The stock market saw solid gains for the major indexes, rebounding off their 21-day moving averages, though small caps fell slightly toward their 50-day line. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh leaned hawkish in his Jackson Hole speech, and markets generally seemed to like it. Nvidia (NVDA) surged on booming earnings and blowout guidance, but many chip and AI hardware plays struggled. Negative earnings reactions to Marvell (MRVL) and Everpure (P) didn't help. Meanwhile, Salesforce (CRM), CrowdStrike (CRWD), Okta (OKTA) and Elastic (ESTC) were big software earnings winners, fueling a bisector move. Youth apparel retailer Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) skyrocketed while ****** 's Sporting Goods (DKS) dived.
The major indexes rose solidly off their 21-day moving averages, not far from record highs, though small caps retreated toward their 50-day line. Fed Chief Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole speech got a generally positive reaction. Nvidia (NVDA), Salesforce (CRM), CrowdStrike (CRWD), Okta (OKTA), Elastic (ESTC) and Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) were among the notable earnings winners. Crude oil prices and the 10-year Treasury yield fell, though they came off weekly lows.
Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh, coming off his July 29 news conference that left Wall Street doubting his inflation-fighting credibility, turned the page with Friday's address at the annual Jackson Hole, Wyo., monetary policy conference. Warsh said his perception is that the economy has strengthened, allowing the Fed to focus on achieving its 2% inflation target. Citing strong business capital spending and strong profit growth, with the exceptions of housing and agriculture, Warsh said he would be "hard pressed to describe broad financial conditions as restrictive." Reaction to his address lifted odds of a Sept. 16 Fed rate hike to 56% from around 35% on Thursday, according to CME Group's FedWatch tool.
The latest inflation data may have added to pressure on Fed Chair Warsh to set a hawkish tone on Friday. The PCE (personal consumption expenditures) price index topped forecasts with a 0.2% rise that kept the 12-month headline inflation rate at 3.7%. Core inflation held at 3.3%, though the figure was 3.344% when unrounded to the nearest tenth of a percent. Q2 GDP growth was unrevised at an unimpressive 1.5%, but the underlying measure of growth was revised to a sizzling 4.2% from 3.9% initially. That reflects final real sales to private domestic purchasers. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said it expects to revise payroll growth in the year through March down by 79,000 overall and 178,000 for the private sector. That would leave 12-month gains of 195,000 overall and 321,000 for private employers.
AI chip leader Nvidia (NVDA) posted a beat-and-raise fiscal second-quarter report and gave a bullish forecast for next year. Nvidia stock jumped on the news. Adjusted earnings surged 112% year over year. Sales soared 106% to $96.2 billion, the fourth straight quarter of accelerating revenue g

Republicans were already struggling to defuse simmering voter frustrations over the cost of living ahead of the midterms. Then President Donald Trump rekindled his trade wars.
Trump's latest actions — especially his decision to impose 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, inviting retaliatory duties from America's No. 2 trading partner — has sparked new pushback from GOP lawmakers and candidates.
His moves are set to reverberate especially hard in a handful of states crucial to the party's hopes of keeping their Senate majority. That includes northern border states, such as Maine and Michigan, as well as agriculture-heavy battlegrounds like Iowa and North Carolina that have been buffeted for more than a year by Trump's embrace of hardball trade tactics.
"We've got 71 days, and right now we don't have a positive message to tell farm country," said retiring GOP Sen. Thom Tillis, whose North Carolina seat is at risk of flipping into Democrats' hands in November.
Trump's threat to impose tariffs on Canada is creating "tension," Tillis added, and that "the party that owns that tension is the party that will probably suffer the consequences in November."

Deere & Company (NYSE:DE) delivered a stronger-than-expected third quarter, with the company benefiting from a surprising source: the construction boom linked to AI data centers and infrastructure spending. Construction & Forestry sales increased 18% year over year, making it the company's fastest-growing major segment. Deere also reported a 7% increase in quarterly net income to $1.38 billion, while EPS rose to $5.10 from $4.75 a year earlier.
The improvement was enough for Deere to raise its 2026 net income outlook to $4.75 billion-$5 billion, up from the previous lower end of $4.5 billion. The company also continues to believe that 2026 will mark the bottom of the current agricultural equipment cycle.
Still, Deere & Company (NYSE:DE)'s core farm-equipment business remains under pressure. Production & Precision Agriculture sales fell 6% in the quarter as farmers continue to deal with weak commodity prices and difficult farm economics. At the same time, Small Agriculture & Turf sales increased 12%, helped by better milk and beef prices.
The biggest reason to be bullish on Deere & Company (NYSE:DE) is the growing strength of its construction business. The 18% increase in Construction & Forestry sales shows that the company is benefiting from spending that has little to do with the current farm cycle. AI data-center construction, infrastructure projects, and other large-scale development are creating demand for Deere's equipment. The company says customer backlogs now extend well into fiscal 2027, giving it strong visibility into future demand.
This diversification could become particularly valuable if the agricultural market takes longer to recover. Deere does not need its farm-equipment business to rebound immediately for the company to continue generating solid earnings. Construction is currently helping fill that gap, while the 12% increase in Small Agriculture & Turf sales provides another source of support.

