PARIS, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Premium German car brand Audi on Monday introduced a new compact electric vehicle to boost its presence at the smaller end of the European market, where Chinese automakers are launching more affordable models, and help revive its global sales.
Sales at Audi, a unit of Volkswagen, have fallen for two consecutive years and slid 7% in the first half of 2026 as fierce competition in China and U.S. tariffs hit demand.
"In Europe, we need compact and efficient cars for the future," Audi CEO Gernot Doellner told Reuters in a two-century-old industrial building in the heart of Paris where the new A2 e-tron was revealed to the press.
"Premium cannot just mean more — more power, more resources — it has to mean using resources more intelligently."

McLaren spent the first half of 2026 looking like last year's champion team in name only. The wins dried up, the new car took time to come alive and even as Lando Norris kept putting points on the board, the gap to Kimi Antonelli kept growing. Then Hungary happened, Zandvoort followed, and two weeks was all it took to change the mood of the season.
Norris has now won the last two grands prix and sits fourth in the standings at 159 points, 83 behind Antonelli and 24 behind Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, who are tied at 183. That is still a mountain for Norris and McLaren to climb, but it is no longer out of the question.

Carlos Sainz's Ferrari exit in 2025 as a result of Lewis Hamilton's arrival pushed him to begin a fresh journey with Williams, a team that was struggling to score points. In his second year with the Grove-based outfit, Sainz finds himself at a crossroads as he decides whether to extend his stay with Williams, with his current contract set to expire at the end of this year. It's the first game of the season for the Bayern Munich women!
The FC Bayern Frauen kick it off in the women's edition of the DFL-Supercup against familiar foes VfL Wolfsburg. The Bavarians bested the She-Wolves 4-2 in last year's Supercup, and went on to a domestic double with the Bundesliga ****** le as well.
"It's the first chance to win a ****** le. We want to keep raising our standards, hone our style of play and improve every single player both physically and technically. Such hard-fought and challenging matches help our team grow," said Bayern coach José Barcala in his pre-match comments captured via FCBayern.com.
Added center-back Glódís Viggósdóttir: "It's always special to play against Wolfsburg. We share a history of great and thrilling encounters – I love such matches. I'm really looking forward to a match where there's something at stake."

PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns and veteran forward Dillon Brooks agreed to a $73 million, three-year extension on Wednesday that will keep him with the team through 2030, according to two people familiar with the deal.
The people spoke to The ******* ociated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn't been announced.
The 30-year-old Brooks averaged a career-high 20.2 points last season, his first with the Suns. He provided scoring and a hard-nosed defensive personality that helped the team make a surprise run to the playoffs.
Brooks is entering the final season of an $86 million, four-year deal he signed with the Houston Rockets in 2023.
The Suns have spent much of the offseason locking up the core of last season's team to long-term deals, including guards Collin Gillespie and Jordan Goodwin, along with center Mark Williams. Phoenix also traded for forward Miles Bridges, sending Grayson Allen and Royce O'Neale to Charlotte.

Ganesh, who uses she/they ***** ouns, never felt comfortable with rigid gender and ***** uality labels, and Foucault's The History of ***** uality, Volume I showed her how these categories have in fact varied across cultures and through history: "I think this idea of defining ***** uality is very new—or at least that's the argument he's making … it really illuminated a lot of that for me."
Ganesh was unwittingly providing fresh evidence for the central argument of The Frenchmen: Or, My Life in Theory, which proposes that a small group of dead twentieth-century intellectuals are "crucial for understanding the world we inhabit today." Written by Emily Eakin, a senior editor at The New York Times Book Review, The Frenchmen focuses on eight French or French-speaking theorists (Louis Althusser, Roland Barthes, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, Félix Guattari, Jacques Lacan, and Paul de Man) who, she argues, "permanently alter[ed] how we think not only about bedrock philosophical ideas but about the role of language in shaping those beliefs and everything else."
Eakin's Frenchmen are an eclectic group, differing in interests, politics, and methods. Two were practicing psychoanalysts. Most were academics, working in fields including philosophy, linguistics, semiotics, anthropology, history, and comparative literature. They wrote on topics as varied as schizophrenia, prison architecture, photography, Edgar Allan Poe, and (in Barthes's case) their mom. What unites them, according to Eakin, is their emphasis on systems, as opposed to individuals, and their attention to the complex and contradictory ways that language operates. Terrence Hill Jr. delivered the biggest sequence of his college career in the Men's NCAA Tournament for VCU, then spent less than a month deciding his encore belonged with Tennessee basketball.
Hill, a 6-foot-3 guard, committed to Tennessee on April 19, choosing the Vols over Kansas. He's now positioned to compete for one of the starting guard jobs on a Tennessee roster that lost All-SEC guard Ja'Kobi Gillespie to the NBA draft.
Hill said he'd already pictured himself in Tennessee's offense before making his visit to Knoxville, watching Gillespie's ascent under coach Rick Barnes from afar.
"It was funny because last year I was watching the tournament when Tennessee played," Hill said July 13. "I think it was the Sweet 16 game. I was like, 'Ja'Kobi's going crazy, that could be me out there.' I was talking to my agent about it."
Barnes saw that same potential when he made the commitment official.

