NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets slugger Juan Soto was reinstated from the 10-day injured list on Saturday ahead of the team's game against the Houston Astros.
The five-time All-Star landed on the injured list last month for the second time this season after imaging revealed a grade 2 strain.
Soto had been nursing the nagging calf problem for about a week before he left a game against the Dodgers in discomfort. He walked twice against Los Angeles starter Roki Sasaki during a 4-2 loss at Citi Field before being replaced by pinch-hitter Jorge Polanco in the sixth inning with the score tied at 1.
Soto is hitting .283 with 21 homers, 52 RBIs and a .947 OPS in 84 games during his second season with the Mets.
The Mets also optioned infielder Eric Wagaman to Triple-A following Friday night's 3-1 loss to the Astros.

San Antonio FC will try to halt a recent slide and regain their footing in the USL Championship Western Conference table when they take on a hot New Mexico United club Saturday on the road.
SAFC (8-5-8, 32 points), which sits in fifth place, and conference leading New Mexico (11-4-4, 37 points) kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.
San Antonio steps into the challenging high-altitude environment of Albuquerque against New Mexico, which has propelled itself to the top spot in Western Conference based on winning nine of its last 11 league matches. New Mexico has not lost a league match in more than three months - the last of which came in a 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rowdies on May 20.
In contrast, SAFC is trying to shake off last week's 1-0 home loss to the Oakland Roots SC, which was its second straight loss at Toyota Field. The back-to-back home losses have dropped SAFC from second place to fifth in the Western Conference standings.
"I do think it's going to be a difficult game, obviously, in that environment (at New Mexico)," SAFC midfielder Nicky Hernandez said. "They have a lot of fans, they're very loud and they're hot right now and we got to come in there and try to ruin that for them. It will be an interesting game."

The high school football season kicks off this week with 16 coaches making their debuts in Greater San Antonio. About half are veteran coaches who landed at a new school. The others are getting a chance to lead a program for the first time.
Regardless of their experience, each job has its challenges. Here's a look at the challenges each coach faces at his new position:
Myles Duelm, Madison
Duelm is taking the reins of a program that lost one of the city's top football players to graduation. Wide receiver Jordan Clay is now at the University of Washington after spending all four years of his high school career at Madison. Although Duelm is a first-year head coach, he has plenty of familiarity with the region. He was previously Reagan's offensive coordinator and also worked at Brandeis.
Vernon Hughes, Judson
Hughes takes over a team that hasn't had a winning season since 2021, which is a shocker considering the Rockets' reputation as San Antonio's most decorated football program. Hughes takes over for Mark Soto, a Judson alum who played for and won a state championship under D.W. Rutledge in 1988 but was unable to restore the Rockets to state prominence from the sidelines. The Rockets are never short on talent. Hughes' task will be utilizing that talent to get the Rockets back on track in one of Region IV's toughest Class 6A districts.
Matt McKinney, Harlan
McKinney is tasked with leading one of the city's top 6A programs in his first season as a head coach. He will look to sustain the success the Hawks had under Eddie Salas, who led Harlan to the postseason in all eight of its varsity seasons. While McKinney is in a new role, he is no stranger to the program after serving as Harlan's offensive coordinator since the school opened.

As Mark Vientos nears a return from his rehab **** ignment, the question of how the slugging right-hander fits into this version of the Mets was raised to interim manager Andy Green, and the skipper did not mince words.
"I don't know," Green said prior to Wednesday's game with the Brewers. "I was very forthright with him when he started the rehab **** ignment that a lot of that will be dictated by how others perform and also by how he performs. Still think there's a very bright future for him out there if he wants to grab a hold of it. That's on him."
The current construction of the Mets roster doesn't lend itself to a lot of at-bats for Vientos to start with. Even with the added roster spot on Sept. 1, the team has to use the DH spot to give time to other players, including Brett Baty, Francisco Alvarez and Luis Robert Jr., as well as the eventual return of Juan Soto, who could see time as DH.
Vientos, who was placed on the IL back on July 10 with a fractured hand, has played three minor league games between Double-A and Triple-A. In that span, he's 0-for-9 with a walk and five strikeouts.
With no remaining options, Vientos will rejoin the team, but as Green put it Wednesday, it'll be a proving ground for the young slugger.

