While investors continue chasing artificial-intelligence stocks, value investor Seth Klarman appears to be making a very different bet.
Klarman's Baupost Group increased its position in Genuine Parts Company (NYSE: GPC) by 89% in the second quarter, ending June with 2.82 million shares worth about $332.3 million, according to its latest portfolio disclosure.
A Breakup That Could Unlock Value
Genuine Parts earlier this year announced that it plans to separate its Global Automotive and Global Industrial businesses to increase focus and shareholder value.
Bulls say the two businesses could ultimately be worth more as separate companies than they are under one corporate structure.

Hayden Panettiere's final PETA ad has been released, just days after her sudden death. The campaign, filmed only two weeks before she passed away, shows the actor confined to a bathtub to protest marine parks like SeaWorld. The campaign video now stands as a lasting tribute to her animal rights advocacy. PETA shared the ad on August 18, confirming the shoot took place shortly before Panettiere died at age 36.
The PETA ad has Panettiere making an emotional plea for dolphins and orcas held in captivity. She speaks directly to viewers while lying in a bathtub, visually representing the cramped tanks marine mammals endure at entertainment parks. "Can you imagine their frustration, their trauma, their depression? All that is important and crucial for their well-being is ripped away … We can end this. You and me," Panettiere says in the clip.
She continues describing what ocean life offers these animals: family bonds, deep dives to escape heat, and rain on their backs. All of that disappears when they are placed in small tanks. The campaign also includes a photo ad featuring Panettiere in the bathtub. Behind-the-scenes from that shoot are also featured in the released video.
PETA accompanied the video with a statement honoring her commitment. "Hayden Panettiere became a household name playing a hero on TV, but in real life she was a hero to animals," the organization wrote. They urged supporters to honor her memory by refusing to buy tickets to marine parks.
Panettiere's father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed his daughter's passing on Sunday. Authorities reported no signs of foul play. The actor left behind a career spanning television, film, and video games, along with a legacy of vocal animal advocacy that this final PETA ad now preserves.

For nearly two decades, September has usually meant one thing for Apple investors: a new iPhone cycle.
That pattern may be about to change.
Apple (AAPL) is reportedly planning to launch the iPhone 18 Pro series this fall and delay the standard iPhone 18 to the first quarter of 2027, according to supplier commentary reported by Economic Daily News and The Verge. The more affordable iPhone 18e and a new iPhone Air are also expected to launch around early 2027.
That would be a big change for a product franchise that had a record $54.25 billion of revenue in Apple's latest quarter, up 21.7% from a year earlier. Total company revenue was up 16% to $109.4 billion.
That reason appears to be more than just product marketing.

1117 ET – A weaker U.S. dollar is giving gold futures support. The dollar movement appears to be a reflection of recent softer-than-expected macroeconomic reports. “We have had a couple of soft inflation reports along with weaker employment and retail sales data and this has led to more dovish expectations of the Fed with important ******* et price impacts,” says Stephen Coltman of 21shares in a note. As part of the movement gold is now “showing signs of life,” says Coltman. Most-active gold futures are up 0.9% to $4,474.50 a troy ounce. (kirk.maltaiswsj.com)
0821 GMT – Gold rises as investors pare back bets of an imminent interest-rate hike. In morning European trade, New York gold futures are 0.5% higher at $4,458.20 a troy ounce. The precious metal continues a two-week advance after weaker U.S. retails sales and softer consumer sentiment weighed on the dollar and reduced expectations of a rate hike, MUFG’s Soojin Kim writes. Higher interest rates make non-yielding ******* ets like gold less attractive. “Wednesday’s Fed minutes, U.S. economic data and developments around Hormuz will be key drivers of gold, particularly through their impact on rate expectations,” she adds.(adam.whittakerwsj.com)

The dollar index (DXY00) fell to a 2.25-month low today and is down by -0.18%. The dollar extended last week's losses today after a raft of weaker-than-expected US economic news dialed back expectations of tighter Fed policy. The chance of a Fed rate hike next month has dropped to 31% from about 75% in late July.
The dollar is also being undercut by reduced safe-haven demand as President Trump appears to have given up on plans for any new major military attack on Iran for the time being, favoring economic pressure instead. Treasury Secretary Bessent said last Friday that the administration will soon announce unprecedented economic measures against Iran that "have never been seen in the history of economic isolation of a country." Yet, the military conflict continues as there were reports that Iran attacked two Abu Dhabi oil vessels in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday night.

