Roster cuts are beginning to fly left and right, but Pittsburgh Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger believes one underrated running back deserves to make the 53-man squad.
On a new episode of Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, Lew Nichols earned massive praise for his high level of play this past month, with Big Ben arguing that he should make a 53-man roster, whether it's with Pittsburgh or elsewhere.
"Nichols ran awesome last night," Roethlisberger said. "I think he, maybe, like said 'Hey hey, don't forget about me'. I think he did enough last night to get himself a job. If not here, somewhere, but I think here."
Nichols signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2023 and was released by the team in September of his rookie year. After off-and-on stints with the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad from 2023 to 2025, Nichols joined the Steelers in July 2025.
While Nichols was ultimately waived by Pittsburgh as part of the final roster cuts, he was brought back via the Steelers' practice squad and even made his NFL debut in 2025 against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Atlanta Dream had a rough go of things on Friday night. The Dream entered the action against the Portland Fire looking to stave off the Indiana Fever and hold onto the fourth spot in the standings. Unfortunately for Angel Reese and company, Portland, which plays hard every night despite its record, pulled off a 101-83 upset, while the Fever defeated the Connecticut Sun 111-91. As a result, Indiana overtook the fourth spot in the standings and would have home-court advantage over Atlanta if the season ended today.
It was an uncharacteristically off night for Angel Reese. Even though she finished with another impressive double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds, Reese was just 5-for-14 from the field and let her frustrations boil over several times during the game.
One such occurrence came at the end of the first quarter, when she missed a shot at the rim, felt she deserved a foul called on her defender, and made her feelings very clear to the referee.
Reese's actions during the game earned her some heavy criticism from fans online.
"My favorite clip from last night was when she hit them with the "too small" celebration while losing by 13 and shooting like 30%," one fan posted on X.

ROUND ROCK - Is Weiss' offense even better than anticipated?
While a lot was expected of the star-studded Wolves, who seemingly have high-level college recruits at every skill position, they appeared in midseason form Friday as most UIL schools began the Texas high school football season.
Producing more than 500 yards of offense, which looks even better considering nearly all of that came in three quarters, Weiss topped Round Rock 42-28 in a highly entertaining game at Dragon Stadium.
And though more will be known after their next game against Lake Travis, the Wolves signaled that any preseason hype was certainly deserved.
Jaxon Schad threw for 306 yards and five touchdowns and added 87 yards and a score on the ground. Now a junior, Schad is not only bigger and faster, which he showed in breaking several tackles scrambling, but his accuracy and touch were nearly flawless as he completed 21 of 25 attempts.

The Indiana Fever have clinched a spot in the 2026 WNBA playoffs, and it's thanks in large part to the outstanding play of their two guards, Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, who are both having career years.
Clark is averaging 22.1 points and 8.3 ****** ists entering Friday night's game against the Connecticut Sun, while Mitchell is averaging 24.8 points while shooting 51% from the field and 45.5% from the three-point line.
As the regular season enters the home stretch, the Fever have begun launching social media campaigns for their players to win individual awards. However, for MVP, the social media admin couldn't decide which guard to highlight, and went with a video calling for both of them to receive the award.
Some fans, though, felt it was disrespecful to not champion Clark and Clark alone for the award, as she's the only player in the league who is top three in both points and ****** sits per game.

Bayern Munich are heavy favorites to lift the Bundesliga once again this season and it didn't take the home side long to show why that is. While there are still new faces here adjusting to the team, the match was the perfect start to the season, with Bayern getting in the win column in front of the Allianz Arena crowd.
After giving Josha Vagnomann plenty of criticism in the past for his brief appearances for the German national team, the Stuttgart defender came up big for the visitors today. Outside of the goal, the German had a generally strong game and was an impressive player for Stuttgart on the day. That of course changed when the German defender made a comical error of an own goal, sliding into the ball, putting it past his own goalkeeper.
While Finn Jeltsch had less memorable moments in the match, his consistency at his age is remarkable, and he is the clear leader of an already strong backline. Jeltsch remains a bright young star to watch out for in the future.
It would be easy to give the choice to Upamecano after he opened up Bayern's account for the Bundesliga season, and had an overall impressive match. However, Upamecano often gets his flowers for how great he has been over the last year.
Another player that does deserve their flowers today is Davies. The Canadian was highly criticized for sitting out the majority of the World Cup for his host nation, but the defender looks hungry this season in a way we haven't seen in some time. While he won't be credited for any goal contributions today, it was his action that lead to Vagnomann's own goal. If Davies can keep up this attacking threat all year round, Kompany will have a ridiculous amount of good options at his disposal.