San Antonio defeated Milwaukee, 90-80, on Sunday in the NBA Summer League at ******* Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nevada. Four former Vols appeared in the contest, including three starters.
Nate Ament started for the Bucks and played 25 minutes. He totaled seven points and five rebounds. Ament converted 3-of-7 field goal attempts and 1-of-2 three-point attempts.
Ja'Kobi Gillespie and Igor Milicic Jr. also started in the game for the Spurs. Gillespie recorded 13 points, four rebounds, one ******* ist and two steals in 27 minutes. Milicic Jr. finished the game with 10 points, six rebounds, one ******* ist and one steal in 24 minutes.

Jul. 10—Noah Gillespie worked five high-traffic, low-impact innings and Boe Miles homered as Libby scored a bounce-back 11-5 win over Sasquatch 17U in Legion baseball action Tuesday. The San Antonio Spurs made several thought-provoking roster moves on Monday.
The wisest of them all was signing Victor Wembanyama’s perfect backup center after acquiring him from the Denver Nuggets during the NBA Draft.
“The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed first-round selections Jayden Quaintance (20th overall) and Tarris Reed Jr. (26th overall), along with San Antonio’s second-round picks Ja’Kobi Gillespie (42nd overall) and Maliq Brown (44th overall),” the organization announced.
“Reed Jr., 6-10/270, appeared in 136 games (67 starts) over four seasons at Michigan (2022-24) and UConn (2024-26), averaging 9.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.50 blocks while shooting 59.1% from the field."

PARIS, July 5 - The third stage of the Tour de France that will take place on Monday will be closed to the public due to risks posed by a forest fire raging in southwestern France, officials said on Sunday.
The fire has ravaged more than 1,600 hectares (6.18 square miles) some 60 km (37 miles) from the finish line in Les Angles and is still spreading.
Images of the fire show billowing black smoke, with eyewitnesses reporting scorching winds, hot ground, difficulty breathing in the vicinity and poor visibility beyond 2 metres (6.56 feet).
The race route will remain unchanged, but the Tour's publicity caravan will not drive along the last 40 km into France from Spain where it began on Saturday.

Bradford City have signed Charlton Athletic defender Macaulay Gillesphey for an undisclosed fee on a two-year deal.
The 30-year-old made 96 league appearances for the Addicks and helped them win promotion to the Championship via the play-offs in 2025.
Gillesphey, who started his career with Newcastle, also won the League One ***** le during his time with Plymouth.
"He is a very good defender with excellent ability in possession and his attributes will help us progress, and he was very determined to join us," boss Graham Alexander told the club website.

The Phoenix Suns starting center, a restricted free agent, plans to sign a three-year, $38 million contract to return to the team, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
Williams, a former 15th overall pick for the Charlotte Hornets, joined the Suns last offseason via a draft night trade. He quickly developed into a quality starter for the Suns, who reached the playoffs via the NBA play-in tournament and got swept in the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Williams' main issue last year was a foot fracture that forced him nearly all of March. Health has been an issue in general for Williams, who has yet to appear in more than 60 games in a single season.
The deal gives the Suns a clean sweep of re-signing their priority free agents, as they retained Collin Gillespie on a four-year, $48 million deal last week, then kept Jordan Goodwin on a three-year, $19 million deal.

