Well this is a peculiar first move for trade deadline season. Jake Rogers, the longest tenured Detroit Tigers player, has been designated for ***** ignment. Eduardo Valencia was recalled on Sunday and will be taking over the backup catcher duties. Rogers' roster spot will go to Javier Báez, who returns from a three-month absence after suffering a high ankle sprain at the end of April.
The 31-year-old Rogers made his major league debut with the Tigers back on July 30, 2019 after coming to the Tigers in the trade that sent Justin Verlander to the Houston Astros in August of 2017. He finally became the Tigers primary catcher in 2021 before tearing his UCL and requiring reconstruction surgery that cost him all of the 2022 season. In 2023 and 2024 Rogers put together good seasons based around his defensive ability, plate discipline, and the occasional burst of home run power. He was worth 4.7 fWAR across those two years, but since that point his offensive contributions collapsed as Dillon Dingler took over the everyday catching role. This season, Rogers' defense finally showed real signs of cracking as well. He's hitting .161/.266/.301 for a 60 wRC+ which ranks him 48th out of 59 catchers with 100 plate appearances or more this season.
Despite his struggles, two part-time White Sox catchers, and numerous others, are even worse offensive players than Rogers. It won't be a surprise if he gets claimed, but it's too bad no one would flip a lottery ticket prospect to acquire him. The problem is that Rogers defensive numbers have declined this year and he's finally grading out a little below average as a defender. Whether that's partly the result of lack of playing time is hard to say, but hopefully he'll be claimed somewhere. If he clears waivers and is outrighted the Tigers will still be on the hook for the rest of his $3.05M salary for 2026.
Valencia is far and away a better hitter than Rogers, so that should provide a little support to the offense. On the other hand, Valencia isn't that good behind the plate, particularly in terms of holding opponents' running game in check. Still with Rogers defensive numbers in decline, perhaps Valencia won't do worse.
Getting Báez back could be pretty helpful to the Tigers although it's just funny to look at Báez as a way to trim strikeouts in the lineup by taking over some of the workload from James Outman. It will be interesting to see how he's deployed. With Kerry Carpenter out with a foot injury, the outfield needs help. It needed help anyway. We'll see if Báez is back to full speed and can get back to playing a solid enough center field. If he's back to 100 percent, that also gives the Tigers options, with Báez getting some time at shortstop and around the infield to get another right-handed bat into the lineup. Either way, it's good to have Javy Báez back, and hopefully further support for the outfield isn't too far away as Max Clark will be available to be called up without spoiling his 2027 rookie eligibi

The final few weeks of the summer transfer window will be busy for Real Madrid, with signings and exits expected. In terms of incomings, Yan Diomande and Rodri are wanted, while there are several first team players that have been earmarked as candidates to leave before the end of next month.
Raul Asencio, Eduardo Camavinga and Franco Mastantuono (loan) are players that Real Madrid want to move on, while they could also be convinced to sell Gonzalo Garcia amid strong interest from Alvaro Arbeloa's Fulham. The La Fabrica graduate would bring in much-needed funds in the event that Diomande and Rodri are signed, although head coach Jose Mourinho would prefer him to remain at the Bernabeu.
Mourinho considers Gonzalo to be a differential option in attack. He's the closest thing that Real Madrid have to a target forward, and if the decision is eventually made for him to stay, it could mean that a different attacking player departs in his place.
That player could be Endrick. Despite reports earlier in the summer that Mourinho wanted to keep the Brazil international in his squad for the 2026-27 season, Marca have reported that Real Madrid are now considering whether to loan him out again.
Real Madrid see Endrick as one of their biggest stars for the future, but right now, his chances of regular playing time look slim – especially if Diomande joins, as expected. There are fears that his development will be stunted if he does not feature prominently, which is why club bosses are considering whether to send him on loan for the second successive transfer window.

Model distillation is a widely used AI training technique in which developers use the outputs of a more capable model to train or improve another system. U.S. officials say they distinguish between legitimate distillation and large-scale extraction that amounts to intellectual property theft.

