Whether it's a brush fire, a mass shooting, a car chase or the aftermath of a major storm, viewers in Los Angeles are used to getting the news from above.
Television news helicopter coverage has become one of the most important elements of any local newscast, with the high-flying helicopters roaring overhead a common fixture of breaking news scenes.
These images are so ubiquitous, it may have been easy to take them for granted, until Tuesday, when an NBC4 helicopter carrying reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw crashed while covering breaking news in Chatsworth. Both died, along with a bystander on the ground.
The tragedy has prompted soul-searching in the world of TV news helicopter pilots and focused attention on safety issues.

Software stocks, once left in the dust, have bounced back in recent months as high-flying chip stocks take a back seat.
"One of the things that was greatly overstated earlier this year was the death of software," Brian Mulberry, Zacks Investment Management chief market strategist, told Yahoo Finance on Tuesday.
"In order to engage with these AI tools … you need software to customize those tools for your business, " he said.
The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) is up 15% over the past three months and more than 40% higher from its April lows. Among individual movers, Microsoft (MSFT) and Palantir (PLTR) are both up 30%, while Salesforce (CRM) has risen more than 50% since mid-June.
In comparison, the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) is down 17% over the three-month period, according to Yahoo Finance's AlphaSpace chart.

NBC4's helicopter was one of several news aircraft flying over the scene of a deadly bus crash in Chatsworth Tuesday evening at sunset.
It's common for multiple news choppers to arrive at the scene of breaking news, beaming live images for newscasts and streaming.
But around 7 p.m., something went horribly wrong and in a matter of seconds the NBC4 chopper dropped out of the sky, crashing into shipping containers and vehicles outside a warehouse a few blocks away, bursting into flames. Two station journalists, reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw, were killed along with a bystander on the ground.
Federal investigators are now trying to figure out what went wrong. The Times interviewed several experts, who reviewed recordings of the chopper's final moments. They offered insights into the helicopter itself, its movements that afternoon and what is known about how its mechanics work.

GE Aerospace (GE) trades near $318, up 13.4% over the past twelve months. Behind that price sits a commercial services backlog of roughly $170 billion, work on engines already flying. The easy read is that the good news is in the price, and the coming three years just work that backlog off. A three-year scenario on the company's own numbers puts a size on what is left.
Revenue does most of the work. The scenario grows it 17.4% a year for three years, down from the 21.7% pace of the past twelve months, and net margin recovers some of the ground it has lost. Together they lift earnings about 67%.
The constraint is not demand. Management said in July that what lies ahead is much more a supply-side challenge than a demand one. Spare parts delinquencies, shipments held up for want of material, grew 20% sequentially in the second quarter of 2026.
GE Aerospace agreed in September to buy the castings maker Consolidated Precision Products. The deal shows where the bottleneck sits.
Then the multiple takes its cut. The scenario trims the P/E from 36.8x to 32.9x, because a slower revenue pace will not support what the market pays today. On those ******* umptions the stock would be worth about $475 in three years, roughly 50% above today.

Tributes began pouring in Wednesday after a news helicopter crashed in Los Angeles, leaving three people dead.
The crash occurred just before 7 p.m. local time Tuesday in the Chatsworth area of the San Fernando Valley, as the news chopper was covering a road traffic accident.
Angel City Air operated the helicopter, which was providing news coverage for NBC Los Angeles.
The victims aboard the helicopter were identified as Eliana Moreno, a journalist familiar to viewers of the station and its Spanish-language sister station, Telemundo 52, and pilot George Marciniw. The pair began flying together in 2023.
A pedestrian on the ground was also confirmed to have died at the scene, officials said. Authorities identified the third victim as Edy Gutiérrez Mejia, 29.

Hayden Panettiere reportedly took a pill believed to have contained oxycodone laced with fentanyl on the day she died.
In a new report from TMZ published on Monday, September 14, law enforcement sources claimed that the pill is what led to the Scream 4 star's death. However, official toxicology results are still pending.
The sources also told the outlet that Panettiere had a "long time drug dealer" in the Los Angeles area who provided the Nashville alum with illegal prescription drugs. She reportedly purchased the pill that allegedly led to her death, as well as other drugs, the morning before she died.
The DEA in Los Angeles is reportedly investigating Panettiere's relationship with her alleged drug dealer and working to determine whether the pill she took can be traced back to him.
As In Touch previously reported, Panettiere died at the age of 36 on Sunday, August 16. The day prior, she and her on-again off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, were spotted flying out of LAX to South Carolina.