The U.S. cattle industry is in rough shape, and there's little sign of immediate relief on the way.
Structural headwinds are bedeviling the beef industry. Cattle herds are at their lowest levels since the 1950s, according to data published last month by the Department of Agriculture. That's driven up beef prices and put significant financial strain on meatpacking firms that are forced to readapt their business in a difficult economic environment.

WASHINGTON, Aug 18 (Reuters) - The Trump administration took a step toward rescinding a decades-old rule that protects undeveloped forests on Tuesday in ‌a move it says will help manage wildfire risk, but which environmental groups ‌oppose, saying it would do the opposite.
President Donald Trump has rolled back environmental regulations and taken land out of conservation for purposes such as energy extraction.
The proposed rule filed by the U.S. Forest Service would rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which bans logging, roads and mining in undeveloped forests, and move authority to local national forest managers, according to a ‌press release from the Department of Agriculture.
The U.S. is suffering one of its worst years for wildfires, with 7.3 million acres (3 million hectares) burned in around 49,000 fires through August 17, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

ARLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — Farmer Tim Burrack had concerns about the Republican nominee for Iowa governor — and he wasn't the only one.
The conservative voter from northeast Iowa said he didn't know Zach Lahn before the political newcomer "came out of nowhere" with a surprise GOP primary win over the candidate endorsed by President Donald Trump. So when Lahn came to his farm last week, Burrack questioned him on his approach to agriculture.
"I hit him pretty hard," said Burrack, who was considering whether to vote for Lahn in November or not vote at all.
It wasn't the first skeptical audience for the self-described "change candidate" in the state led by Republicans.
Lahn won the June primary even though an "entire establishment was set up against me," he said. He criticizes politicians in both parties, accusing them of being bought by corporate interests. His bid for governor will test how an anti-establishment conservative fares with a general electorate — and with traditional Republicans — a decade after Trump's own brand of populism reshaped the GOP.

A clean energy super PAC bankrolled by a left-wing billionaire is pouring millions into an effort to unseat Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., as he wages a bid for re-election in Tennessee's 5th Congressional District.
The Invest in Tomorrow Coalition super PAC had spent roughly $1.3 million on opposing Ogles and supporting his Republican challenger, Charlie Hatcher, Tennessee's former commissioner of agriculture, and recently bought another $700,000 worth of ads.
The group has raised $6.7 million this year, making Ogles a sizable portion of their spending this cycle. A Fox News Digital review of FEC filings discovered that the super PAC is bankrolled by Chris Larsen, the California-based billionaire chairman of Ripple, which is described on its website as the "leading financial technology company that offers crypto solutions for businesses."
Larsen has donated $6 million to the super PAC since Feb. 2026. His latest $5 million donation to Invest in Tomorrow Coalition PAC is his second-largest single donation after donating $5,444,975 to Future Forward PAC in 2024 to support Kamala Harris's failed presidential campaign.

Steel Dynamics, one of the largest producers of low-carbon, recycled steel, continued to benefit from strong demand and surging steel prices during the second quarter. It also navigated losses from its aluminum operations.
The Fort Wayne, Indiana-based company reported record-high steel shipments of 3.7 million tons in the quarter, driven by steady demand from the energy, construction, automotive, industrial and agriculture sectors. Net sales increased 33% to $6.1 billion compared to last year.
Quarterly net income nearly doubled to $534.1 million over last year. This was bolstered by higher steel selling prices, which increased $105 per ton from the first quarter. At the same time, the aluminum segment saw a $33 million loss related to operational startup costs.
Steel Dynamics has seen its earnings surge after the Trump administration enacted a series of steel import tariffs as supplies remain tight, which has had an outsized impact on prices.

