Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles' offense provided an accurate summary of their summer during Tuesday night's open practice at Lincoln Financial Field. There were explosive plays, creative formations and impressive touchdown throws. There were also protection problems, missed opportunities and two interceptions returned toward the end zone by Riq Woolen.
The overall performance was uneven. The encouraging part was that the offense showed how difficult it could become to defend when its top skill players are healthy.
Hurts connected with Smith on a deep out route during the opening move-the-ball period. He found Smith again while rolling outside the pocket on a play-action concept. Smith later made one of the night's best catches, securing a deep crossing route in tight coverage against Quinyon Mitchell before accelerating toward the end zone. The chemistry was not perfect. Hurts underthrew Smith on a deep post that could have become a touchdown. Mitchell recovered to break up the pass. Smith also dropped a shallow crossing route on third-and-6 despite having enough **** e to extend the possession.
Their strongest connection may have come later when Smith caught a dig route against Woolen. The cornerback attempted to undercut the route, but Smith adjusted his angle, secured the pass and turned upfield for what could have become a touchdown in a live game.
Hurts' first interception came on a throw over the middle intended for Makai Lemon. Woolen recognized the dig route, drove in front of the rookie and took the football toward the end zone. The second interception occurred in two minutes. Hurts faced pressure from Jalyx Hunt and threw off his back foot toward Smith on an out route. Woolen anticipated the pass, secured his second interception and returned it for a touchdown. Both turnovers involved questionable ball placement, allowing Woolen to attack the football without going through the intended receiver.

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Declan Doyle has decided where he will work on game days during the 2026 season. Doyle will call plays from the coaching booth after using the preseason to evaluate whether the field or an elevated position provided the best environment.
"I'm going to go to the booth," Doyle said. "I had the Philly experience up there, and I thought it was really clean."
Doyle called plays from the booth during Baltimore's preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Ravens produced a clean offensive operation in the 24-7 victory, avoiding the communication problems and unnecessary delays that can occur when a new coordinator handles game-day responsibilities for the first time. The preseason was always going to serve as a rehearsal for more than the players. Doyle needed to establish his play-calling rhythm, learn how quickly information would travel through the coaching staff and determine which location offered the best view of the defense.
The booth provides a wider perspective of defensive formations. Doyle can see safety rotations, coverage ******* ing and potential mismatches more clearly than he could from field level. That view should help him identify adjustments and anticipate how opponents are responding to Baltimore's personnel and formations.
The tradeoff is reduced face-to-face communication with Lamar Jackson and the rest of the offense between possessions. Doyle will rely on Baltimore's ******* istant coaches on the sidelines to deliver information and provide feedback while he studies the previous series from above.

Repeating that success could prove even more difficult than achieving it the first time.
ESPN's Bill Barnwell included the Patriots in his annual breakdown of the NFL teams most likely to decline during the 2026 season. That prediction might sound harsh after New England strengthened its roster over the offseason. In reality, it says as much about the extraordinary height of last season's success as it does about any concern surrounding the current Patriots.
New England did not simply sneak into the playoffs during Vrabel's first season. The Patriots won 14 games, captured their first AFC East **** le since 2019 and advanced through three postseason rounds. They defeated the Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans at Gillette Stadium before earning a 10-7 road victory over the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game.

Exploration in the Jurassic formations deep under the Mexican Gulf seabed in the Campeche Bay carries high risks, but the reward in case of a discovery could be enormous, geologists and ******* ysts tell Bloomberg.
Back in 2018, Pemex drilled more than 7,800 meters (25,600 feet) below the sea floor and penetrated the Campeche salt layer in an exploratory well that was declared unproductive. The Mexican oil giant hasn't ventured new exploratory wells in the area since then, but industry experts believe that Pemex may have found something of great geological and/or hydrocarbon-bearing potential, which has prompted it to pursue exploration further.
Pemex hasn't shared publicly any results of its 2018 drilling campaign offshore Campeche, but ******* ysts say there is a reason why the Mexican oil giant hasn't abandoned efforts to find huge resources and turn around years of declining domestic oil production from legacy wells.

When Andrew Rappleyea was deciding whether to stay at Penn State or transfer after last season, he received a message from new Nittany Lions offensive line coach Ryan Clanton.
"Coach Clanton sent me a picture of one of our formations," Rappleyea recalled. "It was 14 personnel (one running back and four tight ends). He said, 'We need you here.' It was pretty funny. They use tight ends a lot. They produce them. They have good ones."
The Nittany Lions have several of them this season, giving them a deep group and perhaps the strongest position on the team.
Ben Brahmer, Gabe Burkle and Cooper Alexander transferred from Iowa State to join Matt Campbell, their coach with the Cyclones. Rappleyea, Finn Furmanek and Brian Kortovich remained at Penn State.
Brahmer, Burkle and Rappleyea will see plenty of time on offense; Alexander and Furmanek will see their share of action.

