Borussia Dortmund did it the hard way today in only their second match of the season. Away to Hoffenheim, the Black and Yellows went two goals behind, leaving it all to do with thirty minutes to play. Waldemar Anton took charge, sporting the captain's armband, blasting through the Hoffenheim defense at a lax moment to nick a loose ball and square it for Serhou Guirassy, who got the comeback started. BVB would find two further goals from Fabio Silva, and an own goal created by some intelligent interplay between Silva and Nwaneri.
The defense today was… not exactly sterling. The injury to Mane unsettled the back line, and despite some bright spots specifically from Gadou in progression, there were also some calamitous errors that gave Hoffenheim control of the momentum. Anton has been given the tricky task of leading a young, inexperienced back line. Gadou and Mane are talented, but they are both really in their first seasons of top flight football. Anton needs to keep them in check and handle his defensive duties as well. It's a lot of responsibity for BVB's stand-in captain. Anton's tenacity to win the ball high up the pitch got his team back into the game, and he deserves credit for his efforts across the pitch.
An additional note on Mane. I'm worried about this kid. Two hamstring injuries in only a few professional matches point to either a more serious issue, or insufficient preparation from the physio team. Mane has looked promising in the lead up to the season, but these injuries threaten to derail his career. BVB need to get their well-paid medical staff to figure out what's going on here.
Anyone seen the midfield? I can't seem to find it.
I'm not sure if we blame Kovac here, blame the players, blame the system, but my goodness where is our central spine? Hoffenheim ran down the throat of the BVB defense for the entire first half because there seemed to be no cover in front of it. Maybe we will see more of Veerman in the weeks to come, but it's not like the dutchman is some deep-lying enforcer—he is a creator. If BVB are going to be fielding a juvenile back line for the next few weeks (they are), the midfield needs to provide some better cover.

West Brom is mourning the death of one of its former players after he collapsed on the pitch over the weekend.
Quévin Castro collapsed while playing in a friendly for Real Sport Clube, a club in a lower division of Portuguese football, against Estrela da Amadora on Saturday, Aug. 22. The Lisbon Football ******* ociation and Real Sport Clube announced on social media later that day that the 25-year-old had died.
"We are devastated to learn of the untimely passing of our former player Quevin Castro," West Brom said in a statement on social media with a photo of the midfielder holding the Premier League Cup trophy.
Castro, who is from Portugal, made his debut for West Brom's first team in 2021 during the Carabao Cup match against ******* nal and played in 2022 for the Sky Bet Championship against Swansea City. He scored a goal in West Brom's U23 Premier League Cup victory over Wolverhampton, which was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout.
West Brom, which was relegated from the EPL in 2021, paid tribute to Castro during their home match at The Hawthorns on Sunday, Aug. 23 against Burnley. The players wore black armbands and there was a celebration of life where the crowd applauded at the 25th minute to honor his age.

The Dutch centre-back, who agreed a new long-term contract earlier this month, replaces Cristian Romero after his move to Atletico Madrid last week.

Olympique de Marseille manager Bruno Genesio has revealed that the club's hierarchy ordered him to strip Pierre-Emile Højbjerg of the captaincy following the midfielder's refusal to join Newcastle United.
Højbjerg started Friday night's 2-1 friendly defeat against Atlético de Madrid at the Stade Vélodrome, but it was Timothy Weah who wore the captain's armband for the encounter.
Speaking after the match, Genesio made clear that the decision had not been his own and openly admitted that he disagreed with the move.
"It's a decision that was dictated to me by the club's management. If I want to be completely frank, and I will be, it's not a decision that I agree with. But I'm an employee, I have to comply with certain obligations. We did it," Genesio told reporters following the game.
The change comes amid tensions between Højbjerg and Marseille's hierarchy over his future at the club. As reported by RMC Sport, OM were angered by the Denmark international's decision to reject a move to Newcastle United earlier this week.

There's a chance it was just a nice birthday presenter for Thiaw but at 25-years-old he's now one of the older players of the new crop for Newcastle 2.0 and was one of the few players who finished last season with any credit. I still think there is a chance Newcastle will name a club captain, but now my eyes have been opened to the very real possibility to Malick Thiaw leading the Mags out at St. James' Park this season.

New Bayer Leverkusen coach Carles Martínez is a true football addict which didn't even stop at his wedding.
"The invitation said: Don't forgot your football boots," Martínez said in an interview with Thursday edition of daily Süddeutsche Zeitung.
"We set up a small pitch and organized matches. Five v five, for a few minutes. I was wearing a suit and tie, captain's armband - and football boots," he recalled.
Martínez, 42, said he also missed the birth of his first child in 2024 because he was in Metz with his then French club Toulouse for a match while his wife was in labour in their native Spain.

FC St. Pauli and Jackson Irvine have agreed to announce that they are going separate ways, effective immediately.
The Australian is moving to J. League side Cerezo Osaka, while the two clubs have agreed not to disclose any details of the transfer.
Irvine first signed for the Kiezkickers in the summer of 2021 and soon established himself as a key member of the team.

Yet Saturday's meeting with Sunderland now carries something far more important. Eintracht Frankfurt omitted four first-team players from their training camp in Grassau. The club announced that Ellyes Skhiri has been released for transfer talks with another club. Although they didn’t specify the name of the club, the central midfielder has been heavily linked with a return to Köln in recent weeks.
The 31-year-old had a dismal World Cup campaign with Tunisia after getting the captain’s armband ahead of the tournament. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) entered the race late but have now set up an exciting contest with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), while Rajasthan Royals (RR) are also in the fray. Pandya is a perfect fit for CSK, especially in the post-MS Dhoni era, but there is no guarantee that he will wear the captaincy armband. Somerset all-rounder Craig Overton said he could "not have asked for much more" in terms of his form in the County Championship this season.
Overton scored his third century of the campaign in the draw with Warwickshire to help Somerset move within five points of championship leaders Nottinghamshire.
The 32-year-old was wearing the captain's armband in Taunton in the absence of the injured Lewis Gregory.
"It's been a good start this year, hopefully can continue that form. I feel like the T20s haven't quite gone to plan yet but in the Championship I couldn't have asked for anything more," Overton told BBC Radio Somerset.
