The hope is that preseason action can provide some answers to pressing questions that a team may have. But for the Indianapolis Colts, Saturday's performance against Atlanta only raised more questions around three specific position groups.
The depth of the cornerback, defensive end, and offensive line units was brought into focus during that game and, if called upon this upcoming season, could be a potential problem for the Colts.
Whether or not those around Laiatu Latu can generate steady pressure this season has been an unknown all offseason. The preseason hasn't provided many answers either. The combination of Caden Curry, George Gumbs, Micheal Clemons, and Jaylahn Tuimoloau played a total of 58 pass rush snaps and generated three pressures. Tuimoloau and Clemons didn't have any.
Laiatu Latu will lead the way and Arden Key will start opposite of him, but defensive end is a heavily rotated position with four or five players seeing steady snaps. Can the Colts get consistent production from the rotational defenders at this position?
The depth of this unit was thought to be quite good during the offseason, but the preseason has proved otherwise. The trio of Mekhi Blackmon, Rob Carter Jr., and Johnathan Edwards all took their lumps on Saturday and throughout the preseason.

It is no surprise that Williams' Sainz has expressed surprise over media publishing news aftermath a grand prix. Pre-summer break, the Spaniard had a tangle with McLaren's Oscar Piastri due to blue flag system failure at Hungaroring, which affected the whole field.

He highlighted how difficult it is for a F1 driver after a session, especially a race, when they have to speak to several media answering the same thing again and again. By the end of it, they are tired answering the same answers and sometime it comes out in a different way they intended.

He opened the night completing six of his first seven attempts for 65 yards, a 9.3 yards-per-reception average that reflected a cleaner, more decisive version of the quarterback who struggled for stretches against the Saints in Week 1. His lone early incompletion was an Ameer Abdullah drop on second down that would have been a touchdown, and he rushed for a first down on the scoring drive.
Mullens found a real working partnership with rookies Josh Cameron and CJ Williams throughout the first half, distributing the ball efficiently and giving both rookies meaningful opportunities. Nick's improvement from Week 1 to Week 2 in early-drive efficiency was notable: zero turnovers, red-zone efficiency, and, most importantly, leading the offense against much of the Panthers' starting defense resulted in a quality bounce-back outcome.

If and when Ketel Marte returns to the Arizona Diamondbacks from the injured list, he will apparently have some work to do to regain the trust and support of manager Torey Lovullo after his unexplained absence from the team earlier in the week.
The second baseman was placed on the 10-day IL on Thursday with left knee inflammation. But before that move was made, the D-Backs put the three-time All-Star on the restricted list when he didn't show up for Monday's game versus the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
"I was hurt, I was clearly hurt," Lovullo told reporters on Friday, via Griffin S. DeMarrais. "Once I saw what was unfolding, I became extremely frustrated. I felt betrayed."
Marte's absence was explained as a personal issue, but he returned to Arizona on Tuesday to undergo an MRI on his left knee. But it still wasn't clear if the knee soreness was the reason for his absence.
General manager Mike Hazen and team president Derrick Hall met with Marte on Thursday, but still apparently received few answers as to what led to his behavior. Hall said the team was withholding judgment on the situation until they received more clarification as to what was happening.

