No. 23 Houston built a big lead and held off a late rally to open the 2026 season with a 33-20 win over Oregon State on Saturday at TDECU Stadium.
Quarterback Conner Weigman threw for 305 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown to Amare Thomas on the Cougars' opening possession, and scored a late touchdown as the Cougars won their fifth opener in the last seven years.
Oregon State, a nearly three-touchdown underdog, led 7-6 on a 3-yard Braden Atkinson. The Cougars scored 20 unanswered points on touchdown runs of 51 and 1 yards by Re'Shaun Sanford II and Makhi Hughes, respectively, and 42- and 32-yard field goals by Jonathan Dimas, the first of his career.

After Hughes' touchdown put the Cougars ahead 26-7 with 6 ½ minutes left in the third quarter, Oregon State scored on two straight drives - a 7-yard touchdown catch by Jess Legree and 4-yard run by A.J. Newberry. The last touchdown was set up by Sailasa Vadrawale III near the goal line early in the fourth quarter.
