BATON ROUGE — Was there a loser in the Lane Kiffin decision saga?
Late last season, Ole Miss was in the midst of its best regular season in program history, ultimately going 11-1. The Rebels, thanks to Kiffin, his star quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy, were on their way to the College Football Playoff for the first time.
In the middle of that, Kiffin was conversing with LSU about its football head coaching job opening. Come season's end, Kiffin decided to take the LSU position. Despite wanting to stay on to coach the Rebels through the CFP, Ole Miss leadership would not allow him to do so.
KIFFIN: LSU NO PRESSURE VS OLE MISS 'Hatred' all Lane Kiffin's way, he says LSU players can just go play vs Ole Miss

2027 NFL Draft QB rankings: Darian Mensah, Drew Mestemaker on the rise appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The 2027 NFL Draft class was talked up to be loaded with quarterbacks, which was much-needed for many NFL teams coming off of what many claimed was a one-QB class in 2026. Before the college football season, this was billed as one of the most talented QB classes in recent memory.
So far, that hasn't necessarily played out on the field. Dante Moore, our No. 1 quarterback on the board in the preseason, has looked awful, to put it bluntly. Arch Manning and Julian Sayin were up-and-down in their blockbuster Week 2 clash between Ohio State and Texas.
On the other side of the coin, Darian Mensah and Trinidad Chambliss have been very impressive so far in the opening few weeks, and CJ Carr has also played very well against a soft schedule to open the year.

While the Cleveland Browns' 2026-27 NFL season is set to begin on Sunday, many fans will continue to tune into the 2026 college football season in hopes of a new quarterback.
Last week, the quarterback viewing guide highlighted LSU's Sam Leavitt and Ole Miss' Trinidad Chambliss as two names to watch for in Week One. Both quarterbacks thrived in their primetime matchups, and this weekend, there are even more prospects in key contests.
Here are three quarterbacks Browns fans should watch during Week Two of the 2026 college football season.
Saturday at 12:00 PM EST vs Oklahoma State (ESPN)
After barely surviving a potential upset against the Boise State Broncos in Week One, the Oregon Ducks will not receive an easy break on Saturday.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Lucas Carneiro kicked a 48-yard field goal as time expired to give ninth-ranked Mississippi a 41-38 victory over No. 24 Louisville on Sunday night in the Music City Kickoff.
The week's only game between ranked teams started sloppy only to turn into a second-half thriller.
Lincoln Kienholz, in his first career start after three seasons on Ohio State's bench, tied it for Louisville at 38 with 1:28 left. The quarterback found Lawayne McCoy on the sideline for a 54-yard catch-and-run TD with 4:42 to go before his 7-yard TD run with 1:28 left.
Trinidad Chambliss set up the winning field goal with an 18-yard pass on third-and-6. Chambliss finished with 351 yards passing with three touchdowns, and he also ran for a fourth score all after halftime. Kewan Lacy ran for 61 yards on 17 carries with a 1-yard TD before being sidelined by an injured thigh.
Maybe it was a bit of opening night nerves or starting with a ranked, Power Four opponent. Both Ole Miss, who ended last season losing to Miami in the College Football Playoff semifinals, and Louisville had issues in the first half.

Ole Miss kicker Lucas Carneiro bailed out the Rebels with a 48-yard field goal as time expired for a 41-38 win over Louisville on Sunday night.
The No. 9 Rebels had given up 14 straight points after taking a 38-24 lead in the fourth quarter. But an 18-yard completion from Trinidad Chambliss to Caleb Odom set up Carneiro's game-winner.
Louisville tied the game with 1:28 to go on a seven-yard TD run by QB Lincoln Kienholz. Had the Cardinals scored with less time left, it's plausible that coach Jeff Brohm would have gone for a 2-point conversion instead of a game-winning extra point. But Louisville kicked the PAT with the hope of getting the ball back or sending the game to overtime.
That did not happen as neither defense had much success in the second half. The teams combined for over 600 yards in the second half as Chambliss threw three touchdowns and rushed for another after halftime.
He finished 21-of-36 passing for 336 yards and those three touchdowns. Two of them went to Deuce Alexander, who had a breakout game with five catches for 159 yards and a pair of 62-yard touchdowns in that second half. Alexander, who is in his second year with the Rebels after transferring from Wake Forest, didn't top the 100-yard mark in any game in 2025.

