Star striker Thembi Kgatlana scored as South Africa edged Burkina Faso 1-0 on Tuesday to squeeze into the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-finals in Morocco.
Mexico-based Kgatlana struck her second goal of the tournament after 21 minutes in Casablanca, then her team withstood continuous second-half pressure in a tense match.
The winning goal will haunt Burkinabe central defender Madinatou Rouamba, who failed to cut off a cross from Fikile Magama, leaving Kgatlana to tap the ball past goalkeeper Nina Dabilgou.
Burkina Faso were awarded a penalty just two minutes into the second half, but the decision by the Cameroonian referee was reversed after a VAR review.

RC Lens goalkeeper Hervé Koffi (29) is reportedly set to join Union Saint-Gilloise, according to La DH. The move is expected to take the form of a loan with an option to buy.
Having already been on loan last season, the Burkinabé goalkeeper enjoyed a top-class campaign with SCO Angers, where he established himself as one of Ligue 1's very best goalkeepers. Back at Lens this summer, however, the Dobo-Dioulasso native is not expected to stay there for long, as he appears to be blocked by competition from Robin Risser (21).
In Belgium, Koffi will thus return to a league he knows well, having previously played for Royal Excel Mouscron in 2020-21, then for Royal Charleroi SC from 2021 to 2024. With the Unionists, the 29-year-old goalkeeper will also have the opportunity to experience the Champions League, as he faces the daunting task of replacing Kjell Scherpen (26), who moved this summer to Ipswich Town, newly promoted to the Premier League.

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (AP) — Burkina Faso's military government severed diplomatic ties with France, its former colonial ruler that had been a key security partner for the West African nation before relations fractured.
The junta said in a statement Friday it broke off relations with France effective immediately, accusing it of "blatant neo-colonial ambitions and active support for subversive networks and terrorists," without providing evidence.
France's Foreign Minsitry spokesman Pascal Confavreux said in a statement that the country regrets the "hostile and unfounded decision, which illustrates the worrying drift of the Burkinabè authorities."
"Necessary reciprocal measures are currently under review," he said. Confavreux added that France is monitoring the safety of French government personnel and citizens in Burkina Faso and urged them to exercise heightened vigilance.
The West African country of 23 million people has been battered by yearslong violence perpetrated by extremist groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group, as well as government forces often accused of extrajudicial killings. Its wider Sahel region is the world's deadliest region for extremism.

With Alejandro Grimaldo reportedly on the verge of joining Atlético Madrid for a fee in the region of €25 million, Bayer Leverkusen are already moving to identify a replacement.
According to Bild, Raphael Guerreiro is among the options being considered. The versatile 32-year-old is available on a free transfer after leaving Bayern Munich and, like Grimaldo, offers a strong left foot and extensive top-level experience.
However, new Leverkusen head coach Carles Martínez is said to prefer a more pace-driven profile for the left-back position.

African nation counters Trump's travel ban by prohibiting visas for Americans
With Donald Trump expanding the travel ban inspired by his first term in the White House to 20 more countries, as well as the Palestinian Authority, on Dec. 16, a total of 39 countries from different corners of the world now face either a total ban or restrictions on entering the United States.
Mali, South Sudan, Niger, Burkina Faso, Syria, and the Palestinian Authority have been added to the list of nations whose citizens cannot enter the U.S. at all, first introduced in June.