For just the third time in 63 years, Liverpool have failed to win both of their opening home games of a league season - not exactly the flying start new boss Andoni Iraola would have been dreaming of.
After such an encouraging midweek performance against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, full of urgency, Saturday's goalless draw against Fulham was a flat follow-up, especially with the Cottagers lacking in confidence and having conceded seven goals in their first three league games.
The Reds looked physically and mentally tired and, to put it bluntly, like an entirely different team to the one that won against a Diego Simeone side that made it to the Champions League semi-finals last season.
On the first real look at how Iraola's style will cope with two games a week, this was certainly not what the Liverpool head coach, nor the Anfield crowd, would have wanted to see.

Defending champion Lando Norris narrowly beat championship leader Kimi Antonelli to claim pole position for the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix on Saturday.
The McLaren driver topped the timesheets with the best time of 1 minute 31.824 seconds on the new Madrid circuit to take his third pole of the season.
Antonelli was just 0.011 seconds behind, while Max Verstappen of Red Bull completed the top three, 0.140 seconds off the pace.
Lewis Hamilton thought he would recover from a crash in the final practice session in style as he had provisional pole with the fastest time after the first flying laps.
But the seven-time champion was beaten by Antonelli, who then lost the top position to Norris.

Expect to see a lot more of Williams this year."
Ducks Wire did not like what kick returner Evan Stewart brought to the table:
"As a wide receiver, Evan Stewart was great on Saturday, with eight catches for 72 yards. As a punt returner, though, Stewart left a bit to be desired. He had a trio of mistakes: a fair catch at the 3-yard line and two ****** ed punts, one of which was recovered by Boise State. In the end, Oregon was still able to get the win, and Lanning expressed support of Stewart after the game, but it's clear that this operation needs to clean up going forward for the Ducks, or we may see someone else back there in the return game."

LOS ANGELES – Angel City Football Club fought hard to overcome a two-goal deficit against the Denver Summit, ending the night in a 3-3 draw at BMO Stadium on Friday.
Angel City's Maiara Niehues opened scoring one minute before halftime, and goals on both sides did not stop coming. The action-packed second half saw five goals scored: two by Angel City and three by the visiting Denver Summit. Down by two goals, Angel City's offense was on a mission.
"Going down 3-1 at home was not acceptable," Angel City forward Sveindís Jónsdóttir said. "We came together and spoke and said we were not done. We knew we wanted to score more goals. We've got some game-changers on, and they helped us change the game."
In the 44th minute, Sarah Gorden intercepted the ball and immediately played it to Niehues, who sent it flying into the back of the net for a goal. It was Niehues' eighth goal of the season.

EASTON -- The Oliver Ames High football team's defense is off to a flying start.
The Tigers allowed a one-play touchdown drive in the fourth quarter but otherwise clamped down on Archbishop Williams to post a 14-6 season-opening win on Thursday, Sept. 10.
"We got the defense together," said senior cornerback/running back Desahn Walker. "We kept on putting our foot on the (gas) pedal and got it done."
Walker got it done on both sides of the ball as he ripped off a 60-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to extend the Tigers' lead to 14-0 with 5:59 remaining.
That score gave OA the cushion it needed to withstand its one defensive wobble. On the ensuing play from scrimmage, Archbishop Williams quarterback Thomas Prifti went up top and hit Michael Boyle with a 66-yard TD bomb down the left sideline just 19 seconds after Walker's TD.