NASHVILLE, TN — Ole Miss football quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has a tradition with his mother, Cheryl, before every game.
Chambliss prays with his mom and his father, Trent, who come to the front of the stands shortly before kickoff at each game. Expect the tradition to continue in 2026.
No. 10 Ole Miss opens on Sept. 6 (6:30 p.m. CT, ABC) against Louisville at Nissan Stadium.
Chambliss has gone from an SEC unknown to a superstar over the past season. He has been featured in Times Square and the Las Vegas Sphere as part of Ole Miss' joint Heisman Trophy campaign with running back Kewan Lacy.
"Our time that has now become public, which is a pregame prayer, that was a private moment that was very public now," his mom said last season. "At the end of the day that's OK because it's spreading the word of God."

Sept. 2 (UPI) -- The Minnesota Vikings agreed to sign free agent defender Kyle Van Noy.
Sources told the Minnesota Star Tribune, The Athletic and the Ringer about the pact Tuesday night. Van Noy spent the last three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.
The 12-year veteran totaled a career-high 12.5 sacks, with 14 tackles for a loss, two passes defensed, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery over 16 appearances for the Ravens in 2024, en route to Pro Bowl honors. He totaled four tackles for a loss, two sacks, four passes defensed and an interception over 15 appearances last season.
Van Noy will bring depth to the Vikings' edge rusher group, which lost Jonathan Greenard through an off-season trade to the Philadelphia Eagles and Tyler Batty to an ACL tear in their preseason finale.
Van Noy is expected to play behind Dallas Turner and Andrew Van Ginkel, who played with him in 2020 under former Miami Dolphins coach Brain Flores -- the Vikings' defensive coordinator. Chaz Chambliss and Bo Richter are the other outside linebackers on the Vikings roster.

Meet the 7 underrated QBs who could be college football's next Fernando Mendoza originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
There might never be a better example of how drastically a quarterback class can change in a few short months than the 2025 college football season.
LaNorris Sellers, Cade Klubnik and Garrett Nussmeier were all considered legitimate first-round prospects and potential Heisman Trophy contenders. The name Fernando Mendoza was known by a much more limited number of fans, with the exception of those who stayed up deep into the night to watch him duel with Cam Ward at Cal.
The quarterbacks to watch this college football season are supposed to be Arch Manning, Dante Moore, CJ Carr, Julian Sayin, Trinidad Chambliss and Darian Mensah. It doesn't usually work out that way, though.
At least one quarterback without much name recognition in Week 1 is going to find his way into the thick of the Heisman Trophy race or the first round discussion, if not both. A rise like Mendoza's is tough to mirror, but there are a number of quarterbacks who have the talent to reach stardom in 2026.

College football is officially back, and after a handful of games took place last Saturday during Week 0, the rest of the country gets back on the field from Thursday to Monday during Week 1. It's the first full college football weekend of the season, and the long offseason is finally over.
Here at Sooners Wire, we'll certainly have our eyes all over the season-opening game for the Oklahoma Sooners, which will take place in Norman on Friday at 7 p.m. against the UTEP Miners. However, with a full slate of games for the first time since late November, there will be plenty of intriguing matchups to keep an eye on during Labor Day weekend.
Here are the top five games to watch in Week 1.
Louisville and Ole Miss will face off at a neutral site at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee for the Liberty Mutual Music City Kickoff. The Cardinals are viewed as a dark horse team in the ACC heading into this season, and they'll have a big stage to make an early statement in non-league action. Head coach Jeff Brohm and quarterback Lincoln Kienholz will look to get off to a fast start in 2026.
On the other sideline, star quarterback Trinidad Chambliss leads the Rebels after a run in the College Football Playoff last year. It's Pete Golding's first full season as head coach, and his team has very high expectations this fall. The whole country will be watching, and the Rebs need to avoid the early setback.

