Yesterday was a really bad day for the Los Angeles Clippers. The NBA found the franchise guilty of salary-cap circumvention in the Kawhi Leonard case, stripped them of five first-round picks from 2029 through 2033, fined the team $30.0 million, suspended Steve Ballmer for one year, and suspended Lawrence Frank for six months. Leonard was also fined $700,000, incredibly escaping barely harmed in all of this.
The one piece of good news, if we can even call it that, is that the league didn't block Leonard's move back to the Raptors. That trade had been on hold while the investigation was happening, and with the case now finished, the deal can move forward. Toronto had agreed to send Brandon Ingram, Gradey ****** , two unprotected first-round picks, two second-round picks, and a 2027 first-round pick swap for Leonard.
Those five lost first-round picks hurt the most. The Clippers were finally getting close to controlling their own future again starting in 2029, but now they won't make a first-round selection with one of those picks until 2034, although they should get the Raptors' 2031 and 2033 picks. Still, for a team entering a rebuild, that is brutal. Tanking doesn't help much when there is basically no first-round pick waiting for you at the end of the season, since the 2027 pick swap from Toronto is the worst one among the Raptors, the Clippers, and the Thunder, and the 2028 pick goes entirely to OKC.
So if the Clippers can't rely on landing a future franchise player through the Draft, and they also can't use any of their upcoming first-round picks as trade ****** ets since they belong to other teams, they will have to get creative. There are still other ways to find young talent, from taking chances on former high picks to using cap ****** e, trades, the G League, and overlooked free agents.
With almost a decade of Draft problems ahead of them, here are five different ways the Clippers can try to survive this rebuild and find young players without waiting until 2034.

Giada De Laurentiis is trading the kitchen for the ballroom.
The cast for season 35 of Dancing with the Stars was officially announced on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and the celebrity chef is one of the 16 competitors, joining a lineup of actors, athletes, former dancers and reality stars.
The Food Network alum, 56, tells PEOPLE she was inspired by her 18-year-old daughter, Jade, to do the show.
"I've been asked several times over the years, and I think that this time I said yes because my daughter basically forced me to say yes," she admits. Charlie Theron had a surprising response to fans expecting her to discuss Tom Hardy. The actress reflected on filming Mad Max: Fury Road instead. Theron shared a sweet memory involving her daughter and costars. She then jokingly told the crowd, "Shame on you!"

The euro has been trying to recover early on Monday, but in a very lackluster fashion. I think at this point, traders are out there trying to sort out what the Friday speech actually means for forex markets when Kevin Warsh basically eliminated the idea of Federal Reserve rate cuts that many traders had been trying to price in.
As usual, the market got way ahead of itself with that. We've been seeing this for a couple of years now where the market gets excited about potential rate cuts coming out of the United States for a couple of weeks, and then reality sets in. And I think that's part of what's going on here.
So, I'm watching the euro to sell it, not to buy it. Somewhere around the 1.1620 level, if we start to see signs of exhaustion, that would be about a 50% retracement of the move from Friday; I might look for getting short there.
The British pound, I think, is probably going to be somewhat range-bound, mainly because the British pound, of course, has a higher interest rate attached to it. So, it is a little insulated from US dollar strength, and I think most of the reaction was more about the US dollar than anything else.
I wouldn't read too much into British pound weakness, because at this point in time, even if I want to buy the US dollar, I am going to short other currencies, weaker currencies.

The Cleveland Cavaliers didn't blow up anything after getting swept by the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, and I think that was the right call, because this team was already pretty close. Cleveland finished 52-30, ranked sixth in offensive rating at 119.2, and reached its first Conference Finals since 2018, so the answer wasn't starting over, it was finding better pieces around a core that still has the talent to win the East.
The front office basically doubled down on that idea during the summer. Donovan Mitchell signed a four-year, $273.0 million extension, James Harden came back on a three-year, $97.0 million deal after arriving for Darius Garland at the deadline, and the Cavaliers made their biggest outside move by landing Peyton Watson in a five-team sign-and-trade. Max Strus, Dennis Schroder, Dean Wade, and Keon Ellis are among the players gone, while Mario Hezonja also returned to the NBA after several seasons in Europe.
That leaves Cleveland with a very clear bet for 2026-27: The Big Four have to be good enough to carry most of this. There isn't another superstar coming, and they have the pieces to win, because Mitchell averaged almost 28 points last season, Harden can still run an elite offense, Mobley is entering his prime, and Allen remains one of the better centers in the East.
The problem is that we already saw this group hit a wall in the playoffs. Cleveland scored only 107.9 points per game during the postseason, Harden dropped to 19.2 points and 5.5 **** ists while shooting 29.9% from three, and the Knicks beat them by 37 points in Game 4 to finish the sweep.
This season isn't really about proving the Cavaliers are good. We already know about their talent, now they have to prove this Big Four can actually finish the job in a stacked Eastern Conference.