In the rankings, which project team success from 2027 through 2029, ***** yst Seth Walder offered a high-upside prediction for Pittsburgh's towering third-year tight end, Darnell Washington.
Despite playing behind Pat Freiermuth on the depth chart, Washington's underlying efficiency metrics suggest a massive breakout awaits as his role expands.
"Bold prediction for 2027-29: Tight end Darnell Washington will make the top 10 in Jeremy Fowler's annual survey of coaches and executives on the best players at every position," wrote Walder for ESPN. "He might be the Steelers' No. 2 tight end at the moment, but Washington averaged 1.9 yards per route run last season and was in the 83rd percentile among tight ends in run block win rate. Tight end is a position where players can develop slowly, so he has plenty of time to increase his role."
Standing 6-foot-7 and weighing 264 pounds, the Georgia product was drafted primarily for his formidable blocking ability. However, the data reveals a far more versatile weapon. Averaging 1.9 yards per route run places Washington among efficient pass-catchers, while his 83rd percentile mark in run block win rate demonstrates his elite utility in heavy formations.
Because tight ends traditionally require longer developmental ramps to master both inline blocking and complex route trees, Washington's steady statistical progression bodes well for his future.

There was nothing particularly encouraging about the Philadelphia Eagles' preseason opener, except for the fact that it's... well... the preseason... The long -awaited debut of Sean Mannion's offense was an exercise in patience. Moving the football was a struggle. Penalties repeatedly put the unit behind schedule. Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee both struggled to find any consistent rhythm.
That doesn't mean Sean Mannion's offense is headed for trouble. In fact, every lesson learned in the loss against the Baltimore Ravens may have been exactly what should be expected from an offensive unit that's still learning. No team wants to tip its hand in Week 1, especially an Eagles team that keeps its cards close to the vest. Then, it must be mentioned that many of the best players weren't on the field.
The Eagles finished the game with just 159 total yards and six first downs in a 24-7 loss. They managed only two first downs through their first nine possessions and didn't score until the fourth quarter, when most of the players on the field were unlikely to be part of Philadelphia's Week 1 plans.
That's ugly, but again, it's preseason. The Eagles weren't going to unveil the full version of their new attack in Baltimore. Mannion is installing concepts centered on under-center formations, motion, play-action, and outside-zone principles, but there's little reason to put an entire playbook on film when the games don't count.
Jalen Hurts didn't play. Saquon Barkley didn't play. Neither did Dallas Goedert. Much of the starting offensive line remained on the sideline, and the quarterback competition behind Hurts took center stage instead. That's a difficult environment in which to judge a new offense. Timing matters in any system, and it becomes even more important when players are learning new terminology, route combinations, blocking ****** ignments and reads.

PRINCEVILLE, Ill. (WMBD) -- Princeville went 7-3 last season and made the playoffs last season, however they graduated a lot of talent from last year and return only two starters on each side of the ball.
The defense for the Princes was very stingy and tough to score on as they allowed only 15 points per game. That unit will be led by returning linebackers Coley Palmer and Collin Carruthers. Head coach Jon Carruthers says they will be leaning on their linebackers to lead a young unit.
"The linebacker position is kind of the quarterback of the defense and having two guys with experience," said coach Carruthers. "They're multiple years starters, Collin Carruthers and then Coley Palmer. Having those guys be able to call it formations, strengths, things like that, get people set that that takes. A lot of our coaches played there."
"In our conference I feel like a lot of people do a lot of run a lot less than pass," said Palmer. "So, I think our middle linebackers and really all of our linebacker's kind of contain the run game a lot better than most other teams. So, I think that's why they're really good position for us."
The Princes hit the road in week one to take on Illini West.

Mannion's answer ends any questions about whether a change at offensive coordinator could lead Philadelphia to move away from the play. The Eagles are adjusting their formations, terminology and overall approach, but there is little reason to remove something that has consistently worked.
Philadelphia's success with the Tush Push begins with Hurts' lower-body strength, but the play requires timing, leverage and execution from the entire offensive line. Opponents have tried to replicate it without achieving the same results, while repeated attempts to remove it from the NFL rulebook have failed.

