Sept 13 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Barack Obama has warned that artificial intelligence could be "dangerous" if not properly managed, and urged ‌Democrats to frame policy and governance agendas to tackle the ‌issue, the New York Times said on Sunday.
The remarks at a recent private fundraising event come as growing numbers of U.S. lawmakers call for tougher rules on AI systems after dire warnings from two Anthropic researchers that rapid industry progress risks extinction of the human race.
"This is something that is moving very fast ‌in private hands, and if we don't get on top of it, I think can be dangerous," the newspaper quoted Obama as saying on Thursday.
Citing a partial transcript of remarks from Obama's office, the paper said he encouraged House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to help shape a public conversation on AI policy if Democrats regained the House in midterm elections on November 3.
"Once ‌you are speaker, I would strongly urge that the Democrats put together a framework for a very public conversation," Obama told Jeffries, the paper added.

Anti-Israel journalist Rula Jebreal apologized "unconditionally" after calling House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., an "AIPAC monkey" during an interview earlier this week, a remark the Congressional Black Caucus and several Democratic lawmakers condemned as blatantly racist.
The comment came as Jebreal appeared on Wajahat Ali's "The Left Hook" podcast Wednesday and accused Jeffries, who is Black, of carrying out the agenda of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and blasted his support for Israel.
"His name is Hakeem. 'Hakeem' is an Arabic name which means 'healer.' He's not a healer, he's a divider," Jebreal said.

The House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning socialism on Tuesday evening, with all but eight House Democrats voting against it.
In a stunning twist of fate, however, the vote would not have occurred if two House Democrats hadn't stepped in hours earlier to help the GOP through a procedural hurdle — blindsiding House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., in the process.
Jeffries later threatened consequences for the pair in a dramatic statement late on Tuesday night, calling their move a "breach of trust."
The resolution passed 220 to 192 with all "no" votes coming from the left, including Democrats' senior leaders: House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., and House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, D-Calif.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Monday said "no one from the Trump Cartel is getting a pass" in a post on the social media platform X. The video comes after he faced backlash for meeting with Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law.
The New York Times reported Sunday that the two met privately ahead of November's midterms to discuss common ground on issues like housing, immigration and the high cost of living.
Jeffries said Kushner reached out to him first, and he accepted so the pair could discuss affordability. His post emphasized, however, that House Democrats have pushed the Trump administration on issues including tariffs, the Affordable Care Act, nutritional ****** istance and more.
"I shouldn't have to say it, but I am. No one is going to get a pass," he said. "We're going to follow the facts, apply the law, and be guided by the Constitution beginning on day one. And hold the crooks accountable."
Reactions to the meeting have been mixed. Tommy Vietor, a co-host of "Pod Save America" and former Obama aide, took to X on Sunday to criticize Kushner.

House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York is slamming comments from Hasan Piker after the far-left controversial online streamer suggested that Jewish Americans were inviting violence against themselves over their support for Israel.
"The malicious claim that American Jews are inviting violence against themselves is dangerous and antisemitic," Jeffries charged in a social media post. And he added in a CNN interview on Tuesday that Piker's comments were "malicious" and "should not be tolerated by anyone in the public square."
While Jeffries became the highest-ranking congressional Democrat to fire back at Piker, the criticism from the top Democrat in the U.S. House comes after he has largely stayed silent on the far-left insurgency, backed in part by Piker, that's gripped his party this election cycle.
Jeffries spoke out after Piker, on his stream last week, featured an image of state Sen. Jeremy Moss, the Democratic nominee in Michigan's 11th Congressional District. Moss, who is Jewish, has said that people are sharing a fake audio clip of him claiming that his entire reason for running for Congress is to make sure that America continues to support Israel.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner met in recent weeks and spoke about possible issues of common ground, according to reports, landing the top House Democrat in hot water with some on the political left who have taken issue with the reported get-together.
The men talked about housing, immigration and high living costs as possible categories of common ground, the New York Times reported. Kushner, the husband of Trump's daughter Ivanka, suggested that the lawmaker should meet with White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, two individuals with knowledge of the meet-up noted, according to the outlet.
Fox News Digital reached out to Jeffries' offices and the White House on Monday.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz has bested a young progressive challenger and an embattled former lawmaker after a hard-fought primary characterized by its racial overtones.
Schultz, a 21-year veteran of the House, stressed her seniority on the campaign trail and her ability to deliver services to constituents and secure federal funding for her district.
To secure her primary victory, Schultz defeated former Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who resigned in April following fraud allegations, and 27-year-old activist and teacher Elijah Manley, who is aligned with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., rejected support for Medicare for All and the Democratic Socialists of America's (DSA) agenda Sunday, saying Democrats should prioritize affordability as they seek to recapture the House in November following a wave of progressive primary victories.
"Meet the Press," host Kristen Welker asked Jeffries directly whether he personally supported Medicare for All.
"No, i — as you indicated, I haven't cosponsored the Medicare for All legislation that has been introduced over the last several years," Jeffries said. "I do think we need to figure out how to fix our broken health care system and then build something better once we repair the damage that has been done."
Jeffries also said that as the Democratic leader in the House, it was not legislation he supported, while also reiterating that he wanted to find a path to fix the health care system and "make health care affordable for every single American."

