PHILADELPHIA − Back on April 26, when the Phillies fell to 9-19 after having lost to the Braves, they would have loved to be in the position they are in now.
So here the Phillies are, having gone 70-42 since. They are just four games behind the National League East leading Braves as they begin a crucial four-game series at Citizens Bank Park on Sept. 4, with a three-game series in Atlanta beginning Sept. 11.

Britain's Harriet Dart ended a 19-month wait for a Grand Slam singles win by battling back to beat Peyton Stearns in the US Open first round.
World number 131 Dart had not won a main-draw singles match at a major since reaching the second round of the 2025 Australian Open.

The 46-year-old very nearly took the first-round match into a deciding set, but 2020 Australian Open champion Kenin saved seven set points to win 6-2 7-6 (8-6).
The match did not begin until 00:13 local time in New York as it followed Mariano Navone's five-set victory over Novak Djokovic on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Manchester City open their Premier League season at home to Bournemouth with one immediate problem, Jeremy Doku is out. The Belgian went off at half-time in the Community Shield and the expectation is that a calf injury will rule him out for several weeks. For Enzo Maresca, that means changes straight away.

After a sweep against the Minnesota Twins where they scored a combined 23 runs over three games, they pull out a solid win as the Marlins try to cling to the wildcard race.
It was all of the makings of a good team win. It started on the first ball in play of the night, Trea Turner made a classic Derek Jeter-like jump throw to nail Esteury Ruiz. Cristopher Sánchez did not have his normal velocity tonight but it didn't matter too much. He still got six strikeouts and made plenty of Marlins hitters look silly on the changeup but there were breaks. The Marlins offense recorded eight hits, including three straight innings with at least one leadoff baserunner.
It was not always pretty but he gutted it out. Sánchez did catch a nice break in the fifth. After back-to-back singles to start the inning, Heriberto Hernández squibbled a a grounder right to Bryson Stott on the third base bag, who fired a rocket to second base for a double play. Xavier Edwards then hit a weak ground ball to Alec Bohm to end the threat.
Meanwhile, the Phillies' offense hit Janson Junk around for five innings but struggled to deliver the final blow. They were able to capitalize in the bottom of the third, with an excuse-me groundball that dribbled down the third base line for a Justin Crawford leadoff double. After a Kyle Schwarber strikeout, Trea Turner slapped a single to put the Phillies on the board.
After a Bryce Harper walk, Luis Arraez then punched a single into right field to double the Phillies lead to two.

On the Eve of the full 2026-27 regular season drop, the league announced its 2026 NBA Cup group play schedule. The Oklahoma City Thunder are part of West Group B this year. Considering the rest of the field, they'll enter as favorites to win it.
The other four West Group B teams are the Minnesota Timberwolves, LA Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans. All five teams will play each other once throughout November. After that, the group winner will advance to the eight-team knockout tournament.
The NBA Cup is entering its fourth year. The league is divided into six groups of five teams. Three apiece in the West and East. Following the group stage, the six group winners punch their ticket to the eight-team tournament. The other two teams will be one wildcard team from each conference.

Jack Draper broke down in tears midway through his return to the court after long-term injury difficulties as he suffered a first-round exit at the Canadian Open.
In his first appearance since June, the 24-year-old Briton took France's Terence Atmane to three sets before recurring discomfort appeared to limit his play and he lost 6-3 2-6 6-2.
Draper received a main-draw wildcard at the tournament in Montreal after a persistent arm injury kept him sidelined and caused his world ranking to plummet from fourth to as low as 160th in a 12-month period.