It really just feels like each series the Atlanta Braves have been in lately has been like them leaving a snake pit for a lion's den only to realize that they've stepped into a piranha's pond and escaped that just to find out that the dry land was quicksand. "I don't know how much more battle-tested we need to be," quipped Walt Weiss when he was asked by the media during Tuesday's pregame press conference about the tough schedule that the Braves have been dealing with as of late — and still have to navigate going forward.
Indeed, one of the takeaways from this patch is that the Braves will have faced some of the toughest teams that baseball currently has to offer once they eventually reach the Postseason and they should be more-than-ready to handle whatever's in front of them. With that being said, the Braves had to deal with another serious test in the form of the Tampa Bay Rays and once the smoke cleared, it was less about acing the test and more like simply doing enough to pass the test. Did Atlanta manage that? Let's get into it.
This one was competitive for two innings, as the Braves matched Junior Caminero's two-out dinger off of AJ Smith-Shawver in the first inning with a run of their own in the bottom half of that frame. The deadlock didn't last long at all, as the Rays made the third inning a long one for Smith-Shawver. AJSS was one out away from potentially putting two outs on the board against the Rays in that inning. Instead, Liam Hicks sent one flying into the Georgia night sky for a two-run shot. Smith-Shawver was one out away from keeping it at 3-1 before Victor Mesa Jr. hit a bouncer that eluded the glove of Ozzie Albies and dribbled into the infield for an RBI single that made it 4-1.
AJ Smith-Shawver was only able to make it through 3.1 innings with those four runs allowed, but credit is due to Brent Suter for going 3.2 innings while only giving up a single run while he was out there. Elieser Hernández wasn't as fortunate, as he surrendered two runs across his two innings of work and then got the DFA treatment once the next morning rolled around. It really felt like the Rays were either ****** ing and dunking or hitting moonshots, there was no in-between in this one.
Meanwhile, a nasty trend for the Braves was emerging while they were on the mound. It's not particularly shocking that Freddy Peralta ended up going six innings with just one run allowed since he'd done pretty well in two previous starts against Atlanta with the Mets. It wasn't shocking either to see the Rays bullpen clamp down on the Braves they did on Tuesday, either. What was shocking is that the Braves came out of this game with 11 batted ****** that were at least 95-mph that ended up turning into outs. Folks, that's tough!

CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) — A flight that was scheduled to carry Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from Moldova to Norway earlier this week was delayed when authorities closed Moldova's airspace because of a drone incursion, a government spokesperson said.
Moldovan police said a Russian drone crashed on Tuesday in a sunflower field on the outskirts of a village in the district of Riscani, which caused four fires to break out but no injuries.
Government spokesperson Dumitru Ciorici said on Wednesday that Moldova had closed its airspace Tuesday afternoon to protect aircraft flying over the country at the time. The closure delayed three departures, including the flight carrying Zelenskyy.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told broadcaster NRK that Zelenskyy's plane "was nearly hit by a drone as it took off from Moldova" on its way to Oslo for King Harald V's funeral. Zelenskyy arrived in Oslo on Tuesday and met Støre to discuss potential support for Ukraine's air defenses before attending the king's funeral on Wednesday.
Moldovan authorities confirmed the drone came down and exploded 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Chisinau International Airport. The airspace restrictions were lifted and Zelenskyy's plane took off later than scheduled.

Lazio have officially announced their signing of Portuguese centre-back Diogo Leite on a free transfer following their flying start to the 2026-27 Serie A season, which sees them joint top of the pack after three matches.
The Biancocelesti have confirmed that Leite has joined the club on a free transfer following the expiry of his Union Berlin contract earlier this summer, and that he has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with an option to extend for a further 12 months at the Stadio Olimpico.

There's been plenty of chatter about the 2026-27 Minnesota Wild. The main offseason rabble has been whether or not Quinn Hughes will sign an extension. Minnesota general manager Bill Guerin was able to weaponize the salary cap **** e since the buyouts of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter were greatly reduced. Guerin has been taking care of players like Brock Faber and Kirill Kaprizov.
However, the Hughes question hangs over the franchise's head like a cloud. The Wild rolled the dice to get the high-flying defender from the Vancouver Canucks. However, it would be a disaster if the Olympic Gold Medal winner doesn't stay beyond this season. The Wild have only made the Western Conference Final once in the franchise's history. Minnesota knows the pressure is on to at least get back there.
Guerin fulfulled his promise of making the team into a Stanley Cup contender. He managed to give Kaprizov the deal that would keep the dynamic forward in the fold. However, getting Hughes proved to be a masterstroke. It cemented the Wild as a contender despite being in one of the toughest divisions in hockey.
Minnesota looked the part of a contender by finishing 10th in scoring, fourth in defence, and seventh in points. The Wild even broke some of their bad postseason luck by getting past the Dallas Stars. However, the same old Wild came back in the second round in a loss to the Colorado Avalanche. The Wild were exposed as not having as much depth as the Avs and not having enough team speed. Minnesota has made plenty of progress, but the team still has a long way to go.