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Sunday that he does not back the agenda of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), even as democratic socialists and left-leaning candidates racked up primary wins in the last few months.
"I don't support the DSA agenda, as has been articulated by the DSA itself. Now, you're going to have individual members who have been elected in Democratic primaries and if they are elected in the general in November, will be part of the House Democratic Caucus. It's going to be a broad caucus. There will be progressives. There will be New Dems. There will be Blue Dogs," Jeffries told NBC News's Kristen Welker on "Meet the Press," noting other factions of the Democratic Party.
"What I'm excited about are the candidates who are running to flip seats in November, to deliver us a majority that pushes back against Donald Trump's extremism and moves the country in the right direction," he added.
Democratic socialists and insurgent progressive candidates have beat out more establishment figures in recent Democratic primaries.
The DSA, a nonprofit activist group, is the central organizational machine behind democratic socialism in the U.S., but some candidates may back democratic socialist ideology without being formal members of the organization.

A lifelong Democrat and former Clinton administration official issued a warning to his party, arguing that radical socialist factions will "destroy" the Democratic Party if leadership fails to act.

"The DSA is a radical extremist movement trying to take over the Democratic Party," Metzl said. "They want to seize the means of production. They want to eradicate police and prisons. They have a terrible message of discord and hate.

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - JUNE 11: Raul Jimenez #9 of Mexico celebrates with teammates after scoring the team's second goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group A match between Mexico and South Africa at Mexico City Stadium on June 11, 2026 in Mexico City, Mexico. (Photo by Carl Recine/Getty Images)
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has now fully settled into its rhythm — and the stories transcending the pitch have only gotten bigger. Last week, we covered Lamine Yamal's sujood, Iran's impossible commute, and the accidental romance between Lawrence, Kansas and Algeria. Week two delivered something even harder to manufacture: a goalkeeper's mother clearing customs in time for a miracle reunion, a team that turned a Houston airport into a fashion week runway, an NFL quarterback becoming America's most beloved cultural ambassador, a Viking cheer that went from Norway to the New York City subway, and a group of kilt-wearing Scots who made Boston fall so hard the city signed a twinning agreement with Glasgow. Here are the five pop culture moments that defined the World Cup's second week.
When Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha broke down in tears after his historic 0-0 draw against Spain last week, he told the world two things: that his grandparents, who raised him, had passed before they could see this moment — and that his mother couldn't afford the bond required to secure a U.S. visa in time to watch him play. The internet responded the way the internet occasionally does when it's at its best.
Within 24 hours, GoFundMe campaigns had surpassed their targets. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries contacted Secretary of State Marco Rubio directly, asking the State Department to do everything in their power to ensure Vozinha’s mother could attend Cape Verde’s next match. Vozinha's mother, Ana Candida Evora, received U.S. visa approval with the intervention of the State Department, began her journey from Cape Verde's capital city of Praia on June 17, and made it to Miami Stadium to watch her son play against Uruguay on June 21.
The broader context matters here. Cape Verde was among 50 countries whose citizens faced bonds of up to $15,000 to secure a U.S. visa, part of broader travel restrictions — a requirement the Trump administration suspended for World Cup ticket holders, though critics noted it came too late for many families. The Vozinha story became a live stress test of that policy, and it ended — for one family, in one stadium — with a reunion on the world’s biggest stage.

Shares of X-Energy (NASDAQ: XE) fell 19% this week, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. The nuclear energy start-up saw a delay in its construction timeline and an **** yst downgrade, which has dragged down the stock since its April IPO.
X-Energy is designing advanced nuclear reactors, partnering with Amazon for future reactor builds. Amazon is also a shareholder in X-Energy, providing upfront capital to build projects to power Amazon data centers.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
The roadblock to development stems from the United States government's lack of official approval for any X-Energy reactor, which has delayed the breaking ground of X-Energy's first project with Amazon until 2027. On top of this, Jeffries downgraded the stock this week, from $30 to $22, sending shares sharply lower.
Modern nuclear reactors can be a valuable source of electricity for powering the AI revolution. However, today, X-Energy does not have much of an actual business and will need to spend massive amounts of money upfront in order to get its reactor designs approved and its manufacturing facilities built.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday he hopes Democrats remember that after the primary elections are over, the party's "enemy is Donald Trump."
MS NOW's Jen Psaki spoke with Jeffries about Israel playing a role in the New York Democratic primary. She asked Jeffries about his reflection on the issue and how Democratic voters may have made their decision to unseat pro-Israel incumbents based on the party's support for Israel amid its nearly three-year war in Gaza.
"I think for us as House Democrats, we're just hopeful that everybody recognizes once we get through this primary season, that the enemy is Donald Trump and MAGA extremism in terms of trying to bring about the type of America that we all desire, where when you work hard and play by the rules, working class folks can live a comfortable life, an affordable life and a good life," Jeffries said after a lengthy answer.
New York races on Tuesday saw Democratic candidates who have been vocal critics of Israel's government and who have led or taken part in pro-Palestinian protests defeat incumbents who have shown support to Israel in the years after the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.
Several of the New York Democratic House challengers who won included former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander (D), Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier.
