Hard Rock Stadium. I predicted Miami by 40+ and clearly that was an easy take.
Diatribe coming, skip ahead: I greatly appreciate what the FCS games do for the FCS athletic departments, essentially the payoff keeps the schools afloat for the year, however these games need to be recalibrated. I was bored halfway through the first quarter and went to sleep at halftime.
My suggestion is to move these games to Week Zero, treat it like a preseason game ie. it doesn't count, and still pay the teams the fee to come and play. That would give FSU a chance to check their light system, and everyone else a chance to simulate the game day experience with a lower ticket price while still being televised. The fact that your season ticket package includes this boring game, in addition to Central Michigan, would feel like robbery to me. OK- DIATRIBE OVER.
The Canyonero Keys to Victory main theme was to drive over a team ranked in the 200's in SP+ and throw it in reverse and back over them again. Miami did just that and we're all ready to move on to real opponents now. The three keys were:

We are just a few days away from the start of the Minnesota Vikings season, as they open at home against the Green Bay Packers. Minnesota looks to brush off a very up-and-down 2025 season as they look to get back into the playoffs. It starts in week one, and here are three keys for the offense in Week 1.
The Vikings finished last season 23rd in rushing yards, but 12th in yards per carry. They bring back both Aaron Jones Sr. and Jordan Mason from a year ago, who did well in limited carries. If Minnesota wants to win this Sunday, they will need to establish the run, but not abandon it so quickly as they did last season.
2025 was a disappointing year for Justin Jefferson, finishing with career lows in receptions (84), yards (1,048), and touchdowns (2). This was largely due to horrific quarterback play, which has improved with the addition of Kyler Murray. Zheng Qinwen pulled off another US Open stunner Monday, beating Iga Swiatek to book a quarter final with Elena Rybakina as men's top seed Alexander Zverev advanced safely to the last eight.
It was one more gritty comeback for Zheng, the Paris Olympics gold medallist and a former world number four now ranked 121st after struggling in the wake of elbow surgery last year.

On August 18, Himax Technologies (NASDAQ:HIMX) said its WiseEye palm vein biometric technology now powers the WAFERLOCK L322, a smart lock built by Taiwan-based WAFERLOCK Corporation that just went on sale. Instead of scanning a fingerprint or a face, the lock reads the vein pattern under a user's palm, a method Himax says still works when hands are wet, dirty, or full of groceries. The announcement lands less than two weeks after Himax posted a second quarter that beat its own guidance on revenue, margin, and profit, giving the palm vein rollout a stronger financial backdrop than it might otherwise have had.
The WAFERLOCK deal shows what Himax has been building toward with WiseEye, an ultralow-power AI platform that pairs an image sensor and processor to capture, match, and verify a palm vein image directly on the device, without sending anything to the cloud. That matters for a smart lock, where sending biometric data offsite would be a hard sell to homeowners. The L322 pairs palm vein recognition with RFID cards, PIN codes, mechanical keys, and compatibility with EasyCard, iPASS, and MIFARE, so the biometric layer sits on top of access methods people already use.
Himax said the underlying palm vein modules earned TÜV Rheinland verification during the quarter, validating their recognition accuracy, response speed, and liveness detection, and that the technology also complies with GDPR, one of the world's strictest privacy standards. Design-in activity is already spreading beyond locks into workforce management, computer monitors, and smart office equipment.
Automotive remains the larger story sitting underneath it. Automotive display drivers, timing controllers, and touch controllers made up well over half of Himax's revenue in the quarter ended June 30, and the company expects full-year 2026 automotive IC sales to grow by double digits from a year earlier as automakers pack more, larger, and higher-resolution screens into vehicle interiors.

The WAFERLOCK deal shows what Himax has been building toward with WiseEye, an ultralow-power AI platform that pairs an image sensor and processor to capture, match, and verify a palm vein image directly on the device, without sending anything to the cloud. That matters for a smart lock, where sending biometric data offsite would be a hard sell to homeowners. The L322 pairs palm vein recognition with RFID cards, PIN codes, mechanical keys, and compatibility with EasyCard, iPASS, and MIFARE, so the biometric layer sits on top of access methods people already use.
Himax said the underlying palm vein modules earned TÜV Rheinland verification during the quarter, validating their recognition accuracy, response speed, and liveness detection, and that the technology also complies with GDPR, one of the world's strictest privacy standards. Design-in activity is already spreading beyond locks into workforce management, computer monitors, and smart office equipment.
Automotive remains the larger story sitting underneath it. Automotive display drivers, timing controllers, and touch controllers made up well over half of Himax's revenue in the quarter ended June 30, and the company expects full-year 2026 automotive IC sales to grow by double digits from a year earlier as automakers pack more, larger, and higher-resolution screens into vehicle interiors.

Several of architect David McLay Kidd's most popular courses have focused on extreme and creative playability, with Gamble Sands in Washington and Mammoth Dunes at Sand Valley in Wisconsin as prime examples. Even his first-ever design, the original Bandon Dunes layout at the famed resort of the same name in Oregon, put playability at the forefront.
Kidd had a few deviations from the playability theme in his career, but in recent years he has talked at length about designing courses that are approachable for any level of golfer. The trick, he has said, is to challenge the best players while allowing less-skilled golfers to keep swinging.
Consider that challenge accepted at Bone Valley in Florida, his latest completed creation that will open in late September for preview play at the well-regarded Streamsong Resort. Built with an appreciation of the resort's other courses and with those layouts' DNA in mind, Kidd has constructed a new, full-sized 18 that offers ample width and plenty of opportunities to bounce **** into greens – those are keys to playability for less-skilled players.
But just as megalodon shark teeth can be found in the sand piles left over from the site's history as a phosphate mining operation, Bone Valley can offer a bit of a bite. Stray too far from the best scoring lines, and even the best players will struggle with the angles as they attempt to set up birdie putts.
"My team and I felt like we got to build something really, really fun both visually, strategically, creatively," Kidd said. "I think golfers, when they come here, won't be disappointed. I think they'll have a blast trying to figure out how to navigate their way through. I think every hole has a dozen different attacks you could make, a thousand different ways you could recover from error. It's not overly penal, but she is going to put up a fight against scoring. I think I've been able to refine that over the last dozen years or so."

It will be a spirited crowd on Monday night when the No. 19 SMU Mustangs come to Doak Campbell Stadium to take on the Florida State Seminoles. It's the ACC opener for both schools, and it will set the tone for conference play for each program in 2026.
FSU was able to pick up a win in their season opener thanks in large part to only allowing 17 points. With that said, they need to improve in multiple areas against SMU if they want to come out with a victory.