Madridistas got their first look at Jose Mourinho 2.0's Real Madrid as the side took on Primera RFEF opponents AD Alcorcón at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano on Friday evening, with Dani Yáñez scoring the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.
The first 20 minutes of action were open for journalists and viewers on Real Madrid TV, with a series of substitutions meaning that this game was entirely focused on building fitness for those who weren't involved in this summer's World Cup.
Here, we run through some of the takeaways from the short sighting of action.
The line-up which started this game featured Andriy Lunin in goal, a strong defensive unit of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, Raúl Asencio and Álvaro Carreras, but much weaker midfield and attacking depth where the trios were formed by Thiago Cestero, Eduardo Camavinga and Arda Güler and in attack by Franco Mastantuono, Gonzalo García and Gabri Valero. The club reported that the XI on the field at the time of the final whistle were all players from Castilla and the club's youth teams.
While the available first team players were always likely to have a strong influence on how Jose Mourinho set his team up here, it was intriguing to see that Real Madrid began pre-season with a 4-3-3 shape. The system was what worked so well in Mourinho's previous stint at the club, although he operated more regularly with a 4-2-3-1 with Benfica last season. At times, this shape did shift to look like a 4-2-3-1, with Güler stepping forward ahead of Cestero and Camavinga, and showing some of the tactical versatility that could be a point to watch in pre-season.

The Detroit Tigers have released a veteran catcher.
The Tigers released nine-year veteran Tomás Nido from Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, July 21. In his place, the Tigers signed veteran catcher Carlos Pérez to a minor-league deal on Wednesday, July 22, ******* igning him to Toledo.
Nido, who made his MLB debut with the New York Mets in 2017, originally signed a contract with the Tigers on Sept. 17, 2024. Nido appeared in 10 games for the Tigers in 2025, putting up a .704 OPS in 37 plate appearances in April and May.

Throughout the Red Sox 15 game winning streak, they leaned heavily on spectacular starting pitching. Unfortunately, they didn’t get that tonight.
Eduardo Rivera was given the opening role for the third time over the course of the winning streak, and this time, the well finally ran dry. He gave up four runs before the national anthem was over and left the mound with over 40 pitches thrown while only recording two outs. He had zero fastball command, which the Orioles quickly figured out, and then sat on his slider to deliver the knockout punch.
Sadly, that’s pretty much the story of game. From there, Kyle Bradish kept the the Sox offense off balance, and there was never a real rally despite the lineup putting the ball in play most of the night.
The bigger story now is the conclusion of the winning streak and what it’s done for the season. In short, its ensured there’s going to be meaning baseball here for August and September (and hopefully October too, but they still have to earn that). It’s also going to remembered as the signature run of this team. They went from dead in the water and other teams circling the ballpark like buzzards waiting to see what they could pick from the carcass at the trade deadline, to in possession of Wild Card spot. Incredible stuff!
Many fans gave the team a standing ovation at the end of the game, and even though their performance tonight squashed what could have been an all time crazy atmosphere, the group that ensured there’s going to be many more crazy atmospheres for the rest of the summer deserved it.

BOSTON — There are few wins the Baltimore Orioles needed more than the one they secured in Game 2 of their doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.
A loss would’ve dropped them to five games back of Boston for the third wild-card spot in the American League. Instead, they jumped out to an early lead and let Kyle Bradish do the rest. Baltimore (50-53) cruised to a 5-1 win that ended the Red Sox’s historic 15-game winning streak and ensured it would leave Boston a manageable three games out of a playoff spot with the trade deadline 12 days away.
The Orioles, having lost 6-3 in Game 1 of the doubleheader, put up four runs on Red Sox opener Eduardo Rivera in the first inning. They reached base five times in the frame, including a two-run single by Dylan Beavers and an RBI double by Johnathan Rodríguez for his first hit as an Oriole, chasing Rivera from the game before he could record a third out.
It was all Bradish would need. Making his first start since signing a five-year, $90 million extension with the Orioles on Saturday, the right-hander kept the red-hot Boston lineup at bay with six innings of one-run baseball. Bradish allowed just four hits and a walk with four strikeouts, generating all nine of his whiffs with his curveball (five) and slider (four).
The Red Sox’s only run against him came in the fourth, when first baseman Willson Contreras doubled with two outs and scored on a single by designated hitter Masataka Yoshida. Bradish didn’t allow another runner to advance past first base the rest of the way.

