Sept 13 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Barack Obama has warned that artificial intelligence could be "dangerous" if not properly managed, and urged Democrats to frame policy and governance agendas to tackle the issue, the New York Times said on Sunday.
The remarks at a recent private fundraising event come as growing numbers of U.S. lawmakers call for tougher rules on AI systems after dire warnings from two Anthropic researchers that rapid industry progress risks extinction of the human race.
"This is something that is moving very fast in private hands, and if we don't get on top of it, I think can be dangerous," the newspaper quoted Obama as saying on Thursday.
Citing a partial transcript of remarks from Obama's office, the paper said he encouraged House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to help shape a public conversation on AI policy if Democrats regained the House in midterm elections on November 3.
"Once you are speaker, I would strongly urge that the Democrats put together a framework for a very public conversation," Obama told Jeffries, the paper added.

The roster shuffling has already begun for the Denver Broncos ahead of Sunday's 53-man roster deadline.
One day after the Broncos signed pass rusher Ron Stone Jr. and cut wide receiver Hakeem Butler, the team made four more roster moves on Wednesday.
Denver signed defensive lineman Israel Antwine and offensive tackle Foster Sarell, presumably to add more depth to the bottom of the roster to have enough players for Friday's preseason finale. To make room for Antwine and Sarell, the Broncos cut safety Taylor Rapp and wide receiver Kyre Duplessis.
The Rapp release was a surprise because he just signed last week, and head coach Sean Payton and defensive coordinator Vance Joseph (just yesterday) were both full of praise for the veteran safety. Payton explained after Wednesday's practice that Rapp is dealing with a personal situation. After that is resolved, Rapp will be a candidate to return to the team.

If Charles Barkley is going to accuse LeBron James of ring chasing, then Shannon Sharpe is going to hit Barkley with the same criticism.
Barkley joined Unfiltered with Ricky Bo and Bill Colarulo on Philadelphia's 97.5 The Fanatic this week to discuss the NBA offseason. And while projecting where James should play next season, Barkley criticized the four-time NBA champion for ring chasing to catch the "imaginary Michael Jordan ghost," saying he should just go back to Cleveland.
Ring chasing has been the most common criticism of James since he spurned Cleveland the first time to team up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami 16 years ago. But Shannon Sharpe believes Barkley is being hypocritical when he calls James out for ring chasing.
"Let me ask you a question. If he goes to the Cavaliers, what are they going to say? He ring chasing," Sharpe said Thursday on Nightcap. "But here's the thing: they could say that about Charles. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday he hopes Democrats remember that after the primary elections are over, the party's "enemy is Donald Trump."
MS NOW's Jen Psaki spoke with Jeffries about Israel playing a role in the New York Democratic primary. She asked Jeffries about his reflection on the issue and how Democratic voters may have made their decision to unseat pro-Israel incumbents based on the party's support for Israel amid its nearly three-year war in Gaza.
"I think for us as House Democrats, we're just hopeful that everybody recognizes once we get through this primary season, that the enemy is Donald Trump and MAGA extremism in terms of trying to bring about the type of America that we all desire, where when you work hard and play by the rules, working class folks can live a comfortable life, an affordable life and a good life," Jeffries said after a lengthy answer.
New York races on Tuesday saw Democratic candidates who have been vocal critics of Israel's government and who have led or taken part in pro-Palestinian protests defeat incumbents who have shown support to Israel in the years after the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.
Several of the New York Democratic House challengers who won included former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander (D), Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier.

Every year, it seems like second-round picks are traded in mega-deals to add a little bit of extra value to a trade, but every once in a while, second-round players can make an impact at the NBA level sooner rather than later.
This draft class has several talents that the Rockets should be considering for their No. 39 pick to bolster their bench, but one pick, if available, feels like a match that is too perfect to pass on.

Teams thought so highly of the 2026 NBA Draft class that we saw historic levels of tanking last season — in the final months of the campaign, nine teams were actively not looking to win games, hoping to improve their lottery odds (even slightly). The Denver Broncos clearly liked what they saw from the St. Louis Battlehawks this spring.
In addition to agreeing to sign Battlehawks wide receiver Hakeem Butler, the Broncos are also signing St. Louis cornerback/returner Sean Fresch, according to a report from James Larsen of UFL Newsroom. Fresch (5-8, 173 pounds) worked out for the team last week, but he was not eligible to sign until after the UFL championship game on Saturday.
The 24-year-old cornerback played college football at Rice before totaling 29 tackles, four pass breakups and two sacks with the Battlehawks this spring (10 games). Fresch also returned 32 punts for 333 yards and three kickoffs for 85 yards during the 2026 UFL season.

Butler also won the offensive player of the year award while playing for St. Louis in 2024 and he's spent the last three seasons with the team. He had 29 catches for 641 yards and three touchdowns during the 2026 season.
Butler was a 2019 fourth-round pick of the Cardinals and spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve. He played in two games for the Eagles in 2020 and has also spent time with the Panthers, Steelers and Bengals over the course of his career.

The 2025-26 LSU athletics season closes at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, and the Tigers are looking to finish the season strong. From June 10-13, the men’s and women’s track teams will look to rack up enough points to claim a national championship for LSU. The men will compete on Wednesday and Friday, and the women will compete on Thursday and Saturday. The LSU men are looking for their sixth outdoor ****** le and first since 2021, while the women are looking for a record-extending 15th non-vacated ****** le and first since 2008. These will be broadcast across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN+.
For those unfamiliar, the track and field championship is determined by a combined points system. Teams do not qualify as combined units. Instead, individual competitors and relay squads from each team qualify out of regionals. Each person or squad is fighting to win a national championship for themselves and points for their team. The national champions score 10 points, the runners-up score 8, and third-eighth score 6-1 points in descending order. It’s possible to score multiple points on one event, and that’s the best chance for LSU to rack up points.
To clear up broadcast info, all field events will be broadcast on ESPN+. On Wednesday, all of LSU’s track events except the 4x400m semifinals will be broadcast on ESPN. The rest of the championship will be broadcast on ESPN2 for both the men and the women. To save ****** e, here is a link to the full schedule of all four days.