Recent weeks on the NFL media rights beat have marked a changing of the tides.
Last September, the NFL publicly acknowledged for the first time that it would seek to strike early renewals with its broadcast partners several years prior to the 2029-30 season, when it has the contractual option to exit most of its agreements. The goal for the league was simple: negotiate higher rights fees now and, in return, remove the exit option at the end of the decade, allowing its partners to guarantee themselves NFL inventory well into the 2030s.
At first, it looked as if new deals were inevitable. After all, NFL programming is borderline existential to legacy broadcast networks like CBS, Fox, and NBC, all of which still rely on lucrative retransmission fees from distributors and local affiliates to fund their businesses. But then, things began to change. The NFL started facing pressure from all corners of Washington. Congress, the FCC, the DOJ, and others all started scrutinizing the shift of live sports off of linear television and onto streaming services. Those roadblocks seemingly bought league partners enough time to where no new deals were finalized prior to the 2026-27 season, as the NFL reportedly wanted.
Now, any early deals would only grant the NFL three additional seasons at higher rights fees (assuming it would otherwise exercise its opt-out clause at the end of the decade). And it seems like the league's broadcast partners are starting to sense they have a bit of leverage to hold out without risk of losing the NFL following the 2029-30 season.
During a recent earnings call, Fox Corporation CEO Lachlan Murdoch outright said his network won't negotiate early, instead saying Fox will negotiate with the NFL on a normal cadence around the 2029-30 timeline. Further reporting suggested that negotiations between CBS and the NFL were "on hold" amid Paramount's ongoing effort to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. And while CBS Sports president David Berson did not outright rule out early negotiations when speaking with Awful Announcing last week, the undertones of his answers suggested nothing was imminent between the two sides.

The Washington Commanders are entering the 2026 season with a chip on their shoulder. General manager Adam Peters revamped the Commanders' defense, and while he didn't surround Jayden Daniels with a ton of offensive talent, signing Stefon Diggs during training camp gave the offense a huge boost. There are still questions and unknowns about this team, but they are ready to prove to the NFL that they are for real.
Former Dallas Cowboys and current Green Bay Packers linebacker Micah Parsons was asked to rank the teams in his former division, and his answers are very much in line with most NFL ******* ysts and reporters.
After naming the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys as numbers one and two, respectively, Parsons says, "At number three, I think this is going to be the hard one, but the Washington Commanders, they proved it. They went to the NFC Championship; they added talent. I think this team can be the real deal. I don't know if they can handle the haymakers like the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, but time will tell."
The New York Giants were obviously in the fourth spot in the NFC East, but Parsons is essentially saying all the same things that most ******* ysts say. The clear-cut leaders in the NFC East (as of now) appear to be the Eagles and Cowboys, in that order. Most ******* ysts and reporters have the Commanders and Giants at three and four, also in that order, although there are always a few outliers that have a different perspective.
For the Commanders, though, this is just more of the same. Someone else not truly believing in them. Someone else not taking a chance on them. As a former member of the NFC East as part of the Cowboys' defense, Parsons knows this division better than most. It hasn't always been tightly competitive, but this year that might be different. Despite the majority of ******* ysts and reporters citing this same order in rankings, the competition in the NFC East is far more fierce than a simple ranking can show.

BOSTON (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said he has been told that Ketel Marte traveled back to Phoenix for tests on his left knee and was a bit surprised at the lack of communication with the All-Star second baseman.
Asked if he thought Marte would play for Arizona again this year, Lovullo said he hoped so. A three-time All-Star, Marte is hitting .249 with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs over 118 games this season.
"We need him," Lovullo said before Tuesday's game against the Red Sox. "He's one of the best players in the National League as far as I'm concerned."
Arizona placed the 32-year-old Marte on the restricted list Monday, the second time in as many seasons the D-backs have done so.
Marte failed to show up for Arizona's 11-1 loss at Boston on Monday night in what Lovullo said was a crazy day as Marte deals with a personal issue. Lovullo said he spoke to Marte on Monday trying to find out what was going on without getting any answers.

"It's been a crazy day. All I know is that he's dealing with a personal issue — we're just trying to figure that out," Lovullo told reporters following the Diamondbacks' 11-1 loss to the Red Sox. "He didn't show up today and he was put on the restricted list. That's as much as I know right now. I'm sure in time we'll start to uncover some information."
Lovullo said he spoke to Marte Monday morning and afternoon trying to find out what was going on, but didn't get any answers.
"There was very little coming back," Lovullo said.