The Orioles jumped on Boston’s starter Eduardo Rivera early and used that early offensive explosion to propel them to victory. After Taylor Ward barely missed a leadoff double into the right field corner, Pete Alonso started the rally with a ground rule double over the low wall in right. Gunnar Henderson then worked a four-pitch walk to bring former Red Sox Tyler O’Neill to the plate. TON hit a hard grounder to third, but Caleb Durbin’s throw to second was bobbled by Anthony Seigler, leaving everyone safe and the bases loaded.
After Christian Encarnacion-Strand struck out, Dylan Beavers stepped into the box looking to make sure the early opportunity wouldn’t go to waste. Rivera’s first-pitched slider bounced well in front of home plate, skipping past catcher Carlos Narváez and allowing Alonso to score from first.
Rivera went back to slider 2-2, but the breaking ball caught too much of the plate, and Beavers flipped it into center field for a two-run single. Johnathan Rodríguez then capped off the rally, lining a ball just over the head of Jaren Durran in left and off the Green Monster. The double scored Beavers from first, gave Baltimore a 4-0 lead and chased Rivera after just 41 pitches and two outs.
The early four-run lead was more than enough for Kyle Bradish, as he continued his recent run of good form. The newly minted $90M man, in his first start since his extension, breezed through the 1st inning on nine pitches. He got Seigler to ground out to second on two pitches, got Ceddane Rafaela to fly out to right on three pitches and punctuated the inning with a punch out of Wilyer Abreu.
The Red Sox made Bradish work a little harder in the 2nd, making him throw nine pitches to get the first two outs before getting their first base runner via a Durbin walk. Duran then sent his own hard liner to left, but it was hit right at Ward to end the inning.

The first two games in Boston have been a kick in the teeth for an Orioles team (and fanbase) that came into Beantown riding high. A seven-game win streak and a spot two games back of a Wild Card berth has turned into a two-game losing streak and a four-game gap between the O’s and the playoffs.
In Game 3 of the series and Game 2 of today’s doubleheader, the Orioles will look to finish the job after coming up just short in Monday’s series opener and today’s Game 1. Monday felt as much like a playoff game as any Orioles game since 2024, with the O’s and Sawx trading leads back-and-forth and Tyler O’Neill coming inches away from tying the game in the top of the 9th. Today’s earlier loss was once where the O’s dug themselves an early hole and, despite outhitting the Red Sox 11-9, the Baltimore bats couldn’t complete a comeback against the Boston bullpen.
Tonight’s matchup marks not only the chance to salvage an important game against a division/playoff spot rival, but the first start for Kyle Bradish since signing his record extension. The $90M man faced Boston once previously this season, finishing with a line of 5 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 4 BB and 3 Ks in a 5-3 loss to the Red Sox in Camden Yards.

BOSTON — As the Red Sox try to match a franchise record by extending their winning streak to 15 victories on Tuesday, they’ll welcome one of their All-Stars back to the mound after a brief injured list stint.
Lefty Ranger Suarez will be activated from the IL to pitch Tuesday against the Orioles, interim manager Chad Tracy said after a 6-5 victory in which Caleb Durbin was the hero. The corresponding roster move is unknown. Suarez came out of a pregame workout — which included playing catch and doing some fielding drills on the mound — well enough to be activated.
Suarez last pitched July 5 in Anaheim, when he left after 2 ⅔ innings of a 7-5 Red Sox win with left adductor tightness. He tried to complete his between-starts work in hopes of feeling good enough to make his next start but three days later was placed on the IL. Because of the All-Star break, Suarez’s 15-day injured list stint meant he missed just one start, a game in which Eduardo Rivera started and the Red Sox beat the Mets on July 11.

