WASHINGTON (AP) — The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee said Wednesday that he's going to block a proposed sale of $2.8 billion in heavy weaponry to Israel over concerns that the powerful bombs may not be used in line with U.S. and international law.
Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York said he would withhold approval for the sale because of "grave, unresolved concerns" about how these munitions could be used in densely populated areas of Gaza and Lebanon by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
"The Trump administration has not provided sufficient ****** urances that these weapons will be used by the Netanyahu government in accordance with U.S. law and with appropriate protections for civilians," Meeks said in a statement. "I therefore will not clear this sale at this time."
Meeks' objections, however, will not likely affect the sale, which was informally notified to lawmakers on Tuesday. Once it is formally notified to Congress, Secretary of State Marco Rubio can bypass the normal congressional review process by making an emergency determination that the transaction is an urgent national security interest.
Rubio has done so in the past, including bypassing a normal congressional review process to approve a nearly $3 billion sale to Israel last year. The administration then approved a new series of arms sales to Israel totaling $6.67 billion in January.

Fourteen years ago, Ken Jouppi, who had operated a charter airplane business in Alaska since the 1970s, agreed to fly a passenger from Fairbanks to Beaver, one of the state's dry jurisdictions. The passenger's luggage included 72 cans of Budweiser and Bud Light, which she planned to share with her husband on his birthday. Although most of the beer was boxed, a six-pack "was packed only in a grocery bag and would have been in plain view to Jouppi as he was loading the airplane," the Alaska Supreme Court noted last year.
State troopers discovered the beer before the plane took off, and Jouppi was convicted of a misdemeanor. The trial court, which concluded that Jouppi had been "willfully blind" to the six-pack, sentenced him to three days in jail and a $1,500 fine. But state law mandated another punishment that was 63 times as severe: forfeiture of Jouppi's $95,000 airplane. Although that penalty seemed grossly disproportionate, the Alaska Supreme Court ruled that it did not violate the Eighth Amendment's ban on excessive fines.
In July, responding to a petition filed by the Institute for Justice, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review that decision. It will hear oral argument in Jouppi v. Alaska on December 1. In a brief supporting Jouppi's appeal that it filed last week, the Cato Institute argues that the Alaska Supreme Court erred by failing to consider the gravity of his conduct and the financial consequences of the forfeiture. Both of those factors, Cato attorney Matthew Cavedon says, have been central to the common-law understanding of excessive fines for eight centuries.
"The Eighth Amendment was designed to prevent this kind of abuse by limiting excessive fines," Cavedon writes. "Long before the United States was founded, the common law protected people from extreme monetary penalties. But the Alaska Supreme Court's view is that challenges to excessive fines 'should rarely succeed.' This dismissive view led it to conclude that there is nothing excessive about the forfeiture of an airplane worth 'only 9.5 times the maximum fine'—and over 60 times the fine actually imposed. The decision below cannot be reconciled with this Court's precedent or the Excessive Fines Clause's original meaning."
In weighing the proportionality of the airplane forfeiture, the Alaska Supreme Court thought the relevant consideration was the harm caused by excessive drinking. "Alcohol abuse in rural Alaska leads to increased crime; disorders, such as alcoholism; conditions, such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder; and death, imposing substantial costs on public health and the administration of justice," Justice Jude Pate wrote in the majority opinion. "Within this context, it is clear that the illegal importation of even a six-pack of beer causes grave societal harm."

A prisoner's premature baby died in hospital a day after he was born by emergency Caesarean section, an inquest has heard.
Orion Homer was born at 01:06 on 15 October 2023 at Royal Derby Hospital at 34 weeks plus five days gestation and died the following day.
An inquest at Derby Coroner's Court heard his mother Ellen Roberts was a prisoner at HMP Foston Hall and was taken to the hospital on 14 October after she raised concerns about reduced foetal movement.
Orion was "gravely unwell and very pale" when he was born and needed CPR and breathing support, the inquest heard.
Roberts had spent some of her pregnancy in prison in June and July 2023, before she was released at the end of July but recalled back on 10 October, the jury inquest heard.

Gateway is paying tribute to the late Kyle Busch by introducing the track's new trophy prior to Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race. Busch, who passed away suddenly on May 21, earned his 63rd and final Cup Series win at Gateway, also known as World Wide Technology Raceway, back in June 2023.
Gateway is calling it the "Rowdy" trophy, an homage to Busch's signature nickname he earned during his illustrious NASCAR career. The trophy will be presented to the winner of Sunday's Enjoy Illinois 300, which is the second race of the Chase.