Although Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) easily ranks among the most relevant names in the market today, the journey forward hasn't always been smooth. Yes, TSM stock is up over 40% on a year-to-date basis, a byproduct of its foundry business feeding virtually the entire global supply of advanced artificial-intelligence hardware. However, the ticker happens to be down roughly 11% since the end of June.
Still, many investors are optimistic about TSM stock for the underlying fundamentals, which may very well enjoy permanent relevance. Notably, despite the near-term choppiness, the Barchart Technical Opinion indicator rates TSM as a 72% Strong Buy. While there might be some turbulence, the overall picture appears enticing.

João Palhinha's future at Bayern Munich continues to move toward a potential exit, with Aston Villa reportedly emerging as the midfielder's priority destination.
According to GiveMeSport's Ben Jacobs (via iMiaSanMia), Aston Villa remains in talks with Bayern Munich over a deal for Palhinha. Discussions have continued despite Bayern Munich initially proposing a loan arrangement without any commitment to make the transfer permanent.
However, Villa now understands that Bayern Munich are looking for greater certainty. The club will either have to complete a permanent transfer this summer or agree to an obligation to buy as part of a loan deal.
Bayern Munich is reportedly asking for around €30 million for Palhinha, although there are suggestions that a deal could potentially be negotiated for slightly less than that figure. The situation could come down to how Aston Villa structures the deal. A loan with an obligation-to-buy could give Aston Villa more flexibility in the short term while providing Bayern Munich with the permanent transfer they are seeking.
Palhinha's time in Munich has not developed as many expected when Bayern Munich signed him from Fulham. With Bayern Munich looking to shape the squad for the 2026/27 season, his departure increasingly appears possible.

For the Buss siblings, it remains to be seen how they interpret the language of the trust. It appears they want to cash out on their stakes in the franchise, and they could potentially seek a court order to remove their sister as a co‑trustee, such as by arguing the trust permits a vote to that effect or permits a removal under certain circumstances. Trusts can also contain language that allows for reconfiguration in the event of conflicts of interest and other circumstances that touch on fiduciary duties. Whether the siblings could offer a viable argument is unknown, but the fact that they could try is the more salient point given that it could complicate the sale.

Okay…was that really necessary?
When Bayern Munich first announced an additional preseason friendly, the logic made sense. Bayern's heavy international complement had a busy summer and arrived late to season preparations after the Men's World Cup; head coach Vincent Kompany wanted more time for players who could not appear in the Asia tour.
However the way the scheduled ended up, Bayern handed itself some early match congestion before the season even began. Tuesday's match at FC Heidenheim comes just three days on the heel of the previous contest, an intense Telekom Cup bout against RB Leipzig. And it is now just four days to the next match, the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup against Borussia Dortmund.
The Leipzig match already had all the makings of a preview of in-season intensity — without any of the stakes. The Supercup, likewise, is an official in season competition — but not one with the weight of the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, or Champions League. These two matches together were a good way to ease into the season. So why add a third in between them?
Against Heidenheim, Bayern's big stars played…well, some of them, and not a lot. Harry Kane and Michael Olise had just 30 minutes; the likes of Luis Díaz, Ismael Saibari, and Jamal Musiala already played at the weekend. Kane's spoken already on his uncertainty of being ready for a full 90' at the Supercup, so his cameo Tuesday appears to have done little other than reduce his recovery time.

Real Madrid rarely do anything quietly, and even in a week without a blockbuster arrival, there is still plenty to read between the lines at the Bernabeu. According to The Athletic, the most important development concerns Endrick, the Brazilian forward whose immediate future has been the subject of considerable chatter. For now, that noise can be parked. The teenager is staying.
That alone says much about the current mood inside Madrid. A club of this scale is always planning for today and tomorrow, weighing instant need against long-term stardom. In Endrick, they have one of world football's most intriguing young attacking talents, and the decision to keep him points to a coaching staff that still sees practical use for him this season, not merely future promise.
The report states: "The most notable news was the decision that Brazilian striker Endrick will stay, despite rumours linking him with a loan move to Aston Villa and Roma." In the churn of summer speculation, clarity matters. This is clear. Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho and the player are aligned, at least for the opening phase of the campaign.
There is a tactical thread running through this decision. The Athletic reports that "The Portuguese coach does not see Bernardo Silva or Federico Valverde as regular performers on the right wing, so in addition to Yan Diomande and Brahim Diaz, he wants Endrick as an option for that position as well as at centre-forward." That is revealing in several ways.
First, Mourinho appears to be defining roles firmly. Valverde's vast gifts remain more persuasive in central and transitional zones, where his running power and authority can tilt matches. Bernardo Silva, if used in wider areas, would clearly be viewed more as a situational solution than a weekly answer. Endrick, then, becomes more than a young striker waiting politely in line. He becomes squad architecture.

Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston appears to have avoided a serious injury.
Johnston, who limped off the field during Tuesday's joint practice against the49ers, appears to be just fine.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Johnston is not expected to miss much time, if any, after exiting practice with a lower body injury.
The 24-year-old did not finish the practice session; however, he may be available for the team's next practice, which won't be until this weekend after their Thursday night game against the 49ers.
Johnston is heading into his fourth year in the league. He is set to enter the final year of his four-year rookie deal, and it will be his biggest season yet. Availability, or lack thereof, is far from the issue with Johnston, as he's missed only five of a potential 51 games played in his first three seasons in the league.

Former Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold appears to be headed for the Seattle Seahawks, but there are a few roadblocks in the way before the former first-round pick can see the field.
Arnold and the Seahawks have agreed upon a contract, but Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said recently that they're working through some things before they officially sign him.
"We're working through that and when's the best time for him to come in, but we have an agreement with him and we'll see," Macdonald said."But I just really don't know what, you know, how we're gonna do it."
Arnold is currently facing eight felony charges from an incident in Florida involving an alleged armed robbery and kidnapping. According to the latest reports, his next court date in the trial is Oct. 5.
According to the latest report from Ian Rapoport, this process is expected to move slowly for the Seahawks, and "it will take a while" before they sign Arnold. One huge blockade in this process is the fact that Arnold, according to Rapoport, will go on the Commissioner Exempt List once he signs with a team.

STATE COLLEGE — The scar runs maybe nine inches down the middle of his chest.
Penn State football quarterback Alex Manske says, truly enough, that he doesn't think about it much. Not when he's running and throwing, like he was during another steamy morning preseason practice this week.
Not when he's constantly studying film and learning from former Iowa State teammate and starting QB Rocco Becht, and his trusted head coach Matt Campbell and offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser.
No matter that the uber-talented redshirt freshman underwent a startling open-heart surgery just five months ago — and appears to be fully recovered and ready for the 2026 season in a couple of weeks, stunningly enough.
His potentially life-altering defect, Manske said, was found during a Penn State-mandated echocardiogram that he and fellow newcomers to the program underwent this past winter. He said he was not aware of any symptoms from his dilated aortic root issue − where the section of the aorta that connects to the heart widens abnormally, increasing the risk of a life-threatening tear or rupture.

Pre-season provided a real opportunity for some Real Madrid players to impress Jose Mourinho, and it looks like some stars have caught the manager's eye.
The appointment of a new manager always brings with it a clean slate, especially for players like Dean Huijsen.
The 21-year-old Spanish ace started last season well under Xabi Alonso, but the managerial changes saw his form drop.
By the end of the campaign, he had been dropped from the starting XI, looked a shadow of his former self and was left out of Spain's World Cup tournament.
Huijsen, to his credit, appears to have played his way into Mourinho's starting plans after an impressive pre-season showing.

Philadelphia Union set to sign USMNT defender from Ligue 1 side originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The last offseason saw the Philadelphia Union dump several former players to other teams in the league, including their leading goalscorer from the prior season, Tai Baribo, to DC United; Jakob Glesnes to the LA Galaxy; and Kai Wagner to EFL Championship side Birmingham City. Simply put, some of the bigger names for the clubs all went in a single window.
This fleet of departures wasn't helped out at all after the team failed to make any meaningful signings in the transfer market, which could've been a key contributing factor in why the team went from the top team in the Eastern Conference last season to dead last heading into the World Cup break earlier in the Summer.
Just as the team appears to be getting itself together, chaining some crucial wins in the MLS and shooting up the table in a last-ditch playoff push, the front office has been busy adding to the roster, mainly their defense.
According to a recent report by The Athletic's Tom Bogert, Philadelphia is nearing a deal to bring Mark McKenzie back to Subaru Park, six years after his departure from the MLS, with the deal being close to $2.5 million.