Auburn football lost all three scholarship quarterbacks from last season's roster to the transfer portal. One of those quarterbacks, Ashton Daniels, has locked in a starting role with Florida State. What is the status of the other two quarterbacks heading into the new season?
It was expected that Deuce Knight would sit behind Trinidad Chambliss at Ole Miss, but Jackson Arnold joined UNLV's roster with a fair chance of winning the starting quarterback job. However, he has not officially claimed it.
UNLV head coach Dan Mullen was asked about the quarterback situation in Las Vegas ahead of the Rebels' week zero game against Memphis at Allegiant Stadium, and shared that neither Arnold nor Alex Orji has claimed the starting job. Mullen claims that the starter will be dictated by the opening play of Saturday's game, which has yet to be drawn up. However, both quarterbacks will see the field on Saturday.
Arnold transferred to UNLV following the coaching change from Hugh Freeze to Alex Golesh, leaving Auburn after spending just one season. He was named the starting quarterback for the Tigers after spending two seasons with Oklahoma, and went on to start eight games for Auburn before the job was handed over to Ashton Daniels.
In 10 total appearances, Arnold passed for 1,309 yards and six touchdowns, adding 311 yards on the ground with eight touchdowns. Now with his third college program, Arnold hopes to find his stride with UNLV and become the quarterback he was projected to become as a five-star prospect out of high school.

Every college football fan knows the exact moment that Trinidad Chambliss vaulted into the national conversation, and became a sneaky option for the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
It came on a drive against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, when the Ole Miss quarterback turned in a dazzling series of plays as Chambliss and company drove 75 yards to take the lead against the Bulldogs. It might be hard to pick out a favorite play from that drive, but this one certainly stands out, a rocket on the move to Harrison Wallace III after escaping the pocket:
Ole Miss' dream season came to an end in the next game, a loss to Miami in the Fiesta Bowl. Following that defeat, Chambliss needed another win — in the court system — to be eligible for one more season of college football.
Now that he has that win under his belt, it is time to dream about what he can be on the field this year, and beyond.
Chambliss is not your prototypical quarterback prospect, and despite what he does on the field this season for Ole Miss there will be questions he will have to face during the NFL Draft process. He will be a 25-year-old rookie in the NFL, he is not quite six-feet tall, he was a backup for three seasons at a Division II program before earning the starting job, and his success last year came in a Lane Kiffin offense that might not be a seamless transition to the NFL.

OXFORD — There are high expectations for Ole Miss football in 2026.
The preseason AP Top 25 Poll was released on Aug. 17. The Rebels are No. 9, with Ohio State earning the No. 1 spot.
It is better than the No. 10 ranking Ole Miss got in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll released Aug. 4. Ohio State got the No. 1 spot in that poll as well.
Ole Miss is coming off its first College Football Playoff appearance. The Rebels made some noise in the CFP in 2025 by beating Tulane in the first round and Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. The run ended in the Fiesta Bowl with a 31-27 loss to Miami.
Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy return to form what should be a formidable duo. Ole Miss has launched a joint Heisman Trophy campaign to highlight their stars.