Saturday's game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs brought answers and left us with some significant questions.
There remain two exhibition games to collect information ahead of the page turning to the regular season. If searching for answers to the leftover burning questions, these are the areas I would start:
Despite watching Xavier Smith quite literally fumble away the NFC Championship game last season, he returns as LA's primary punt returner. The Rams had all offseason to either bring in competition or consider alternatives. Instead, they seem ready to run it back with Smith.
But why? Smith brings little upside to the return role, even if he did break a longer return for one of the most important plays in Saturday's game in KC. Can the Rams maximize a roster spot by identifying a player who can contribute more as a returner and elsewhere?
I'd start with receiver Brennan Presley, who played well in the 2025 exhibition games and then led the Rams in receiving yards against the Chiefs. Presley has a similarly sized frame and close skillset to Smith. He seems to be a more productive receiver and the team risks nothing by experimenting with him as a punt returner. Presley already returned kicks in the preseason opener. Push his limits and see what he is capable of.

While Jets running back Breece Hall exited practice early on Monday, it doesn't sound like he suffered a significant injury.
Head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters in his press conference that Hall suffered a strained groin.
"I don't think it was a big deal, but I want to make sure I get the evaluation on that," Glenn said, via SNY. "The one good thing about our players, they're honest with their injuries. And if they can go, they can go. But we will try to be precautionary with a lot of those, to make sure that we do the right things."
Glenn added Hall will undergo imaging tests to ensure the Jets have the right answers on his injury.
Hall played in New York's first preseason game against Tampa Bay, registering four carries for 16 yards.

The Miami Dolphins' first preseason game against the Washington Commanders was a mixed bag, leaving me concerned about our overall roster depth despite solid performances from the starters. The opening drive was a standout, featuring impressive play from Malik Willis, De'Von Achane, and Caleb Douglas, highlighted by Douglas's spectacular one-handed catch despite defensive pass interference. I was also encouraged to see guard Jonah Savaiinaea finally showing the development we hoped for when he was drafted last year. Unfortunately, the game lost momentum once the backups entered, with the offense looking putrid and the defense not faring much better for the remainder of the game. But what about what you thought?

The Baltimore Ravens have spent much of training camp evaluating young talent, and as the preseason begins, Jesse Minter appears ready to take the next step. The first-year head coach made that much clear when discussing first-round pick Olaivavega Ioane, who is expected to see action in Baltimore's preseason opener.
Speaking after Thursday's practice, Minter indicated he has no issue allowing the rookie to gain valuable game experience despite his projected role as the Ravens' starting right guard. "I'd be comfortable getting him just a little bit of game action and getting his feet wet." The comment may have centered on Ioane, but it also offered insight into how Minter plans to approach Baltimore's rookie class as a whole.
This isn't a 2026 draft class lacking intrigue. Ioane enters the season expected to play a major role along the offensive line. Third-round receiver Ja'Kobi Lane has become one of training camp's biggest stories. Fourth-round receiver Elijah Sarratt continues stacking productive practices. Several young defensive backs have also taken advantage of increased opportunities throughout camp.
The Ravens know practice reps only reveal so much. At some point, players have to perform under game conditions. That's especially true for a coaching staff still learning which young players can be trusted when the games begin to count. Preseason football provides those answers. Baltimore's rookies have earned a closer look, and the Saturday night preseason opener vs. the Eagles will allow them some opportunities.
One of the themes of training camp has been Minter's willingness to reward performance. The Ravens have consistently emphasized competition, and several rookies have responded by forcing their way into conversations about future roles. Now comes the next phase of the evaluation process.

Later that same evening, Veen was indeed called up.
Then, on Tuesday, we asked once again who the Rockies would call up but changed the answers to reflect Veen's promotion.
35% voted that Adael Amador would be called up next.
As fate would have it, Kyle Karros unfortunately suffered a concussion during Tuesday's game after a nasty collision with Ezequiel Tovar, which forced the Rockies to make another roster move. This time, Amador was indeed called up to take his place.