Well, we wondered if anyone would be interested after a disastrous first half, and it turns out the Boston Red Sox came calling. The Detroit Tigers have traded pinch-hitting, lefty mashing specialist Jahmai Jones to the Red Sox in exchange for a player to be named later.
Getting anything at all back for Jones is fine, as the Tigers just could no longer float Jones on the active roster considering his brutal performance in the first half of the season. Jones slashed an abysmal .137/.219/.221 with a 33.3 percent strikeout rate, two home runs, and a 27 wRC+, putting him over 70 percent worse than league average.
That came of the heels of a 2025 season where he slashed. 287/.387/.550 with seven homers in 150 plate appearances and a 159 wRC+. Nearly all of these at-bats came against left-handed pitching, but even in such a specified role, Jones couldn’t repeat his 2025 run. Teams started spinning in more breaking stuff while keeping fourseam fastballs out of his sweet spot and he just could not adjust with any success. After seeing 35.1 percent fourseam fastballs in 2025, he saw just 23.1 percent of them this season, and was unable to lay off the breaking stuff well enough to get into favorable counts where pitchers might have to challenge him.
Jones got plenty of leash to try and figure it out in May and early June after a rough April, but things just got worse and his playing time quickly dried up. His plate appearances went from 37 in April and 41 in May to just 25 in June.
The emergence of Ben Malgeri as at least a decently competent hitter who, unlike Jones, is a pretty solid outfielder, cut into his playing time, and the brief hand injury to Dillon Dingler gave 1B/C Eduardo Valencia a shot as well. It’s too early to hope for too much from either, but Valencia makes for at least as good an option as Jones even in the exceedingly specific role of pitch-hitting against left-handers. He also provides more defensive utility despite being mediocre behind the plate and at first base.

However, his production fell hard in 2026, with his .440 OPS the fourth-worst in MLB this season among players with at least 100 plate appearances.
Jones made his MLB debut with the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 31, 2020, and also saw time with the Baltimore Orioles, Milwaukee Brewers and New York Yankees before finding himself in Detroit. He had his breakout season for the Tigers in 2025, recording career highs in home runs (7), RBIs (23), hits (37) and OPS (.937). However, he has followed his most productive season with his least productive, as Jones has been worth minus-1.2 fWAR over 57 games, third worst in MLB.

Los Blancos, for those not aware, got their preparations for the new campaign up and running earlier today.
With the José Mourinho era now in full effect in Spain's capital, the club's senior players not called upon for international duty at the World Cup were summoned to Valdebebas for pre-season training.
Alongside the likes of Dean Huijsen, Eduardo Camavinga and Trent Alexander-Arnold, though, were a host of academy talents, too.
Short on numbers for the session, Mourinho and his staff drafted in some of the most highly-regarded youngsters currently making their way through La Fábrica.

After writing about his moment more generally Friday, I’m writing about Eduardo Valencia again because he’s now hit two home runs amidst a fantastic start to his time in the big leagues.
Valencia, with a solo home run in the middle of Detroit’s loss on Saturday, now has a hit, run and RBI in each of his first three games in MLB.
On Thursday, Valencia had a glorious debut, mashing a home run in his first MLB at-bat and then giving an emotional interview. On Friday, he came through with a clutch RBI single to start a rally that propelled Detroit to a lopsided win. And while his homer on Saturday didn’t do much in the grand scheme for Detroit, it raises a bigger question about the offensive boost Valencia can provide.
The problem is he plays catcher primarily, where All-Star Dillon Dingler has the everyday job locked down. But significant DH reps could be in order if Valencia keeps hitting like this.

Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Christopher Sánchez navigated through a hot Tigers lineup, leading the way in a 4-2 Tigers loss on Saturday, July 11, at Comerica Park. The Tigers (44-51) had won six straight games and nine of 10 entering Saturday.
Detroit's only big swing came from rookie catcher Eduardo Valencia, who hit his second home run in the first three games of his major league career with an opposite-field shot off Sánchez. But the rest of the offense had few answers for the National League All-Star.

Philadelphia scored four runs (three earned) off Detroit starter Casey Mize, providing more than enough breathing room for their left-handed ace.