The 12-year-old at the Albuquerque Sign Language Academy has her own YouTube channel where she signs — yes, signs — the lyrics to her favorite songs, often while dancing around.
She also has enough personality, and heart, to fill a baseball stadium.
"Am I dreaming?!" she asked a reporter last week while at Isotopes Park working with Isotopes players.
Maddie and her classmates from the Albuquerque Sign Language Academy — the fightin' Honey Badgers, of course — spent last Friday helping the Albuquerque Isotopes get things right for the upcoming Sept. 4 American Sign Language Night game at Rio Grande Credit Union Field.

The Milwaukee Brewers are set to face the Mets in New York this week, as the Crew looks to continue their winning ways. The Brewers, at 81-50 this season, sit firmly atop the NL Central after winning each of their last three series against the Dodgers, Mariners, and Braves. The Mets, at 59-72, sit at the bottom of the NL East with the sixth-worst record in baseball. They've actually been a bit better the last couple of weeks, with a 6-3 record against the Nationals, Padres, and White Sox.
Milwaukee's lone position player on the IL is outfielder Sal Frelick, who is expected to return for this road trip. However, the team suffered a pair of injuries in Sunday's Little League Classic, as outfielder Garrett Mitchell exited after being hit by a pitch with what was categorized as a right forearm contusion, and first baseman Jake Bauers, who has been playing with a toe fracture this season, fouled a ball off his leg/foot, though he remained in the game. It's unclear if either player will miss more time, but overall, not the worst news on that front. On the mound, the Brewers are without Brandon Woodruff (potentially back before the end of the year after not needing surgery), JoJo Romero (late August), Abner Uribe (could be activated on Wednesday), Rob Zastryzny (TBD), Joel Kuhnel (late August), Brian Fitzpatrick (out for season), Quinn Priester (out for season), and Angel Zerpa (out for season).

The New York Mets have been abysmal since the middle of last season, ranking as one of the worst teams in baseball over the last calendar year.
Recently, however, that's started to change. The Mets have quietly been excellent this month, going 11-4 over their last 15 games.

Baseball pitching great Tommy John died at his Florida home on Saturday night. He was 83.
Unfortunately for many, remembering his game takes a backseat to the fact that his name is commonly ***** ociated with one of the sport's most common surgeries.
The four-time MLB All-Star with a career ERA of just 3.34 was 31 in 1974 when he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. Los Angeles Dodgers team physician Dr. Frank Jobe replaced the ligament with a tendon from the forearm in his non-pitching arm.
Long story short, he pitched for 14 more years and his name — is ***** ociated with the procedure — Tommy John surgery — now so widely ***** ociated with baseball that it churned up numbers like the ones Albuquerque Isotopes broadcaster and baseball journalist/historian Josh Suchon shared on his Substack page on Monday.
In the essay Suchon wrote — "When did people start calling it Tommy John surgery?" — he noted a rather interesting, albeit unplanned, tribute of sorts to John by the Isotopes in their game Sunday, the day his passing was announced.

Several Shreveport-Bossier area high school cheerleading and dance groups will be headed to Lake Charles later this year to compete in the 2026 Louisiana High School Cheer & Dance Championships after a recent announcement by the LHSAA that it is adding those sports to its championship calendar after more than a decade of silence.
"It's a fantastic idea," Northwood cheer sponsor Rebecca Galambos said. "I'm glad to see cheer and dance recognized as a sport."
The state championships will be held Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at the Lake Charles Event Center featuring cheer and dance across multiple styles. The contending squads will compete in two rounds on the first day with the third round on Day 2. The LHSAA brought back the championships due to concerted efforts of the Louisiana cheer and dance community through a steering committee led by Louisiana High School Coaches ****** ociation director Jessica Barber.

The Cowboys are signing 37-year-old eight-time Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller, according to a report late Sunday from ESPN's Adam Schefter and later confirmed by the team. A first-round draft pick out of Texas A&M in 2011, Miller has played with four different teams previously, most recently the Washington Commanders last season, when he tallied nine sacks.
Miller already considers the Dallas area home and owns a poultry farm in nearby DeSoto. He has been lobbying for a spot on the Cowboys roster during this offseason, even creating a series of social media posts to help apply pressure on the organization.