Trinidad Chambliss has a chance to become an Ole Miss football legend, even more so than he already is after being thrust into the starting role last season before leading the Rebels to two College Football Playoff wins. It was part of the star quarterback's reasoning for returning to Ole Miss rather than following former coach Lane Kiffin to LSU in the transfer portal this offseason.
And maybe nothing tells Ole Miss fans you're more committed to their program and community than buying a house on campus in Oxford, Mississippi.
"Well, one, it was an investment," Chambliss said on ESPN's "Official Visit with Rece Davis. "I feel like there are a lot of things you can do with your NIL money and one of them I think was buying a house on the square was a good investment. For years to come, I can have it as a rental property. I can always come back and go to games when my playing career is over with.
"Also, too, I just love Oxford. I'm an Ole Miss Rebel for life. I know that this is home now, or a second home. I felt like that was an important piece for me to do."

Expectations are high in South Bend for Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr; he opened as the +700 favorite to win the 2026 Heisman trophy at BetMGM. The Fighting Irish currently have +650 odds to win the national championship, tied for the second-best odds with Texas — and right behind favorite Ohio State at +600.
Texas QB Arch Manning (+750) is the Heisman co-favorite, followed by Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss (+900) and Oregon QB Dante Moore (10-1).
Superstar Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has the best odds for any non-QB at 12-1.

In one-quarterback leagues, and even in Superflex formats, the quarterback pool is quite plentiful compared to their NFL counterparts. From a sheer numbers perspective, there are 68 teams comprising the Power Four player pool (with Notre Dame), with just 12 signal-callers starting on any given week (up to 24 in Superflex).
Your eight bench spots thin out quickly, which compels managers to churn through players on bye weeks and in time shares. In the standard 1QB format, rostering two quarterbacks seems to be the sweet spot from a roster construction standpoint in 1QB leagues, so as to not leave yourself short on RB /WR depth. The ability to stream waiver wire pickups who are facing poor defenses make the high-end quarterbacks valuable and the middle-to-lower tier easily replaceable
You will want to roster four QBs in Superflex leagues if possible, so expanding rosters to 20 players with a 10-man bench is advised. Utilizing a two-quarterback rotation in a Superflex format is not going to suffice with bye weeks, schedule quirks and injuries looming. Ideally a 4QB construction will allow you the flexibility to play matchups and still be covered in case an unexpected change of circumstances arises.
Play Yahoo's new College Fantasy Football game: Create or join a league now!
Your draft approach will vary depending on whether you play Superflex or 1QB formats. In standard Yahoo 1QB leagues I wouldn't take any signal-caller except Arch in the top-50. For the top-100 and I'd expand that list to Trinidad Chambliss, Devon Dampier and Drew Mestemaker, in that order. Keep in mind the 4-point passing touchdown format greatly depreciates the efficacy of pass-only, pro style quarterbacks. So I wouldn't make the mistake of reaching for Dante Moore within the first 10 rounds when you can take a dual-threat with 25 FPPG potential later on.

The Oklahoma Sooners have a total of seven Heisman Trophy winners in the program's storied history. Running backs Billy Vessels (1952), Steve Owens (1969), and Billy Sims (1978) took home the coveted award in the 20th century, while quarterbacks Jason White (2003), Sam Bradford (2008), Baker Mayfield (2017), and Kyler Murray (2018) captured the trophy in the 21st century.
However, the last time OU had a player finish the season as a Heisman finalist came in 2019. That means Oklahoma has yet to have a Heisman finalist in the Brent Venables era.
One ESPN **** yst thinks that could all change this season. Jordan Rodgers highlighted his top five Heisman Trophy candidates coming into the season, and he placed OU starting quarterback John Mateer at No. 5 on his list. Mateer finished behind Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss, Texas QB Arch Manning, Indiana QB Josh Hoover, and Ohio State QB Julian Sayin.
"He's gonna be 100% healthy," Rodgers said. "When he is, he's one of the more dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks in the country ... John Mateer's gonna put up massive numbers."
Of course, Mateer was the Heisman Trophy favorite through the first month of the season last year, but his broken hand derailed that train. His play dropped off after having surgery, and he couldn't place the ball the same way he had in September.