Wyoming's Republican Gov. Mark Gordon voiced concerns about the Justice Department election monitors who observed the primary election in his state last week, saying he's asked his attorney general to look into their "aggressive" behavior.
The Justice Department sent two Civil Rights Division attorneys to Laramie County, Wyoming, which includes the state capital of Cheyenne. But some officials, including the state attorney general, weren't made aware of the move in advance, Gordon said at a state canvassing board meeting Wednesday.
"It sounded like the behavior of the observers was a bit aggressive," Gordon said, adding, "It just was irregular and, and I have asked the attorney general to start looking into … the nature of the visits and all that sort of stuff."
The DOJ, when reached for comment, pointed CNN to an August 18 statement from Wyoming US Attorney Darin Smith: "Voters deserve absolute confidence that their ballots are secure and their voices are heard without interference…. We are working alongside local officials to ensure every lawful vote is protected."
CNN has reached out to the governor's office for comment.

We understand why this moment has prompted scrutiny. Youth sports have become more expensive. More complicated. Too often, families feel like they're being asked to spend thousands of dollars before a child has even decided whether they love the game.
Those concerns affect far more than the next generation of athletes and deserve addressing head-on.
But as the national conversation continues, we also believe it's important to distinguish between the practices that deserve criticism and the investments that are helping remove barriers for families. Stanislas Wawrinka has been a fixture of my life for 18 years.
I didn't know who Wawrinka was the first time I saw him play. I watched him in-person at the 2008 Pacific Life Open (Now BNP Paribas) in Indian Wells, California. It's the biggest tournament outside the four majors. My father and I drove there in my freshman year of high school.
The first men's tennis match I ever saw was between Stanislas Wawrink against this young challenger to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. His name was Novak Djokovic, and he just won the 2008 Australian Open.

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Dylan Brown and the Drive's explosive offense paved the way to a 7-1 win against the Rome Emperors, regaining a series lead 2-1. The Drive improves to 28-29, while the Emperors falls to 25-31 in the second-half standings.
A slow-building Drive offense finally saw a homer in game three, courtesy of Isaiah Jackson's 20th long-ball of the year. His two runs driven in gave Greenville an early advantage in the first inning.
Brown set the tone with a 1-2-3 first inning, but Luis Guanipa jumped on a pitch in the second to hit a leadoff homer, cutting the lead to 2-1.
Nazzan Zanetello answered right back with a home run in the bottom of the frame. Greenville kept rolling in the third, adding two more runs on an Antonio Anderson sac-fly and a Ronny Hernandez RBI double to extend the lead. Anderson singled in Jackson in the fifth, making it 6-1.
Meanwhile, Brown dominated the mound, giving up just one run on two hits through six strong innings. He ended his night with a well-deserved standing ovation from the Fluor Field crowd, finishing with five strikeouts for 103 on the season, leading all Drive pitchers.

The Los Angeles Rams wrapped up a perfect preseason on Thursday night with their third straight win of the summer. They beat the Los Angeles Chargers, 20-18, led by rookie Ty Simpson's impressive performance as the starter.
This was the last chance for several players to push for a roster spot, or at the very least, a job on the practice squad. These six players stood out in a positive way, helping the Rams take down the Chargers at SoFi.
Simpson had his opportunities limited by a lopsided score last week, but he got the start on Thursday night and was given every opportunity to throw the ball. He turned in a very good performance, completing 18 of 23 passes for 119 passes and one touchdown. He avoided a turnover for the third straight game, too.
His best throw of the preseason came on an 11-yard touchdown strike to Brennan Presley, rolling out to his left and making a perfect throw to his receiver in the end zone for six points. He was confident and accurate, completing 11 of his first 12 passes. It would've been hard for Simpson to have a much better preseason than he had.
This was Connors' last opportunity to prove he deserves to make the team and he gave the coaching staff a lot to like. He caught another touchdown pass on a Texas route, finding the void in the zone and hauling in Matthew Caldwell's pass at the goal line.

What a dominant showing from start to finish: our Red Bulls celebrated a thoroughly deserved 3–0 win over Mjällby on home turf to secure their spot in the UEFA Europa League's league phase. After a dominant but goalless first half, our lads were rewarded after the break with a brace from Konate and an additional strike from Haris Tabakovic.
After a cautious start, our lads steadily upped the tempo and created their first big chance in the twelfth minute. Tabakovic intercepted a misplaced pass from the Swedes, kept his composure, and played a sharp, low ball across the box—Eddi Baidoo missed connecting with it in the centre by just an inch or two. With possession hovering around 70 percent at times and clear dominance in terms of shots on goal, our Red Bulls took control of the match early on.
Mjällby tried to disrupt our flow of play with aggressive tackling, picking up their first two yellow cards after just twenty minutes. Following a heavy challenge by Granath on Nikolas Veratschnig, our right-back - clearly in pain - even called for a VAR check, though none was forthcoming. While the visitors offered absolutely nothing in attack, they made life difficult for our lads through sheer physicality.
In the final fifteen minutes of the first half, we carved out further opportunities to take the lead against the Swedes' deep defensive block. First, Abubakr Barry unleashed a well-placed long-range shot following a counter-attack (32'). Shortly after, Mjällby's tight man-marking prevented a goal when Baidoo played a ball across to Tabakovic. Just before the half-time whistle, Veratschnig curled a dangerous free-kick towards the corner of the target, but Mjällby goalkeeper Wallinder was equal to it with a strong save. The first half ended goalless.
After the restart, Haris Tabakovic and Konate initially missed chances from promising positions in the center of the box (57') before the breakthrough finally came. Following a long-range shot from Redzic, Wallinder could only parry the ball forward, and Konate reacted quickest to tap in a deserved opening goal (61').