MILAN (AP) — No longer a teenager, Kimi Antonelli is keen to show just how much he has progressed as he prepares for his home grand prix, even though he has to start at the back of the grid.
It was two years ago at Monza that Antonelli was given his Formula 1 debut but that lasted just 10 minutes as the youngster was involved in a high-speed crash in the first practice session for the Italian Grand Prix.
Now Antonelli, who turned 20 last week, arrives as championship leader.
"That definitely was not the way I wanted to introduce myself into the sport," Antonelli said. "If someone, while I was walking off in the gravel, would have said, 'in two years you're going to be leading the world championship in this exact moment,' I would have said 'shut up … don't joke with me.'
"But, you know, it's happening. And, you know, I'm very, very, very happy, very grateful. And just got to keep pushing."

On August 26, Biohaven (NYSE:BHVN) and SK Biopharmaceuticals announced a global licensing agreement covering opakalim, Biohaven's lead epilepsy candidate, in a deal worth up to $795 million plus royalties. SK Biopharmaceuticals picks up exclusive worldwide rights to Biohaven's Kv7 ion channel platform, while Biohaven walks away with $400 million in near-term cash. The timing lines up with an August 10, 2026 earnings report that showed Biohaven still losing well over $100 million a quarter, and the gap between those two dates explains a lot about why this deal happened now.
SK Biopharmaceuticals will pay up to $795 million in upfront and milestone payments connected to the Kv7 platform, on top of tiered royalties on US net sales of opakalim that range from the mid-teens to low twenties. Biohaven collects $350 million at closing and another $50 million in 2027, with as much as $150 million more available through development and regulatory milestones plus royalties on global sales. SK Biopharmaceuticals is also taking over Kv7 program costs going forward, including certain Knopp Biosciences obligations. CEO Vlad Coric described the structure as proof Biohaven can monetize its pipeline through partnerships rather than leaning on public markets for cash.
The deal only makes sense because opakalim looks like it works. In a proof-of-concept study in idiopathic generalized epilepsy, the median time to a second generalized tonic-clonic seizure stretched to 141 days on opakalim versus 47 days on placebo, and a third of patients made it through the full 24 weeks without a second seizure. In focal epilepsy, 54% of patients in an open-label extension study saw at least a 50% drop in seizure frequency over any six months, in a group of more than 100 patients.
Opakalim is also designed as a once-daily pill with no ******* ration required, a real edge over older antiseizure drugs. Pairing that data with SK Biopharmaceuticals, the company behind XCOPRI and the only firm to bring a new focal-seizure drug to the US market since 2016, gives Opakalim a commercial path Biohaven would have struggled to build alone. The cash also buys runway for the rest of the pipeline, including protein degraders BHV-1300 and BHV-1400, which have shown rapid, selective reductions in disease-driving antibodies in Graves' disease and IgA nephropathy with clean safety data across nearly 200 patients dosed.

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY) has agreed to acquire privately held Merida Biosciences for up to $2.875 billion in cash, including an upfront payment and milestone-based payments. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026.
The acquisition expands Lilly's immunology pipeline and gives it access to Merida's antibody-engineering platform, which is designed to selectively eliminate disease-causing autoantibodies while preserving normal immune function. Merida's lead candidate, MER511, is in Phase 1 development for Graves' disease and thyroid eye disease (TED). Early data showed substantial reductions in disease-related antibodies along with a favorable initial safety profile.
The deal also fits Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE:LLY)'s broader strategy of using the cash generated by its obesity and diabetes franchises to diversify into additional therapeutic areas. Lilly has been active in acquisitions throughout 2026, making Merida the latest addition to its expanding pipeline.

The Green Bay Packers' initial 53-man roster entering the 2026 season has been finalized, and it contains an oddity in that Green Bay opted to keep seven defensive tackles.
That is more than they have rostered in Brian Gutekunst's tenure as general manager and the most since 2013. It is a different world from where the Packers were a year ago, as the defensive tackle position looked thin entering the season and was decimated by the end of it.
The fact they have decided to keep so many this time around is perhaps a consequence of wanting to avoid such a situation again, but it is more so a testament to the work done to fortify the room this offseason, as well as some impressive growth by various preexisting players.