In two cases, the NCAA has been ordered to allow professional basketball players to return to college basketball, despite the fact they intentionally left college to go to the NBA Draft and each played in several NBA games. PetroChina reported record first-half operating results for 2026, with profit attributable to shareholders rising 22% year over year to RMB103.94 billion as the Chinese energy giant expanded across natural gas, new materials and lower-carbon businesses.
Revenue increased 5.3% to RMB1.527 trillion, while basic earnings per share reached RMB0.57. PetroChina said it was the first time its attributable profit had exceeded RMB100 billion in a half-year period.
The company's oil, gas and new energies business remained its biggest earnings contributor, generating RMB100.45 billion in operating profit during the first half.
PetroChina reported oil and gas equivalent production of 921 million barrels, domestic crude production of 393 million barrels and marketable natural gas production of 2.66 trillion cubic feet.
The company said it made six new discoveries and advanced 19 new developments during the period. It also established two large gas reserve areas in the Sichuan and Junggar basins and a major deep conventional oil reserve area at Tarim Fuman.

1) Yes, we'll get to the Stanford game, but I wanted to get to something else first. What a day yesterday for drafted Miami Hurricanes in the NFL.
NINE players were drafted by NFL teams back in April. One of Miami's best draft days in a long time.
But, despite being drafted, you still have to earn a spot on the roster. And guess what? 8 of 9 Canes made their team's 53-man roster. EIGHT! And the ninth, Anez Cooper, was placed on injured reserve designated to return after a strong preseason. So, basically all nine made it. Even CJ Daniels, a Rams 7th round pick, made the team, who is the odds-on favorite to win it all this year.

On Aug. 15, the Milwaukee Brewers had lost four of five games on the West Coast and their lead in the National League Central Division was suddenly uncomfortable.
After being swept by the San Diego Padres and splitting the first two games with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Brewers were only three games in front of the Chicago Cubs with seven games to be played between the two rivals. It appeared a legitimate race for the division ******* le in September was probable.
But the Brewers won the last two games against the Dodgers and haven't lost a series since, winning 10 of 14 games. The Cubs are 1-4 in their last five series and 5-9 overall in that stretch.
With the teams meeting at Wrigley Field on Monday, Aug. 31 to open a four-game series, the Cubs trail the Brewers by eight games. Chicago basically needs a sweep to close the gap, something it hasn't done at home against Milwaukee since 2019. The Brewers' magic number to clinch the division is 18.

Another day, another suitor for Iliman Ndiaye. In today's version, it's Tottenham Hotspur who have reached an agreement in principle with Everton for the Senegal international for a fee of about £60 million.
In his comments yesterday after Spurs sunk to their second consecutive league defeat to start the season, Roberto De Zerbi indicated that Richarlison had asked to leave the club 'many times', and now that will be allowed with a move to the Toffees accepted for about £35 million.
There had been a hue and cry when Everton had been forced to sell Richarlison quickly to Spurs a few years ago for £60m to balance the books at the end of the financial year, when his performances saving Everton from relegation demanded more. Now it looks like the Toffees are selling another forward in his prime for lower than his market value, and to add insult to injury, are overpaying for the Brazilian to return too given how his career has tailed off with injuries and the like.
As of this afternoon the Toffees appear to still be working on a loan for Jack Grealish, close to making a move for right back Kenny Tete from Fulham, and also have an interest in USMNT striker Folarin Balogun. Beto appears to be headed to Fiorentina and Adam Aznou on loan to Malaga.
This latest round of transfer rumours basically indicates that Everton are shifting into "win now" mode with adding older, Premier League-proven players. The concern will be that at the end of the year with David Moyes' contract up, the next manager could get saddled with the debt.

California's "monumental problem" with rampant fraud is about to get significantly worse, according to Republican state ******* emblyman Carl DeMaio, after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill that he warns will crack down on people investigating scammers.
Officially ******* led "Privacy for immigration support services providers," the new law creates privacy protections for immigration support service providers, employees and volunteers, including shielding their addresses and imposing penalties on those who publish their images on social media. DeMaio told Fox News Digital the bill amounts to criminalizing investigative journalism and works to "silence citizen journalists and shield taxpayer-funded organizations from public scrutiny."
"What does the Stop Nick Shirley Act do? It basically makes it illegal for a citizen journalist to document fraud of taxpayer money and post that on the internet in the form of an internet video," he said.

Somewhere between the two sits the uneasy economics of the modern US Open, where a $65 ticket with no guaranteed seat on any court can fetch more than five times that amount on the tournament's resale marketplace.
For generations the US Open has traded on its reputation as the people's slam. Take the 7 train to Queens, buy a grounds pass and spend the day milling about within a few feet of the world's best tennis players. But as the final major of the season begins in earnest on Sunday, that democratic ideal has been confronted with a basic problem: more and more of the people are being priced out.

Hamburger SV continue to pursue the signing of KRC Genk right-back Zakaria El Ouahdi as sporting director Claus Costa seeks to resolve one of the squad's most obvious remaining deficiencies before the transfer deadline. According to the Hamburger Abendblatt, HSV have already reached a basic agreement with the 24-year-old Moroccan international.

However, Strategy Inc (NASDAQ:MSTR) is not a simple leveraged Bitcoin fund. The company held 843,775 Bitcoin on July 26, sold 1,638 Bitcoin during July 27-August 2, and another 1,690 during August 3-9, leaving 840,447 Bitcoin. That position was worth approximately $57.5 billion at Wednesday's Bitcoin price, but the figure represents gross **** et value rather than value attributable to common shareholders.
Common issuance increases gross Bitcoin per share only when the Bitcoin acquired per incremental **** umed diluted share exceeds the existing ratio. Issuing above net **** et value alone is insufficient because the share denominator and use of proceeds determine the result.
