NEW YORK (AP) — Stan Wawrinka's Grand Slam career ended Monday when the 2016 U.S. Open champion lost 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), 6-0 to Matteo Berrettini.
Wawrinka won the last of his three major ***** les in Flushing Meadows when he beat Novak Djokovic in the final 10 years ago. At 41, he was given a wild card into the event in what he has said will be his final season before retiring.
"I'm going to miss it for sure. I'm going to miss it big time. I love the game," Wawrinka said before he was honored on the court by U.S. Tennis ***** ociation officials.
The match appeared remarkably similar to the meeting between the same players at Wimbledon, when Berrettini won a four-setter, with each going to a tiebreaker.
But after Wawrinka had his serve broken to start the third set — despite winning a key point when video review was used — Berrettini quickly pulled away.

Roger Federer was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame today, along with tennis commentator Mary Carillo. Federer gave an emotional and tearful speech during his induction ceremony in Newport, Rhode Island.
He enters the Hall of Fame while several players from his era are in the main draw of the 2026 U.S. Open.
Since retiring in 2022, Federer has watched Venus Williams, 46, return from inactive to active and Serena Williams, 44, evolve back into tennis. His compatriot Stan Wawrinka, 41, and friend Gael Monfils, who turns 40 on September 1, are retiring this year, but are also playing in the U.S. Open.

A lot of you here might think this is a tennis hoddle. It isn't. It's one about an athlete who has meant so much to me during the second half of my childhood and a great deal of my adulthood.
Stanislas Wawrinka has been a fixture of my life for 18 years.
I didn't know who Wawrinka was the first time I saw him play. I watched him in-person at the 2008 Pacific Life Open (Now BNP Paribas) in Indian Wells, California. It's the biggest tournament outside the four majors. My father and I drove there in my freshman year of high school.
The first men's tennis match I ever saw was between Stanislas Wawrink against this young challenger to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. His name was Novak Djokovic, and he just won the 2008 Australian Open.

Two former Cincinnati high school standout tennis players have been awarded wild cards to the Cincinnati Open.
JJ Wolf (Cincinnati Country Day) and Vignesh Gogineni (Mason) were granted qualifying wild card spots, the tournament announced on Friday, July 31.
The main draw wild cards were awarded to former Cincinnati Open champion Grigor Dimitrov, three-time Major champion Stan Wawrinka, Jack Draper and Gael Monfils.
Wolf, who has been ranked as high as No. 39 throughout his career (2023), is on the comeback trail after shoulder injuries sidelined him for over a year. He has recently played in ATP Challengers in Bloomfield Hills, Lincoln and Cary.
Wolf is still searching for his first main draw victory in his hometown tournament. He lost in the Round of 64 in 2020, 2022 and 2023. In his last Cincinnati Open appearance, he fell in the opening round of qualifying.

Wimbledon is just around the corner, and the men’s singles field is nearly finalised now that all the wildcards have been announced.
While there’s still one spot left in the women’s draw, all eight wildcards for the men have been handed out ahead of this year’s Grand Slam.
As expected, British players make up most of those selections, with Grigor Dimitrov and Stan Wawrinka standing out as the only non-Brits given a place.
Their presence should add quality to the tournament, though Carlos Alcaraz missing out is already a significant loss for fans hoping to see him play again.