Greg Hurst did what he does every time he arrived for a post-match interview. The New Mexico United forward sprang up from the bench inside the visitor's dugout at Isotopes Park and strolled over alone, ready to answer a variety of questions.
At least, that's what initially happened before it was agreed that Saturday was better for Hurst to do this round with a bit of extra support. In a manner of speaking, anyway.
So, off he went and returned with "Little Greg" in tow.
It was made from what looked to be black and yellow posterboard. It had Hurst's last name painted on the back. It was more than a foot high and attached to some kind of pole so it could be held up and waived around.
A young fan made it and presented it to Hurst after the match. The fan certainly picked a good time to bring some custom artwork.

Last night the bats just could not get going and the bullpen faltered. That led to a disappointing 4-1 loss. Now the boys will have to regroup and try to even the series. Hopefully the league's highest scoring offense can figure out the Mets makeshift pitching staff.
With a lefty on the mound, there will be plenty of changes to the lineup. Dylan Crews will lead off and play right. CJ Abrams is at short again despite the announcement of his move to second base. Andrew Pinckney and Harry Ford are also back in the lineup. Brad Lord will start as his reintegration into the rotation continues.
The Mets have a couple new faces at the bottom of their lineup. Brett Baty will play left field and Jorge Polanco will DH. Otherwise it is the same group as last night. Francisco Lindor will lead the way without Juan Soto. Sean Manaea has been throwing the ball much better lately and will be on the mound today.

Juan Soto, the Mets' biggest bat and their biggest star, has been out with a calf injury since late July, but wants to return to the team before the end of the 2026 season.
With New York's playoff chances dwindling after being sellers at the trade deadline, it would be understandable if Soto was shut down for the rest of the year as he recovers, but the Mets' lone All-Star this season vows to be back with this team.
"We are playing really good baseball right now," Soto told MLB.com ahead of Friday's series opener with the Nationals. "Why not try to rejoin this team? It would be really fun. It would be great for me and the team. [I want to] finish the season strong and keep the momentum for next year, too."
Entering play Friday, the Mets are 5-3 since the Aug. 3 trade deadline and are getting major contributions from the young kids and some recent call-ups.
But New York could use an infusion of Soto. Before this latest injury, Soto was having a Soto-like season. However, being available has been a challenge for Soto. The slugger has missed 38 games entering Friday between his first stint on the IL with a right calf strain and this current injury to his left leg.

In a disappointing season, the young duo of Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing has been a bright spot for this team. Journeyman Robert Stock will be on the mound tonight.

Oklo Inc. (NYSE:OKLO) just proved it can build a nuclear reactor as fast as it promised. On August 6, the company announced its Groves Isotope Test Reactor in Lockhart, Texas, achieved first criticality, a controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction, less than a year after groundbreaking. It's the first project under the US Department of Energy's Reactor Pilot Program to reach criticality on private land from a greenfield site, and Oklo says it may be the fastest privately funded, privately sited reactor build in history.
CEO Jacob DeWitte called it "an incredible milestone for our team," noting Oklo built Groves from raw land, handled the civil excavation and construction itself, and manufactured or procured every component, including fuel, in-house. On the company's August 7 earnings call, management put the timeline at under 11 months from greenfield to criticality. Groves is meant to anchor Oklo's isotope business, supplying materials for healthcare, industry, research, ******* e, and national security, with revenue expected to begin in the first half of 2027 out of a commercial Idaho radiochemistry lab.
Management says the engineering practices, training programs, and commissioning experience from Groves should reduce execution risk across the company's future isotope, powerhouse, and fuel cycle projects. The balance sheet backs that ambition, with $3 billion in cash and marketable securities on hand after Oklo raised $1.9 billion in 2026 through its at-the-market programs. The broader pipeline kept moving too, with Aurora-INL site excavation nearly complete and a Kiewit memorandum of understanding advancing the 1.2-gigawatt Ohio Power Campus that will supply Meta. Shares jumped more than 10% on August 7, the day after the update, coinciding with the earnings report.
The milestone came alongside a bigger bill. Oklo reported a net loss of $81.6 million for the quarter, with an operating loss of $124.2 million, and the company still has no forward price-to-earnings ratio because it isn't yet profitable. Management raised its 2026 operating cash flow guidance to $120 million to $150 million, up from $80 million to $100 million, and lifted capital expenditure guidance to $400 million to $500 million from $350 million to $450 million, both tied to accelerated procurement for Aurora-INL and opportunistic fuel purchases. Groves itself is also a test reactor for isotopes, not Oklo's commercial power business. The Aurora-INL project that would validate the company's powerhouse platform isn't targeted to start up until 2028, and the first phase of the Aurora-Ohio powerhouse meant to supply Meta's data centers isn't expected until early 2030.