According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Twins have acquired starting pitcher Dean Kremer from the Baltimore Orioles. The Twins are sending outfield prospect Jhonmardo Reyes in return. Kremer is owed $5.75M this season and is controllable via arbitration for 2027.
Kremer has struggled this season to a 6.50 ERA/6.24 FIP in seven starts this year, but has a long track record as a reliable starter. He's also missed most of the season with a quad strain and just returned July 1, and his advanced numbers paint a prettier picture with a 4.92 xERA/3.81 xFIP. From 2022-2025, Kremer had 3.95 ERA/4.17 FIP in 599 innings, so the Twins are making the bet he'll return to that form down the stretch.
If there's one area that is likely to get back to normal immediately, it's Kremer's home run rate. Kremer has allowed 12 home runs in those 7 seven starts for a robust 3.00 HR/9. He was sitting at a 1.17 HR/9 for his career before this season and will likely regress closer to that figure as he rounds into shape.
Reyes, 18, will be heading back to the Orioles. He's still a long ways away, but he's had some very exciting flashes in his first full season in the Twins' system. FanGraphs has him rated as the Twins 10th-best prospect, touting his top end power potential with a lot of questions about his ability to make contact against better pitchers. Twinkie Town's Aidan O'Brien is a bit lower on Reyes, placing him at number 22.
Starting pitching is always significantly more expensive than relievers, but this is a pricey trade for a pitcher that has looked rough this season. His track record will likely pay off in the long run, but Reyes is a significant tier above most 18-year-old wildcard prospects. The Orioles were likely only willing to move Kremer this early specifically because the Twins were willing to offer Reyes. You guys have probably heard the line 'its hard not to be romantic about baseball' before, and tonight was a perfect encapsulation of that very phrase. It had all the highs of the big blowout win, the heartbreak of the blown save, and then the triumph of the unsung hero coming out of nowhere in the extra innings to save the team. Nights like tonight either drive you crazy, or make you fall in love with the game that much more. No other sport can play with our emotions quite like baseball can.
The Diamondbacks offense got off to such an amazing start. Scoring consistently with team baseball throughout each of the first 4 innings. It really felt like this offense was clicking. Overall they recorded 16 hits in the 12 innings highlighted by James McCann with 4 and Nolan Arenado with 3. On the flip side, this offense also set a franchise record recording 24 outs with runners in scoring position tonight. What started out so good, quickly turned into a start reminder of the problems that have been plaguing this offense most of the season with its struggles with RISP.
Then in the 7th inning, the offense suddenly came to a screeching halt. And the Pirates offense came jolting to life. The Pirates would erase the 6-0 lead the Dbacks had going into the 8th inning with 3 runs in the 8th and 3 runs in the 9th. Unfortunately what had been a strength much of the season in the backend of the bullpen in Thompson and Sewald was a weakness tonight. Thompson simply could not get away with anything tonight giving up 4 hits and a walk in just .2 of an inning. And the leader of this bullpen, Sewald came into the game with a 3 run lead in the 9th and proceeded to give up a base hit and back to back home runs to immediately erase the 3 run lead and tie the game. This was such a low moment for this team in such a big game. Especially with how lock down Sewald has been in save situations this season coming into the game having blown only 2 saves in 24 chances.
However fortunately for the Dbacks there was Gerardo Carillo who tonight put this team on his back and carried them back into the 3rd wildcard spot. Carrillo, who came into today working primarily as the low leverage long man, was thrust straight into some of the most high leverage innings of the season thus far, and boy did he deliver. Carillo was able to give the team 2 innings tonight in which he allowed 0 hits and 0 runs while striking out 3 while getting his first career major league win. He threw a 6 pitch scoreless 11th and then put up another 0 in the 12th to keep this team alive. Carillo has always been an intriguing relief option in the upper minors given his upper 90's fastball velocity combined with his pitch mix including a cutter, a splitter, and sinker. However tonight he also showed that he has what could arguably be the most important trait for a late inning reliever and that is he has that dog in him.
It is also worth discussing Brandon Pfaadt who tonight was dominant over 7 innings and definite

The sport's biggest stars are already ramping up their preparations for the season's final Grand Slam, the US Open. Arthur Fery's dream run at Wimbledon came to an end in the semifinals, but the British wildcard scored a huge payday during the fortnight.
Fery, 23, entered Wimbledon with career earnings of $868,053 and will take home an additional $1.2 million after falling in the semis to No. 2 Alexander Zverev, 7-6(0), 6-2, 6-4.
Had Fery scored the massive upset, he would have earned $2.415 million.
The payday doesn't include the sponsorships he will likely pick up from becoming the first British wildcard in 25 years to reach the semifinals.