Troy Aikman won three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys, but Christopher "Mad Dog" Russo also believes he and Joe Buck deserve credit for bringing one to ESPN.
During his Mad Dog Unleashed radio show on SiriusXM earlier this week, Russo was discussing Tony Romo's future with CBS, guessing the network would love to use his recent arrest as cause to absolve themselves from the rest of the 10-year, $180 million contract he signed in 2020. And if they do get out from under Romo's contract, Russo believes the era of networks paying ***** ysts tens of millions of dollars might be over.
"Now listen, Aikman and Buck got a fortune," Russo admitted. Pentagon officials on Wednesday claimed they have uncovered classified documents that were "hidden away in safes where they would not be found" that shed new light on the chaotic end to the U.S. war in Afghanistan five years ago — but declined to offer public details of the revelations.

Wrestling news outlet SEScoops has retracted its story reporting that ESPN would not be renewing its contract with WWE when the current agreement between the two companies expires in 2030.
"Before a story like this runs, the subject deserves a direct chance to respond, and that step wasn't taken to the appropriate standard," SEScoops said in a statement posted to social media. "Since publication, it's come to light that this effort fell way short. We ran it and the buck stops with us."
SEScoops added that it had "parted ways" with BJ Bethel, who wrote the report.

The NFL has had more than 100 Pro Bowlers in recent years because of players who were either too injured or disinterested in participating. Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who started only seven games and threw more interceptions than touchdowns, was a Pro Bowl replacement last season.
The league announced Wednesday that it is doing away with the game. Instead, the NFL will name 88 Pro Bowlers it will honor in Los Angeles before the Super Bowl in February.
Commissioner Roger Goodell explained the reasoning after NFL owners wrapped up their meeting in Atlanta.
"I think this is something that we talked to our players about, the Pro Bowl players in particular," Goodell said, via Mark Maske of Front Office Sports. "We had conference calls the last couple years: What's working? What's not? What would you like to see? And the number one thing that came out—and there were a lot of wonderful comments by the players—one is: 'We want to be honored and celebrated as a Pro Bowl player.' . . . It just opened my eyes. I never really thought about it in the context of that. It's not honoring the replacement players. It's honoring the guys who are selected by the fans, by the players, by the coaches.
"And so that was really the core of it, is: How do we do this in the right way? And our players, you know, they did what they normally do. They had great recommendations on how to do that. And second, a willingness to lead that the all-star format doesn't really work for our game. . . . It's something that we felt strongly about. And I think our players, they deserve to be celebrated when they get the Pro Bowl honor."

Justin Baldoni's attorney, Bryan Freedman, is declaring a legal victory after a judge awarded Blake Lively only a fraction of the nearly $8 million she requested in attorneys' fees and costs. The law allows a prevailing defendant in certain defamation cases involving reports of ****** ual ****** ault, harassment or discrimination to recover reasonable attorneys' fees and costs. Although Freedman said he fundamentally supports the law's intended purpose, he questioned how it was used in the dispute involving Lively and Baldoni.
"Notwithstanding the fact that the law was applied in ways it was never intended for, my clients intentionally left Section 47.1 to be ruled on without any appellate rights to appeal as part of the settlement agreement, to prevent either party from overturning the law," Freedman said.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — To extend their stay at the Little League World Series, Bayonne's All Stars needed to bounce back from their first defeat of the summer and win Tuesday night's game against the Great Lakes team from Ohio.
It was Bayonne's first game in the elimination bracket, and Jett Bridges, who last pitched during the New Jersey state tournament three weeks ago, started on the mound. He recorded three shutout innings before walking the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the fourth. Shortstop Gabe Garcia Jr. then relieved Bridges on the mound and struck out a batter before allowing an RBI single.
But Great Lakes then broke the game open with a double to center. By the end of the frame, Great Lakes led, 5-0, and that was all Ohio needed to eliminate Bayonne.
The final was 5-2 after Bayonne's late rally attempt fell short.
"The kids had a great run," Bayonne manager Justin Smith said. "I couldn't be more proud of them. They outplayed us and deserved to win. Couldn't ask for more."