In a closely contested presidential election in Colombia, controversial far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella emerged victorious. After an official recount, his opponent, left-wing senator Ivan Cepeda, conceded defeat. This was a hard-fought campaign which split the community, sparking much controversy across Colombia. While debate rages over De la Espriella's policies and ascension to power, it is clear his presidency will be a godsend for Colombia's beaten-down, economically critical oil industry.
After the closest election in Colombia's modern history, president-elect De la Espriella emerged victorious after a recount with a narrow margin of less than one percent. Considerable controversy surrounds his victory despite left-wing contender Ivan Cepeda conceding defeat after the recount by Colombia's electoral authority, the National Electoral Council (CNE). There are fears that De la Espriella will clamp down on law and order in such a radical manner that it will lead to widespread human rights violations and crimes.
Central to the president-elect's platform is his plan to revive Colombia's fiscally strained economy and achieve annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 7%. To pursue that goal, he is supported by Vice President José Manuel Restrepo Abondano, who served as Colombia's Minister of Finance and Public Credit from May 2021 to August 2022 under President Iván Duque. Alongside fiscal austerity aimed at bringing Colombia's ballooning fiscal deficit, expected to reach 7 to 8% of GDP, under control, De la Espriella plans to revive the economically vital oil industry.
A key factor behind Colombia's recent economic malaise is the collapse of the once-dominant hydrocarbon sector. Indeed, over the last decade, oil and natural gas production has declined sharply, sparking fears of an energy crisis, especially with costly liquified natural gas (LNG) imports spiraling ever higher. By April 2026, oil output of 724,910 barrels per day is well below the 915,087 barrels per day lifted for the same month 10 years earlier. Falling production and limited refining capacity are forcing Colombia to import considerably more diesel, mainly for agriculture and transport.
The marked drop in natural gas production poses a dire threat to the economy and the electricity grid. In April 2026, Colombia lifted 694 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, which is close to a multidecade low. It is also significantly less than the 1 billion cubic feet per day produced for the same period a month earlier. The widening supply gap between domestic demand and production forced Bogota, during December 2016, to start importing liquefied natural gas (LNG).

On June 25, two U.S. national forest rangers found the 65-year-old Mark Aaron Gatz, at his illegal campsite at Tonto National Park in central Arizona, according to a probable cause statement. The campsite, located along National Forest System Road 1006, contained a wood-burning fire.
Gatz told the officers he had been living in that location for two years and had been living in the Payson Pine area of the forest for a total of eight years, according to the statement.

Plans to "future-proof" a family farm with a new indoor padel centre have been submitted.
The development at Offerton Grange Farm, near Sunderland, would include six padel courts, a cafe, mezzanine floor, seating area and parking.
Supporting documents submitted to Sunderland City Council said it was becoming "increasingly difficult" to sustain the farm through agricultural activities alone and there was a "clear need to look beyond agriculture for diversification opportunities".
Padel tennis is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, with demand outstripping the number of venues.

CHICAGO, July 2 (Reuters) - With U.S. beef prices soaring and supplies tight, the U.S. Department of Agriculture surprised meat producers and traders on Thursday by reporting ‌a spike in the nation's export sales, fueling questions over the accuracy of the data.
The ‌beef export sales, reported in weekly USDA data, included deals that may have taken place months ago, contributing to the sudden increase, the agency told Reuters. Traders said the totals still looked excessive.
U.S. beef exports have declined since 2022 due to high prices and scarce inventories, and an increase could further raise costs for domestic consumers already facing higher grocery bills during the summer grilling season.
Beef prices broke records this year due to ‌strong demand and a persistent drought that drove U.S. ranchers to slash their cattle herds.

We are so used to seeing ***** ss Sophie swish her cascading long blonde locks that it was quite the shock when the royal debuted a brand new bob! The 61-year-old appeared to have around four inches taken off her mane, with the shorter length finishing above her collarbone.
Sophie stepped out at the Groundswell Regenerative Agriculture Festival at Lannock Farm, where she showcased her fresh look, which suited her pretty features, complemented by a fresh, visibly lighter blonde hue.
The royal, who has been married to Prince Edward for 27 years, has had long hair for over a decade, although she has dabbled in a bob over the years, notably sporting one in 2011, so it's been quite some time since she's opted to go short.
In 2011, Sophie's bob was swishy and voluminous with a fabulous side parting, and she appeared to have blow-dried it to perfection as she attended Zara and Mike Tindall's pre-wedding party in Edinburgh on the Royal Yacht Britannia.
The flattering style featured modern, flicked-out ends, and it complemented the peach-toned shift dress she wore to the momentous event.

TAIPEI, June 25 (Reuters) - China has been contacting U.S. states and private firms to discourage engagement with Taiwan and mischaracterising U.S. policy, but links with Taiwan should ‌be expanded, three U.S. government departments said in joint letters.
The U.S. is Taiwan's most ‌important international backer and arms supplier despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties, to the constant anger of Beijing, which claims the independently ruled island as its territory.
The two letters from U.S. Departments of State, Agriculture and Commerce, one addressed to governor's offices and one to CEOs and business leaders, are dated June 16 but were released by the de facto U.S. embassy in Taiwan late on Wednesday.
Similarly worded, the ‌letters say that China's embassy and consulates regularly contact local government offices or private business in the U.S. to "discourage engagement with Taiwan".
"In doing so, they often mischaracterise U.S. policy by, for example, falsely claiming that Washington has previously accepted Beijing's specific position on Taiwan," both the letters say.

Deere and PACCAR were also strong contributors in the quarter. While end market conditions remain subdued in agriculture equipment and commercial trucking, it appears that the worst of the recent downcycle is likely behind us. Furthermore, Deere and PACCAR stocks also benefited from investors favoring the "HALO trade" during the quarter. As a result, we modestly trimmed our holdings in both companies when valuations, in our view, began to incorporate a recovery in profits."