How will the Jon Sumrall era live on in Florida football history? With about a month to go before the Gators kick off the 2026 season, the biggest hope for now is that it's at least an improvement over the Billy Napier one.
The plug got pulled on Napier seven games into his fourth season, a barrier that no UF coach has crossed since Urban Meyer. The Gators haven't been in the College Football Playoff rankings since Dan Mullen coached them to the 2020 SEC championship game.
To turn that around, maybe a coach freshly removed from leading Tulane to the CFP will help. He knows he's got a stud at running back in Jadan Baugh, he of 1,170 yards and eight touchdowns in what was otherwise a dismal 4-8 campaign. Who starts at quarterback is a whole different manner: Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo is one of six transfers projected as starters at Ourlads, but redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr. could just as easily win the job.
There's still time to decide who best fits in new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner's Air Raid scheme. The first two games of the season will (barring disaster the likes of the South Florida loss last season) serve as mere tune-ups for the SEC opener at Auburn and former USF two-way QB Byrum Brown. Then it's the big early test: a showdown with Trinidad Chambliss, Kewan Lacy and an Ole Miss team fresh off a CFP semifinal appearance.
If the Gators can tread water through the gauntlet of Texas, Georgia (in Atlanta as Jacksonville updates its stadium) and Oklahoma, there's hope they could lock down a solid bowl résumé against Florida State on Black Friday. And hey, maybe UF can end the year back in the CFP rankings.

While talking season is in full swing, only 40 days remain before the preseason predictions cease and SEC football officially begins.
Five head coaches in the league are set to make their debuts with their new respective squads, as they attempt to usher in a new era by rebuilding and revamping. Others, like Mississippi State head coach Jeff Lebby and South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer, are on the hot seat if they can't turn things around and improve from last season's efforts.
Outside of coaching headlines, major quarterback battles are occurring at Arkansas, Florida, Tennessee and Alabama, as they look to find their starter for the upcoming campaign. Meanwhile, established gunslingers like Trinidad Chambliss and Arch Manning are looking to exceed expectations and bring hardware to the SEC once again.
That's just a small glimpse of all the storylines set to unfold in a few short weeks. The time for talking is almost over, with Missouri opening the season for the SEC against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on September 3.
Based on talent, coaching staff and scheduling, here are my predictions of where each SEC team will finish the 2026-27 season:

SEC Media Days have come and gone, and now we have the official preseason media predictions for the league.
The Georgia Bulldogs were once again picked to win the SEC, receiving 88 first-place votes. The next highest first-place vote receiver was, by a wide margin, the Texas Longhorns with 57 votes.
No other team received double-digit votes, though Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma and even Kentucky received at least one first-place vote.
The league also released its preseason All-SEC teams, with Ole Miss quarterback and running back duo Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy leading the way on the First Team. Here are the full preseason SEC predictions from the media.

For the past three seasons, no Southeastern Conference team has played in the College Football Playoff championship game. It is a sore subject in a league that had previously won four consecutive national ***** les from 2019 through 2022. This season, the SEC could again have a team playing for the championship, as several top teams have returning quarterbacks.
The SEC had eight quarterbacks in the top 19 of The Athletic’s recent rankings, including six who started for their teams last season in No. 1 Trinidad Chambliss (Ole Miss), No. 7 Arch Manning (Texas), No. 11 Gunner Stockton (Georgia), No. 13 Marcel Reed (Texas A&M), No. 16 John Mateer (Oklahoma) and No. 18 LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina). The other two highly-ranked SEC quarterbacks are transfers in No. 8 Sam Leavitt (LSU) and No. 19 Byrum Brown (Auburn).
Chambliss is coming off the best season of any SEC quarterback, as he led the Rebels to the CFP semifinals. Although Chambliss wasn’t supposed to start and came from Division II Ferris State, he took over the starting job in September and threw for 3,937 yards and 22 touchdowns and ran for 527 yards and eight touchdowns. In three CFP games, he completed 67.9% of his passes for 921 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
In February, a Mississippi judge ruled in Chambliss’s favor, granting him a preliminary injunction in a case against the NCAA and giving him another year of eligibility. After finishing eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting last year, he should contend for the award this year. He will be among the most hyped players this season, especially when Ole Miss on Sept. 19 hosts LSU, whose coach, Lane Kiffin, coached at Ole Miss for six seasons before leaving last November before the CFP began.