When the Cowboys hired Christian Parker as defensive coordinator, they weren't just seeking a new coach. They wanted someone capable of rebuilding a defense that finished 2025 as one of the NFL's worst units, while also developing a young secondary packed with potential. Just over a week into training camp in Oxnard means it's still early, but many of the first signs have been extremely encouraging.
The biggest takeaway has been how quickly players have embraced Parker's coaching style. Rather than creating a passive practice environment, Parker has encouraged constant competition between the offense and defense. Players have described practices as iron sharpening iron, with the defense feeding off the challenge of facing Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens every day. That competitive atmosphere has noticeably increased the energy level of camp and has created an environment where every rep matters.
One of the first things that stands out about Christian Parker's defense is the importance he places on communication. Every player in the secondary is expected to know not only their own ***** ignment but also how the coverage changes based on motion, formations and offensive adjustments. That has created a defense where players are constantly talking before the snap instead of waiting for the play to unfold.
Parker's experience developing defensive backs is showing through the way Dallas is using its personnel, with safeties and cornerbacks moving into different roles rather than being limited to a single position. Rookie Caleb Downs has been one of the biggest examples of that flexibility, spending time as a deep safety, working closer to the line of scrimmage and lining up in the slot depending on the situation.
The secondary has arguably been the biggest success story of camp so far. After struggling through much of last season, the defensive backfield has looked far more confident and competitive in Oxnard.

The UCLA Bruins football team participated in media day on Wednesday and three of the Bruins' best players were interviewed by Mike Hall on the Big Ten Network.
Among those players was starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava, the junior who transferred to Westwood from Tennessee last summer.
Hall started the interview by asking each player about what feels different at UCLA this season under Bob Chesney compared to a year ago with DeShaun Foster. Hall then questioned Iamaleava about the differences and similarities between each head coach's offensive philosophies, which shifted with the hiring of new offensive coordinator Dean Kennedy.
"Yeah, a little similar. There's going to be different changes with the formations, shifts and motions. I think it's a lot similar to last year, just different words," Iamaleava explained. "I've continued to dive into that playbook and get comfortable with it. It's been fun under coach Kennedy and coach Ches."
After the Bruins scored more than 20 points in only five games last season, the pairing of Chesney and Kennedy has plenty of room to improve the offense entering a new campaign.

After multiple days of sunshine, the New England Patriots were forced to move inside to WIN Waste Innovations Field House and closed practice to the public after downpours plagued the practice field on Monday, Aug. 3.
A notable limited participant was receiver Kyle Williams, who left Saturday's practice with an injury. Williams missed a significant portion of practice on Monday, but did appear for the final four periods.
Before team drills, head coach Mike Vrabel and some of his coaching staff put on pads for an offensive line blocking drill. While the staff was mostly used to simulate where defensive linemen and linebackers would be lined during run formations, Vrabel took one opportunity to show off the skills he learned during his 13-year career.
Running back Jack Westover received the handoff and hit the gap as the drill intended, but out of nowhere, Vrabel came in and "stopped" Westover. Vrabel then pumped his fist and celebrated in front of the offense while the defense cheered him on.
After Vrabel showed off his defensive prowess, the receivers and defensive secondary went against each other in a 1-on-1 drill. It was essentially a draw between the two groups, with each group making a play over the other. The play of the drill was on the first play when receiver A.J. Brown bobbled the ball to himself and made a one-handed grab for a touchdown over cornerback Christian Gonzalez as the two players continue to go against each other this summer.

The Buffalo Bills were fantastic when they used three tight ends last season. In fact, only the Los Angeles Rams were better on offense when using heavy personnel groupings, as the Bills came in second in EPA per play out of 13 personnel at 15.7. They were also exceptional when using two tight ends, and they did so more than any other team in football.
An increase in usage for Buffalo's tight ends means that the team has to carry multiple top-flight options at the position. Or, perhaps it's because the Bills have multiple excellent options at tight end that the team chooses to forgo spread formations, using multiple tight ends instead.
Coming into the 2025 season, the top two names on the tight end depth chart received most of the attention. As the season progressed, however, it became apparent that the third man on that chart was no slouch. PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles' increased use of under-center formations does not mean they are abandoning the run-pass option concepts that have helped Jalen Hurts throughout his career. Offensive coordinator Sean Mannion believes both approaches can remain part of the offense, with their usage determined by matchups, game situations and what opposing defenses present each week.
"I think there's definitely room for both," Mannion said. "A lot of it is just dependent on week by week or situationally."
Philadelphia displayed several under-center play-action looks during the opening week of training camp. Those formations could help create varied rushing angles for Saquon Barkley while giving Hurts opportunities to attack defenses with play action. Operating under center can also make Philadelphia's intentions less obvious. The Eagles can run the football, use conventional play-action or build movement passes from similar formations. That forces linebackers and safeties to process more information after the snap.
Hurts has traditionally done some of his best work from the shotgun, where his ability to read defenders powers Philadelphia's zone-read and RPO packages. Mannion does not view adding under-center concepts as an either-or decision. Instead, the Eagles want enough variety to select the approach that best attacks each opponent. Some defenses may be vulnerable to play-action from under center. Others may struggle to account for Hurts as an additional runner from shotgun formations.
"There's a lot of different things that come up throughout the game from one week to the next, things you're seeing from the defense," Mannion said. "To have all those different elements in your back pocket, I think there's room for many different things."