It's hard to toss a rookie onto the field with an entire roster's worth of NFL veterans and have them emerge looking like the best player out of the bunch. But that's reportedly been the case for New York Jets defensive end David Bailey this preseason, and it continued on Tuesday.
Zack Rosenblatt, who serves as a senior writer with The Athletic covering the New York Jets and the NFL at large, was in attendance at the joint practice session between the Jets and Buccaneers on Tuesday and reported that "there's an argument" that Bailey was the best player on the field across both teams. He also showered Bailey with some lofty praise after watching him throughout the preseason so far.
"I've been covering the Jets for five seasons, and the NFL for nine. In that time I'm not sure I've seen a rookie that was appointment viewing quite like Bailey," reported Rosenblatt.
Bailey was the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft after being named a unanimous All-American and the Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year during his senior season at Texas Tech in 2025. He recorded 52 tackles (19.5 TFL), 14.5 sacks, three pass deflections, and three forced fumbles while anchoring a Red Raiders defense that made a run to the College Football Playoff.
For a Jets team that needs answers fast in Aaron Glenn's second season in charge of the program, a player of Bailey's caliber could go a long way in helping the team get turned around from their troubles last season. And early in camp, he could live up to that hype and make a major impact as a rookie. And if Rosenblatt is correct, Bailey might not just make an outsized impact, but end up being one of the best rookies we've seen this decade in the NFL.

Boston managed only three runs in Tuesday night's 5-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, extending its losing streak to four games. The Red Sox have scored three runs or fewer in each defeat, turning one of baseball's hottest lineups into a group suddenly searching for answers.
It is Boston's longest losing streak since it dropped four consecutive games from June 7-10. The Red Sox fell to 64-55 and now sit 8.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. They also have lost the first two games of their four-game series against a Toronto club that entered Tuesday well below .500.

In case you weren't already aware, Michigan State tennis has become a bit of a powerhouse program in the Big Ten over the last few years. A lot of that was due to the efforts of star players like Ozan Baris, but a lot of the credit also needs to be given to head coach Harry Jadun, a former MSU tennis standout in his own right who took over the program at 28 years old and just led the Spartans to a Big Ten ******* le in what will be his final season as head coach.
In a fantastic interview with Spartans Illustrated's David Harns, which is free to read and something I'd urge our readers to check out, Jadun gave some extraordinary, insightful answers about his career at MSU, this past season, and his decision to leave the profession after such a successful season. Perhaps most interesting in the interview were his candid comments about former Michigan State athletic director J Batt, who left MSU this summer for Kentucky after a very short two-year stint.
As someone who is no longer working for the university, Jadun gave some comments about Batt that were likely more candid than we should expect to hear from other names still around the university, and it was extremely refreshing.
"He never was a Spartan," Jadun said in the interview. "Coach Izzo says, 'Do right by people.' Coach Izzo and Coach Dantonio embody what it means to be a Spartan. Batt was not."

WASHINGTON, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Two Democratic senators are demanding answers from two Belgian firms about an 18-carat gold ring encrusted with 321 diamonds that was ‌given to U.S. President Donald Trump weeks before the U.S. exempted Europe's diamond industry ‌from new tariffs.
Here are some details:
• In an August 10 letter to the Antwerp World Diamond Centre and David Gotlib Luxury Cufflinks, Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut warned that the gift raised serious legal questions under U.S. federal bribery law and could result in criminal penalties for the companies.
• "At best, your (gift to) ... President Trump amidst high-stakes tariff decisions creates the glaring appearance of impropriety. ‌At worst, it reinforces that foreign ⁠corporate special interests can … buy lucrative tariff exemptions simply by showering President Trump with shiny gifts," they wrote in the letter.

Brooke Shields showed that a little gray hair and a few wrinkles are nothing to be embarrassed about as she took part in the internet's "bully" trend.
The 61-year-old actress joined her daughter Grier Henchy for a playful TikTok challenge on August 8 that showed her being mockingly insulted to see how she would respond.
Rather than getting defensive, Shields responded to each jab with quick-witted answers that showed just how comfortable she is in her own skin.
"OK, I'm going to insult you like a bully, and you need to tell me how you would respond," Henchy, 20, told her mom in the video.
She then playfully attacked her by telling her she had a lot of grey hair, but Shields replied it was "a sign of maturity".