With the conclusion of Texas A&M's appearance at SEC Media Days on Wednesday afternoon, the Aggies are full speed ahead towards the 2026 season opener vs. Missouri State on Saturday, Sept. 5, and for third-year coach Mike Elko, building on last season's immense success after making it to the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history remains the primary focus.
Already establishing a strong culture, Elko's decision to elevate wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins as the new offensive coordinator received plenty of skepticism from both the fan base and national media alike, but during Wednesday's press conference, Elko continued to cheerlead his decision, which should pay off given that Marcel Reed returns at quarterback for his second full starting season.
Among the national media, ESPN and Amazon Prime Video college football and NFL ****** yst Kirk Herbstreit, one of the hardest-working men in the sports broadcasting landscape, shares a history with Marcel Reed after his sons played with the redshirt junior signal-caller at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee.
However, that doesn't mean Herbstreit has avoided criticizing the Aggie QB when warranted, especially after his poor performance against Texas and Miami in the first round of the CFP, but he remains one of the few, now including former Alabama coach Nick Saban, who fully believe Marcel Reed, similar to Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss, to be one of the best overall athletes in the country.
During his appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Herbstreit stated that he believes Texas A&M could "make a run" towards a national ****** le this season with Marcel Reed leading the way.

Pete Golding was in attendance at SEC Media Days on Wednesday and spoke with reporters.
He gave a passionate speech about tampering in college football, but his more interesting answer was about how he approached quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy about staying with the Rebels after former head coach Lane Kiffin infamously left for LSU.
Golding’s quote was targeted at Kiffin, but more in the eyes of creating a legacy and what it means for the players’ future, per ESPN’s David Hale.
“Football’s gonna end. What are you going to use? You gotta use an alumni base to be able to get you a job. Where are you gonna bring your kids to? What jersey are they wearing?
Y’all two created a legacy in one season that’s gonna be hard for anybody to overtake, and for what’s going on now, for Coach Kiffin to leave — go Google Lane Kiffin. I had them both do it in my office. Google Lane Kiffin, the dude they’d have built a statue of here three days ago. Google his name right now. They wouldn’t ******* on him if he was on fire.

Will Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning win the Heisman Trophy? Right now, Manning is one of two favorites to become the third Longhorns player to win the prize.
BetMGM has released the Heisman Trophy odds and betting favorites For 2026. Two names share the top spot in the developing futures market for college football's top award. Manning and Notre Dame QB Marcus Freeman are both +750 to take home the award. Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss, Ohio State's Julian Sayin and Miami's Darian Mensah round out the top five.
Last offseason, as the national media rushed to crown Arch Manning as the greatest quarterback of his generation, there were plenty of early predictions of a third Heisman Trophy at Texas. It didn't work out that way in 2025. In hindsight, it wasn't very realistic. But for 2026? It is very realistic.
The redshirt junior passed for 3,163 yards with 26 touchdowns to seven interceptions in 2025. Manning also rushed for 399 yards with 10 touchdowns. He ended the season with a huge game against Michigan in the Citrus Bowl, totaling 376 yards with four touchdowns in the 41-27 win.

Boston College is following the Trinidad Chambliss playbook.
The former D-II QB Chambliss went to Ole Miss, was a superstar, and is now ranked the No. 1 quarterback in college football by The Athletic.
For the season ahead, BC will be relying on a Division II transfer of its own, Mason McKenzie.
From Saginaw Valley State in Michigan, McKenzie has a lot of physical tools.