The Chicago Bears' ongoing battle at left tackle took an interesting turn ahead of Tuesday's practice, where head coach Ben Johnson announced that it would be Braxton Jones working with the first-team offense.
Jones suffered a minor knee injury during practice on Aug. 6, and he's making his return to team activities on Tuesday. With Jones sidelined, the Bears had been rotating Kiran Amegadjie and Jedrick Wills Jr. with the starters. Johnson said that both Amegadjie and Wills will get some looks at right tackle while Theo Benedet, who's practiced exclusively at right tackle, will finally see some action on the left side with the second-team offense Tuesday.
Another interesting development is the return of Ozzy Trapilo, who'd established himself as the starting left tackle before suffering a ruptured patellar tendon during the team's wild-card playoff win back in January. Trapilo, who was expected to miss most of the 2026 season, returned in record time just seven months after what some initially believed might be a career-altering injury.
There's no word on when Trapilo could return to practice in full and factor into the starting left tackle competition. According to Johnson, Trapilo "has his own timeline."
From what we've learned this summer, it appears to be Jones' job to lose. Before his injury, Jones had been receiving a bulk of first-team reps, and that's expected to continue with him back in action. When Trapilo is ready to compete for the starting role, that's when things should get interesting.

Eric Bieniemy said on Tuesday that his wife Mia is "doing great" and on the "road to recovery" three weeks after she was shot at the couple's Virginia home.
The Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator was meeting with reporters for the first time since Mia Bienemy suffered gunshot wounds to her arm and chest on July 26.
"It's one of the main reasons why I'm back here, because of her recovery," Bieniemy said. "She's truly a soldier. She's a saint and it's been incredible to watch. But I know I was driving her and a bunch of my family members crazy in the house, so she was like 'you have my blessing to leave.' It was time to get back."
The couple's son, 27-year-old Elijah Bieniemy, was arrested on charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. In a court filing, his lawyer said he "appears to suffer from significant mental health issues" and "does not appear able to **** ist in his own defense at the present time."
Bienemy, who had been at training camp when the news broke about the shooting, said that once the situation settled at home he was able to watch a livestream of Chiefs practices to stay connected to the team.

NFL Insider Jordan Schultz has reported that the Indianapolis Colts will sign WR Keenan Allen on a one-year deal.
Allen's deal will be worth up to $8.32 million for the 6x Pro Bowl wide receiver. The move will reunite Allen with Colts head coach Shane Steichen from their days with the Chargers.
A 2013 third-round selection in the NFL Draft, Allen played for the Chargers for 11 seasons, the Chicago Bears for one year, then back to the Chargers for the 2025 season.
With Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce being on the PUP list (Physically Unable to Perform) with an ankle injury, it appears that he may join camp as WR2 behind Josh Downs.
For his career, Allen has 1,055 regular-season catches for 12,051 yards and 70 touchdowns.

La Quinta High School has never been shy about running the football, and while this year the Blackhawks' offense should be more balanced there's reason to believe that the run-first mentality will be alive and well.
That's largely because of the depth La Quinta will have at running back, but also because of senior Colton LaCrone and his ability to pound the ball like perhaps no one else in the Coachella Valley.
LaCrone ran for 701 yards and four touchdowns in five league games last season, averaging 113.6 yards per game. It's because of his potential for a spectacular encore that he lands at No. 3 on The Desert Sun's 2026 Elite 11 countdown.
LaCrone, who stands about 5-foot-10 and weighs just shy of 200 pounds, is a bruising tailback who'll also help lead the Blackhawks' defense from the linebacker spot. He was an all-league and All-CIF-SS selection last season in helping La Quita back to the playoffs.
It could be argued that La Quinta will be even better this season, despite some key losses on the roster. The receiving crops appears to be deeper and arguably faster and more talented, collectively, the offensive line looking solid and LaCrone is perhaps the top running back in the valley.

Heat 'desperate' to sign $298M generational shooter, ex-Warriors future Hall of Famer, 5x All-Star originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Miami Heat have had a disappointing offseason, to say the least, even after adding a player like Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster deal. The free-agency portion of the summer, however, has gone about as poorly as it possibly could have.
After missing out on several targets, Miami is now heavily interested in Klay Thompson. The Heat have made it clear that bringing in the four-time NBA champion is a major priority.
"If the Mavericks don't find a trade for Klay Thompson, his representation will likely request a buyout. There appears to be mutual interest between the Heat and Thompson, who could maximize his shooting alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, plus potentially LeBron James," NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
As of now, Thompson is believed to be interested in two potential destinations: the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami. Both teams could be attractive options for the veteran as he considers his next destination.