The Tennessee Volunteers finally had another player come off the board in the 2026 NBA Draft, and it’s quite the team who picked him.
Vols guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie was tabbed by the current Western Conference champion San Antonio Spurs with pick No. 42 overall in the second round of the draft on Wednesday night.
It’s obviously a tremendous opportunity for Gillespie in San Antonio, if he can carve out a role for himself on a team that’s right on the edge of the pinnacle of the sport. The Spurs have themselves to blame for losing the NBA Finals in five games to the New York Knicks. They blew massive leads in multiple games, including a 29-point gag job in Game 4 in Madison Square Garden. So, clearly, they’re good enough to win it all, and having a superstar like Victor Wembayana makes another run a distinct possibility in 2026-27 and beyond.
So, it’s a great situation for Gillespie to land in as far as potential to win. How he fits and what kind of role he earns for himself remains to be seen.

The Orlando Magic selected Tennessee basketball's premier shot blocker with the 46th overall pick in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft on June 23.
He follows teammates Nate Ament and Ja'Kobi Gillespie as the third player picked from Tennessee in this draft. Ament went to the Milwaukee Bucks with the 13th overall pick, while Gillespie went at No. 42 to the San Antonio Spurs.
Okpara took a leap of faith as a teenager, coming to the United States and leaving his family in Lagos, Nigeria. His circuitous basketball path led him to high school in Chattanooga, and he spent two seasons at Ohio State before returning to Tennessee to play for the Vols.

Among all of the speculation that the San Antonio Spurs could look to move on from point guard De'Aaron Fox, there are certain teams around the NBA that make a lot more sense to trade for the former All-Star than others.
While Fox had a rough playoff series, I think it's important that Spurs fans and the front office look at his whole body of work, which suggests that he's still an above-average player. The only thing I can agree with is that moving on from Fox would make sense because of Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.
Regardless, it would take two teams to make a trade if the Spurs decide to go that route, and according to a writer at The Athletic, a few teams could make sense. One of them he brought up was the Phoenix Suns, who recently re-signed Collin Gillespie, so a deal would make more sense around Jalen Green, Grayson Allen, or some pairing of Green, Allen, and Royce O'Neale.
"Here's the team that I think you can very easily make a case for doing this: Phoenix. Phoenix probably wants a point guard. I know that they could easily re-sign Colin Gillespie, but Colin Gillespie can be like an elite sixth man in the NBA," Sam Vecenie said. Jordan Goodwin and the Suns have agreed to a three-year, $19 million contract (with a player option on the final season), a story broken by Shams Charania of ESPN and since confirmed by other sources.
Goodwin found a home on the court last season in Phoenix after bouncing around the league for a few years and being waived by the Lakers (to create a roster spot to sign Marcus Smart). Coming off the bench (primarily) for the Suns, he played 70 games and scored 8.7 points a night while shooting 37.1% from 3-point range. He was part of a solid guard rotation in Phoenix. Along with Booker, Gillespie, Grayson Allen and Jalen Green, the Suns formed a quality guard rotation last season that helped lead the team to 45 wins.

PHOENIX – After re-signing Collin Gillespie to a four-year, $48 million deal, the Phoenix Suns will shift their focus towards starting center Mark Williams. The franchise doesn’t have a lot of money to work with this offseason, as bringing back Gillespie and Williams seemed impossible. However, Phoenix was able to sign the 26-year-old guard to a $12 million annual, when experts believe Gillespie was looking for high-teens in a deal. The discount opens the door for a possible Williams return.
The problem remains is that the only avenue that the Suns would bring back the 24-year-old is on the qualifying offer. His injury history could scare teams from topping that deal, but it cuts the team close to crossing the luxury tax and near the first apron.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay likes the job athletic director Josh Moon has done in his first four years so much it wants him to stick around longer.
UWGB Chancellor Michael Alexander announced June 17 that the school has signed Moon to a contract extension through 2031.
Moon’s contract can be extended an additional year if Alexander leaves the school any time prior to June 30, 2031.
He is set to become the longest-tenured AD at UWGB since Ken Bothof left after 11 years for Northern Kentucky in 2013.
Mary Ellen Gillespie replaced Bothof and spent four years at UWGB before leaving for Hartford. Her replacement, Charles Guthrie, also spent four years here before being hired at Akron and paving the way for Moon’s arrival.