Pro Football Focus is a highly respected and widely recognized **** ytics organization that is often used in both sports media and NFL front offices. That just means, what they put out, should be heard out.
They recently released their top 50 rankings heading into the 2026 college football season and three Ole Miss Rebels made the cut. That leaves them tied for fourth most on the list behind Oregon, Texas and Notre Dame.
Kewan Lacy is the first on the board at no. 10. He led the country in rushing attempts and power four running backs in rushing touchdowns. He finished second in yards, yards after contact and missed tackles. He is the second running back on the board behind Ahmad Hardy (6) of Missouri.
Trinidad Chambliss checks in at no. 12 on the list and the 4th quarterback. He is behind Julian Sayin (4), Dante Moore (7) and Arch Manning (9). Chambliss had the second highest rating against pressure in the country. Wanna talk about pressure? He put up his best score against Georgia in the playoffs.
Will Echoles is the final Reb to make the list, slotting in at no. 19. I did not know this but Echoles led the P4 in pressures and stops as an interior defensive lineman. Only AJ Holmes Jr of Texas Tech finished the season graded higher.

The Heisman Trophy is arguably the best individual award in American sports, professional included. There are weekly columns, year-round odds, and continual commentary on who will win the bronze statue, and once a player does, he is announced from that point forward as "Heisman Trophy winner ..."
Maybe the only other ***** le before a name that means more is "Sir," as those who are knighted by the Royal Family of the United Kingdom. Okay, maybe that's a stretch, but still, becoming a Heisman winner is something that will follow a player all of his life, and in fact, changes his life.
So, it's no surprise then that many focus on the Heisman so much. To that end, Brad Crawford of 247Sports shared the six players that he would bet on to win the bronze statue. Not all the players who have the best odds by the sportsbooks out there, mind you, but which ones he believes actually have a legitimate shot at winning the award.
So, which two Buckeyes does Crawford like to be in the Heisman conversation? It's the same two that you would likely think of: quarterback Julian Sayin and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. The OSU quarterback has been among the top, and sometimes on top of some of the Heisman odds in the preseason, but he currently sits among the top four or five on most sportsbooks' odds. As far as Smith goes, he could very well be the best college football player, and in fact, probably will be, but it'll be hard to win the Heisman because he's not a quarterback, and there's the built-in bias.
In other words, there's a good chance that Ohio State will again have another representative in New York as a finalist for the storied award, but who else might be there, according to Crawford? The other four players he'd put a wager on are Notre Dame quarterback C.J. Carr, Texas gunslinger Arch Manning, Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, and Miami (FL) signal-caller Darian Mensah.

Tristan Smith will have to keep waiting to hear the final decision on whether he will play for the Tigers in 2026 or not.
After a June 8 court hearing in Smith’s case against the NCAA, there was no immediate ruling on whether the Tigers receiver will be eligible for the 2026 season. According to Derrian Carter, Judge Salvini said she expects to have a decision “by the end of the week.”
Smith is fighting for an extra season of eligibility after the NCAA denied his waiver request. His case centers around junior college eligibility rules and his argument that the NCAA has applied those rules inconsistently. Smith has also argued that being denied another season would cost him the chance to continue his college career, along with potential NIL and revenue-sharing opportunities.
College football has already seen multiple eligibility battles spill into courtrooms, with players such as Trinidad Chambliss and Brendan Sorsby receiving legal wins that allowed them to continue pursuing another season. Those cases are not exact copies of Smith’s, but they do point to the same uncomfortable question hanging over the sport: how much authority does the NCAA actually have when eligibility decisions are increasingly being challenged, delayed, or blocked in court?
Smith's return would give the Tigers another experienced receiver in the room after he caught 24 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown in his first season at the FBS level. Before arriving at Clemson, he posted 76 catches for 934 yards and six touchdowns at Southeast Missouri.
