Less-than-truckload carrier Old Dominion Freight Line saw yield growth accelerate in August, but tonnage remained slightly negative, according to a Thursday update.
The Thomasville, North Carolina-based company's daily revenue increased 12.4% year over year in August, an improvement from the 8.2% y/y growth rate logged in July. However, diesel fuel prices increased 46% y/y in August compared with a 31% y/y increase in July. (Fuel was up 10% sequentially in August.)
Less-than-truckload fuel surcharge programs include a step function as diesel prices rise, typically resulting in better margins.
Old Dominion's (NASDAQ: ODFL) yield growth accelerated from July, both with and without fuel surcharges. August revenue per hundredweight (yield) was likely 13% higher y/y with fuel surcharges, and roughly 5.5% higher excluding fuel. The July growth rates were 9.3% and 4.2%, respectively. (Growth rates for the two months combined were 11.3% and 4.8%, respectively.) Higher shipment weights were a modest drag on the yield metrics in both months.
"Old Dominion produced solid revenue growth for July and August, with underlying demand trends remaining relatively consistent as the quarter has progressed," said Marty Freeman, president and CEO, in a news release. "In addition, the strength and consistency of our industry-leading service continue to support the ongoing improvement in our LTL revenue per hundredweight."

Weitz Investment Management, an investment management firm, released its second-quarter Q2 2026 investor letter for the "Large Cap Equity Fund". A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The Large Cap Equity Fund's Institutional Class posted a return of 7.03% in Q2, trailing the 15.49% return of the Bloomberg U.S. 1000 Index. This disparity arose as equity markets surged amid economic resilience and easing Middle East tensions, while AI-related stock performance soared due to heightened investor interest in "AI bottleneck" beneficiaries, primarily semiconductor firms. Major positions in "hyperscaler" cloud providers yielded mixed results. Risk-on factors like momentum and growth significantly outpaced defensive factors. Despite the current volatility, the Fund maintains its philosophy of investing in quality companies at undervalued prices, believing this strategy will yield improved returns over time. The portfolio held ownership in 30 companies, with the top 10 comprising over half of the portfolio. The price-to-value ratio is in the upper-70s, indicating strong return potential. Additionally, reviewing the Fund's top five holdings could help identify its best picks for 2026.

We respect and admire the company's management, culture, and methodical approach to building business value in the competitive trucking industry. While positive developments have been stacking up on several fronts, we think the stock price already reflects a strong volume recovery, robust pricing, and plenty of operating ratio improvement. We would gladly own the stock again at the right price."

Shares in Old Dominion Freight Line (NASDAQ: ODFL) declined by 11.9% last week after a downgrade from a Citi ****** yst. Even though the price rose to $228 from $225, the ****** yst downgraded the stock to sell from neutral.
The freight company is known for being a high-quality operator in the niche less-than-truckload (LTL) market in the U.S. The LTL market involves moving shipments that are too large for package delivery companies, such as UPS and FedEx, but too small to fill a trailer. It's a relatively complex operation as its trailers are often filled with shipments for multiple customers, implying sophisticated logistics and multiple network terminals.

That said, it's still a market whose end demand fluctuates with freight growth. The good news is there are signs that the market is set to turn up in 2026. As previously discussed, leading industry freight data has already turned positive month over month and is likely to deliver year-over-year growth in due course.
The issue, at least from the stock's perspective, is that much of the good news appears to be already priced into the sector, with Old Dominion's stock still up 41% so far this year. As such, the ****** yst's call appears to reflect a valuation matter rather than any view on market direction, not least because shipment data and manufacturing sentiment indices continue to show improvement.

Bell Global Equities Fund, managed by Bell ******* et Management, released its latest investor update, available for download. March saw heightened volatility due to the Middle East conflict, with the MSCI World ex Australia Index falling 2.5% and the Bell Global Equities Fund (Wholesale class) declining 3.1%. The portfolio's underweight in Energy was the primary headwind to relative performance, compounded by poor stock selection in Communication Services, Health, and Energy. A tentative ceasefire in early April has helped stabilize sentiment and reverse some March declines. Future market trends depend on the ceasefire's durability and how ongoing energy supply disruptions affect inflation and growth through 2026. In addition, the ongoing AI disruption narrative is significantly influencing market behavior, causing indiscriminate selling across various sectors. The recent weakness appears to be sentiment-driven rather than fundamental deterioration, thus creating opportunities. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.

While we continue to see good scope for strong earnings growth in the coming years as earnings rebound from depressed levels, a strong rally in the share price and material valuation re-rating have largely priced this in. With the potential for macro disruptions related to the conflict in Iran, we felt the risk-reward profile was starting to skew to the downside and therefore exited the position."