On Thursday, the NL West club signed a nine-year veteran with 22 career saves to a minor league deal.
According to Charlie Wright of MLB Trade Rumors, right-hander Dennis Santana has agreed to join the D-Backs on a minor league contract.
Santana opened the season as the top closer option for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He went 2-for-4 in his first handful of opportunities and was replaced by left-hander Gregory Soto.

Ever since the New York Mets signed Juan Soto, there have been rumors of tension between him and Francisco Lindor, the face of the franchise before Soto's arrival.
The fact that the team has been extremely disappointing for the last two seasons likely has not helped things, but both players have publicly denied any beef. However, that does not mean things were sunshine and rainbows behind the scenes.
According to ESPN's Jorge Castillo, there was lingering tension between the two, but Freddy Peralta, who is now with the Tampa Bay Rays, arranged for the two to sit down and work things out.
"With tension lingering into their second season as teammates, multiple sources told ESPN that Peralta in June arranged for the two stars to vent and work through their disconnect," Castillo wrote on Wednesday. "Since then, sources told ESPN, Lindor and Soto's relationship has been noticeably warmer, with the players interacting more often."

August 3 (Reuters) - U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor declined on Monday to halt $655.5 million in damages that Palestinian authorities were ordered to pay plaintiffs in a U.S. civil lawsuit concerning ‌attacks that killed and injured Americans in Israel from 2002 to 2004.
Sotomayor denied a request by the ‌Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization to put on hold the judgment while they appeal a lower court's decision to revive the case years after it had been dismissed. The lawsuit was brought on behalf of Americans killed or injured in those shootings and bombings in the Jerusalem area.
The Supreme Court last year upheld a federal law that allowed claims like those brought by the plaintiffs in the case.
Sotomayor did not explain her decision and did not refer the case to the entire court. ‌Sotomayor handles emergency matters for cases arising ⁠from New York and certain other states.

Monday was Major League Baseball's trade deadline. and the Colorado Rockies were sellers.
For the big-league team, that generally means sending out good, current major-league level players and replacing them, again generally speaking, with still developing minor league players.
And for the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes, what Monday's trade deadline means is star players like Charlie Condin and Zac Veen are still in the organization, although they could be heading to replenish the Rockies roster soon.
It also means the Isotopes will likely be getting some new names/faces as soon during as this week's six-game homestand against the Sugar Land ***** e Cowboys. At least three — RHP Mason Adams, LHP Mark Manfredi and INF Connor Norby — have already been ***** igned to report to the Isotopes this week.
And while he's not yet on a homecoming trip to Albuquerque, Sandia High graduate Aiden May, a 23-year-old right handed pitcher who was drafted out of Oregon State in 2024, was acquired by the Rockies in a trade with the Miami Marlins and could be an Isotope in the next couple of years if his minor-league progression continues. He was ranked as Miami's No. 27 minor-league prospect.

The Detroit Tigers have released right-handed pitcher Duque Hebbert from the organization during their weekend series against the Athletics.
The Lakeland Flying Tigers announced the transaction Saturday, ending Hebbert's three-year run in Detroit's minor-league system.
Hebbert first captured national attention while pitching for Nicaragua during the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
Then 21 years old, Hebbert struck out Juan Soto, Julio Rodríguez and Rafael Devers in the same inning against the Dominican Republic. All three were established MLB stars, making the performance one of the tournament's biggest surprise moments.
Detroit signed Hebbert to a minor-league contract weeks later, hoping that his WBC breakthrough could lead to something more.