With Liverpool already looking a little light in midfield following the sale of Curtis Jones to Inter Milan after the 25-year-old Scouser sought a move away from the club, a lot of fans would have been hoping for news of potential incomings before the transfer window slammed shut.
What they got instead Monday evening was word Nottingham Forest had submitted a £30M bid with £25M gaurunteed for talented 19-year-old midfielder Trey Nyoni, who impressed in pre-season for new head coach Andoni Iraola and was expected to be in his first team plans this season.
The upside is that almost immediately that news was followed up by confirmation that Liverpool had rejected the bid. More than that, the club have signalled that they won't consider any approach for Nyoni because he is in fact in Iraola's first team plans for the 2026-27 season.
Liverpool signed Nyoni out of Leicester City's academy in 2023, eventually paying around £1M after the case was sent to tribunal. The young midfielder has made 20 first team appearances to date over his three seasons at the club, with 14 of those (with six in the league) coming last season.
Nyoni was often deployed as the deepest midfielder, taking on the role Ryan Gravenberch will be expected to fill most often for the Reds this season, and with no further midfield signings expected at the moment it does seem likely he will see significant first team action over the next year.

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Chalk up another one who fell to the "Graveyard of Champions."
Saratoga Race Course has long been known as the track where some of horse racing's greatest legends suffered their most surprising losses. Saturday, another superstar was defeated at the Spa, as Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo could only muster a late-closing third in a Travers Stakes won by the inexperienced Leading Change, who was making just his third career start.
After winning the Derby and Belmont with similar late runs, Golden Tempo lingered at the back of the pack early in the Travers in company with his familiar rival, Renegade.
But unlike during the Triple Crown season, on Saturday the speed horses were able to hang on at the front of the field. Frontrunner Napoleon Solo held the lead deep into the stretch until the Brad **** -trained Leading Change, who sat second throughout the race under jockey Manny Franco, made his final surge to win by a half-length.
"The pace was slow, and I thought that was gonna be to our detriment," said Golden Tempo's trainer, Cherie DeVaux. "The horses in front of us are definitely quality horses … it didn't work out for us today."

Major League Baseball reportedly opened an investigation and then suspended a sought-after Dominican prospect for an alleged scheme that included a fake name, age, birth certificate and even gravestone in order to falsify his identity and make him appear to be younger, according to an ESPN report.
David Severino was purportedly a switch-hitting infielder around the age of 14. He reportedly agreed to a $2.8 million deal with the Guardians that would be finalized in 2029, when he'd turn 17 and be eligible to sign.
But, it turns out his real name is Daury David Severino Damaso, and he's actually 16 years old, according to the reported investigation. Allegedly, with the consent of his parents and with the help of a trainer, the identity of David Severino Damaso was created to appear to be Daury's younger brother. A fake, late-filed birth registration was made under that name, along with falsified medical records.

Aside from Liverpool's attack, their defensive midfielders are one of their biggest problems.

Five years ago, Amber Uhler set what, back then, seemed like an "impossible" goal.
At the time, Uhler, a mom to three, weighed 300 lbs. She tells PEOPLE of attending a doctor's appointment, where she was told, "You're morbidly obese, you're pre-diabetic, you're on a path to an early grave, and you're probably not going to live to see your kids graduate high school."
For Uhler, that appointment set in motion what she calls the "wakeup call" she "needed."
That same weekend, Uhler opens up about the moment she jumped into a foam pit at a trampoline park while playing with her children. "I got stuck, and ****** ody could get me out," she says. "Three big, beefy muscle men formed a human chain to try to pull me out, and even they couldn't do it, and they thought they were going to have to call the fire department. I've never been so humiliated in my life."

Alvotech (NASDAQ:ALVO) extended its winning streak to a 5th consecutive day on Monday, jumping 18.51 percent to finish at $5.25 apiece, after the Bank of America (BofA) raised its price target for the company.
In its recent coverage, BofA initiated a buy recommendation on Alvotech shares with a price target of $7, amid the closure of the inspection of its manufacturing facility in Iceland, alongside progress in the commercialization of two of its drug candidates in the US and Asia.
The coverage followed the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) voluntary closure of its inspection of Alvotech's (NASDAQ:ALVO) manufacturing facility in Reykjavik, Iceland, over several practices at its plant in Reykjavik, such as handling of complaints, subpar contamination prevention procedures, and poor quality and purity vetting, among others.
"This is an important milestone for Alvotech and reflects the significant work our teams have undertaken to further strengthen our quality systems and manufacturing operations," CEO Lisa Graver said.
"With the conclusion of the FDA's recent inspection, we are confident that the actions we have taken have effectively addressed the observations identified. We continue to work with the FDA to advance our recent Biologics License Applications towards approval," she noted.