Declan Doyle wants players coached the way he once hoped to be taught. Doyle explained that his approach has been shaped by experiences accumulated throughout more than a decade in the NFL.
"This is my 11th year getting to coach, and obviously I've had different jobs in that whole process. When I started coaching, I always wanted to be the coach that I wanted to have, and that was one that is a clear communicator, holds you to a high standard, is knowledgeable and is able to help you. That really is what I'm trying to convey every day, that we're in the boat with them. It's not like, 'Hey, me versus you.' It's like me and you together, and we're trying to accomplish what we say we're going to accomplish."

Keri Russell and the executive producers of "Felicity" created cultural panic when Russell cut her hair on screen, a short hair makeover she later regretted. And in recent years, Kaley Cuoco, Katy Perry, and Zoë Kravitz are a few of the celebs who totally rocked short hair transformations. Whether those ladies knew it or not, in the late '80s, an up-and-coming model named Linda Evangelista paved the way for women to take those big risks with their hair — and it almost ruined her career. Evangelista's cut is now part of fashion industry history. In the 2023 Apple TV+ docuseries "The Super Models" (via Us Weekly), Evangelista said that she lost work immediately after stylist Julien d'Ys cut her long brown waves into a pixie at the suggestion of photographer Peter Lindbergh.

"I went to Milano to do the fashion shows where I was booked for 20 shows. As I was doing my fittings, and as they were seeing me, they all started canceling me," Evangelista recalled on the series. She said she only ended up doing four shows that year, but then her luck changed. Her open schedule allowed her to book a job with Vogue Italia to be photographed by Steven Meisel. She made the cover, which led to other Vogue features, and suddenly she was booked and busy. In fact, she said her rate quadrupled as she set a trend, leading women to ask their hairdressers for the short, androgynous cut dubbed "The Linda."

Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Zack Baun has officially moved beyond that conversation. Often, success is a matter of luck or even coincidence. Coaching still matters, and once Baun left the New Orleans Saints and aligned himself with Vic Fangio, everything changed.
Since joining the Eagles, Baun has gone from special teamer to a Super Bowl champion. He's a two-time Pro Bowler, a 2024 First-team All-Pro, and a Butkus Award winner.

Magnolia Oil & Gas has agreed to acquire privately held WildFire Energy in a transaction valued at approximately $4.06 billion, a move that more than doubles its acreage in the Giddings area of South Texas and creates one of the region's largest Eagle Ford and Austin Chalk positions.
The acquisition adds approximately 810,000 net acres to Magnolia's existing holdings, bringing its total Giddings position to more than 1.25 million net acres. The combined portfolio provides exposure to multiple productive formations, including the Austin Chalk, Eagle Ford and Woodbine, while strengthening the company's presence near premium Gulf Coast markets.
Magnolia said the acquired **** ets currently produce around 53,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, with roughly 70% of output consisting of oil. The company expects the transaction to immediately increase cash flow, free cash flow and earnings per share while lowering its corporate reinvestment rate.
The company also expects to generate more than $100 million in annual synergies through operational efficiencies, infrastructure integration and lower corporate costs. Included in the acquisition are a sand mine that supplies most of Magnolia's completion sand needs and more than 500 miles of gas gathering pipelines in Giddings.
Reflecting confidence in the combined business, Magnolia announced a 9% increase in its quarterly dividend to $0.18 per share, payable in the third quarter of 2026, while maintaining its existing share repurchase program.

The company highlighted that QTORIN rapamycin has attained FDA designations for Orphan Drug, Fast Track designations, and Breakthrough Therapy. The company is also speeding up U.S. launch preparation for a possible independent commercial launch in the early half of 2027, subject to approval.
Earlier on June 22, the company revealed that the FDA had provided a rolling review for QTORIN rapamycin's New Drug Application. Palvella Founder and CEO, Wes Kaupinen, highlighted that the company plans to use the Breakthrough Therapy, the benefits of rolling review, and Fast Track designations to facilitate an efficient route toward achieving FDA approval.