Casey Mize didn’t have his best outing, and the opposing pitcher was a tough test in this one. Cristopher Sanchez won that contest, and while the Tigers actually swung the bats reasonably well, they fumbled a few opportunities and the Phillies won 4-2 to even the series at a game apiece.
This was going to be a tough matchup no matter what as Casey Mize squared off against ace lefty Cristopher Sanchez. The Tigers did have some good news pre-game as Dillon Dingler was cleared to DH in this one. Eduardo Valencia was set to make his debut behind the plate as well.
Things started off auspiciously as Mize walked leadoff man Trea Turner, popped up Kyle Schwarber, and then allowed a double down the right field line from Bryce Harper. Mize dug in and got Brandon Marsh to ground out, and Alec Bohm popped out to Hao-Yu Lee at second. When Mize struggles through the first but escapes, typically things go well the rest of the way.
Matt Vierling immediately welcomed Sanchez to Comerica Park with a sharp single to center field, but then he was picked off by an outstanding move to first from the lefty. Kevin McGonigle flew out and Dillon Dingler struck out, and you hate to squander any chance against one of the top pitchers in the game this season.
Mize seemed to work well with Valencia, and while the latter’s arm strength and accuracy remain in some doubt, he looked pretty solid behind the plate. Mize whiffed Bryson Stott on a slurve and Gabriel Rincones Jr. on a splitter in the second.

-- Facing rookie pitcher Eduardo Rivera, who was making his first career start and just second career appearance in the majors – his first coming on April 22 against the Yankees, the Mets’ offense was befuddled all day.
Against Rivera, recalled from Triple-A before the game to start in place of the injured Ranger Suarez, New York mustered one hit during the lefty’s 3.2 innings. The brilliant Boston pitching didn’t stop there as four Red Sox relievers combined to pitch 5.1 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits.
-- The Mets had chances to score, though, mostly thanks to seven walks on the day. In the second, Carson Benge led off with a walk and stole second base but was left stranded. New York loaded the bases in the seventh following two walks sandwiched in between a single, but A.J. Ewing struck out looking to end the threat. An inning later, Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor had back-to-back walks but the Mets couldn’t score after a flyout and a double play.
-- Francisco Alvarez had two of New York’s three hits on the day, one of them an infield single in the fifth. Meanwhile, Brett Baty’s 10-game hitting streak came to an end after an 0-for-3 day, although he reached base safely with a walk.

NEW YORK (AP) — Andrew Monasterio and Masataka Yoshida hit two-run homers as the surging Boston Red Sox played after a night of normal rest and extended their winning streak to eight games with a 4-0 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday.
Boston is on its longest winning streak since taking 10 in a row from July 4-13 last year. The Red Sox have won 13 of 15 and 16 of 21.
The Red Sox arrived late for Friday's series opener after flight trouble stranded them in Chicago for nearly 24 hours. Boston poked fun at the ordeal by sporting white T-shirts that read “Show and Go Airlines, See You at 4:15."
Following a leadoff walk to Caleb Durbin in the fourth, Monasterio gave put the Red Sox ahead by hitting a fastball from Freddy Peralta (5-8) into the left-field seats. Durbin singled off Tobias Myers starting the righth and Yoshida lifted a 1-0 cutter into the right-field seats.
Eduardo Rivera started with 3 1/3 hitless innings in his first big league start, allowing Jorge Polanco's single on his final pitch.

Aaron Nola was serviceable again but Tim Mayza had one of the worst innings of his nine-year big league career as the Philadelphia Phillies (52-43) unraveled late in a 10-2 drubbing at the hands of the Detroit Tigers (44-50).
Derek Hill led off the third inning with his seventh home run of the year for the game's first run against Tigers' starter, Jack Flaherty.
Delco legend and Rookie of the Year hopeful, Kevin McGonigle, got the Tigers on the board and gave them the lead with a two-run homer off Nola in the bottom of the third to make it 2-1.
An Alec Bohm hit-by-pitch and a pair of walks issued to Bryce Harper and Bryson Stott loaded the bases for Hill, who singled home Harper to bring the score level.
Nola left after five innings and 84 pitches, striking out eight and gave way to Mayza for the sixth. Riley Greene and Matt Vierling walked to set the table for Eduardo Valencia who singled home Greene to retake the lead. Next Zach McKinstry dragged a bunt on the first base side that Mayza hesitated on, eventually throwing to first too late to get McKinstry and allowing Vierling to score from third. One pitch later, James Outman tripled to the gap in right-center to score both runners and extend the lead to four. Three pitches after that, Mayza balked home Outman to complete the damage. The five runs allowed tied Mayza's career high, which he previously surrendered to the Yankees on June 28, 2024 without recording an out.