CNBC reported that American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ:AAL) announced seven new international routes for its summer 2027 schedule, most flown on its Airbus A321XLR.
New destinations include Philadelphia to Porto and Vienna and JFK to Amsterdam and Nice, alongside a returning Reykjavik route and Charlotte-Barcelona and Chicago-Tokyo Narita service on widebody jets. American's SVP of network and schedule planning, Brian Znotins, said the XLR "really opens up the menu for all these destinations that are just too small for a widebody." The announcement came the same week that rival United Airlines, which flies more international routes than any other U.S. carrier, unveiled its own 2027 international additions. American has said its flying is split roughly 80% domestic and 20% international.
The XLR gives American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ:AAL) a more flexible way to expand its international network. The smaller, long-range aircraft lets American serve thinner transatlantic markets without committing the capacity of a larger widebody jet. That flexibility opens opportunities such as Philadelphia-Vienna and Philadelphia-Porto and gives American another way to grow international revenue.
The XLR's premium-heavy configuration also gives American more room to target higher-value travelers. American designed the aircraft's new interior with more premium seating than its other aircraft, allowing the airline to offer a stronger premium product on long-haul routes. If American can fill those seats at attractive fares, the aircraft could improve the economics of its international expansion.
American also gains a competitive advantage on Philadelphia-Vienna. The airline said it will become the only U.S. carrier offering nonstop service between the two cities. That position gives American a differentiated product on the route and could help it capture travelers who value nonstop service.

Zan Vipotnik has been backed to return to form for Swansea City – even though he is still not guaranteed to return to the starting line-up.
Swansea are flying in the Championship, leading the table after six games, and they take their unbeaten start to Southampton on Tuesday (19:45 BST).

Cowboys Flying won the $3 million All American Futurity at The Downs at Albuquerque, remaining unbeaten and delivering the biggest victory of his career despite being in trainer Marco Chavez-Gutierrez's barn for only about three weeks.
The heavily backed Cowboys Flying paid $2.60 to win, $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show in the race for 2-year-olds.

The AV-8B Harrier, the Marine Corps' short take-off and vertical-landing fighter, saw its pilots carefully manage three different controls — one to control direction, an engine throttle, and a nozzle lever that directed engine thrust, allowing the aircraft to hover.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz posted his most convincing win so far, downing Tommy Paul in straight sets Sunday to reach the US Open quarter-finals, where two-time women's champion Aryna Sabalenka will meet Wimbledon winner Linda Noskova.
Second-seeded Alcaraz, playing his first tournament since he was sidelined by a right wrist injury in April, looked closer to his brilliant best in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Paul.
The 20th-seeded American posted the sternest test yet for Alcaraz, and he passed it with flying colors.
"I played my game," said Alcaraz, who unleashed 33 winners as he moved fluidly around the court in the two-hour 20-minute match.
"I tried to play my style," he said. "Tommy is such a talented player. His shots are pretty dangerous and sometimes it's really difficult to control the ball when it comes to you.

Archer is one of the frontrunners in the eVTOL market. It is currently working on certifying its flagship aircraft, Midnight, which could potentially taxi passengers within urban hubs and to and from airports.

The Hope College football team proved consistency can be a weapon in its season opener.
The No. 19 Flying Dutchmen scored a touchdown in each quarter and got key defensive stops in a 28-14 win over Denison (Ohio) on the road Saturday, Sept. 5.
Freshman running back Brody Schuitemen (Jenison) rushed for two touchdowns, including a game-clinching 46-yard scamper on fourth down with 4:13 remaining in the game.
Senior wide receiver Kaden DeHorn (Caledonia) and sophomore running back Trey Goike (Orchard Lake St. Mary's Prep) also scored with DeHorn setting career-highs with 151 yards receiving and six receptions.
Hope finished with 410 yards of total offense. Quarterback Alex Thole completed 16 of 24 passes for 263 yards; he was intercepted once.