John Elkann hopes for a great season for Juventus, but the Bianconeri owner also recognises that the team is being rebuilt and that patience is required.
The men at the Allianz Stadium have not won the league since 2020, and they have gone through several managers over the last six seasons in their efforts to return to the top.
Along the way, Juventus have made several mistakes, which is why it appears they have had to begin another rebuild every summer. The men at the Allianz Stadium have continued to show that they can improve on their previous efforts as they attempt to restore the club to its former position.
Luciano Spalletti has been given the opportunity to win his second Scudetto crown as a coach, and the club is backing him with as many quality players as possible.
Juventus have some of the best players in the league within their squad, and they expect a better end to the season than they enjoyed last term. Spalletti knows that much more is expected from him and his team, and the manager will feel pressure to meet those expectations.

Aston Villa pick up talks for Bayern Munich midfielder originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Just a few days away from the start of the Premier League campaign, Aston Villa are still searching the transfer market to help bolster their squad, after two of their bigger-name players departed earlier in the Summer. One of their key forwards, Morgan Rogers, left Villa Park for a move to Stamford Bridge, with that deal being worth £117 million.
The second departure would be that of Youri Tielemans, who made his way to Manchester United for a fee that left some people scratching their heads: £35 million, but it's worth noting that the fee was accepted in compliance with a release clause in the Belgian's contract. Tielemans leaving the West Midlands club has left Unai Emery with a bit of a hole in his midfield depth, but it appears that they've started to look towards Germany once again for Bayern Munich's Joao Palhinha.
As reported by The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell, Aston Villa have opted to resume negotiations with the German champions over the Portuguese midfielder, as they ideally are looking for a loan with an option to buy at the end of the term.
"Aston Villa have resumed talks to sign Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich. Villa still believe they can finalise an agreement for the midfielder, despite interest from Newcastle United, seeking a season-long loan with an option," writes Tanswell.

Dealing with injuries up front, the Indianapolis Colts reportedly worked out a few offensive linemen on Monday.
According to Jake Arthur, the Colts have interior offensive lineman Will Hernandez in for a workout, along with offensive tackles D'Ante Smith and Trey Wedig.
Arthur adds that tackles Luke Tenuta and Nolan Rucci are dealing with injuries. Tenuta appears to be the first tackle option off the bench for the Colts, while Rucci, a UDFA, is fighting for a roster spot.
The top tackle options off the bench at the moment are Blake Freeland and Bayron Matos.
A second-round pick in 2018, Hernandez is quite experienced, playing in 104 career games while making 98 starts. He's played both guard positions.

The price of the brick keeps going up. According to the Times of London, Tottenham Hotspur's pursuit of Brazilian winger Savinho could cost them as much as £85m. This particular transfer saga has now gone on for a year after Spurs expressed their interest and came close to signing Savinho last summer before City pulled the plug on negotiations.
The new £85m figure comes as almost a throwaway line in an article about City's overall transfer business and their continued attempt to refresh the squad under new head coach Enzo Maresco.
City are in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over the potential sale of Savinho for £85million while Nico González's situation is being monitored by several interested parties. The club also lost two of their top earners over the summer after Bernardo Silva and John Stones left for Real Madrid and Inter Milan respectively on free transfers.
I swear I can remember a time when the price for Savinho was rumored to be around £60m-65m. The delay in coming to an agreement appears to be mostly on the City side of negotiations — there are reports that Maresca has been delaying deciding whether Savinho is in his plans or not; meanwhile it's been clear for a while now that Savinho is of great interest to Spurs and is one of Roberto De Zerbi's top transfer targets, which no doubt has inflated the price. (This is why you don't tip your hand in negotiations.)
Meanwhile, rarely has a player made it so clear that he wants to leave and join Tottenham Hotspur. His social media has included commenting on and befriending numerous Spurs player accounts, and he's refused to train a couple of times now (though City has attributed this, plus his absence from the Community Shield squad, as "illness).

The mystery surrounding Jameson Williams' unexpected absence from Detroit Lions practice did not last long, and the news appears to be about as good as Detroit could have hoped.
Lions coach Dan Campbell revealed Monday evening that Williams is dealing with a shoulder injury, but he made it clear the issue is not considered serious.
"He's got a little shoulder (injury), he's good to go, though," Campbell said Monday.
Williams was not expected to participate in Monday night's practice, and Campbell did not provide a specific timetable for his return. Still, his description of the injury should ease some of the concern that developed when Williams unexpectedly missed Sunday's padded session.
Any injury involving Williams is going to get the attention of Lions fans considering how important he has become to Detroit's offense.
